intriguing... - Windows Phone 7 General

One of my favorite things about wp7 has been that unlike android I haven't had to reset my device 5 times a day minimum. Since putting the beta mango on with a registered dev account 2 days ago I have had to reset my device twice and for some reason the lock screen has frozen to where it will only slide up about 1/3 of the way on 3 occasions. Im aware that it is a beta and I know Microsoft will resolve these issues but having that as my daily driver is reminiscent of darker times when android seemed like a more valid choice of phone. I am looking forward to the real mango and certainly would not stray from the clear winner in terms of everything a mobile os has to offer but I can't say that it isn't bothersome. Anyway, just a random observation.

I'm not having any problems with Mango on my Omnia 7. It doesn't even feel like it's beta.

I've had occasional lockups, freezes, random reboots or apps that refuse to start before I applied the pre_mango release on my HD7. Gotta say that these issues were pretty rare and started showing up when I replaced the 8 GB sd card with a 32 GB one. So it's most definitely related to this alteration. With the mango beta now all these issues increased dramatically. Especially the random reboots. But I don't blame the update, I still think it's related to the sd card. And we're still talking about a beta here. Considering the fact that WP7 had less bugs then any other OS I used so far from the very beginning, I'm convinced the final release will be as stable as NoDo used to be.

I have an OMNIA 7, and I had some issues in the first Mango update. I believe it has to do with the apps and tweaks I had installed before the upgrade since some of them are totally incompatible.
I had terrible battery consumption too. I then thought to take the time reset the phone and revert back from scratch and see if it’s Mango or the previous installation causing the issues. Guess what, the Mango runs super smooth, the battery is excellent better than before and it does not feel like beta. The major thing for me is that all apps with live tiles work excellent.

it's beta, it doesn't matter if it's from redmond, open source geniuses, or the moon, it's going to **** up now and again.
don't like cockups ? don't run betas. if you're not a developer, its pretty much pointless to run developer releases and/or apps.
the whole point of closed source wp7 and strict hardware/ software restrictions, drm, and everything locked down was supposed to be so things were smooth for the end user.

Yeah, this thread is pretty ridiculous... I mean, you're running pre-release software, expecting it to be ready for daily use... And then saying you feel like using another OS because of it? Um... Alright.

Good to know that the last 2 people didn't even bother to read. I clearly stated over and over that id never move back to a lesser os and that i am in fact a registered dev.

I did read, thank you for assuming incorrectly, and you cleary said "it reminds you of darker times blah blah" which I simply said is ridiculous to say about a pre-release build. Developer or not, this is an incomplete, unreliable pre-release build. It's going to have bugs, and honestly, at this stage, it is STILL less buggy than any Android handset. I wasn't attacking you, simply saying your statement is ridiculous at this point... It isn't even a RC, and I know for developers it is tough to balance between an adequate daily handset, and just a dev handset, but you, being a developer, should realize that the darker days line may be a little misleading due to the stage of development, that's all...

I'm beginning to think that is what makes people like Android so much, it forces you to tinker with the phone to get it to work right. It tricks you into believing that the OS is so awesome because it's open and you can fix all the problems yourself. Seriously, it gets old after a while and I just want a f*cking phone that works.

Android is pretty much the new Windows Mobile.

You're complaining about beta code issues?
Com'on man... it's beta code!
Regardless, I have had some minor issues but have only had to reboot with some music playback issues.... outside that and some little hiccups here and there it's great.

I am not really complaining, just saying that I now don't understand how I put up with this crap constantly with android. Hell, I thought android was great and I was doing this type of thing nonstop with the latest and greatest versions which were often just a pallet swap of the last version. It is reminescent of darker days but I'm looking forward with excitement. It's beta and it beats out any other OS. It just made me realize how little I miss android and all of it's "features."

Is there a new official ROM comming up?

Hi all,
I have a question, does anyone know if there will be a new official rom for the TP2? The last ROM update, as we all know, had the SOD problem and it would be nice of HTC to patch that up with a new ROM.
Or HTC maybe declared WM6.5 dead and already moved on to WP7.
Maybe someone knows

As in no longer in production. AT$T is the only carrier still offering it and replacements through Asurion are refurbished units, not new. Development is pretty much over as it has reached its end of life.

Yeah, but don't expect any more ROM upgrades from HTC. They've moved on.
Wouldn't be so sure. They just released a rom update for Leo, a fix for corrupted microphone in speakerphone mode for Rhodium and People application update for Rhodium too.
Those were to fix issues that needed fixing. There is nothing on our phones that doesn't work properly with the stock ROM. This last AT$T ROM update was an enhancement (Sense 2.5) and will probably be the last official Rhodium ROM to come from HTC. We might see a hotfix or two, but not another complete ROM update.
What about SoD and performance problems?
Also some users are reporting problems with droped calls. We just need HTC's attention.
Those aren't necessarily ROM issues. I've had a total of one unexplained SOD in the first month I owned the phone. The rest have been related to my overclocking it. Dropped calls are more a carrier issue, not a device issue. My Tilt 2 runs great on WinMo 6.5 and TF3D 2.1. That's why I skipped the latest update to Sense 2.5, which seems to have caused more problems than it fixed. No company keeps fixing problem in perpetuity. This phone is already 18 months old, which is ancient in terms of cell phones, and most are near or beyond the end of their factory warranty period. Unless there is still a problem that affects all or a large percentage of users and isn't related to user mods, don't expect HTC to throw any more of their resources at trying to fix it. They would much rather concentrate on newer phones that are still in the retail channel. Now that M$ is done with WinMo 6.5, there isn't much incentive for HTC to waste any more time with it. That's just the ugly truth.
SoD and performance are rom problems for sure.
Dropped calls is a radio rom issue for me, because if you use another phone with this same sim card the problem disappears (in this same area). However this might be a hardware antenna problem.
Dude, why do you keep arguing with me? Unless everyone or a large majority of users are having the exact same issue, it isn't a ROM problem. The SODs could very well be a hardware and/or a software issue, but it is still not one that everyone is suffering from. Almost every PC running Windows has had a freeze at one time or another, you think M$ is going to continue trying to fix every version of Windows it's ever made? A phone that drops calls easier than another isn't necessarily defective, either. When I had my RAZR V3 I hardly ever dropped calls. When I moved to a Smartphone I started dropping calls like crazy. Put simply, the Smartphone was less powerful because of the space needed for so many other components that the radio section suffered. Places I easily got 4-5 bars on my RAZR I now get 2-3 bars on my Tilt 2. Can't be helped other than by HTC coming out with another model with a better radio. They aren't going to improve the TP2/Tilt 2 to make it better. They're done with it.

