I don't know what else to do...
1st USB debugging is ON
I've tried using oneclickoot on my PC, and on my mac. I get the message Phone is not connected....
I've also tried that Bonsai Unlocker and the program cannot communicate with the phone.... so I bought a highly rated new data micro usb cable.
Guess what? I get the message Phone is not connected still on my MAC, PC and Bonsai unlocker.... WTH????
Now what?
Would a Data Factory Reset be of any help?
Install the Samsung drivers, if they are already installed re-install them.
This.
Make sure you unisntall them
Reboot
Re install them ...
Reboot
then try and Root ....
Keep trying with different ports ....
Turn off anti-virus. It may be seeing it as a threat.

If it says phone is nor connected then its the drivers. The computer didn't recognize the phone.

Yeah took me awhile. had to use my buddies evo cord and tried a bunch of different ports. tried his mac. his mac book and my desktop. I still cannot connect to my pc i just got lucky that one time to root. The one time it worked i dialed ##8778# and switched back an forth to PDA and modem on both the usb and uart. It was probably just a coincidence.
I had the same issue, it ended up being a defective phone of all things. 2 diffrent computers could not see it (osx and xp), nor read the sd card.
When I got my ec05 replacement, the getprop msl method didn't work either. I had to use the log method and go into the data menu and it popped up in a log for me.

But it's not even connecting on a MAC and I don't need drivers for Mac....
This can't just be drivers for windows.... the phone gets connected.... I can navigate the folders and all, copy files and such it's just the root that's not working for some weird reason.
I can also navigate the phone folders on a Mac, but again the root through a Mac wont work...
I bought a Blackberry cable, but I read the reviews and a lot of people recommended for Android devices as well..
What one click are you using?
I'm using the latest 3.1.0.1 and I've also tried the previous one can't remember the version from the top of my head now...
I'm telling you.... I'm giving up...
I just won't work... I don't know what else to try...
Maybe I'll buy and HTC and call it the day!!
i was having the same problem with 3.1 i had to use 3.0.2.5 then i flashed the new one... ill put a link for you u when i find it
I want to try a hard reset but i cant see my msl number using the conectbot and getprop commamd...
Is there another way to get it???

Getting your SPC\MSL
There is many possible ways to get your MSL for your Epic 4g.
1. If you still a Sprint customer you can call Sprint and ask for the MSL of your Epic, this is the most easy way to get it but not all CS representatives will give you the code.
2. Search and install “ConnectBot” from the Android Market, open the app, in the small dropdown box on the bottom left that says “SSH”, click and select “local” instead and on the “nickname” box put “Android” and hit Enter. On the new black screen with the “$” type “getprop ril.MSL”, you will get your 6 digit code, if that doesn’t work, reboot the device and try again. If it still doesn’t work type only “getprop” in this case you will get a very large command output scroll up and down and look where it says {ril.MSL}: {xxxxxx} the 6 digit number is your MSL
3. By using ADB, send “adb shell getprop ril.MSL” or “adb shell getprop” if the 2nd command is used you will need to look for the {ril.MSL} output

Do you have the ability to try a non-mac. They aren't known for playing nice. Plenty of people have had luck bringing their phone back. I'm kind of one the refusing to believe you have a strange phone that really doesn't want to work.
I've tried several times on my pc as well. Will try again tomorrow since i did a hard reset today and see what happens..

Try this. When you put your device in download mode it does install additional drivers.
Power phone off wait for the vibrate to tell you it is off
open keyboard hold down the 1 key and hit power
should come up to yellow triangle with a droid shoveling
In order to install drivers properly you may need to disconnect and reconnect the phone from the cable several times. And make sure any security programs aren't flagging the root program files as dangerous. That includes not only AV programs but some firewall-type ones too (like Comodo).

