Windows Phone 7 Wins 3 Awards for design excellence - Windows Phone 7 General

The Industrial Designers Society of America recently announced their annual International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA). Microsoft had won a total of seven awards. Our Windows Phone 7 alone have won awards in three categories..The IDEA program is considered by many as the ‘Oscars’ of design competitions.. Before Windows Phone7- 3 awards the iphone was the only phone to win one award in 2008... http://blogs.technet.com/b/next/archive/2011/06/30/microsoft-scoops-7-idea-awards-for-design-excellence.aspx

cooler than iphone ? never gonna happen. ever. the "I'm a mac" commercials cemented the status of who was and was not cool, for the two people that weren't sure yet.
android is not cool, android is FUN, fast and evolving.
windows is still pushing OFFICE like it matters, like its fun... no one cares.

But Office does matter. That's why Office 2010 is the fastest selling Office in Microsoft's history. The "I'm a Mac" ads were pretty cool, but backfired after a while, because the Mac came off as a smug ass hat, where the PC was more like the clumsy nice guy. Microsoft countered that brilliantly with the "I'm a PC" ads and they had success, Apple stopped with their campaign. I think that's the only time where Microsoft had actually a good advertisement campaign.

To be fair, I agree with his point about Apple. Deserving or not, they are pretty well entrenched in America (see: average consumer) as "the brand to own."

And now no tethering?

So, then, why would anyone buy this?
I can't tether. I can't automatically record all phone calls. I can't file explore.

I like the ads. They're pretty good as an introduction to the platform.
Remember, most people have no clue that WP7 exists and is coming out soon. For us, this stuff is old news but you have to spoon feed consumers. If you jump straight to specific features and hardware, people will miss the point that this is a whole new platform. Once these sorts of basic ads are out and consumers are aware of the new Windows Phone's existence, you build on that and show off features and hardware.
I can already see an ad where the person is flipping through the interface, typing on the screen, and then in the last few seconds, flips out a physical keyboard and types something snarky.
Then some other ones showing off XBL gaming, Zune, etc. So much opportunity here for some pretty awesome ads. The more detailed ads will come in due time. They're just getting their feet wet. Google and Apple have a lot to be afraid of.
You make a good point, and I know this is the early stages as more will come. BUT, I have to be a jack ass and point out this great commercial.

I'd also like to point out how they're branding it. Notice... they're not saying "Windows Phone 7". I have been critical of the naming but I figured a while back that this is how they would brand it and I'm glad to see that they are. Noone cares about the number really. Many people will think it's 1.0. So instead of telling your buddy that you've got a "Windows Phone 7 phone" or something awkward like that the convention will just be to say "I've got a Windows Phone". If they actually know that WM6 existed (many people don't) they may ask "the old one or the new one" and you'd respond "windows phone 7". It's the same as someone saying "I've got an iPhone". They wouldn't say "I've got an iPhone4 phone". Or "I've got an Android 2.2 phone". It's just "Android" or more likely "I have a Droid". Man does Google have their branding all mixed up. I'm surprised this hasn't caused more of a problem than it seems to be. People just call every Android device a "Droid". Just imagine if Verizon didn't launch that ad campaign. Advertising matters, a lot.
Right again, WP7 the name has nothing to do with WM. Windows Phone is brand new, I forgot what the 7 actually means.
Most people I've seen with Androids don't know or just don't care what version they have.

Video chatting has been around for years. I felt like a douche doing it then. People looked like douches doing it then. And nothing has changed.
I'd love to stick with Microsoft products for mobile devices, but I have requirements since finding out what I can truly do with my Touch Pro 2. Imagine recording every single phone call in and out of this phone. Android doesn't even do that. It's been such a treat to have all that data.
So hopefully by the time I'm ready for a new device, WP7 will be ready to meet the standards.

tbh I don't think that Apple made it look more amazing than years ago, when Video calling was new.
I also haven't seen someone acctually using it more than, let's say once a year. It's really uncommon and not a point worth advertising. Even if WP7 doesn't support it (idk if it does), noones gonna miss it and point it out, except maybe Apple fanboys that think that "FaceTime" is totally awesome just because it's Apples idea