Any arguments for that? Their last update was on 12-th November, not even a month ago (for other countries even later).
Whatever, man. I never told you to shut up, I just don't see why you have such a hard time accepting the truth. I pointed out the reality that once a product has reached its end-of-life and is no longer being manufactured, much, if not all, development comes to a halt. This is true of almost any consumer electronic item you can think of. The Tilt2 had a total of one updated ROM released by HTC for it recently and a couple of hotfixes back in February and a couple after the release of this latest ROM. I would bet money that is the last we'll see from HTC on this phone. There are just too many other newer phones they need to concentrate on and support instead of a nearly 2 year old model. For the most part, the carriers would have to be bugging them for an update and most of them are more interested in selling you a new phone to replace it and extending your plan another 2 years. I've been around the retail electronics business (family store) for over 30 years and that's just the way it works, only today, with such short product cycles, it is even worse. You have a much better shot at some developer on XDA fixing these issues, but even many of them haved moved on to other phones. Life goes on.
And not to make you feel bad, but I have had very few issues with my Tilt2 and most were caused by something *I* did, not the phone or the software. I hate to say it, but I think a lot of the SODs and performance issues are related to poor quality control and user error and tweaking, not the phone or software itself. And then there's just some things in WinMo that have been ongoing issues for years. trust me, I know. I've been a WinMo user since 2003 and I'm amazed at some of the things I see still causing problems.

1) I had just one issue, it's already fixed by HTC. No more issues at all
2) Poor quality control? Software just should be prepared for all situation. For all those years I have been a developer, I never called an user action stupid or poor. I always tried to predict all situations. That's how software should work.
3) WinMo user since 2003 - glad to read your references... Shall I show mine?
I agree with this opinion, WM never was even close to perfection. From the other side, it always was a step ahead in customization and features.

I always tried to predict all situations. That's how software should work. You're living in a fantasy world. I'm glad that you have that attitude towards the code YOU write, but M$ has never thought that way. Not with Windows 3.0 (what I started on) and not on Windows7, which still suffers from niggling issues carried forward from several versions back. Despite there still being a large XP user base, do you think they are still putting much effort into fixing its problems? They did, it's called Windows Vista, which Windows 7 was created to fix after that. What I meant about stupid user action is the many things we do ourselves that break our phones. I mean, we're on XDA because we aren't satisfied, right? So we mod and fix and customize and sometimes mess things up. How many times have you installed a cab or regedit and reboot with your fingers crossed?

Much of the problem with our phones is that they were compromised from the start. The hardware, while cutting edge at introduction, wasn't really designed for the things that our mods and updated ROMs are trying to do on it. A TP2 running WinMo 6.1 is actually a pretty fast, reliable machine. Then AT$T decided that to compete they wanted their version to run WinMo 6.5 with TF3D. Still, not so bad, performance remained acceptable. Then they put Sense 2.5 on it and the shortcoming and issues multiplied ad infinitum. The phone itself didn't change, but in trying to keep up with the iPhoneses we asked more and more of it and, well, it wasn't quite up to the task. At least not for real power users, anyway. That being the case, do you think HTC will keep trying to squeeze more performance out of a discontinued device just to make a small cadre of XDA and PPCGeeks users happy with their totally underpowered, by comparison to what's available today, TP2s and Tilt 2s? Not likely. I'm just a pragmatist that way. I love my Tilt 2 and it does all I want right now. I'm eligible for an upgrade already, but I'm in no hurry. If something really worthy comes along or the Tilt 2 no longer meets my needs, I'm gone. I just hope that it offers me near or better the same level of personalization that my Tilt 2 does. From what I've seen of XDAndroid, I'm happy to wait awhile longer. Good talking to you and although I don't use one of your ROMs, I appreciate that you're here and have been helping the community all these years.
Hehe, I think that anything has been said here already
Just to clarify - I do not run into troubles, because I'm creating my own roms - something that in my opinion works like it should right out of the factory. I demand HTC to fix performance/sod/radio issues in their latest stock S2 rom.
It's a flagship, business and high-end device. How the **** did they released such a trashy ROM for it?
About the MS Vista example, MS still does publish fixes and updated software for it. Hah, even XP is still supported. "In an unprecedented move, Microsoft has committed to providing support services for its soon to be retired Windows XP through 2014 -- a full 13 years after the operating system was originally released."@InformationWeek
Why doesn't HTC act same? TP2 is still a very popular device.

Simple answer for both questions is, because HTC doesn't make the base software their devices run on. They are saddled with the problems they inherit from Microsoft. They would be wasting time and money to try and fix the things in WinMo that don't work right, which is why so many manufacturers and developers are abandoning the platform. Years of trying to work with M$ and still too many disgruntled customers to show for it. WinPho7 is a perfect example. How can you come to market with a new OS that doesn't support something as simple as cut-and-paste, a feature the previous OS has had for years? It seems like a small thing, but it just shows how M$ is constantly missing the mark on functionality and user experience. And why something like Android was able to garner so much market share in such a short period of time.

