Hello, I have noticed that ever since I have gotten my EVO that the 3G speeds are insanely slow. I've ran speedtests all over the Los Angeles area and they average download speed never exceeds 1 Mbps. Anyways, I have been without proper internet since I have moved, so I have been USB tethering to my PC. This has compelled me to look into the slow 3G matter more. I ran a speedtest from my PC browser and noticed that the central server(gold star) it recommends is in KS and im in CA. This is suggesting that the best speedtest is in KS, meaning that I am probably getting 3G connection out of state
Is this even possible? And how can I adjust my 3G connection?
Well there are never radios which could potentially help, but a lot of that data speed just varies.

Thanks for the suggestiom, i've already updated the PRI, WiMax and Radio to the latest(I never read about NV or HBoot updares, so i'll stay away from those for the time being). I just updated to the deodexed version of the latest rooted HTC sense 3.70 update. Results have been constant from stock up until this point though.
Yea my 3g at times are like but I notice it when I flash different radios & prl from new to old they say u should always stay updated but notice the best results when I use the old radio n old prl but now I use the old radio and the new prl 1.90 get results n u should playing with the home agents

I would have agree with the OP. I live in the Atlanta GA area and typically where I would I get 5+ bars of signal, but I get speeds averaging .600 mbps, its ridiculous. With my old Hero I would always get +1.5 mbps in the same area. Now there have been times where I would get 1.5 to 2.1 mbps on my Evo on 3G... but a lot of the times it would only last for a day or 2. Then I come back to work the next morning and these speeds are back to being craptastic even while still displaying 5+ bars.
At home its always been worse. But I would still be able to run Pandora and run a 4 minute or less youtube video on regular quality without too much stutter. Now I wouldn't dare use data like that on my Evo w/o flipping on WiFi now though. Its pretty ridiculous at this point...
Well, ive had the Epic for about 2 months now. Got into the rooting scene and have been flashing all kinds of roms and hacks, but something has never changed for me. My 3G Speeds are about as fast as dial up... i cannot watch youtube without waiting half an hour for a 5 minute buffer, and barely can wifi tether because the connection is too damn slow. im getting about 194 kbps down and 98 kbps up, which is trash compared to what i used to get with ATT (1.2 mbps/800kbps). I am running on DK28, and have Epic Experience 2.0.0.5 installed EVEN WITH the viperROM data governor killer. Can someone please help me with this incredibly annoying issue?
It's the phone. The Evo and the Moment both get better speeds on 3G than this phone.
It's disappointing.
I am sorry, but i need a second opinion of this... I payed $530 for a phone that doesnt get 3g speeds?
Sorry to here that, however im on stock 2.1 eclair rooted, custom kernal and my 3g is fast and i get faster speed then your earlier att speeds, Even when i have poor 3g service it still blazing fast, right now im using it to wifi tether using mobile ap to stream music on my ipod touch and was downloading 6mb gba roms and got 4 of those downloaded in like 3 min total.
What rom are u running i have no issues with 1x/3g/4g
Man,i had constant 500-700kbps on Tmobile before lame ass sprint rep promised me 4G in one month of my Epic purcHase(October 11,2010),now im stuck with 70-200kbps(about 120kbps most of the time) and now that I bought the phone sprint reps dont know when 4G is coming to Biffalo,NY.My ATT 2G 3 years ago was faster the Sprint's 3G.
It used to take me 20min to download a movie on,tmobile now its like 2-4 hours.Man,i feel like walkin to Sprint and splittin that dude's head open for telling me all this.
I havet tried data governor killer yet,it improves speed? If so how much improvement would I see?

Man my hero had a hell of a lot more speed than the epic on 3g. My hero was 1.8mb d/l 1mb u/l
Epic is 150-250kb and 100kb for dl and ul
Not to mention, the ping is horrible. The epics ping is 150-200ms compared to my heros 50ish ping
On 4g the ping is still horible with 150-200ms, but I get 6mb dl and 1mb ul on average, sometimes I get 1MB/s download but the upload seems to be capped at 1mb/s
I think sprint gimped this phones speeds to ensure the evo was good and banwidth free

Well what ive noticed is that AT&T 3g Speeds Crawl Everywhere i go compared to sprint, sprint has always been the most reliable and fastest for me. Ive been on my HTC touch.Touch pro 2 and My latest epic and always been fast data just slow phones. my epic has been blazzing fast on data compared to my friends iphone, my old phones and gross t-mobile
I think it is the network. I get lousy 3g speeds in some places and excellent 3g speeds in others.

