I'm having trouble finding benchmarks or anything of the sort to figure out which ROM for the G2 is the fastest/best. Right now, I'm using CM7 Nightly, and it's definitely a huge improvement over the original, but before I settle in and keep it for good, I'm wondering if there's anything else I should consider.
Don't care about Sense UI or fancy animations or anything like that, just want something fast and simple (although I would like at least most of the CM7-specific options if possible, such as having the status bar at the bottom of the screen). Not interested in SD-based stuff, my SD card is only 8GB and class 2.
I gotta say I really liked coredroid but the mexidroid chili is the best rom I've used in my opinion. Smooth, battery is great, and its easy on the eyes.

Any idea how they compare to Pyromod or SuperCM7? I've seen mention and videos touting both as being very fast.
MeXdroid ghost chili is the smoothest and fastest rom I have used. You have to try it. You will not regret it.

Not a fan of pyromod..that bkahblah dude is a ****. Guys says "you CANT" use his stuff without asking and the first time he released pyro he openly admitted he bit of myjbarr. But whatever some people are cooler than other.
But I'm seriously not being biased when I say the hot chili is as responsive as iphone(yes haters iphone still has the smoothesg os in regards to responsiveness) give it a shot man its painless lol.

I agree with the post above. meXdroidMod is by far the best rom I have ever used. It's fast, stable and nice to look at.

Same here, of all the rom I've tested, MeXdroid Prechilli is the best so far.
Tested:
*Ultimate droid -blackdroid.
*all virtuous roms
*Insertcoin
*all villian series roms
I have to agree on the meXdroid as well.
Getting 3027 on Quadrant off of PyroMod 2.3.5, making it even faster than CM6 was. I would like to jump on the Mexdroid bandwagon, but it was laggy and I got force closes every two seconds (yes, I wiped). It only took me an hour to switch back to PM.
My quadrant with meXdroidMod is 3374. I will upload a screen shot when I get home.

my opinions (since I'm sick of seeing these threads and am having a bad morning ):
-mexdroid is ugly but functional. mjybarr apparently will be putting out a non-themed version.. possibly interested. I like the dev team, they are attentive and helpful.
-pyromod has stuck up, whiny devs (read the first few pages of their thread) and native a2sd on a device that has absolutely no use for external app storage/swap/compcache in the first place. just reeks all around if you ask me.
-all of the cm7 variants (aka every aosp gingerbread rom we have thus far with the exception of a couple built straight from the tmo gingerbread leak) are nearly identical to cm7 out of the box with the exception of adding/removing a few apks here and there, some theming and possibly some settings tweaks (vm heap size, wifi sleep policy, other useless things)... all things you can do yourself from the base. there are some proprietary scripts and apps that some devs have bundled with their releases, but most I've seen feel more like marketing ploys (use our rom because we have this!!!) than anything I'd ever actually utilize.
-there is no such thing as the "fastest" or "best" gingerbread rom. if your measuring stick for what is fastest or best is a quadrant score.. well, I just hope it isn't.
-if you want an aosp gb rom, just get cm7, uninstall adw and any other extraneous system apps, and go. you'll get updates before any of the other roms (considering they're building from CM source) and you will have a huge community to turn to in the event that you run into a bug.
DISCLAIMER: I appreciate, regardless of whether or not I use, all of the hours of work our devs/chefs put into creating cool stuff for us. I am not name-calling, belittling or in any other way demeaning members of xda, simply stating my opinion based off of months and months of observation in the Vision development scene.

I wouldn't say pyromod devs are stuck up. But a little bit jerkish yeah, but who isn't now adays. Mexdroid.....that's exaclt why I haven't used it. I heard it was great fast and the devs are cool but I just don't like the alien cartoon look so I hope they make a normal looking one. Ill jump then. Pyros last two updates I haven't been able to restore my apps. Only rom it has happened on. But like pmc said...your best bet is to just go cm7 since damn near all are based off of it. Or just go personal prefernce after trial and error.

