Help Please, Phone stuck on Red M Logo. - Defy General

I have to firstly say I am a complete noob, infact, the Defy is my first smartphone.
So far i have......
Rooted Phone
Performed a nandroid backup
Installed 2nd init
Installed CM7
Everything was going so well until i noticed there were no google apps. I installed gapps zip file after re installing recover (to install the zip file from boot menu). Ever since then, my phone wont make it past the red Motorola logo. I cant even get back into the boot menu?
Please Help

If you have 2nd Init installed , press Vol Down whenthe blue LED blinks during startup.
If that fails, hold the Vol Down button and then power on your cell, you'll enter default recovery. Clear cache/data and start again.
Also, if you are using CM7 RC1 or above, there should be no need to install gapps.zip separately.

Thanks for the reply mate.
Phone wont get to blue light before freeze. RE the vol down power on menu, all i get is an android dude with a triangle with an Exclamation point in it?

sorry i should have written this in my first reply, when you see the exclamation point, press Vol Up + vol down TOGETHER, and you'll see the recovery menu.

at this point press vol up and down at the same time..and wipe

The only options i get on there are.....
Reboot system now
Apply sdcard:update.zip
Wipe data/factory reset
Wipe cache partition.
Tried them all and no luck

try this one
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1147967
in the 4th post, you can try that and flash it again

Never ending problems mate. Cant get RSD lite to work.
Keep getting.....
"failed flashing process. Failed flashing process. unable to retrieve initialization values from INI file"
Running as administrator and have tried 2 different SFB files.
Im giving up all hope, been reading forums all day and my eyes are starting to hurt.

I installed CM7 RC1 and market etc werent there.

Don't give up hope yet, people have recovered their Defy from even worse conditions. All this could be an outcome of a chain of mistakes so lets stat from scratch.
1. Is your battery charged? Does it show charging LED when plugged in wall charger while turned OFF ?
2. Which OS do you have? also 64bit or 32?
3. Which Motorola Driver and RSDLite version do you have?
4. Where did you download the SBF files from? paste the link to that thread.
5. How are you flashing the SBF? (what steps do you take)
Also, try this:
Pull out the battery, Hold Defy in your one hand and press Vol Up+Down+Power button all together. Now, quickly insert the battery with the other hand keeping those buttons pressed and you will be taken to stock recovery.
Only Wipe data and wipe cache, do not install update.zip or anything else.
Once done restart the cell and let us know what happens.

thats a common problem related to the version of RSDlite..
use 5.3.1 and try to flash again..
All the best

Got it sorted at last. Just needed RSD Lite 4.9.
Still had issues after, but managed to sort em out by installing CM7 then Gapps, rebooting then factory resetting data and cache.
A long struggle, but got there in the end.
Many thanks to everyone who helped me out, I am so grateful.

can u tell me which SBF u used that worked? any link ?

[Q] Make ClockwordMod complete backup?

Hi,
I recently rooted my phone through VISIONary+ r14 and today downloaded ROM Manager. I flashed ClockworkMod Recovery, but I can't back up my current ROM (stock/branded). I want to make a complete 100% backup of my current phone to be able to restore later if I need to.
However, I don't know how to do it. There is a 'Backup current ROM' option on ROM Manager, but whenever I do it my phone restarts showing the black screen with the phone and the red Caution exclamation mark + triangle, so I have to hold Volume Up and the Power button to restart my phone.
What do I do?
Also, it may be worth mentioning my Desire HD is a Vodafone Australia branded phone which hasn't been updated at all.
Well, the triangle image thingy means you dont have recovery flashed...
So, you have to choose 'Flash ClockworkMod Recovery' first. - That wil download a file from the internet and install it for you, so make sure you have internet connection
That will flash/install a recovery for you, in which you can create a backup.
Oh and i think you need to S-OFF your phone before installing recovery (im not sure about that but thats what i've heard)
click here for S-OFF http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=855403 --the last process says that after S-OFF you can install CWM recovery

Can you confirm if you did this separately to ROM Manager or as per above, used the Flash Recovery option in ROM Manager?
Have you confirmed you do have root?
If you reboot into recovery do you get to the clockworkmod recovery screen? What version is it?
If root can't be confirmed, re-do the visionary method. If root is confirmed but can't get to CWM-R do as per above and flash recovery from RM console.
Yes, I can confirm it is rooted.
I just ENG S-OFFed, so I'm going to try flashing recovery once again, although I'm still pretty sure it worked before that since Clockworkmod says "Current Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.6, Latest Recovery: ClockworkMod 3.0.2.6"
Will I do damage flashing it again?
EDIT: I pressed Flash ClockworkMod Recovery again and it waited for a little and then said that it was successful.
EDIT 2: Attempting another backup... And it's working!
No, you won't damage the it.
As I fly through different ROM's and do lot's of restores and backups I often have times where I need to reflash recovery.
look uot the link in my signature and try to do what it explanes......
Do all fases of rooting and you will have a perfectly rooted phone.
Also follow suggestions of CodeNameUnknown1.
Try man....Try