Yeah,Sprint's ping and latency makes 200kbps seem like 50kbps.But still this is 2011 and not 2007,200kbps on 3G is a joke.
Plus I read that when Epic/Evo have their 4G turned on they lag so much that you have to reboot them 3-4 times a day.
It is the network, when I am at my GF house I get very poor 3g speed like 200k-maybe 400k every single time I am there no matter day it is. But when I go back to my house on the week/weekends which is about 150 to 200 miles away my 3g speeds are great 700k-1000k. So now I just expect poor 3g speed when I am at my GF house.
I'm envious of you "slow" speeds.
Using Speed Test, I'm lucky if I get 50kps regardless of signal. I've been thinking of bringing my phone in to be looked at, because I think that speed is BS for 3G.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
The problem is not inherent with the Epic. I get 1243kbps down and 514kbps up on mine. My only points of comparison are my Nexus One on T-Mobile (no longer working, number ported to my Epic) which got somewhere around 2500kbps down and 1000kbps up but that's on HSPDA so that's not really a fair comparison. My Verizon Blackberry 9650 gets similar speeds compared to my Epic in speed tests but obviously day to day internet activity is loads faster on the Epic due to the better OS and faster processor.
My first Epic was defective and, among other problems, it did exhibit low speed (in addition to device hangs, a broken accelerometer, etc) so definitely take it in to a Sprint store and ask about getting a replacement.
So... Is there any solution to this? Seriously, how in the world does someone "video Chat" with the front facing camera over **** speed? Sprint needs to get their stuff together.... I, however, had my wife's hero and i did a speed test and she gets 800kbps down and 500 up.... in the same exact place where i tested my epic, and it even had the same amount of bars... 3

NOOB question: what's dBm and is the best number after the minus sign higher or lower? Right now I'm -85, but at times I've been at -105 or -45. Which of these numbers is best?

-45 is great. Almost as though you are right under a tower. -105 is right before you might expect your signal to go away to nothing.
FWIW, I think it is the network. I get 100-200kbps in places and upwards of 1200kbps (download) in others.

Is it true that Epic start lagin when on 4G is turned on?Another question what kinda speed are you gettin on 4G?
Thanx in advance.
So I have a T-Mobile G2 and the 4g plan. I was wondering what type of data speeds everyone is getting. I've been averaging around 2-3 mbps (highest was 6mbps down).
I'm concerned because this is not 4g speeds (they should be 14 mpbs+ easily). My friend has a Verizon 4G LTE phone and he consistently averages 20+ mbps in the same area.
Also, I am using MIUI rom which may not support 4g so this could cause problems if my results are indeed low and others are getting higher data speeds.
all depends on the area your in. in riverside county, ca i average about 13 mbps
I'm living near UCLA/Westwood in Los Angeles and so far I am averaging around 2-3 mbps which seems to be low.
In phone status, it says I am connected to HSDPA network. I'm going to try walking around campus and see if I am ever connected to HSPA+ network and test my speed there.
I'm concerned that either I am not getting 4g speeds (which I am paying for) or my MIUI rom / CM7 kernel is somehow interfering (even though it shouldn't since my speeds should depend on the radio I have which is the newest one).
Also, is the G2 incapable of exceeding 14.4 mbps downlink? I ask because that is what I believe it was originally advertised for.
Any qualcomm smartphone doesn't have the ability to download faster than 14.4 Mbps. And LTE is just a better (in speed anyway, not battery life) technology.
Sent from my G2 running Cyanogenmod 7.
Correct, the G2 only has a 14.4 max based on the chip. Additionally, that is best case scenario. Depending on where I am at in the city, and the time of day (population shift during work hours), I will get 2-3 down, and in some areas as high as 8-9.
If I recall, anything nowadays still isn't true 4G as the standard for 4G is supposed to be 100+ Mbit. I don't see the need (for me anyways) to be pulling 10-15 down at any given time. I don't do major downloads via my phone (don't want to hit data cap) and it uses additional battery. I know some people require the higher speeds, but I really think a large majority of regular users just think "that has a higher number, it must be better". And before people may get mad with that comment, I don't necessarily lump XDA members as regular users.
Yes, I do realize we are no where near what 4G speeds should be, hence the reason why the technology is called LTE.
Ok, so I wanted to confirm that we are hard capped at 14.4 mbps because of the chip. Thanks guys!
Yeah I get anywhere from 3-5Mbps with good signal. After that when the cap hits data is practically useless. Can't even use the market or any kind of video streaming. Gay should be atleast 2G but its nowhere close to that speed. The cap is crippling me.