I completely agree with you... I'm tired of using tp2 with the problems that it has...
I mean, before ending with HTC tP2, they must make a final ROM version of content which all fixed and upgrades for HTC's faith real customers.
It's not everyone who wants to use WP7... I do not know about you but I will never buy a mobile with WP7 or iPhone...
I'm also having SOD about every day.
Started after the upgrade from WM6.5 to WM6.5.5
So I downgraded to WM6.5 again, but the problems stayed.
I don't have changed anything on the ROM, and I'm using the official ROM's of HTC.
I even ran a week with WM6.5 out of the box, and the problems still occurred.
So blaiming the users is quite short sighted...
And after complaining for 6-9months at HTC, I gave it up.
PS:
I don't think the TP2 is out of live over here (the Netherlands), or it's just stock they are emptying.
It's fully available in many stores, and online.

Yeah despite this being old, this is a big indication we could see the update between tomorrow and next week. I'm sure Microsoft wants to get the update out before or during MWC so they have something worthwhile to present there.
Also, I'm expecting details of that second update at the MIX 11 developers conference this year. After all, MS introduced WP7 at MWC and then went into more detail when MIX came around.
Perhaps 7th Feb
Ive read that the update will be out on the 7th Feb.
I wouldn't count on Feb. 7 date, it may happen but don't get your hopes up. This rumour reminds me of the MS CES tablet stuff that never really happened. The original blog that reported Feb. 7 didn't provide any proof did they?

Can I ask a possibly dumb question? Why is everyone so pumped for an update?
It's just, I know it'll speed up apps loading, and add copy+paste, etc. But I mean, even without it, wp7 is such a smooth OS, I just don't know what the rush is in hoping for an "OMG UPDATEZZ!!!1!111". It's not like wp7 is broken right now, and only an update will make it useable. And honestly I've only needed to use copy/paste once, and even then it wasn't a big deal...
I suspect everyone will be quite disappointed by the update...

I suspect that none of the features/fixes in the update, by themselves or taken as a whole, will be a "big deal". For many of us, this is a test of Microsofts credibility and support for this OS. The real question is, are they going to become responsive to their user base and make serious attempts to keep current with their competition? Most of us are waiting to see how often they release updates and whether the contents of those updates are valuable to their user base. We won't know that for a few updates I am sure.

The real signal that the update is coming soon is when the Zune and Mac clients are updated to make backups. That's what I'm most looking forward to. Up until now there's no way to back up text messages, files, or app data and I have a lot of stuff on my phone I'd like to protect.
I use the Samsung Focus. I've never had any Market place issues with freeze ups, Ive certainly never had a random hard reset. I've only wished hard, around 4 times since 11/8/10 that I could copy and paste. I also haven't been able to view 90% of the embedded videos on the web sites Ive visited (Flash?). I want an update.. like 3 weeks ago like the big boys at MS said I would. I want to have enough faith in MS that come next upgrade I feel excited to update my hardware not my OS.

Nothing wrong with the country, but I've seen several references to how outsourcing to low-cost countries really doesn't lower the development cost...Here in Norway, it seems most of the outsourced projects gets scrapped because they never finish. Might be because it's hard to delegate to people almost on the other side of the world, might be differences in cultures etc etc.
I don't put too much trust in outsourcing at all...unless the management actually spend time with the team.

To WP7, or not to WP7

Hello fellow XDA members,
Currently residing on Android, I'm thinking about making the switch to WP7 using a HTC 7 Trophy. http://www.htc.com/www/product/7trophy/overview.html
I would like to know the pro's and cons about wether to make the switch. I'm basically tired of Android and rather not have an iPhone.
Thank you for your time.
Jorijn.
I highly suggest you get some hands on experience w/ the OS rather than asking for Pro's & Con. It is something you need to experience for yourself. See if your carrier could let you demo one.