A lot of good Droid commercials don't show any real phone features either. Unless changing your arm into a robot arm is a feature of a droid, or having circular lines shoot out of your phone .
They just show cool futuristic themes and graphics.
But the commercials do show a "feature" of the phone. They're trying to build an angle for their marketing. The angle/feature being that they want to advertise that you can consume content faster on wp7 and you're not a slave to your phone...whether it's true is irrelevant, but that's the advertising campaign they're pursuing.
Robot arms were for the new keyboard. Lines shooting out of the phone was showing the wifi hotspot capability.

no it wasn't, there is no kb on the droid x...it was a vessel for that phone to come out of (I'm talking about the droid commercial they show in theatres). The commercial had nothing to do with droid other than it appearing at the end. It's just something futuristic and mysterious.
There are lots of droid commercials that don't sell a feature. They just sell the image of droid being advanced, being "scifi".
^oh, I haven't seen one at a theater. My bad.
The one that didn't make sense to me was the Stealth Fighters one. Airplanes dropping boxes on the ground, with Droids in them didn't make sense to me

I'm just saying, the point of a commercial is to introduce something memorable and to tie that recognition to a product. It's not an infomercial where you always sell features. It's a 30s effort to make something stick in someone's mind.
Take coca cola commercials...they don't always tell you how good it tastes. They have a lavish commercial and give you the impression that coke brightens your bad day.
Look at Geico...they have 25s of random nonsense with a gecko...then just say the line, "saved money on car insurance".
MS is going for a similar approach...they don't try to prove that wp7 "makes your day easier" they just say it does and try to imply that it is less of a hassle.

This is a very sad state of affairs tech industry is in. There are so many great technologies out there that disappear without a trace simply because companies can't present them properly to general public. You have to wait for Apple to take the idea, distort it by putting in a walled garden "ecosystem" and make a simple interface that an average Joe can get without getting scared by options, settings and multiple ways of achieving the results.
I can only pray that Apple TV doesn't take off to kill development of DLNA.

I love WP7 but isn't iOS 5 The Ultimate OS?

Looks like Apple is taking what people love about every other OS and mashing up into one. That's just brilliant!
Sure they're copying plenty of stuff but the end users won't care as long as their phones do everything they want. Any thoughts?
I dislike the title of this thread. Espeically in a WP7 forum. If they are "copying" then it just shows how good the people are they are copying it from. iOS needed to keep up with the latest standards and its good to have competition.

Wow, are we not adults here? Can't we talk about what's good about an other OS? Really, wow...
that's just it save from notifications and text only browser, a lot of things are offered in wp7 mango natively...so what's the point? I mean the main problem I have is that apple is still app centric. Yes its finally doing a lot with regards to integration, but is it enough? I'm not sure
I don't mind having a discussion on this I bought my sister an ipad so the ios info is good for me to know...
In many ways it seems that apple has finally caught up to microsoft and google in terms of OS integration and consumer demand...only took 4 years
imho the notes system looks cluttered and gimmicky

I gotcha P
I have owned every major phone OS (Smartphone) in US, and WP7 just works for me I have had android and IOS both are great at what they do give me apps that do what I need at that time. Now to touch base with a couple of things we are all wrong in the respect of what is better for this guy is better for that. Everything is based on perception on how it feels to the consumer, and most comparisons on phone stuff is based on what someone shows us at a given time. I pleaded my case with Windows Mobile time and time again when I was with ATT and then the new Phone OS came out with features I already had, the biggest is (tethering) but people tend to go with whats cool and who is using what. Apples biggest advantage by far is accessories I buy one and it works on all my iphones, ipods, etc that is the only advantage I see apple having right now. (I hope this is still on topic I jabber alot)
Alright, can a mod just close the thread please, I can see where this is going...