I would actually suggest downloading the 3G script from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=15948434#post15948434
it seems like hokus pokus, but I swear, my 3G DL speeds were averaging maybe 2 mbps before, now it's up to 6! Not sure which will work best for you so you're going to have to try them all and use maybe the speedtext.net app
I don't even know what to say here. I have a Epic 4G Touch and the speeds suck.
I can barely use the 3G data services. Things simply do not load when I'm on 3G.
An average speed test for me is roughly 900~1000 Ping, 7~13kbps down and maybe 40~70kbps upload.
4G is fine but we only have 4G in ONE small area of the city. When I'm on 4G, I see like 10~12Mbit easy.
I use my phone for work. I need to be able to tether or load pages on the phone when I'm on the go and this just doesn't work for me.
Normally when I'm running these tests, I have 4 or 5 bars. I also work about 45 minutes from home and I experience these speeds in BOTH areas and everywhere in between.
Would calling Sprint and complaining be worth while? Any fixes?

It is sad right?.....I been dealing with 50k-maybe break 100k for a long time in my area. That is just the way it is in "your area" at this time for 3G. Maybe when they start upgrading their tower things will get better. The reason I say it is their network "Area", is that I can go to San Antonio and 3g works great nice speed..etc., but every time I go back to my GF house in South Texas 4-5hrs away I can't break 100k download on 3g again that has been going on for 1yr or more.
There is a link floating around that will give you info on towers being upgraded.
I agree, in Chicago 3G speeds suck worse than my first internet computer in mid 1990's.
I have had the EVO 4G and now the Galaxy SII. Both get 50-75k/sec download. Searching web sites is insanely slow. YouTube is a joke buffering non stop.
4G. LOL. What a gimmick. Very spotty hard to hold a connection which always drops. And big baggy drainer. I never use 4G.
Sprint Galaxy S2 w/ Calk's 1.5a + ICS 1.6
Welcome to the club. I came from T-Mobile where I was enjoying download speeds that are 10x faster then I get now with Sprint's 3G.
4G in my area is not bad ~1MB/sec but I don't get it consistently..
3G upgrades are badly needed, the Sprint tower upgrade site says the towers in my area were already upgraded within the past 6 months, I'd hate to know what it was like before those upgrades..

LOL, I visited Chicago for 4 days over Veteran's Day and thought to myself "Wow, these speeds are awesome!" I was getting >1 MBit on 3G and 5-8 MBit on 4G in the center of town.
I live in Vegas and thought Chicago was at least twice as fast as here...
I hear you!
I live in the SLC area of Utah and came from T-mobile. With T-mobile I could get 1-3MB with a low 3G signal on my Vibrant, now on Sprint I get much lower than that with full 3G bars and WiMax is a joke in UT still..
Memphis Tn and I am getting speeds like the OP is getting. I have tried three modems and they are all the same. I am hoping it is due to something with Sprint going on right now. Before this weekend I was getting some where near 900 down and 400 up going over 1000 at times. This is really BAD.
Yeah it does suck. We have such a nice phone but its pretty much all data driven. I don't even like to usr y phone unless I can connect to wifi cause 3g is so slow. Sprint needs to do something fast. I can't take it.

It might be the towers.

Guess what me too lol. The tower I use from my house is less than 50 kbits anytime of the day no matter how close I am. And thats 3g not 1x.. Even better they say theres no tower upgrades planned and the tower functions just fine
Yet, everyone else with sprint here has the same results.

Just ran a speed test.net from around Allentown, PA. 5 bars, ping 86ms, 958kbps down, 701kbps up. Fairly typical for this area, however no 4G here. Generally I've had pretty good luck with 3G.