So, I flashed DK28 on my wifes Epic 4g the other day, and it killed the ability for USB Connectivity. No mounting, no tether, nada. I know what caused it, which was flashing with Odin. What I need to do is revert it back to DI18. To do that, I need to root the phone so I can install Rom Manager to flash CWM back to the phone and then flash DI18 back to the phone.
Before anyone asks, I've tried every possible solution to get passed the "USB Device not recognized" error." Including:
New cables (5 to be exact)
Different USB ports
USB Debugging on and off
Uninstall/Reinstall Drivers
Shutdown PC and unplug power cable for a few minutes
Nothing works. I was wondering if I could root it by copying the CWM files to the SD Card and using Terminal Emulator to run the commands to copy the rageagainstthecage-arm5.bin file and the super user APK to obtain root. Is this possible? Is there any method at all that I can use to get root access without the use of a USB cable? I've also tried that Universal root APK, and that didn't work either. Thanks in advance.
EDIT If you've tried everything, but can't get it to work. Try bending the little "tooth" within the usb port back towards the front of the phone, just a TINY bit. Thank you thank you thank you so much to squshy 7 for the idea. It worked like a champ!
you actually don't need to be rooted to go back to Di18. Just flash it in odin using the stock .tar file
follow these instructions and flash back to 2.1
http://forum.xda-developers.com/wiki/index.php?title=Samsung_Galaxy_S/SPH-D700#Odin_Stock_Flashing
does odin recognize the phone when you put it in download mode? (press 1 + power button)
Download mode also does not work. I can get into Download mode, but upon plugging in the device, I'm presented with the same "USB device not recognized" error.
z4root will root without a pc.
This thread has a clockwork flashable di18 rom plus modem.
And if you have trouble with rom manager, there is a manual way to install cwm.

I don't think so.
I think you can't modify permissions to run rageagainstthecage unless you use adb or have root access. The good news is, if you can get rageagainstthecage to run, you can use a terminal program to do the rest.
But z4root will not run on DK28 if I've read correctly. 2.2.1 patched the vulnerability that z4root was using to root people. So I'm still SOL. =( Thanks anyway though.

He doesn't have clockwork.
The OP might be able to do it with adb over wifi. Open run.bat from the one-click in a text editor and follow along. Once you run rageagainstthecage you will have root until you reboot and you can do the rest from a terminal emulator without adb.
I can use ADB over Wifi? Can you give me more information on this method? I have the files for CWM 3.0 ready to go, I just need a way to flash it to the phone, and since I don't have root - I'm sort of at a lose. This has given me hope!

The link in my post above leads to a program to do adb over wifi. I haven't tried rooting with it, so I don't know for sure if it will work for that. There appear to be several utilities on the market that do this. Just search "adb."
And if it does work, or you find an alternative that works, please let us know so we can tell others who are having a problem with usb connectivity.
Oh trust me, if I figure this out - I intend to write an entire guide for people having the same issue. This is the most annoying thing in the world. I should have at least flashed CWM2.5 first, but nooooo... Sheesh.
If it makes you feel better, flashing cwm 2.5.1.0 wouldn't have helped you. Odin wipes it out and puts the stock recovery back.
That does sort of make me feel a little better. I know there has to be a way to do this. I can remote into the device with an wireless SSH server, but I can't run ADB commands on that, and it says it supports wireless ADB also, and I can get ADB to connect, but every time I try to run a command it says "device offline."
Ugh, this is driving me crazy. I know for a fact there is way to do this, I just need to put all these puzzle pieces together.
Just my 2 cents...
But I too had the usb not recognized error...went through all the common solutions and after hours I was losing hope...
But you know what fixed it? Turns out the little usb "tooth" in the phone must have been bent *slightly* down. Because when I stuck a small clothes pin in there and bent it up a little bit, abra kadabra.
Just a thought...because there was absolutely no reason that tooth could have been bent down from anything other than me simply unplugging the phone the last time before I ran in to the problem...it could be your problem too

I'm willing to bet quite often. As I stated, the ONLY possible cause of that problem was simply unplugging it (or plugging it in)..because literally it was working, I pulled it out for something, then plugged it back in and that was when the problem started. It was only after looking at my girlfriends LG rumour's micro usb port that I noticed a very *slight* difference in the space between its "tooth" and the bottom (the wider edge) and the space of mine..I'm debating on adding it to the wiki...and possibly reporting it to samsung. Should qualify as a hardware defect.