I just tried the new version of Pyromod today. It really does seem a hair faster than CM, but it's hell on my battery. (Losing about 1% a minute)
I'm going back to Cyanogen right now.
I'm not getting a battery drain with PyroMod 2.3.5. People must really be addicted to Angry Birds for that.
Sent from a Western Union telegram.
Lol, I promise you, Angry Birds wasn't the problem. I don't use my phone for games.
I was experiencing a battery drain when the phone was sitting on my desk with the screen off. I don't use facebook or twitter (and I uninstalled the apps that came preloaded with the ROM) and I turned my RSS reader/podcast updates off just to make sure that wasn't the cause. I even tried turning off mobile data and sync... didn't make a difference. (I also did a battery calibration, and tried three different spare batteries I have)
<shrugs> I'm not sure what caused it, I have a lot of different apps, so it's certainly possible one of them was the cause. The android battery usage report showed that the drain was coming from Screebl (it attributed 98% of battery use to Screebl) but I read some info on the Screebl forum page about Android reporting battery usage incorrectly, and honestly, I've been using Screebl for a long time and I've never had that experience, so I tend to believe the info provided by the Screebl developer on that subject.
Either ways, I'm back to CM 7.1 RC1 now and the battery drain is gone.
Pyromod really was nice looking though, and I gotta admit, it felt a little zippier then the base Cyanogen. If I could figure out what was causing the battery drain, I'd try it again for sure.

I could see how some people might think this would be a stupid thread to start, but being a rom noob and this being my first android phone i thought this would be helpful for others like me. I personally work from 6am-7pm and need my phone after work and can only really flash and play around with one rom a night if that. I think a lot of these rom's are based of other roms for other phones, like cm7 (correct me if i'm wrong). If people could just talk about previous experiences such as if you used Kingdom Rewind 3d for your Dinc1, CM7 on another phone or just you're general experiences with the roms that have come out so far and what you feel are the least glitchy, has the most features, best batery life etc.
This does not belong in the development section.

I ran CM7 on my Dinc. It was a stable fast ROM but it is like a blank canvas. You have to make it what you want it to be. If you like to have lots of options and don't need any of the Sense widgets I think it makes the most sense. It is almost absurdly configurable.
If you like the Sense widgets then I would wait and see if the Skyraider ROM is ported over. It seemed to be the most stable and fast of the modified Sense ROMS.
My .02 and I agree with cheifkeiff.

If you need reliability, I would highly recommend one of the debloated stock ROMs. These will have the stability of stock without the bloatware.
If reliability is not exactly a requirement but you like Sense, can't really recommend anything. I, personally, don't like Sense and have not tried any Sense based ROM.
If reliability is not so much an issue, and you can do without Sense, CM7 is actually quite stable and reliable. I say use this if reliability is not an issue because it has only community support should something not work right.
MIUI is a really different experience with customization brought to a whole new level. Its like what I would imagine iOS 5 to be like, plus all the awesome associated with Android. I use setCPU to throttle the CPU when the screen is off, and with medium use throughout the day I get about 14 hours out of the battery.

Well, there's no perfect answer to this question. The best 2.3 ROM is the one that works best on your phone. Every ROM performs just a bit differently on each person's phone. Apps added and other changes made can also effect this. Our Epics can be like a second girlfriend...one minute giving you all kinds of love and happiness and the next minute can be a real pain in the ass...wait maybe I need a new girlfriend!

Yup, its all about trial and error. I can't tell you how many times I have tried a ROM and its worked perfect only for other users to report constant force closes. When you do find the ROMs that work perfect you will be a very happy camper. It pains me to run a stock setup now.

CM7.
jk. But I'd check out acs bamboozled...best gb rom I've used so far.
I've tried two (or three) 2.3 based roms and there has been a couple of things that have always caused me to go back to SRF 1.2:
No custom kernels = no overclock - I'm not a huge overclocking type of guy, but I always like to have it clocked at 1.12 or 1.2 ghz, just enough to keep it smooth but not high enough to run it hot or drain my battery.
No custom kernels = Cannot use Galaxy Tuner - I use Google Music as my primary source of car music, which means I needed to find an external app to use as an equalizer. Voodoo sound didn't work and Tuner froze on me every time I tried to use it.
Still Very buggy - I've run into a few bugs that have always irritated me, no matter how small they were. Whether it's something that freezes my phone or just kills the frame rate, I've just always been bugged (get it?) by bugs.
But where there is bad things, there have been a lot of good things that I absolutely loved about 2.3, almost enough to stay with it:
Live Backgrounds - For me, they've seem to have gotten better (stock ones anyways) and, as far as I could tell, they don't murder my battery or frame rate. The one I loved the most was this awesome looking clock that was a bunch of circles. It's hard to explain...
Screen off Animation - More eye candy, but awesome eye candy. Not much to say other then I love watching my phone turn off
Everything just seemed so smooth - Scrolling, opening apps up, etc, just seemed so fluid and clean, even if the frame rate was dropping for some reasons.
------
Those are some of my personal pro's and con's on deciding whether to run 2.3 at this time or not. For me, the con's on top were more important then the pro's on the bottom. Needs are different for each person so I'm sticking with 2.2 for now until either the official release of 2.3 is out or we can start adding kernels and themes (etc etc).