I Get 2-3mbps on the down and 1-2mbps on the up here in Salem, NH and its a heavily populated area....Might just be your towers
I remember back when I was using an HTC Mogul and they first turned on EvDO Rev. A. I was getting maybe 600-800k/sec down and honestly that was fine. I would *still* be fine if I could get 600-800k down on 3g. The problem is that my speeds are now somewhere around 10-20k/sec down if speedtest.net is to be trusted. I broke my launch day Evo and upgraded to the e4gt about a week and a half ago. I hoped that would fix things but so far it's just as bad. I think the highest I've gotten on any speed test this past week is still under 50k/sec with more typical speeds around the 15-20k mark.
I just did a backup so I can restore this phone back to stock and stop by the Sprint store tonight. I'm curious as to their explanation. I'd also like to see if their demo units and personal units have this issue. Honestly if they can show me that it's a defective phone I will be thrilled because I am still in my 14 days and can have it swapped out. If it turns out to be a software bug endemic to the phone then I'm in a less pleasant spot. I could wait to see if the rumors of the new ICS build pan out and fix anything but by then I am past my 14-day window.
If I'm stuck waiting around for a newer phone down the line I might just have to suck it up and swap for an iPhone since I can sell it for more in 6-8 months. I just don't really want an iPhone. I use my girlfriend's and it's pretty well built but the screen is so tiny and I hate losing built in Google Talk, Nav, etc.
Freaking annoying.
I live in Aurora, CO and work in Broomfield, CO (approx 50 miles away). Between the two, I'm lucky if I'm able to get 350kbps down. Worst of all is the inconsistency. Connections drop constantly, making it impossible to stream music.
I remember when I first came to Sprint, I could stream music almost non-stop on my 700wx from the time I left my house till I got back home. Those days are loooooong gone.
I don't understand how Sprint stays in business with such a low speed 3G network. I also get VERY slow data in my area and was very close to leaving Sprint, but they offered me an airave, so I can now use my phone in my house. 90% of the time, the data speed is terrible anywhere I travel. I like to stream some music (foreign radios) on my way to and from work and it is terrible: constant buffering. I was tempted to switch to T-Mobile since they have great coverage in my area, still thinking about it...
Very frustrating!
Welcome to Sprint, the Now Our 3G is SCREWED Network.
According to Network Signal Widget, i'm connected to HSDPA 7.2Mbps and through Settings > About Phone > HSDPA: 9
Speedtest results are 4000-5000kbps down and 2000kbps up consistently.
the fastest ive seen in the nyc area was just under 11mbps.
Someone had an issue before that it was saying he was on HSDPA and it was because his baseband and RIL did not match. Might be worth looking into.
the baseband and RIL are already updated to the UGLC1. I never did a speed test before the update though, but the widget showed 7.2mbps still.
i'm perfectly happy with the speeds i'm getting now, a lot better than Sprint's haha. just curious if there's still potential untapped on my end.

Just could be your particular area or congestion.
...
Your speed is comparable to results I got with ATT 3G. Some T-Mobile mobile phones support HSPA+ 42Mbps theoretically, the Nexus is HSPA+ 21Mbps, so it depends on the phone spec too. The fastest in speedtest I got with a T-Mobile SII was 24Mbps.

I've been on Tblowbile, Spurnt, and Veryzoned in the last year or so....I can compare more accurately than most.
Since I'm near the beach in southern California I have the luxury of pegging the signal strengths on every phone I've used.
Tmo here is hspa42....fastest I ever got was about 12Mbps down and the system seems locked at 1.5Mbps up (it never deviates higher or lower).
Spurned here is WiMax (and switching to LTE soon) ....Usually get about 12Mbps down and 3-4Mbps up.
Verizon here is LTE.....I've clocked 35Mbps + down and 14-15Mbps up.
In case you think I was lagging on phones I currently have a Gnex, before that a Motorola Photon, before that a Evo3D, before that a Evo4G, before that a GalaxyS Vibrant....and so on and so on.

Best I've done myself on Gnex:
I get HSDPA: 9 on average but when I start downloading, after a few seconds it kicks to HSPAP:15. I thought it was a battery saving feature?