Wow that's gooD. I don't have any problems yet but if I do I'll try that one. Good find.
You guys rock! I had the exact same problem for the past week and it was seriously depressing me. I couldn't upgrade, couldn't send it back to samsung (since I couldn't return to stock), etc. Stuck a guitar pick in there and like magic ... back in business.
THANK YOU SO MUCH!! now that my hardware problem is fixed I can get back to screwing up the software on my phone!

Before Odin can detect it you must first make sure your computer can detect your phone. That way you'll know if the drivers work fine. If it does then get a new USB cable to connect it while using odin. I got a rocketfish usb cable and it works better than the samsung one...or any usb cable such as a blackberry's works fine.

When trying to root make sure you aren't using a stock samsung usb cable. Some have been successful using them while rooting but for most it sucks. Are you enabling usb debugging?
I am having the same problem. Gingerbreak failed to run with the same error, and no amount of different cable or port (tried three of each) will avoid the phone not connected message when attempting one click root. I'd love to hear ideas to resolve either of these or other rooting options.
Update - tried the Bonsai unlocker mentioned in this thread, and tried the one click method on a second machine to which I had never connected my device. In all cases, got a phone connection failure. And yes, I have enabled USB debugging, and when I disable it, I am able to mount the phone just fine and see the external memory card, so there's nothing wrong with the USB port or cable. I have a relatively new replacement phone that came preloaded with Froyo. Maybe something has been done to newer devices to disable this ability? Can't imagine what else could be wrong.
thanks,

My bad - apparently I didn't have the right drivers installed. I assumed since I could connect in USB mode without debugging I had the right drivers, but apparently not. Sorry to bother. In case anyone else runs into this, I apparently can't post a URL to help you, so go look for a post on the Epic "All Things Root" forum on Android Forums,
It appears I am successfully rooted after having to reboot the phone once after a failure the first time I ran. Woohoo! Now I can do a true full backup.

The only way I could get mine to work (I would get the same errors using gingerbreak) I restored the phone to factory settings using the samsung recovery mode. Press power volume down and camera button. Your volume buttons are used to highlight the text and the home key is used to select. Wipe cache 3 times, and wipe the dalvick (spelled wrong) 3 times, then reset phone back to factory settings through here. Remember you will lose everything so back up your apps using AppBrain. I ran GingerBreak again and it worked perfectly. I would also get the same errors when trying to odin. Its been that way everysince I updated to 2.2. By the way I am EC05, did that before I updated because I was running midNight Rom.