You know there can be no custom kernels until source code is released. But as for overclocking, many have had success with Tegrak from the market that has allowed overclocking on the GB leaked ROMS.

Yea, I'm slowly learning all that, I just didn't know at the time. As for Tegrak, I heard it's a major drain on the battery for some reason, but maybe results vary from user to user. Overclocking wasn't a huge concern for me, it was the other two on there that kind of got to me. I'm still happy with 2.2 so that's why I've decided to wait it out

hmm i never tried compkid's regeneration or inception roms. How are they?
as for the topic we are on now, i left acs1.2 the day eg22 came out and yeah al though for some things i would love to go back to acs1.2 but the scale is heavier for me on the gb side.
I used go green, team era's scrambled eggs and tried all the randomrom 2.3 versions (eagle, egret, osprey). The most stable rom for me is randomrom osprey. It is fast enough, great on battery and everything works well with it (other lauchers, apps, etc). As for scrambled eggs, man i loved how snappy that rom was. It was extremely quick upon the click but unfortunately it wasnt working that good with a few launcher and apps and way too many force closes but still fast. Even though i feel scrambled eggs was snappier than osprey, i did receive much higher quadrant scores with osprey (not that quadrant actally matters to me, just for the sake of seeing the scores).
GoGreen was meh for me and i am definitely anticipating an update for scrambled eggs..
I first went with Bamboozle, and it was good. Then one day there are 3 EG22 Roms here it seemed.
So I tried RandomRom and I was having an awful time after 2 days with FC's and reboots.
I then loaded Scrabmled Eggs yesterday and I have been clean (other than google Nav). I am checking battery life now, but I am doing better now than I was with RandomRom. I have to think I was doing something wrong with RandomRom cuz my battery life was terrible and the FC's. I did the same thing each time I installed them, but as said before, each phone is different.
Good luck!

I was running the scrambled eg22v4, just installed v7 this morning and so far it seems a little better. Only complaint is my battery seems to be going down a little faster, but it could be cuz I've been messing with loading stuff and resetting everything up. I'll give more feedback when I've had it a few days. ACS Go Green wasn't bad either.
CM9 seems to be making good progress and seems to be generating lots of excitement.
I'm trying to decide if this is for me. I've been reading some of the threads, but can't seem to find clear answer to some basic questions:
What are the advantage of CM9 and ICS?
Is about new "killer" features which are only available on ICS? If yes, what are they?
Or is it simply about having the latest/newest thing? (A sentiment I can identify with, but which I currently don't share)
Are there any advantages/disadvantages in terms of smoothness/speed, more/less memory, better/worse battery usage, stability/instability, or other general areas which aren't necessarily associated with any one feature?
(I realize CM9 is still in alpha mode; I've read the bug list and I think I can live with that for now if there are overall positive advantages).
I thank you in advance for responding (or for pointing me to another post/thread where these questions are clearly answered).
Its really about the newest GUI that makes it to die for. Its surprisingly smooth for an alpha does a little bit more battery consumption because it is a new OS version and all new OS are going to require more resources and RAM and other things in order run so the ovbious. Its really all up to your prefrence if you want the latest and greatest go for it. If you like your current setup and don't feel like the move is that important by all means stay. Its all opinion whether or not you make the "jump" is all up to you. I tried to unbiased as possible since I'm on it

Nice well written question. Couple of quick observations on my part...battery is a little worse, stability is phenomenal, it uses a little more RAM, there are apps available exclusively for ICS and there will be more, it is very quick and snappy, and definitely for me about running the latest and also not available for the non-roots out there.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I think the real question here is why not? What advantages do you have on stock that outweighs CM9? on a more serious note, I like to stick with the herd that unifies the updating experience into one rom instead of scattered roms. Hence, Cyanogenmod for me. Stock is still awesome, expecially toadlife and other stockish roms by others. Useful for dialer codes.