I could drive up to a store which sells these HTC phones with WP7, this however gives a quick impression rather than experiences from (power-)users. Thank you for your help though.
I made the switch a month or so ago. I have loved it. I had one of the Samsung Galaxy S phones and got a Samsung Focus from a buddy of mine. I love it. I was swapping sim cards for a while not sure of which I liked better but after about a week of that, I just left it in the WP7 cause I like it much more. It's mainly just more cohesive. I'm just sick of tinkering with the Android and having constant lag no matter what. I have begun using my Android as a media player for car trips, etc simply because it's easier to get movies on it. Music etc is much better on the WP7 from organization to sounds quality. Just get a little hands on time with it. It's still a work in progress but I have been using it great joy and looking forward to future updates. With Android I NEEDED the updates hoping they would fix some killer flaw (like the GPS not ever working).
Here's my take as a power user on iOS, WM6.5, WP7, and Android:
Here are the draw-backs of WP7 as compared to Android and iOS.
1) no 3rd party multitasking till a year or so when the Mango update comes out
2) not as many (or enough IMO) apps/games
3) The facebook app sucks royally as it's laggy and has a terrible UI (again, just my opinion, not really important if you're not a facebook junkie)
4) You can't change the UI much at all right now or for the foreseeable future.
5) Various bugs on certain phones such as camera shutter sound, random reboots, market download failures, etc...
Now, having said that the NoDo update apparently fixes things like number 5 to some extent. The UI really is fun and sleek. The app store is building up every day and developers seem to like WP7 except the lack of APIs at times. It's a new experience which quickly grows on you and if you are tired of Android this really is a nice alternative. It is still at a growing infant stage but for a new OS release it's actually pretty damn impressive. The built in facebook integration is really cool if you're into that, and I really do like the Live Tiles, although I really wish I could modify the UI more.
Apps run smoothly for the most part, although not as smooth as iOS, but still really great. Xbox live games are getting better and better and
I'll admit that I've come off as a WP7 hater at times, but I guess it's more my annoyance at some people claiming it's the best thing since sliced bacon and some of the lack of features of WP7 personally I can't get around. But as long as you go into it knowing what it can and can't do it's honestly not a bad buy and I think you'll enjoy the experience, just know that it does have some limitations.
iOS is pretty cool because you can theme it in a million ways and the apps support and smoothness overall, as well as things like multitasking and being able to put your apps in folders (I hope MS implements that at some point, I hate having my apps just floating in the right menu).
Android is cool but you already know what it can and can't do and seem to be tired of it.
WP7 is a great experience, I guess I am just too impatient for a fully featured OS which is a pretty unrealistic hope when the OS just came out.
edit:
almost forgot, Netflix streaming is a HUGE plus on WP7 over Android.
WP7 works really well on my omnia 7. its fast as hell, its beautiful, no laggs, no obvious bugs but. too much restrictings, its just totally unflexible.
after 2 weeks i sold my omnia 7 and went back to my 2years old nokia 5800.
My suggestion would be to wait a year, minimum, before jumping to a WP7 device. MS is screwing all early adopters by not holding to their statement that updates will be done by them and not the carriers. There has yet to be one single update for the majority of WP7 devices, and updates were expected months ago.
WP7 is buggy with system freezes requiring reboots, market freezes requiring reboots, dead volume issues and so forth. I highly recommend staying with Android for the time being or going to an iPhone. Maybe in a years time, once MS has shown its nature, then consider a WP7 device.
WP7 devices are great right up front and in the beginning of ownership. But they become very displeasing as time goes by.

Very well said, and the fact that you own an HD7, an HD2, and an iPhone4 means you at least have some great comparisons and experience enough with different devices to opine intelligently on it.
I think when you get an opinion from someone who owns/owned WP7/Android/iOS/WM6.5 (i too have all of these) you can get a fuller picture. WP7 was freaking AWESOME the first couple of weeks I had it but the limitations do manifest themselves. In a couple of years I think it will be very polished and great to own, but you just want to do some serious research before you drop funds on a phone you may seriously regret, that's all.
I used WP7 for about 3 days on my HD2 before flashing back to my 6.5/android combination.
I have to say that I loved the wp7 experience and the main reasons I flashed back to 6.5 were because I wasn't able to use WP7 on a native device.
I'm still undecided about where I'm going to go with my upgrade in a months time, WP7 or android.
That said, the points already raised about it still being rough around the edges are very true.
But hey, you could always sell it and buy an android device if you didn't like it....
Sent from my fingers to your face...
I bought a Focus the same week it was released, brought it back 2 weeks later. I love WP7, but I will be waiting until at least Mango update. Maybe the new Nokia devices will be what I want.
Basically, it felt more restricted than iphone. I want a in-between of Android and iPhone, not an iPhone clone. I can't use custom ringtones, I can't use flash, I can't customize the homescreen the way I want, free apps are horrible (but paid apps are really good), battery life seems worse than android, and a few other issues I had.
Other than that though, I really liked it and I'm hoping MS can fix everything.
I have and really like hd7 and wp7
but as far as I'm concerned MS
is out of step with other OS
watch new devices HTC Evo 3D, LG Dual Optimus and Optimus 3D Android
I think we will see something similar with WP7 in 2012 .... and I did not want to wait
I personally don't feel the same as others seem to about personalization.
For me this is the most personal device I've ever had. Sure I can't change the background but to me thats a moot point when I can change nearly everything else. First off the lock screen is definitively "mine" but even once you're past that it is my xbox avatar, my friends, my pictures, and any icons that I've made (you can get apps that do it but when I do it I just use the built in option of pinning a webpage to the homescreen). I'm able to go one step further in that I "hacked" mine and get the custom color options for tiles. Though honestly even before I did that I think the basic color option gave it a fair sense on "individuality." Plus again with the homebrew you get custom ringtones.
Out of all of the options out there (and I've used them all except for webOS) WP7 has been by far my favorite.
Depends on what kind of user you are. I have used the Blackberry, Android and WP7.
Blackberry: Functional, solid apps but underpowered and slow device. Could not see myself using it for more than 6months.
Android: Hate hate hate the context menu button. Everything takes 4-5 button clicks to access, email on android is horrible unless your only account is a gmail one. Very good apps and app store, and extremely customizable
WP7: Almost instant access to everything. Flip the lock screen and I can tell how many emails I have, what meetings are coming up, any missed calls or text messages. The commercials don't lie about how easy and quick it is to get the information you need and move on with your life.
For me the WP7 is exactly what I wanted from a smartphone. I'm don't stare at my phone a lot but when I do whatever info is needed should be fast and to the point.
If you like to configure your phone or treat it like a football team to the envy of your friends then stay away from it

I own an HD2, Vibrant, and HD7 and I've been saying the same thing since I started posting in these threads.
For the first 2-3 weeks, the phone is awesome. The user experience is fresh/new and you don't really notice the deficiencies.
When "playtime is over" and you need to actually get work done, this phone OS falls flat on its face.
I'll probably be SIM Swapping my unlimited data plan back to my Vibrant in the next week. The only thing I'll miss from the HD7 is Board Express, the Huge Screen, and the Roomy soft keyboard that makes both Swipe and the Samsung keyboard feel like it's on a 3" screen (can hardly type on them after using the WP7 keyboard so much).