I have an epic sitting at home that is useless as of right now because I no longer have a plan through sprint for it. I have a samsung replenish that I am using right now with Boost, and I am considering making it a donor phone and flashing the Epic over to Boost. Having this little thing really makes me realize just how awsome those Super AMOLED displays are. Anyway, I have a few questions before getting neck deep in this little endevour. First off, I don't want to be stuck on Eclair, but as I understand a Factory reset is necessary to get the 3G working, I read that people were abale to flash to Froyo using a few tricks, I was just wondering if the same works for Gingerbread. If anyone is running a Boost Epic on GB I would like to know how it is working out. Also, once the phone is flashed to said version of Android, can I just flash any rom on top of it through CMW without having to make tweaks?
And finally, I can not get either the Replenish or the Epic to read on CDMA Workshop, I have tried debug, non-debug, and diag modes and any combination, I have tried reading the phones in recovery mode, I have rebooted, restarted, unplugged, switched cables and ports....nothing...the phones both show up as modems and have their ports listed in device manager, but they absolutely refuse to show up, if anyone has any tricks that they could share regarding this issue it would be much oblidged
I know it's a lot but I figured I would try and cover all of my questions in one thread rather than making a bunch of seperate ones. BTW I have been researching for 2 days now, if there is something obvious that I missed, I apologize in advance, but I have tried other methods of resolution before creating this thread...Thanks in advance for any advice that you guys can offer...
We have a guide on here did you consult that? And I know that there is an alternative carrier fix for cm9 so you "could" get that puppy on android 4.0 =]. As for the computer not detecting... did you install the mobile drivers for the phones? I think you might need to if you haven't. I know when odining you need those I suppose the same for cdma workshop. Hope this helps at all =]. if you need the guide ill link it here.
Flashing Epic 4g to Boost Mobile Guide.
In this guide he is using the incognito but as long as you have a cdma phone to use as a donor phone you should be fine. If you havnet installed the drivers for either phones then this is most likely your issue. Also according to the guide you CAN flash other ROMs. The only thing that needs to be tweaked is the sms settings.
Yeah, I have looked at the guide, I was hoping to clarify on the few items that I wasn't clear on. I have installed the drivers for both phones and Odin does infact recognize each one, I use it to verify the Com ports that the phones are on...i'm baffled :/
After hours more of trying...and researching..I still can not get past the initial step of getting cdma to read my phones...either of them. Is there a section on this forum for requesting services? I dont care if I have to pay to get it done, I want my epic on boost...

I doubt it... but who knows. I dont see why they wont detect. They should if you have the drivers installed... maybe try just having one of the phones drivers installed at once... which ever phone you have to start off with have that phones drivers installed only. so unistall both then install just one that you need then unistall that one when the other one needs to be used... and you might want to reboot in between driver installations. drivers can be very picky. Or you could try another computer...
I'll give it a shot, its something new at least...I will post my results when I am done..

32 and 64 bit Drivers I know the drivers here work great and i have used them with every epic i've rooted... I just learned that the drivers im linking you to work for the replenish .
awesome, I am trying them as we speak...

Yeah you might need to try another computer. The usb ports could be bad/out on that one depending on how old it is. Or it could be the usb cable as well you'd be amazed at how much trouble is cause by those. Have you tried a brand new blackberry cable? those are the best cables at getting things recognized. What i dont get is that odin will COM the phone.... and this is in download mode right?
no, it coms both phones in debug mode, I have a few blackberry cables lying around that I have picked up on Amazon that I bought for Odin. Thats what kind of has me scratching my head too. It is an older laptop though, Id say about 4 years old, running windows 7 x64...I have checked QPCT as well just to see if it recognizes the phones and it doesnt either, so I guess it's some issue with my com port's compatibility with the mobile phone software....I will see if I can get away with doing this at work tomorrow, it may be tricky but my boss is old and senile lol
Well I tried it at work with no luck yet, which just leaves human error in to play...not sure what though, I've covered all of the options that I have come across. The replenish I could understand, but the Epic is documented to work just fine with CMDA WS...I just don't get it...
A couple things to try...
1. Connect the phone in normal mode (so it asks mass storage, etc) and let the drivers install.
2. Unplug, turn on USB debugging (Settings -> applictaions -> Development), plug the phone in and let it install ADB driver
3. With phone plugged in switch to dialer and hit ##8778#, then switch USB from PDA to Modem. Your PC should install another driver (Diag port).
Make sure you leave the Epic on this screen while accessing it via CDMAWS or any other program that uses the diag port.
I had major issues with the Epic, but that sequence finally got everything working. I still need to plug the phone in before enabling the diag port, otherwise stupid things happen.
This was all with an XP computer (three actually, before I figured out all the correct steps).
Thanks, I'll try that when I get home, I actually haven't tried putting it in diag mode while plugged in yet, I have always put it in diag and connected it...heres hoping..
ok, I finally got the replenish to connect, I found a way to root it and that worked like a charm....the epic however is still a no go...rooted running CWM 5, in diag mode, switched to modem, recognized as a modem....but still..failed...phone does not answer...any other suggestions guys?
Needs download mode not diag mode whatever that is... hold the 1 on the keyboard and the power button (yellow triangle) make sure is not in modem mode and you must flash the kernel from mkasick for ei22 search in xda "epic 4g gb kernel source" should me the first thread (ei22) kernel source with keyfix. Scroll to the bottom and find the gb3a.tar this is what you odin before cwm5 and it should stick. Then you can flash an su.zip and your done.