I had the same question last Saturday, so I finally decided to made the jump and I'm liking it so far. It gives u a feeling of a new phone. I'm not regretting my decision but wish the battery was better. But I think u gonna like it
if I helped u in any way pls DONT hit the thanx button... I'm not a thanx-whore.
The only 2 reasons I know of to NOT jump to CM9 is the video tearing issue and the unavoidable fact that the battery lasts for less time.
If neither of these are a major concerns, CM9 should be your go to build.
Everything seems pretty much set to go, but CM9 is missing a few elements in respect to customization, that have yet to come upstream (hence the Alpha tag), themes is an example, but you can load them the old fashioned way if you want.
I would have to say don't worry about it using more RAM and battery. I ran the v6 supercharger and my RAM consumption is super low. Juice defender has also worked great for battery life. Waaay better than the phones stock capabilities.

Its worked great for me. I like to jump around roms and try new stuff a lot and I've stuck with cm9 for a while. Like it a lot...no crashes...no problems....only drawback might be battery life BUT I'm always around a charger so I'm not too worried about that

Agreed, I'm looking forward to seeing what new apps will be available with ICS.
There really are no standouts as to why cm9 is better to me, until I actually use it. Everything works better to me. Copy paste, options such as chrome browser w the sweet quick zoom option. Better t9 dialer as stock el30 only searched first or last name and cm9 searches both. There are many more little things that make it much improved to me. Folders are simple and easily organized. Very smooth w the right tweaks and overall my experience is better. I have a plethora of batteries now but battery life appears to be the same as gbread for me. I heavily use this phone for many purposes and haven't used gbread since October (had an ns4g) but for maybe a day or two. It works better for me.
I personally like CM9 due to the latest and greatest, however my biggest feature for CM9 is the bridging the gab between my laptop PC and my mobile devices. with ICS, I can natively sync chrome for example, which is a HUGE benefit for me when I have tons of bookmarks. I LOVE the UI changes in Google Apps, like GMail and Maps.
All in all, I have no problems with the build and say anyone that needs to bridge the gap between their devices should switch.
My two cents
Happy flashing!
if you want more settings control for things like app permissions then cm9 is not "there" yet (upstream issue NOT our amazing devs). Otherwise as others have said, it seems faster/more responsive. I've been using it since the first release. minimal bugs and annoyances but workable (for me at least) as a daily driver. I use zeam as my launcher so the visual diff from cm7 to cm9 did not seem all that much. It is nice to be able to take advantage of newer apps like chrome etc. I do miss the extra options/config available in cm7..

Thanks to all who replied.
No one has yet enumerated clearly the "killer features". But I hear it's more responsive - though it uses more juice. I'm hearing that it's a new experience. I suppose I'll have to try it out myself and decide. So far I've already converted to mtd. Now I can try it without a large time investment.

i think the major changes are internal at this point. by using cm9 you are extending the "life" of your phone another year or so.. and by 'life' i guess i mean ability to take advantage of the wide range of new ics things (apps/improvements etc) as they come out.. the good news is you can always wait and do it later when things mature..