You're assuming someone wants to buy it. Not many people want to buy WP7 devices.
I get 10x the amount of offers for my HD2, and 5x for my Vibrant that people trying to sell WP7 devices get for their phone. The interest is just so low. When you buy this phone, you have to make up your mind that it's what you want FAST so that you can return it in the carrier return window. They are hard as hell to sell.
Thank you for these extended opinions. I decided not to make the switch. Microsoft seems to have a rather unpleasant image on phone updates. WP7 doesn't have advanced navigation features like Android does at the moment.
WP7 seems to be a wonderful experience to have for a few days. After that it'll probably get old and boring and I'll guess I'll probably start seeing the negative points on this all.
I suggest stay on android or either go to ios. Wait for 2012 and nokia's wp7 releases. Wp7 is still too premature for hardcore users. Too many restrictions and drawbacks.

Thats not strictly true. Speaking from personal experience I've sold Omnia 7s, Mozarts and HD7s without problems. It wasn't difficult at all.

I think you've made a wise choice for now. let's see how it does after Mango.

Fed up with WP7?

Is anyone else getting a bit fed up (to put it politely) with windows phone 7?
I really love the OS, but this whole fiasco with the 2 updates is kinda putting me off! Not sure why i cant update like has been documented elsewhere on the forum.
I can't unlock it, i cant get the update, its starting to annoy me a lot. All i want is the simple copy and paste function of the phone, nothing special! I do not know why Microsoft did not just add these features before they even released the OS!?!?
Try this, you may like it.
http://blog.walshie.me/2011/04/04/so-who-wants-windows-phone-updates-like-right-now/
if you're having problems unlocking your device, you should really hit the chevron thread. But for the most part, any issues with the unlock process on my end have been fixed.
As far as updating, you should check a few areas that have a nice update step for everyone and it works for anyone whose tried so far.
Then there is the option of actually waiting for your specific device to update via carrier.
It gets tiring to see the I'm tired of windows phone because it hasn't updated even though you like the experience...it's the first update...the very first one at that. Take a look at android updating, or even the god awful windows mobile updating

First update errors were caused by Samsung not MS.
Second update is being held up by the carriers.
I have an unlocked/unbranded samsung omnia 7 and haven't gotten the update, but I don't care because it is only a minor update and I know it is coming. Be patient bro.

I can sort of understand the whole update irritation around here. Honestly a lot of users truly do care about a massive wave of updates... I'm not one of those fortunately... But with that being said, are people really this ignorant? I could argue that a million Android or iPhone features are basic and should have been coded before the release of the OS... Nothing is EVER feature complete. People have different views, different ideas, and therefore different features take precedent over others... You can't expect the OS to be released with every feature you consider 'simple' or 'basic' because nothing would ever get released in this world...

I have to disagree with you on this. Both Android and iOS got grief regarding simple features. MS should have learnt from their mistakes, as WP7 was release years after these 2.
Any way i am now running Mango, and i have to say this is a Massive leap forward for the OS. If i had not have invested so much into iOS i would move over and just use WP7!
As for my previous post, i was venting my frustration. Which i think i am allowed to do and have an opinion. Granted the update only brought copy and paste and a few other minor features but these are massive features. Especially when using the device as a business device.

You're wrong and being disingenuous.
The OS (even Mango) is missing basic functionality that is delivered by any decent feature phone, and even some dumbphones. This same functionality can be had on any cheap Blackbery or Android handset.
Also, the updates are too slow. Microsoft should use a faster feature update policy especially since the OS is young. Once they patch the basic functionality holes, then they can try (but fail) at using their Windows Service Pack-type update iterations.
The OS has a high satisfaction rate because most of the people who are using it are fervent Microsoft supporters (most, not all) and this is quite evident form reading various blogs and especially various forums.
Most consumers don't even need a rep to tell them something else is better.
All they need to do is play with the phone and they will easily see that the feature parity between WP7 and even a feature phone is a bit startling and they will probably opt for a cheap Android phone or iPhone 3GS instead.
It's simpy how things are right now.
Hopefully they speed it up after Mango and focus on the BASICs, cause that is what's causing people to look at other platforms right now.
My mom wanted to get my niece a Focus (cause she liked my HD7) and she didn't want it cause she can't MMS decently on it (she texts/MMSes a lot) and there is no IM client. She got an Inspire 4G instead... However, this same person had no problems accepting my HD2 as a gift over the new phone, but I didn't give it cause my mom didn't want to pay more by using 2 different carriers and no family plan.
Yes, it made me a bit sadfaced (especially given how the overall aesthetics of WP7 is superior to Android, and females tend to weight that a bit higher than men TBQH), but you cannot even begin to argue with such a decision seeing as how even Mango will fail to begin to address some of these functionality gaps. She was migrating over from a Feature Phone, btw.
It was the perfect case of "I don't care how it looks, I care what it can do." as far as I'm concerned.
But of course I'm sure you will think this was only an outlier situation

may I ask what these basic features are that mango is supposedly missing? because I have the beta and I feel that all loose ends are tied now.
Here's my 2 cents. I have owned a Hero, Epic and now the Evo. I have spent countless hours trying out the best combinations for ROMs and Kernels, and I am pretty fed up with it.
Just last night, I spent 3 HOURS manually updating my girlfriends Epic to EC05 (2.2), simply because the POS wouldn't download and install. And at least Microsoft is including new features, not new apps that take up enough space as it is.
As far as I'm concerned, WP7 is a great OS, and I am sooooooo beyond dealing with this development crap it makes me irritated every time I do it.
With all that being said, I plan on switching to WP7 as soon as Mango hits Sprint with some new phones. You guys that own the WP7 phones are lucky. It is not worth the time or hassel to mess with Android, you will run into problems and I GUARANTEE YOU WILL GET P****D.
Hope I helped.