Great news!! Glad you got it sorted so far.
So, I have a problem.
I pressed the Backup option in ROM Manager, and the phone restarted, I'm now in Recovery mode... But I have a very strange problem. I can't make any selections.
I can scroll through the menu options fine, but can't select anything. If I press the power/lock button, the menu goes away and the clockworkmod logo in the middle just brightens up. If I press the home or menu buttons, the same thing happens, and if I press them again the menu just reappears. The return and search buttons do nothing except vibrate. What the hell?
That's an odd one.
Can you boot into recovery by turning phone off then holding vol- press power button and go to recovery from there? Does this do the same thing?
If same then I would uninstall ROM Manager and flash the recovery again via fastboot (in which case you can download the 3.0.2.8 version (page 3 ish of the development forum). Then try again.
Then re-install ROM Manager (which will show wrong version but ignore it).
At the moment I'm having trouble trying to turn off the phone at all :S looks like I'm actually going to have to open this horrible battery cover.
EDIT: After a battery pull I tried holding the Vol+ button and power button but it has just booted normally.
I can't actually try the vol- and power because my volume down button simply doesn't work...
EDIT 2: Uninstalled ROM Manager, reinstalled, booted into Recovery Mode, now it's backing up right next to me! Yay!
So I assume that, once it's done, I just take one big file it makes and put it on my laptop or something?
EDIT 3: Okay, one more step and I should be completely rooted with no hassles.
Will this method (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=857537) work for a branded phone? It says it requires a stock kernel. My phone meets all other requirements, but is the kernel of a Vodafone AU branded Desire HD 'stock' enough to work with this S-OFF tool? I would attempt it but I'm a little worried I might screw something up.

[Q] Bricked Moto Defy

I have bricked my Motorola Defy.
I have tried flashing a new ROM using RSD Lite (following this guide). It says 'complete' but my phone will not turn on. Sometimes it will just show the Moto boot logo but never fully boot up. I can only open the boot menu.
The ROMs I have tried flashing can be found here (All UK 2.1 at the top of the page).
Background - I got into this mess by attempting to flash the Gingerbread UI ROM (here).
Does anyone have any ideas? I would really appreciated any suggestions.
Thank you.
Probably you have flashed a firmware which cannot be downgraded to eclair. Try to get again in the bootloader and flash a froyo build (the official french one, for instance).
Hope this helps
Sent from my MB525 using XDA App
but supposedly it is still an éclair ROM so it shouldn't be the reason... best thing would be to flash an original 2.1 rom, I'm sure you can find one on the development section. Make sure to have a fully charged battery though - charge it on someone else's phone, for example.
It's most likely a problem with cache. Power your phone with Volume Down holded, when in recovery press Volume Up + Down, clear data/factory reset, clear cache.

Just an update...
All ROMS I have tried have installed OK through RSD Lite. The result is always 'Finished' or 'PASS'. But then when I try to turn my phone on, it never boots up.
I really appreciate the replies so far. If anyone has any further ideas, I would love to hear them.
Thank you.
UPDATE
I have just flashed the latest froyo leaked ROM as suggested around the net. Slight progress, the phone now boots to the moto boot logo but no further?
Does anyone have any ideas from here?
Thank you.
you do know that after flashing an sbf it takes a very LONG time to boot the first time! I just hope you are not giving up after a a couple minutes of M logo and pulling the battery or something it literally takes like 5 minutes.
You said you are still able to enter bootmenu? That is not possible after flashing an sbf, as it wipes the bootmenu away! Are you talking about bootloader?
Pull the battery and immediately put it back in while holding vol down. If the phone does not turn on just by inserting the battery then continue to hold vol down and press the power button for about 3 seconds, do not let go of vol down. Continue holding vol down until stock recovery appears.
Once you're in stock recovery press vol up AND vol down at the SAME TIME. Now use the volume toggle to select wipe date/factory reset, use the power button to make your selection, then wipe cache partition. Reboot
Walk away for like 5-10 minutes and check back on it.. Theres no reason it shouldn't work