Hello
Im a proud owner of DesireZ, got it from my provider for free, and I could not possibly think of a better phone than this. On stock clock - it runs high graphic games, and it runs smooth. I really cant imagine what would someone do with announced Exynos 2Ghz on SGS3, apart from resolution requirements. But than again, everything above ~250ppi is just retarded, by my standards. This HTC phone is perfect for me.
so, my question is -
1. need to replace stock rom with something good
2. need fully working phone (camera also, so no ICS for me, I guess )
3. need info on Sense version that doesnt cause bugs and problems, cause I have read lots of topics with people complaining. (lagging after couple of hours, need restart and so on)
4. CM, or ICS, or some pre-tunned Gingerbread .. ?
As I have done this before with some similar devices, please link the following to me:
1. root instructions
2. backup instructions
3. best OS by my requirements (smoothness, no bugs, and pre-installed OC software are priority)
and that's it
Im sorry in advance, cause there will surely be someone that says - use search, but Im making it like this cause regular visitors of site can find that with much more ease than I could. Appreciate help in advance.
Welcome to the DZ/G2 forums!
The procedure of using gfree to root and carrier unlock your DZ is in my signature. Depending on your current installed version of ROM, you may or may not have to downgrade your phone.
The most stable versions of ROMs that I have personally tried are the following.
Virtuous Sense: The closest stock DZ ROM you can get with optimizations and tweaks. It's been debloated of carrier crap and has an OC kernel up to 1.5GHz if I am not mistaken. The best GB Sense experience you can get IMO.
Virtuous G-Lite: The closest stock G2 ROM you can get with optimizations and tweaks. Debloated of T-Mobile's carrier crap and also OC-able to about 1.5GHz. Very light weight and able to go out 2-3 days on the stock battery on a single charge depending on usage. I would, however, recommend ditching LauncherPRO in favor of GOLauncherEX though.
Thanks man!
It is not carrier locked, cause supply stock of Serbian Telekom was only few and they didnt bother, it is a plain simple out-of-the-factory Desire Z.
If I choose G-lite, can I flash my regular DesireZ, are there limitations between G2/DZ .. ?
Does OC-ing to, lets say - 1.2Ghz shorten battery life ?
I like this G-lite, as I am aware of the fact that Android generally drains much more than other OSes, as I had HTC Blackstone. 4 days on WM6.5, 1 day on Android.
If you want a Sense 3.5 ROM, but a bit refreshed, I've been using Android Revolution for a few days and it's amazingly smooth compared to the other 3.5 ones.
I would HIGHLY recommend G2 Slim. It's the latest t-mobile release of gingerbread for the G2, but it has nearly everything unnecessary removed and it has the best battery life out of ALL the ROMs on our devices.
It's a very smooth ROM with all features working, it is a bit basic but there's nothing you can't really fix with apps from the market. It's very very fast, has ridiculous amounts of free RAM, it's great with multitasking and it's even very quick when it comes to app performance.
Virtuous G-Lite is basically the same as G2 Slim, except it's much faster. It seems like the extra speed of G-Lite comes at the cost of battery life though. That said, the battery life on both of those ROMs is amazing, so you can't go wrong with either of them.
Otherwise, if you're looking for something different and a little bit fun, try out the latest gingerbread release of MIUI . You will fall in love with the theming abilities of that ROM.
Get miui, looks good, and just works. ... MIUI Android (GB)
I would highly recommend AOSP, be it G2Slim or EliteMod.
Sense and MIUI can be fun to play with, but they're just toys IMO and like to eat your RAM and battery life. They do each offer some pretty kickin' features that AOSP doesn't but I still prefer the base experience as it offers the most stability, battery-life, and overall smoothness.
Happy to hear you like the phone, I'm going on a year and a month now and I still love it! I have nothing but praises for this thing, the flash even almost survived me! But alas I have to replace it after one too many accidental hits of the Torch quick setting.