I see what your saying about the iOS so know that one person fully agrees with you.
I don't see a problem with them copying anything? Really, what they are copying is exactly what they needed to make a well rounded OS. It would be very foolish of them to just look at what they need and push it aside. I say, iOS 5 is gonna be insane.
I would also like to add that I kinda predicted their new notification system in another thread on here. And yes, I do want a cookie
There's a lot of stuff WP7 Mango does that ios doesnt do- Threads that integrate your SMS, IM's, Facebook chat, People hub where you can see your history with a person including calls, texts, pictures, bing extras, local scout, native Office, Xbox live (8 new games here http://www.winrumors.com/8-new-xbox-live-enabled-windows-phone-7-games-revealed-at-e3/), IE9 with hardware acceleration - looking at ios5 I cant think of anything that it now has that really trumps Mango.
apple added features from other OS's but even then WP7's integration is second to none and still comes out on top for me.
I don't see much difference in terms of features between iOS5 and Mango (there are areas where each one is better than the other), but that's certainly bad for Mango. It's not enough to have feature parity with the leader to beat it, especially when media calls iOS5 "massive" and Mango "underwhelming".
I understand the sentiment and agree but dont think the title gave the thread much chance..
If its the ultimate there is no reason for anyone to buy any other device.
One thing is good though - it'll be much easier for Microsoft to explain what Windows Live is. Their Marketing and PR people should commit harakiri, I think. One cannot live with such shame.
Off topic: Windows Mobile had copy and paste and Multi-tasking since forever. So I don't know what all the praise for iPhone is/was all about. I also believe what Microsoft really needs to work on is their Marketing department. I think that's just where Apple beats them.
Sent from my HD7 T9292 using XDA Windows Phone 7 App
iOS5 looks like a cracking upgrade for people who already own iOS devices, or are heavily invested in the Apple ecosystem. It's fan service, rather than something that will bring in new customers by the droves.
I've got to say though, it does tempt me back towards an iPhone. If they had a Zune Pass style music subscription service I might have made the jump with the iPhone 5, though there's a few other features I'd like to see. WebOS-style linking between phone and tablet for a start.
Mango looks like a stronger update, but starting from a weaker position. Microsoft also seem to lack a real platform currently. They've got lots of small projects going on, but it's a bit disjointed. My Windows Phone, Windows PC and Xbox 360 don't really play nice together and I'm yet to see a Windows Tablet that I want to buy. Windows 8 needs to hurry up...

Apple WWDC - Nothing to worry about

Now I know how these tend to be contentious topics but hopefully we can avoid this.
I looked (and am still looking) over the iOS 5 features and it seemed a little lackluster to me. The iCloud is nice and the Notifications is Android but welcomed none the less. Microsoft does have Skydrive but I am trying to head to head the two cloud services to see the differences.
What do you think? Was there enough innovation in iOS 5 that gave it market separation? What does Windows Phone need (besides notifications)?
Both are due in fall. I was worried iOS would do some kind of widgets with a fresh new UI but they did not which is a win for android and wp7.
Your take?
truthfully nothing to worry about...
next thing you know apple is gonna sue google for the notifications hahah
also is the icloud some type of paid dropbox?
I really haven't seen much that it's adding. Still, it will sell millions.

Engadget have been Apple fanboys for a while now. The Microsoft keynote that was liveblogged by them was shamefully fully of sarcasm. Biased to no ends.
iCloud is free so I am not sure how it is a paid dropbox. Unless you mean the offering of paid services from the free one.
It sounds like Skydrive to me but also integrating Apple services.
I was most afraid they would really improve the look and feel of iOS but that did not happen. It reminds me of some arguments that took place on this forum about progress. It is easier to add missing features than to innovate.

While iCloud is basically SkyDrive + Mesh, it's important that it seems better implemented based on what I hear. It allows to back up your settings, ringtones etc., and it gives APIs to third party apps. These two things make it immensely more useful, IMO.
Oh, and one more thing - before iCloud, Apple actually had nothing to lock users in after they started selling DRM-free music. Now they do.
I would be a hater to say that the features presented are not useful, and/or desireable. But on a whole it lacked the wow factor.
Should this have been iOS 5? Or 4.7?
Judging by media reaction, it has enough wow factor to last three OSes for like a year or so...