Hey,
I have just got back from dropping of the phone with T-Mobile - Damm!!!!!!!
Thanks for the detailed explanation. I must have talking about the bootloader. Not the menu. I will head back to the shop in the morning and collect it back off them. Hopefully as it is a Saturday they have not sent it off?
Sooooo frustrating!!!!!!!!
I will update you when I have got it back and tested the above.
Thanks again,
Chris.
LOL I know what you mean... I had instant heart failure the first time I was stuck in a bootloop!!! Thought I wasted $400
I just panicked and gave up.. damm! Loads of people have said that its almost impossible to brick a defy. Fingers crosses thats true!! Lol
First, sorry for my english.
I have a similar problem. I flashed the official french froyo.
First it runs good. But today, two days later, the defy reseted automaticaly.
Several times.
Then I did a wipe. At the end the defy reseted automaticaly and stopped at the motorola logo. I flashed again. At the end of the flash, when RSD boots the defy, it stopped at the logo again. After...it must have been 15 minutes I pulled the battery and tried to get into the bootloader for a wipe.
But I can't enter the bootloader (vol up + power). The motorola logo appears and nothing happens. The last time I waited over 30 minutes.
OK, I have my phone back from T-Mobile...here it goes!!! (fingers crossed).
EDIT
Battery is out - will re-charge with the USB cable trick..

Hi,
I think you should read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1065798 and check that you have the right version of bootmenu.
Answer n°5 may help you to start over again.
I have been through this a few days ago, it is quite easy but there is a lot of reading.
The most important thing is to read everything so you can understand what you do.
thx for the quick answer i have try step five but when i do that it bring me to a black screen with a white triangle and a ! in it. i really dont know what else to do
hit both volume buttons at same time it will make a menu visable then choose factory reset
also cm7 flashes a new bootloader so you might have to flash reboot into recovery for cm7 then install again
holding both volume button and the power one does not work it bring me to cyanogene boot loop
You have to press them when you are in the stock recovery menu.
but i cant go in the stock recovery menu or i dont know how cause pressing the down buton i still go to the boot loop and if i do power plus down button i get to a triangle with a ! inside it
To enter stock recover do:
Shutdown phone
Start phone by pressing power + volume down (hold both keys for a few seconds)
Once the android with the exclamation mark is displayed push volume up and down at the same time.
Then you're in stock recovery.
that's great man thx, and what to do once im in there?
wipe data and factory reset
it tell me 4 thing
reboot system( do nothing)
apply sd card :update.zip (saying there is nothing like that on my sd)
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
i would like to know what to do from this point on cause i got nothing now in my phone
i did the wipe data and factory reset now when i start my phone it stay on the M logo
now reflash cm7
alright i did flash but i put back 2.2.1 in it i wont play with that anymore lol thx

Semi Bricked/Bricked Phone Needs Fixing

Hi Guys -
First time android user and attempted rooting using the odin method. I followed the instruction listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311194 to the "T" before starting. I was doing alright until after flashing the recovery-cwm-hercules.tar, then it gets weird. It didn't flash to recovery but just rebooted to the main screen (where I could see the background picture with the locker pattern), then it immediately shuts off and the cycle begins again.
The weird thing is that I can't even access recovery mode (hold vol. up+down+power), because I'll see the Clockworkmod logo then it flickers and reboot itself. This happens every time I attempted recovery mode.
My attempts to fix it:
1. I flashed the recovery, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1315390, to see if it makes any difference. The same story happens with loading to main screen w/locker then it reboots itself again and again. Sometimes I'll be lucky to input the pattern but before soon it will reboot itself again. Same thing with recovery mode as described above.
2. Flashing the stock kernel provided by http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1311229 to see if it does anything. Nope, same story for both recovery mode/home screen.
3. The insecure kernel, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1320946. Same story. nope, nope.
4. Tried these in all order and permutation. Nada.
5. Tried it both ways using samsung driver/kies.
6. Tried it both ways with/without SIM card.
7. Battery is fully charged when attempting any flashing.
8. All the above in my second computer to no avail.
I'm sorry if this might come across as long winded but I just want you guys to get the full picture. I would really appreciate it if you guys could offer any solutions or advice on how to correct this problem. Please be gentle with this first time android user haha, thanks in advance man.
Manually boot into recovery (vol up/down keys) and make a backup (be sure to do this). Then try wipe data/factory reset through recovery. Sounds like a ROM issue not a hardware issue
First off, thanks roman for the quick reply. That's the thing I can't get to recovery manually with the button combinations. When I do that it gives me this message:
[Picture]White dropbox/mail box with a yellow arrow pointing to the Android
"Verifying internal mmc block
Checksum confirmation check (0)
No need checksum confirmation already exceuted
#manual mode#"
It would then reboot and goes to the screen with the locker then immediately repeats that cycle. It doesn't have any wipe options/restart now/etc.
No way to power it down except with battery removal. I've attempted what you suggested many times too to no avail.