I agree with this, G2 Slim and Virtuous G-lite are both fantastic AOSP ROMs that you should try out.
I like how you all automatically assume that I know the "AOSP" abreviation, but google helped me on that one
played last night with all OS-es you recommended, and in the process I made a routine with flashing so now I know what im doing, and this is hard - in terms of what to choose It is now that I actually see the potential of this phone. XDA support for this device is just awesome, one of the most supported devices generally.
@buxtahuda - had a lots of smartphones before this one, all lost due to failures:
HD2 - was crappy in terms of assemble, got loose and had really bad plastic. When I opened it it was clear that HTC assembly was not good at that time
iPhone 3g - after 6 months of usage without protection and pocket time, it looked like it had a fight with Optimus Prime.
SGS1 - fell from 2 feet and the scene looked like I dropped i light bulb - into 100 pieces. even Cornig Gorilla glass that has only one flaw - side pressure, managed to crack
DesireZ is on a whole another level. I actually managed to drop it 5th day of usage because I replaced bundle headphones (that's the only thing that sucks) and didnt have cable-control, and trying to change a song while running on high-cardio excercise (weight loss process). It fell down also having momentum cause of running and it tubmled for 4-5 meters:
still cant find where are the scratches. really, I placed it under a magnifying glass and I cant find where are the scratches from f'in concrete! awesome materials and assembly by HTC
Rooting your phone, getting S-OFF to install other Roms
Hello and have fun with your Desire Z!
Full instructions for HTC Desire Z and T-Mobile G2 Root and FULL S-OFF can be found on http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=HTC_Vision#Rooting_the_G2
When you need support for getting S-OFF you can join the IRC channel #G2ROOT on freenode. Browser access on webchat.freenode.net . After joining the IRC webchat you can change to channel #G2ROOT using the command "/join #G2ROOT".
My favorite ROMs for the HTC Desire Z are:
* Virtuous Affinity 2.05: A little bit slow, but great experience
* Virtuous G-Lite 2.0.1: Very fast, some special software might have issues
* CyanogenMod 7.1: Great overall ROM, respectable speed and stable.
Try the ROMs and decide for yourself!
For backing up applications I recommend using Titanium Backup (Pro), for backing up your system you can use ClockworkRecovery and RomManager.
When you want to install more than one ROM on your phone at the same time then try BootManager (from Google Play). Might not work with all ROMs but is really good to try things!
Good Luck.
Congrats on your new phone! The Desire Z is starting to show its age, but considering the developer base and the fact that you got it for free, I'd say you got a pretty good deal.
Personally, I like MIUI and CyanogenMod 7. CM7 is a classic, and everyone loves it for the degree to which it preserves stock Android, while adding on a few improvements here and there. MIUI, on the other hand, gives you a complete re-imagining of the Android interface, and it can be great to use. I find myself alternating between the two every couple months, actually. That's the beauty of the Desire Z, though: the widespread developer support means you get that kind of flexibility!
I agree that Cyanogenmod 7 is fantastic but for me, i could NEVER eliminate the constant battery drain issues that i had with it no matter what. I'd still recommend it to newcomers but i think simpler ROMs like G-lite or G2 Slim are much better.
I generally like to have a clean and consistent looking UI on any ROM that i use and CM7's styling seemed to always take a way from the stock gingerbread feel that i was looking for. That's my opinion.
Right now, i'm using Virtuous G-lite and now i know what it's like to have a really really fast phone xD.
As far as Sense ROMs go, my experience showed me that Virtuous Affinity 2.05.0 was the fastest and most stable out of all the Sense 3.* ROMs.
After many tries, I decided to stay on G-lite mainly cause of the battery, but I would also like to give a chance to Virtuous Sense, cause it seemed (for a hour of usage) like a pretty decent ROM.
MIUI reppeled me with the iPhony look, that's sometnig I want to avoid in the future, even if it has only a fraction to do with rotten Apple.
The best option would be, if anyone ever creates it, ICS based system with the "strip-down" settings like G-lite. that I would like very much
Anyways, this phone is Awesome. I did not have a hype like this with any other phone, and as I stated, I had them all shortly after release (HD2, SGS1, iPhone 3G). The only thing that's bothering me is metal back-cover which I guess will be all bumpy in the future (I hate putting my phone in covers and skins) But I guess I could recreate it out of metal, since I am good with power tools and fine cutting of stuff, and like to do that kind of projects
Hello hello!
So, I've had my evo for ages, (ages in modern tech terms of phones evolving, not an actually long time by human means) and, long story short, got a new phone, don't have the new phone, back on the evo.
I have the twin turbo GTR ROM and the battery life on my phone sucked. It wasn't the ROM, just letting you know that's what I have if it matters for this question!
So, I decided upon getting an extended battery. (I think 3500 or 4500 mAh, I can check when I get home, the case is fairly stuck on right now) and....I can't figure this thing out. The guide said that the phone will charge to 1,500, say 100%, but not truly be full, so you will need to leave it plugged in.....So I did, and upon unplugging it.....dropped, 99, 98, 97, all within about 10 minutes (normal for the evo, not for this new battery I would assume).
So, how do I make this work? What's the trick? I assume I can actually change the battery....settings(?) in the phone. I remember while in recovery seeing something about resetting the battery settings, and I vaguely remember something about DO NOT TOUCH THAT EVER UNLESS YOU KNOW WHY. Would now be a good time?
TL;DR; New extended battery, tips to get the most use of it? Also, since I am rooted and recoveried, what tricks can I do to make it properly read the new battery and it's larger mAh size.
****If you have a good ROM that you must recommend, or kernal, I am okay with that. I have no love for anything on my phone currently, kernel. rom, recovery, I'll replace it if you guys have good suggestions.
Thank you very much in advance!
First off, you want an SBC kernel on your ROM. Mason G if you have gingerbread, which you do, or Mason I if you're on ICS. Mazwoz's if you choose JB. Flash the appropriate kernel, charge the battery. Leave it on the charger for an extra hour for the hell of it and use it normally and let it drain fully. Recharge to full and it should calibrate. If not, there are plenty of battery calibration apps in the market.