That's the main reason I won't root my HTC Inspire 4G and customize it. I've been there with my HD2 and know where it leads. My Inspire currently is like a pristine, un-trampled, wilderness in all of its glory. It works perfectly and smoothly and causes me no troubles. The moment I were to root it, it would cease being the pristine glory it is because it would continually get altered and messed with instead of just using it for what it is.
I've been there with my HD2 and know how customizing works. This is one of the main reasons behind the locked nature of the iPhone. Apple would rather have people using the iPhone for what it is than continually altering it and potentially getting no satisfaction from it. MS apparently understands this as well. WP7 is just as locked as iOS and they really need to stick to their guns. There are those who want the choice to customize and that's fine. Android provides all they want. But some of them want every system to be made for them and only their way. They seem to not be able to cope with any system not being setup to their standards, regardless of how selfish they are being. They want it all and don't mind others not having any.

Can you email or MMS video from Mango?

Last time I checked most people were using NoDo, and that's what people going into store experience when they play with the phones...

Either you have a Feature Phone from the late 90s, or you're lying through your teeth.
Even dumb phones can MMS video these days if they have a camera (not all, but some - they're only dumbphones). Practically every feature phone with a camera can MMS videos.
To your first part of the post (not quoted): Free on Contract blackberries and cheap iPhone 3GSes can do all this, and more. That's not even comparing current WP7 OS/Devices to Android and iOS devices that were released in the same timeframe.
I'm not going to get baited into another heated forum battle, so... last response to you
If your only retort is "who does <something," then you've already defeated your own argument. A majority of cell phone users are on Feature and Dumb Phones. Millions and millions of people utilize the video MMS feature on those phones. And feature phones have email clients as well (some having somewhat decent HTML support, even).

And how is your grandmother who has a feature phone going to view that facebook video from her phone when she's at the flea market lookign for deals? Everyone wants their kids on Facebook. Yea. Lol... More people share on YouTube than Facebook. You can make YouTube Videos Privates. But more cell phone users are on Feature Phones and if you want to share short video clips with people on dumb or feature phones you cannot depend on either Facebook or YouTube. That is the issue. The issue is not what you can do on your phone, or wha tyou prefer. The issue is the OS being designed in a way that limits communications with people who have not yet migrated to smartphone platforms... Do you understand it NOW?
Again, if your only retort is "I found the quality lacking," then you've defeated your own argument.
Tethering?
Mobile Hotspot?
What about better Exchange Policy support so Exchange Servers stop declining lots of WP7 devices from connecting to networks that iPhones and Symbian devices have no issues connecting to?
File System Support so we can use a File Manager and manage files on the phone? And more easily/faster bulk copy media of dispirate/varied types to the device?
Outlook Synching from Zune Client, and Documents? For those of us who do not have SharePoint/Exchange but don't want to put confidential contact information/documents in the cloud? For those who don't know... Windows Live (Hotmail - which shares the same base login for Live) has a bad history when it comes to Account hacking/hijacking.
A notification tray so that you can see what you got while you were asleep or your phone was silenced/put away (I'm talking beyond the Social notifications pane, which only covers stuff you can already see in the Facebook/Twitter app, etc.) without hopping into several applications? (swipe left from Home, App List. Swipe Right, Notification Cache).
Does the Video Camera settings save in Mango, at least?
Only loosely related, but it would be nice if they allowed us to suscribe more than one RSS feed in Windows Live...
DLNA support at the platform level, not just from specific phone models/OEMs? Every decent Android device has this, and the iPhone has AirPlay.
Turn by Turn is still pretty bad in Mango, and I think I've already mentioned it but I still can't get over the insane feature drop-off from WM to WP7 IRT Bing Maps... It's still borderline unbelievable to me...
Universal Search?
Has Codec support been expanded? If you email someone a WMV and their phone doesn't support that CODEC, well, too bad?
I can continue

You can't possibly be serious. Using the capabilities of a beta, that is not even close to feature complete, as proof that the finished release of the update won't include MMS video? That just boggles the mind.

How so? I thought this thread was about WP7 users being "fed up" with the OS. Given that, it seems more to me like telling people who own a PC, but aren't very happy with Win7, to have patience because a new version of the OS is coming. That may or may not be good advice, but it is a more correct analogy.

I agree with you 110%. Android is open source and all about customizations, if you choose to do so. I know the GSII is coming to Sprint in August, but I'm not sure if I can hold back with all the power that device has. It runs quite well and the most I would do is underclock the phone to conserve my battery. I have fully customized my Evo, but I cannot sync my emails, my data has to be turned off, and I need a task killer all the time or my battery dies really quick.
With WP7, you don't need to worry about those features, and you get free applications *cough*. I mean, I hate having to go through all of the troubles to get these things to work properly, but I love the variety that I have.
WP7 runs sooo smooth and there is over 500 features being applied in Mango, and I really want simplicity and that beautiful UI.
What do you think is more important?

Went from IOS to Android, is WP7 matured yet?