I have tried tether mode, switching ports, attempting while in recovery, and I get nadda....EL30 was what I had factory reset to, are you saying that I should flash back to ei22 for cdma or were you saying to do that to get it rooted?
No my appologies I, just read you rooted correctly. I'm not sure why it refuses to recognize the epic. Other than a better cable, or different usb port. I dunno. That or there is gunk in the epics usb port or in the computers. Should be in modem mode I'm assuming if your messing with the phoney. Stuff ='[ sorry.

I have upgraded to an S3 from having a Vibrant for years. I rooted and flashed several OS's to my Vibrant in those years without an issue ever. I have been trying to get files transferred to my S3 from my computer for 2 weeks now. The computer has the drivers installed correctly. It is recognized by name when I plug it in (it comes up as SGH-T999, Kies will recognize it too). whenever i try to transfer ANYTHING it stops in the middle of the transfer. just sits there with no further progress to be achieved. This is insanely frustrating. I am unable to root this thing because of the inability to actually transfer.
Things I have tried:
Uninstalling/reinstalling Kies multiple times
Uninstalling all USB device drivers multiple times
Reinstalling drivers through Kies and through Samsung's website multiple times
Factory reset on the phone multiple times (****ing aggravating btw)
Using my old Vibrant cable
Changing between MTP and camera mode... several times
Yelling at it
I have been trying to research how to fix this garbage for weeks now. there is no concrete way to remedy this problem that i have found. every thread about this is littered with the usual "uninstall your driver and reinstall it" nonsense that is the most generic response to anything tech related ever.
What I can tell you is that my phone is definitely getting recognized by anything that can do so. Odin, Kies, My computer, etc etc... it appears that the issue lies in the actual data transfer. As I mentioned, transfers initiate but will lock up mid-process and just hang there infinitely. Same goes with Odin when I try to get it to flash into CWM recovery.
Please, help. any time spent trying to fix this issue is greatly appreciated.
Are you uding the usb cable thst came with the phone?
Have you tried different cables? Or on another computer?
Im guessing your not rooted then?
Try installing the drivers ONLY. get them here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1728605
Uninstall previous versions of everything first.
What version odin are you using? Use 3.07 from above post if you're not already.
Also try this app
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1711009
If you are rooted try SwiFTP or another wireless transfer app.
Sorry to mention drivers again but if you're relying on kies to do that for you it could be the issue.

Since you've tried everything else might as well follow this guide and install the drivers through the toolkit.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28175575
I'd also run windows update and check if there's a new bios/drivers for your mobo and usb controller.
If you plug another "foreign" usb device does it install fine?
May not have any bearing whatsoever here but do you have usb debugging checked? And I think I mentioned it in the other post but try a different computer if possible.
You said that this happens when using odin too? As in you start the flash with Odin but it doesn't complete? Or it wont even start? Does it give you any message?
When plugged in in download mode, does Odin show your COM port in the upper left?
Plug in the phone and open device manager. Does it show any errors or anything?