Awesome thank you! Also, if you or anyone knows, when i was using my evo last, they just started getting ics on it. I remember 4g was broken, and it seems now with the ics and JB roms, it's the same story. Are they planning on finding fix, or is it known that 4g will mst likely only work on GB? Either way I'll reflash my stuff, make sure I have the right stuff, charge, drain, and see how that goes. I would love to use JB simply to see if project butter helps my phone. The only phones I've used it on are at least 2-6x more powerful than my evo, so I can't tell how much project butter is helping, versus the few extra Ghz and cores.

4G and FFC will likely never work. This device has been losing life at a steady rate. As far as JB, there are some good choices. With the proper set up and tweaking, it can become a daily. Well supported JB ROMs are evervolv, Mazwoz's JB, black bean AOKP, Baked AOKP, RemICS JB, and a couple others. All worth a try.

Yeahhhh. That's why I switched to my S2 but long story short, here I am again with my Evo.
Have you used the JB ROMs? Does the project butter make it better than a GB ROM that is tweaked for speed?
I think tomorrow at work I may spend the day trying new ROMs so I may just see for myself, but input would be appreciated! Also, thank you for all the help so far

I've tried most all JB ROMs. I even developed one. They run well but still not as well as original gingerbread. The 2.3.5 kind. Not the CM7 kind. Never really liked it. Personal opinion though. If you want a perfect Gingerbread ROM, check of Decks ReLoaded or some of MBQsniper's work. As for jellybean, try the ones I listed. You'll find something you like, guaranteed.

I have used all the jb ROMs out there. They are usable if you over look the small things. No FFC, GPS, a few glitches in video. Miui is not good yet. But most all builds before 4.2 are very good and 4.2 will be there before long.
If you want a good sense with all bells and whistles sense 3.5 works. Only glitch is htcfacebook.apk but FFC GPS BT everything works. On 3500 battery 1 get 24 hr heavy use 12 hrs streaming videos. Normal use 4 days and minimal use up to 8 days. Same goes for the sense 1.0 ROMs. For me I have not had much luck with 3.0 sense.
I have flashed almost everything out over the past 2 years I have had an evo.
As far as special tricks for extended battery there recall are none. Just plug it in and use it.

I have seen a few people ask this question- (will project butter help my phone?) Well project butter isn't actually a thing, it isn't an app or a system, its more of an idea. And the idea is to make the system run as smooth as butter. You can't dig through your system and find Google.projectbutter.apk lol. It is optimizations and implications for ease of use within the new phones coming out, and likely what they implement won't help on our evos because of our aging out of date hardware.

Are you sure? I know it isn't one thing, but I very clearly remember reading that google did some sneaky tricks to get things running more smoothly, but I felt like it had to do with just basically making the hardware work more effeciently than it currently was.
"How is all of this done you might ask, well Google have used a variety of methods to accomplish it, ranging from something called “vsync timing” (which is making sure there's a consistent frame rate across all screen drawings and animations) and triple buffering, which helps the over frame rates appear a lot better. There's also a nifty system that tries to predict where you’ll go next on your device and help you get there quicker; awesome. Project Butter allows smartphones to take a bit more power from their processors and allows you to step down on accelerate right when it’s needed. "
I read stuff basically like that. I suppose the more correct question would be, will putting a jelly bean OS on my phone make it run smoother than my current GB ROM. I usually understand that the newer ROMs on older phones tend to mean more lag and whatnot, but if the project butter tweaks make it run BETTER than the older ROMs, I may want to use it.
However, I am getting my S2 back tomorrow! That will have JB on it once it's back in my hands, and that thing was silky smooth with ICS so I'm not worried.
As a general question though, have people noticed differences from ICS to JB for speed, responsiveness, and smoothness?