Ok, so if it actually boots into the ROM but reboots, try rebooting to recovery from adb -- "adb reboot recovery"
think it's a no go . i tried using adb recovery method and the same thing would occur, it would restart and seems to load into recovery mode but then I would only see the logo, then it flickers and restart itself.
then the vicious cycle of loading up to the screen-locker and restarting itself begins. guess this is the smartphone version of being friend-zoned.
Have you tried taking battery out then back in and while holding volume up/down plug it back into computer? That has never failed to get me into d/l mode. Man I hope you get it working.
Yeah I tried that and getting to download mode is not the problem. just that recovery mode doesn't boot properly in that it would restarts itself. and when i boot normally to screen, i would see the locker and background picture then within 3 secs, it would restart itself.
Guess last resort is to go to t-mobile store, play dumb, and get samsung on it. only problem is that i worry about the flash rom counter # since mine is like 10 already (my attempts to address this problem). Let's hope those tmobile reps aren't that tech savvy.
Thanks for all the help fellas, great early posting experiences so far.
I'm sorry I've read your post..and i'm confuse, if you're able to go into download mode, then why could you just start Odin and flash the recovery again. I understand that but that's the a big problem. If I could go to CW it would be a different story but I can't go into CW recovery. I would be able to see the logo CWR and the version number then immediately it shuts off again and reboot. Happens every time without fail.

did you let go of holding the vol+ & vol- buttons as soon as you see the blue text in CWR ?
it can easily reboot by accident when holding those buttons and hitting power, but the buttons are so responsive it selected the first option to reboot the phone by accident a couple of times on me
I'm positive that I held it properly and long enough. I never got to the blue text, just the CWR logo showing then turns off (like you shutting off a tv) and reboots itself. Trying to flash it again with Odin didn't work either and I tried the recoveries from different sources as well.
I went to the Tmobile store today and seems like they'll mail me a replacement then I'll return my current one to them. Only thing is stocking/processing fee but it's a small price to pay if it resolves everything.
glad they will give you another one..
Dude if you can get into download mode then it can most likely be fixed by flashing stock through odin. This would save you some $$. Just saying.

Dude, I understand that it should but it's not. I've flashed the stock recovery for more than 10 times and I still can't past the home screen. It would just reboot itself in less than 3 sec. And I'm positive I flashed it properly. Believe me I don't want to spend extra money if I don't have too.

[Q] Oh God :/ Please help. My phone turned to... NOTHINGNESS.

Yeah hey,
So I was running Trinity kernel and noticed a lot of random system freezes and so I reverted back to stock kernel through this thread I just made. I flashed the 4.1.1 stock kernel zip over the trinity kernel.
My phone got stuck in Boot Screen (Didn't see a boot loop, just stuck there while the Animation plays for infinite time) I took the battery out, then rebooted... same thing.. So I was gonna wipe and reinstall the whole thing through recovery (CWM), I pulled the battery, held Power + Vol down.. I was expecting recovery, but then I saw a Fastboot screen ("Odin Mode" as labelled in the top left corner) with only one single option ("START") and a label that says "Downloading..."Then system info ("Tuna" and the other stuff)
Now MY MAIN QUESTION:
Did I lose my CWM recovery system restore zip?? The one in the virtual "SD" Card?! PLEASE SAY I DIDN'T!!!
Now second question, how do I get things back to normal?? :crying:
Vol up + vol down + power :highfive:

I think the battery was 11% when it all started so I'll give it 30 minute and try again. And update this accordingly.
If you were referring to your clockworkmod folder in the first post, would be wise to pull it via adb in case you have to completely wipe your phone.

Could you please guide me to somewhere where this method is explained? I really want to pull that file any way possible.
I'm not the best in using adb..
But I'm now about to install Win7 or Linux to be able to use adb.
This is probably the easiest to follow initially: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1058431
If in doubt there are dozens of other adb guides/tutorials on XDA and elsewhere. Just take your time.

Thank you for the help. Recovery just worked and my restore file is still there.. So I'll try reflashing and if it failed I'll wipe and reflash.
I can manage on my own when recovery in intact.
Thank you -and people like you- for making this forum such an amazing place.