I recommend an app called airdroid. I had issues transferring stuff to and from my Mac and haven't had any problems since I started using the program. Besides it's wireless so I don't have to worry about the wires being a problem

everything else works fine from my 6 USB ports (2 USB 3.0 ports as well). The tool kit solution still needs Odin to root. The problem is not detecting the device. it is the transferring of data. Data transfers begin but that's about it. Odin gets to "firmware update start" and then "boot.img" and just hangs there forever. no change. nothing else.
Is there a wireless way to do this? I have purchased Rom Manager but since i can't achieve root it is just useless now. The phone is brand new from the Tmobile store. Not once has it been dropped (to put into perspective how careful i am with my devices, I managed to drop my Vibrant once in ~3 years, which caused no damage, what a great phone that was). I have not been able to read about this same issue anywhere else either...generally its an issue with the PC not recognizing the device but when someone gets it to link up correctly, it works. this is the opposite.
thank you for your ideas so far.

Odin shows the "0:COM" like it should, which means it is able to read that the device is there, it just is unable to do anything after "boot.img", everything that is needed for this to work via the toolkit method is checked (USB debug and unknown sources).
I just got the s3 and had transfer issues too. Turns out my s2 drivers wasn't perfect for it even though it recognizes the device. I used the s3 drivers instead and that helped things a bit with accessing my phone's storage. So i ended up formatting my internal storage and that seems to do the trick for me.
If that doesn't work and odin still gets stuck then try different usb ports also try different wires

Try connecting without the external sdcard in.
What build are you currently on. Since you haven't roited or anything im assuming you're still on either UVALEM or UVALG1. If so try initiating the software update. It should download the ota thatll take you up to UVALH2. Maybe that'll help.

Did you do that through terminal? doesn't the single partition mean that it would wipe everything?
Make sure the drivers you are using are the same ones that are in my comment (version).
What are you trying to flash through Odin? If the permissions of the files inside the tar file are not correct, the transfer will hang, and do nothing but give a timeout message after a couple minutes. I learned this the hard way.
In summary:
Use a different USB cable.
Download drivers, Odin, and CWM from my signature. After uninstalling the old drivers manually through devman (be sure to delete them during uninstall), reinstall them from the package you downloaded. Then use Odin to flash CWM. All three of these packages are tested and known to be 100% working. Please don't ignore this step. If I can't verify the validity of your installation sources, I can't rule this out for troubleshooting purposes.
If this doesn't work, it is most likely your computer. Are there any BIOS firmware updates that improve USB compatibility, or USB controller driver updates? The USB 3.0 isn't natively supported on =< Win7, so those are third party drivers. But I will assume you are connected to a USB 2.0 port.

None of that worked. I did find a BIOS upgrade for my mobo that i didnt know was released, flashed it, and transfers still hang. i tried everything from your sig to no avail. i DON'T have access to another computer... BUT i do have Ubutnu running on my comp in conjunction with Win 7 Ultimate 64. can't seem to find too much on non-international S3 stuff for linux.
this has consumed my entire day and i am so frustrated.
Try in safe mode? This sounds really frustrating. I gave up when this happened with my mac. I think someone said it already but I always recommend Airdroid. It's just simpler.

so let me get this straight... you plugged the phone in, right clicked on it in a browser window, clicked on format, selected yes to the "hey, this is going to erase everything on the device" warning pop up, and you were able to transfer files no problem after that? no adverse side effects came from this? it sounds like it would brick the phone...

Yeah I'm starting to think you might need to use a different computer. Odin detects so it's not drivers.
From my experience with the hangs when i was on the s2. Many also reported this but what helped was different usb ports, wires, or an entirely different computer.

I just inherited a t-mobile phone that was rooted. I installed the latest version of TWRP and tried to re-root it but now it's in a boot loop and on top of that I can't connect the phone to a computer b/c I get the "USB Device Not Recognized" message. I've re-installed the drivers and I've tried the toothpick trick. Nothing is working. What are my options?