But Microsoft did not market it like they were the first. I was actually surprised about the humility Apple showed in the conference. I did not see any blatant jabs at anyone else (save for some PC and Windows ones in the Lion like when he said lost in windows).
I came out feeling that Android and Windows Phone could gain further marketshare by Apple not doing something really different to the UI. I was hearing the widgets rumours and the orbital UI and thought they would come out with something that would put them lightyears ahead. Instead, the race is a photofinish.
Nothing to worry about? Sounds like 2007 in here. Be honest.
I'm really disappointed in iOS5 because I expected Apple to innovate and come with new features that would push the entire mobile space forward. Instead we got stuff that has already been done on the other platforms.
That said, they did manage to make the platform much more solid, taking care of many of the complaints people have against it.

Sure, but iOS has existed for much longer than WP7. It took Apple and Android over a year to add Copy/Paste, whereas it took WP7 only a few months. iOS didn't even have MMS for the longest time, whereas it came stock in WP7. A camera button still doesn't even exist on the iPhone, users have to now use the volume key. What happens when they're listening to music and want to take a picture? Which takes precedent? Great multi-tasking for ya...Oh yeah, and they still have to fumble to their camera app to even be able to take one. The WP7 Marketplace reached 10,000 and 20,000 apps in a shorter time period than the competition.
When looking over the lifetime of all three platforms, with startup at the same point in time, WP7 is expanding much quicker than iOS and Android ever did.
I know you can say "Oh, well since these things (Copy/Paste) already existed in other platforms, WP7 should have had them from the beginning."
That's not how development works. An infant OS is born, and it is updated as it is developed.

They have a point
Joe Belifore hit it on the head when he mentioned a lot of the things on ios 5 is on mango or in nodo...and its not that groundbreaking...
IMHO I'm not impressed and I use apple ipad so its not blind windows fanboyism
I really wanted to be impressed and frankly I was not
I hope Microsoft also impliments a notification tray of some sort in the future. WebOS and Android got it right and Apple copied it right. I haven't seen any improvements to notification system in Mango, yet. I hope they address it in Apollo.
Other than that, I am really not surprised that Apple didn't add much to the OS. I mean, once you have a good multitasking system and a good notification system, there is nothing much left to develop for an app launcher style smartphone OS. Developers can pretty much add any features that users need/want.
Smartphone OS development/update graph is very logarithmic.. it slows down considerably after 2-3 updates. Expect the same with WP7
Expectations were high lets admit it, and a few were expecting something grand like only Apple and Jobs know how to put out.
Putting aside comments of "Android/WebOS" already had this, and the fact Apple took advantage of little things that were developed by other apps & services, at the end of the day its a good upgrade to iOS, which only brings values to us customers.
Couple of nice features (PC Free and iCloud) but I was hoping they'd let us in on the whole Nuance deal and their voice recognition, which didn't happen.

Maybe, but the important thing is that he has to resort to twitter to talk about it, and this is largely ignored by the world. So, for the general public, it won't matter whether Joe Belfiore thought ahead of Steve Jobs. And that's something Microsoft should worry about.
Me, not so much.

Many of us, Windows Phone users, have come to enjoy taking pictures and swiping to see the images (like a filmstrip) then swiping back to take another picture. It's a brilliant features and one I've come to be almost depended on.
Apple has apparently blandly ripoff the feature to iOS 5.
The most interesting part is that Microsoft has a patent for this feature: http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph...9619.PGNR.&OS=DN/20110119619RS=DN/20110119619

APPLE is running low on innovation, so copy and paste is the second best for them...
lets see what microsoft will do??
maybe apple just pay MS for it ?
Yeah, soon Microsoft will be making money from every iPhone that is sold just like the $5 they get from every android device sold, lol.
Microsoft dont even need to sell there own OS and they make money, its kind of unbelievable when you think about it, they win whichever OS is chosen by users.

Not gonna happen.
Microsoft doesn't sue Apple over patents, Apple doesn't sue Microsoft. They have so many patents that it would quickly turn into a nuclear war. Patents in this case are very similar to nukes because they assure mutual destruction.