So when I first got the GSII I thought it was awesome! But 2 things quickly came to fruition.
1.The lightness was great at first but now its almost as a hassle for me, its TOO light, its like I cant even grab it properly like I did with my IP4, im constantly having trouble handling it and it just feels SO delicate! As if its gonna break if I do something wrong or drop it, its too thin for me, that's why Im having trouble holding it at times.
2.Android I have used before and very much enjoyed it but I dunno what happened to me that now its just too much stuff going on for me, with the IP4, it was simple and right to the point, in a way I appreciate all the extra little things that Android bring but I just dont care too much either, surprising cause im a techie. I dunno if its cause I am used to the IP for so long but it just seems like I have to go through more steps to do things that I would only have to do 1 or 2 on IOS. I always get this feeling of cluttered and an unorganized feel on Android while on IOS it just feels simple and straight to the point and organised. I tried WP7 at launch as well and I was super impressed by its UI, smoothness, how everything was so simple and easy to get to/use, frankly I just dont care about customizing and all that, I just want a quick fast and easy experience.
Now dont get me wrong a big problem I had with Android was how it would lag, freeze and sometimes feel like its in a beta stage, I was curious how the DualCore and 1gb ram would make a difference and wow! Im very impressed here! I havent had a single lag, its so smooth and just runs any and everything with absolute ease! This is how I wanted android to be!!
Another thing is the screen, I had 480x800 phones before as well as SuperAmoled and very much enjoyed them, so I was very excited to see the SuperAmoledPlus Display, too my surprise I wasn't that impressed tbh, the blacks are incredible, the contrast honestly seems good but not what I expected, the IP4 seems on par even brighter in some places, but the biggest thing for me is the pixels, since I had 480x800 before and thought it was great, I didn't think it was gonna be a huge difference but wow it is, the retnia display is MUCH better with text. Theres definitely a difference.
All in all Im not sure what to do now, I think I have a beast of a phone in my hands and it IS good but im not satisfied in certain aspects and it seems the months I spent with IOS really took a hold of me, I find myself trying to do little gestures I did in IOS. Theres the IP5 coming but who knows how much that will be and my contract is not up till next year. I cant find a good case for my life on the GS2 while IP4 has several.
Personally I think WP7 is awesome! But the lack of apps and certain things I need is really pushing me away from it. Im not gonna lie sometimes I get annoyed with Apples restrictions and hate itunes but beyond that I very much enjoy it.
Is WP7 matured at this point? I keep hearing negative things about it in terms of sales and popularity.
Wow, somebody who sounds exactly like I was a few months ago!
I have the same issues with Android - admittedly, the phone I had wasn't the most powerful in the world, but then most Android phones aren't, and frankly it shouldn't be the case that it doesn't run properly on anything-but-the-latest hardware.
For me, switching to WP7 was a breeze. Everything that I needed worked straight out of the box - I downloaded Zune and checked the marketplace to make sure all the apps I would need would be available, or an alternative, and so far I'm only missing IM, but that will be included in Mango.
IMHO, whilst WP7 is truly fantastic as it is, it won't be mature until that magical Mango update gets pushed out. I know you can get the beta and what not, and as a Student I'm entitled to it through my dev account. But I'm done with all the hassle of custom roms, betas, and hacks - I just want a phone that works, and WP7 is providing that.
So in answer to your question, no, I don't think it is YET. But in a couple of months' time, when Mango gets pushed, it will be. And thankfully, all current owners will get the upgrade.
Interestingly, I was very positive about Android until maybe a year to 6 months ago. The problem with Android now, is that Google have just gone nuts - they are trying to make it excellent at everything, and in the progress messing everything up.
I admire Microsoft's slower, more considered approach - it means they are really thinking about who their market is, and working out exactly how to serve them. Makes for a much better product for those people, but not so good a product for the mass market of cheap-rubbishy-and-mostly-useless 'smartphones' that Android has created to it's own detriment.
saleswise its the new kid, compared to androids first year were doing outstanding but if you try and compare us now to the 3 year plus OSes saleswise, were just not there. Wp7 for me after the mango beta releases has proven to be the is to beat and with full-blown mango just around the corner its a hell of a bandwagon to jump on. What's there is epic and most of what's not is in mango. Sure you may miss features here and there if you enjoyed pointless and tedious tasks on android but wp7 overall beats out any other os in my eyes and I've now got 8 ex-iPhone users in my family completely sold. That's something I could never do with android.
Hmm....As far as things I didnt like with WP7, let me try to remember.
1.Cant save Camera settings.
2.No Drag and Drop files.
3.Stupid SD Card thing on Focus
4.No ringtone....
5.A couple of the apps didnt seem optimized properly? The eBay app in particular was pretty bad.
6.Not a lot of apps/games.
7.Dont have or use xbox live, Im a PS3 guy, not a negative though.
8.again Im a google guy, love maps, gmail etc.
Overall very few little things. I very much enjoyed it, just as I said it felt like it was in its baby stages and was missing apps that I use a lot, little and big features etc.
In mango, 1 is resolved, 3 was (I believe) resolved by a firmware update by Sammy, 4 is resolved, eBay app works fine now but it underwent an update about a week and a half ago that aided in speeding that up. 6, we now have 25,000 and there's actually good games that aren't xbl now. Google maps has been reproduced in an app called gmaps though I was a google guy and I'm pretty impressed with the latest Bing maps. Of course I think ovi maps will blow em all away... Gmail works fine, I've used it since wp7 first came out and loved it from the start.
OH and no native youtube app which I love on Android, thought that was weird.