First, I believe this is the correct section - the phone I am working with is a T-Mobile Galaxy S II... Second, I can't Odin because I don't have a working usb connection. I've tried several different ROMS from this fine section and I get the same result... Boot Loop
If you flashed TWRP 2.6.3, that's your problem.
Flash 2.6.1
This is the wrong section because it has nothing to do with ROM development.
With that being said if you can still boot into twrp you still have hope. Try loading a different ROM into an SD card using a converter and slide back in the phone to properly wipe first then re flash.
I don't understand why you can't get a proper USB connection going but above suggestion may solve it.

Just to confirm a few things: where do you not have the working USB connection? in download mode? If so, I'd try reinstalling the drivers.
Also, I see in your sig that you state your phones are:
Asus Nexus 7
Sprint Galaxy Note 2
Neither of which is a SGH-T989. Are you sure you are flashing the correct ROM/Kernel for your device?
also you said it came rooted but you re-rooted it. What process did you use to re-root it?
One last thing: you say you got it second hand, are you sure it is a T-Mobile galaxy S 2? May want to check under the battery for a "T989" or "i9100". The i9100 is NOT a T-Mobile galaxy S 2. It should be SGH-T989 if they didn't give you incorect info about the phone.
You could also try a different USB cable or hub. I've had USB extension cables give me grief and the front ports on my PC don't like my phone.

Let it sit on the TeamWin screen for a minute or so... I find it sometimes takes a little bit.
If it doesn't ever get past there, try hooking it up to a PC and see if you can get ADB to load (presuming you have ADB installed and ADB drivers installed). If you can, try to do an "adb pull /proc/last_kmsg" and a "adb logcat > logcat.txt" and zip those up and toss them on here.
If you CAN'T get into adb, I would try hooking the phone up to Kies and see if it will do anything for you.
Or you could try following this guide as you have the T-Mobile SGH-T989 (not the Telus SGH-T989D):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1513359
BUT make sure to grab the correct stock image file for whatever version your android currently is (ie if you are on Android 2.3.6, then make sure to get the T-mobile KL1 2.3.6 stock image).
Also, what ROM did you flash? was it a 4.3 ROM? If so, did you update your radio before you flashed the ROM? I think 4.1+ needs the updated radio to function properly.
I know you said you can't connect through ODIN, but I'm hoping it is because of some odd driver or odd ODIN version. That thread has the stuff to make it all work I believe.
I'm really hoping you can get ADB to work. If you can pull a logcat of your bootup process, it will be much easier to figure out what went wrong.

weird... I am not sure why it is being so fussy with your phone.
Hopefully somebody has a better suggestion than I do, but my next thought is to try ebay-ing the phone in hopes that somebody gives you a few bucks for it. It sounds to me like the internal memory module is dying and the USB port is shot.
Is your water damage sticker pink/red or missing? It should be under the battery.
I hate thinking that the phone is just dead, but without being able to connect it to the PC in either recovery or download mode and not being able to boot into a ROM or recovery, I think the next step is to scrap it and hope somebody can send you a few bucks... or if you have experience soldering, maybe try replacing the USB connector?
I could be wrong mind you... The only time I had issues like that it was due to a badly flashed recovery and I needed to use ODIN to get back up and running. As a thought, do you have a Windows XP 32-bit computer you could try plugging the phone into? And while the phone is plugged in, can you check device manager for all devices? maybe try installing the drivers manually? I suggest windows XP 32bit because that is what I use the majority of the time with my phone. I've also used Windows 7 64-bit and it worked.

that sucks. I've heard good things about Swappa, but living in Canada I can't use it. My opinion it sounds like you got a dud and based on how hard the guy is fighting to not give you a refund, I wouldn't be surprised if he knew it was doa and just fluked out and get it running before he sold it. Or maybe it got water damaged and he knew it would fail soon so he sold it before it completely quit.
I hope you get it all sorted out.
Good luck and sorry I couldn't be more helpful.