+1
Agreed
And I expect we will see a notification menu like apple after they copied how notifications show on the display.
patents are lame, dead
software patents are lame and dead. the idea that someone owes you money for doing something in a similar manner is absurd. first to implement and grab the market wins.
Since the Windows Phone is somewhat unpopular among most people, I believe most of them do not know the Apple has actually steal this feature from there.

well you have to give them credit for putting a phone in the equation...up until the iphone everybody thought Apple was those computers that only rich people could own (from my perspective). You can't blame a company for innovative business strategy.

you haveto wait and see what will happen to this....
any way MS invested 150 million in apple in 1997 which was $4.5 billion in 2010, so maybe MS will close one eye on this...
HTC paid US$5/- for every android phone they built and sold, which was 30 million= US$150 million, and its spaculated that other ANDROID OEM's had paid MS US$7.50 to US$12.80 for each device they built or sold...
so maybe APPLE and MS do not fight but MS is collecting tons of money from patents they hold..

Agreed - I had a Windows CE phone YONKS ago! It was a Trium Mondo (still got it in my loft and it still works!) - then got a Siemens SX45 also Windows CE (still got that too and it works as well!)- Pretty sure that was before ANY iPhone!

Microsoft/Nokia Superbowl

Has anybody heard about Microsoft or Nokia planning a commercial for Superbowl. This would be the perfect opportunity for Microsoft or Nokia to debut a commercial showing off the OS among the many viewers who will be tuning into the Superbowl. Lots of people watch the superbowl just for the commercial. I hope some of that advertising money will bring about an amazing commercial for WP7.
I hope they do, and believe they will. Its a perfect time to advertise both WP & the Lumia's.
I guess they could push the 710. Seems too early to advertise the 900, that's ~6 weeks.
Ok the superbowl is amognst us today. Has anybody heard of any MS commercials that will be branding WP7.
This is the perfect time for MS to market their product like crazy. WP should have sponsored the superbowl. lol
If any commercials post them here:

There will be movie trailers for summer films during the Superbowl, so it's never to early to build up anticipation.
Samsung is planning a 4th quarter commercial stating something dramatic.
What does MS or Nokia have to rebound off of this

it will be interesting ... maybe bill gates and that comedian guy trying on shoes again ? LOL (just reserving a place to comment later
Was just a Samsung Galaxy Note commercial. Oh well.
Didn't see any iPhone or other droid commercials, also didn't see any carrier commercials cept for USCC, no sprint,no AT$T,no T-mob or Andrizon. So not a total disappointment.
Yeah, that commercial was pretty lame.
guy: "*GASP*, is that a pen?!"
Yes, and they were laughed out of existence in the early 2000's as completely cumbersome and useless.
And now it's some sort of godsend? No thanks, I've had a stylus device. There is no positive to it whatsoever.

The competition (with 90%+ market share) didn't advertise, so its ok that m$ (with -4%) didn't ? I figured people would be raising hell over a lack of marketing.
Also, the pen the note has is... well you should try it out...
Seems the official web-stream from NFL.com was a different story...
Ads for Verizon and the Samsung Galaxy II all over the place.

M$ is widely understood to mean microsoft, it seems the $ is derogatary or just a dollar sign, depending on the point of view.
The "-" was a typo., it was supposed to say 'around' 4%, which is a best guess, since there are no official sales numbers from M$. Last I read it was 43% android and 45% iphone, but those numbers change from source to source too.
Even if the samsung note ad was over the top, it has people talking. The stylus may have been a plan to get it even more free publicity, attracting the old palm pilot lovers, I don't really know. The screen size is a draw for me...
I was so disappointed that there wasn't an add for the Lumia 900.
It probably made the most sense, since the device is not expected for another month and a half...but still.

imo windows phone no-show is better than samsung paying millions for that stupid galaxy note commercial.

I have to say, nothing has tempted me to abondon Windows Mobile as much as Galaxy Note. For the artistically inclined, Galaxy Note is a godsend.