1. I think you'll be able to save it in Mango, I saw it
2. Not going to happen and it's one of dozens of reasons WP7 is inferior, lack of file manager has terrible consequences
3. No idea
4. I think it will be fixed
5. Will be fixed I believe
6. Growing constantly however many things still missing without any hope
7. Well no choice here but equally you can't use XBOX on Android right?
8. Gmail is there, maps in it's glory - not, and it's a letdown.
For me WP7 is totally wasted opportunity.
Lazytube while not native has proven to be in my opinion the best YouTube app on any OS
I have gone from WM, to iOS, to Android, back to iOS, back to Android, to WP7, back to Android, and then back to WP7. I like to keep up with all the advances in technology.
I currently have an IP4 for work, HD7S for personal, and the Iconia A500 tablet. This gives me access to all the apps for all three platforms.
My first run with WP7 was great, but the lack of skydrive integration struck me as stupid. So, I went back to Android for a while (more on that later). I am now running the Mango Beta, and the skydrive integration is a key factor in the usability of this phone for me. Without access to an SD or external memory storage device, it makes using WP7 for anything serious very difficult. Now, I just do my file management on skydrive (from my laptop or desktop) and it works beautifully for my needs. I also use Windows Live Mesh to sync my skydrive data between all of my PCs.
There are so many little things in Mango that you don't notice right away. It's these little things that impress me the most with where MS is taking the WP7 platform.
I don't hate iOS or Android, however, iOS is nice and simple but almost preschoolish in it's nature. It's hard to get excited about grids of icons. iOS fanboys will say, WP7 is just a bunch of tiles. This is a gross understatement of what WP7 is. This is all they have to combat an OS they do not understand. For me, the WP7 UI is all about intelligence. Where iOS is preschool, WP7 is about to graduate highschool and start college. Don't get me wrong, I realize this is a dramatization but there is a point. I prefer things in my life that make me feel more intelligent. iOS does not do that for me. It actually makes me feel more like a sheeple.
Android has a lot going for it. It also has a lot going against it. There are too many flavors of Android and too many variations of features and capability. This causes problems with apps not working on your particular device, Devs not supporting your particular device, your device not getting updates to enhance app support, etc. The other major issue with Android, one rogue app can wreak havoc on the entire system. This rogue app can kill battery life, hinder performance and just ruin the entire experience. This is much like Windows 95/98 before XP helped get the app management under more control. Another issue is with the way updates are handled. Once malware starts spreading on Android, it will be much more difficult to get necessary patches/updates because of the update distribution model using by Android OEMs.
I originally upgraded my Samsung Focus (which was in the box for a few months) to Mango. I was so impressed with the update, I picked up an HD7S. This device, along with Mango, has managed to convince me to use WP7 on a daily basis. The most important apps for me are: LED flashlight, GPS/Speedometer, USA Today, Engadget, BoA, DirecTV, eBay, CraigsList, Netflix, Wikipedia. All these apps are available on WP7. I also appreciate the built-in hotmail and exchange support, Office, Zune, Xbox, and the social integration aspects coming with the Mango update. I really wish there was an HBO Go app available though.
So, in short, while there is no single mobile platform that is the best at everything, WP7 (with Mango update) is what works best for me.

There is a "native" app that IE will look for. It works okay... good for embedded stuff.

I still can't believe you still troll these forums a year later with idiotic comments like "inferior" as if they were fact. You need to point out that you're making an opinionated comment, rather than continuing to post as if Google demolishes Windows Phone. "Without Any Hope" - I can't believe I'm honestly the only person commenting on this. You go into every thread that has a hint of positive outlook for WP and you bash it and priase the crapstorm that is Android, and constantly get into a situations because of it. Just... Stop posting here if you aren't going to offer any real information pertaining to the OS, all you do is post your biased trash.
As for the topic. You'll see a maturing app market with the release of Mango. A lot of your main issues (with the exception of a file manager based system) have been addressed in Mango, and honestly, as far as files you can use SkyDrive in Mango just as easily. You can even set up SkyDrive in Windows Explorer on the PC as a "drive" and just drop into there, tbh. Ringtones and such have been fixed, and the addition of APIs are going to allow developers to really go at it now.
I also second LazyTube as the best YouTube app I have ever used, and SuperTube is a close second.
Yeah, there's about 4 or 5 people that if you put them on your ignore list the wp7 forums becomes a much more pleasant place.

All of my posts contain real info regarding this OS.
There is no single wrong info I'm giving here.
If the questions are asked answers are given. People here use both OSes or more and also want to know more than your endless love for WP7.
And would be great for you instead of constant whining give any real info about OS instead of opinionated and subjective blah blah like "it's the best I've seen".

I just don't understand why he needs to go into every thread and state his personal dislike for the OS and admiration for Android, even if threads that have zero to do with any sort of comparison. And then he has the audacity to blame the other people as though his word is the ultimate speech. He's been doing it for a year, and honestly, it's getting old.

I give realistic answers, I just stated FACTS as to why it would mature, I didn't spew some crap like "inferior to Android." You take your personal feelings of what an OS should have, and make them defining requirements. You're in a Windows Phone section, I'm sorry that people here actually research and like the products they purchase.

Actually, you've been spewing venom since way before April, thanks for trying though. People can easily look up your posts. Go to the Android forum, please, spread your love over there, not here. I have more than real answers, thats your response to everybody "You have no real answer, you have no real answer" - "oh you started it" - wrong buddy, you start it with your garbage.
Pfft... And the call me a troll every time I post a thread that isn't "zomgroflmaocopter I love android so much that I'm gonna 'splode" I understand that this is a predominately android forum and that's cool, whatever, they have devices so cheap I could buy one for 50 bucks, of course they're the most popular. They cost as much as a feature phone in some cases. However, we have our niche here and people such as yourself,n8ter, vetvito, etc. Just tend to spread unwarranted hate. I don't even know why you guys bothered picking up wp7, most of you were talking crap about it well before you supposedly got it.

really showing off ur trademark here. now for a REAL answer to what he's asking.
mango solves all of the concerns one had about wp7 in the early days and with SkyDrive, the lack of a file manager or drag and drop support is no issue at all to me or anyone else here that's made the switch (a workaround is in progress to provide USB storage support). apps really aren't a big deal like the are on android and iOS because alot of things can be done with the OS on its own through its included hubs and such, I can even watch videos from the full YouTube site with the html5 option enabled which negates the need for a YouTube app (especially since they don't show all the videos ). all in all you will love mango even in its beta state right now, everything works and works well.
