I'm currently using 4.22.651.2 Rooted & Odexed - updated 06/05/11 on my Evo and wanted to know how I can have the Sense Rom installed along with [6-21-11][ROM] gingerbread-evo-deck [1.2][2.3.4 Stable] while using Rom Manager to swap back and forth?
I'm not asking if I should use Rom Manager either so don't come in here and say Rom Manager is crap, as that's not what I'm asking 'tough guys'...
There is no dual boot that does this quickly. You would need to back up one then restore the other to switch between ROMs. I never used ROM manager, but backups should work the same way. The backing up and restoring takes a while though so it may be a pain in the ass.

go into rom manager/ backup and restore/ create a back up of one, then flash the other and do the same. write down the names of the backups so you can tell which one is which, backup first one go into restore and see the name of that backup, same with second one.
i use amon ra, but it works the same. then when ever you want to switch to the sense rom from decks just restore that backup, or vice versa.
before doing the backups make sure you have it all setup with apps you want and all, so that you dont have to setup the phone everytime you restore a backup.
if it helps thanks button

Just to clear this up, I keep my current rom, use rom manager and make a backup and name it 'stock' or something similar. Then flash my phone with rom X and once that is up and running I then make that backup, then I can go into rom manager and switch from the stock and the X one?
X being whatever rom I install.

yes but you wont be able to re-name it, what i do is document last 4 digits in the name and write down what rom that is for example: 0713 is my kings 7.4 rom
0109 is my synergy rom and so on. but other than that yes exactly, make sure you install all the apps you use when installing the (x) rom so that when you restore you wont have to re-install them everytime.
sorry it took so long to reply, lost internet in the middle of typing this out.

Contrary to what I said above, I just saw this on the XDA portal:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/boot-up-to-4-different-roms-with-dualromx2/
Anyone know if it works on the EVO? The EVO is very similar to the incredible, I would think it would work.

I installed rom manager and was going to start testing out different roms but had a few questions.
1. If I backup my current rom with rom manager are all my apps/settings saved in that backup.
2. I backup all my paid apps with titanium backup. once I flash a new rom can i restore my paid apps back on a new flashed rom.
Thanks

I believe Rom manager back up just does a Nand Back up for you. if this is correct then yes all your apps and settings are saved I am not 100% because i havent used rom manager much.
with titanium back up yes you can restore your paid and all other apps onto the new rom, it also saves there settings which is a big bonus.
What i usually do is make a nandroid back up through recovery for each rom I try. (i have a stock oh **** fall back nand as well and i save all these on my computer except 1 or 2 i use frequently).
I assume you are using the stock rooted rom now. I would make a nandroid of it then do all the wipes and flash a new rom set it up and as long as everything is working you are ready to go. before flashing the next rom yu want to try nandroid that rom and that way if you like it better you can easily restore the back up and be right were you left it.
Rom Manager makes a full backup of everything. I have't tested Titanium backup yet.

Couldn't have said it better. My nandroid back ups are starting to pile up....
I am running Virtuous and it is running smooth as butter, but I would like to try one of the CM7 nighly, and want to be able to go back if need be with out hours of work. I am running clockwork recovery and rom manager, and also have titaium back up installed. Phone is rooted with s-off. Can I just run a back up from rom manager do a complete wipe and install CM7. I also need to update hboot from .79 to .92 should this be done prior to the rom manager back up. Should CM7 not work out how do I restore back? Thanks
Yeah just nandroid (which means backing up the rom and all your settings) and you can go back at any time. In Rom manager just go to Backup current Rom and you will always have a copy of your setup EXACTLY as it is.
You can update HBOOT whenever you want, it really doesn't matter when you do it. Once you do it will stay that way.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't doing a nandroid backup essentially make a complete clone of your entire phone that you can restore later?

Okay, here's what you to do back up:
1. Back up your apps with Titanium Backup - DO NOT BACK UP PHONE DATA. Backing up data for games (e.g. Angry Birds) is fine, but don't back up contacts or Gmail or anything that's going to be included in your new ROM. Reason is, when you restore everything (more on that later), you don't want to have conflicting data screwing things up.
2. Make a nandroid using ROM Manager. Just go to where it says backup current rom, and let it do it's magic. You can (and should) rename it to something you can remember. DO NOT USE SPACES. I like to name mine with the date, ROM name, and version number (e.g. 2-3-11_Virtuous_3.1.0)
3. After the backup finishes, install the new ROM - I always do this through ROM Manager.
4. When CM7 is finished installing, download Titanium Backup and restore your apps using the batch operation - it's a lot simpler than trying to find all your apps and download/install them yourself
5. To go back, simply click "Restore Backup" in ROM Manager and pick Virtuous and all your hard work will be restored
Enjoy!
I've had lots of trouble with ROM manager not restoring or backing up my current ROM properly.....it'll always say that the installation was aborted or say the file is corrupt

Am I asking for trouble when backing up apps via titium, and switching roms? I thought that I read that somewhere? I have used app brain to do the restores, but it is a little slow. Also Thanks to everyone for the replies.
I've read that the newer versions of Clockwork are troublesome....anything after 2.5.05. I just went in and erased any previous ROM's that I don't use anymore to free up valuable space on the SD card. Hopefully it works, but the message error i've been getting......well not a message error, but my phone seems to freeze up while developing MD5sum. I read to leave it alone and it might take 10 min's actually, but just want to confirm this is true. Thanks.

I've gone from Stock to Virtuous to MIUI to CyanogenMod and I can say definitively that I have never had any problems with Titanium backing up/restoring apps. You are asking for trouble if you try to back up system data and restore it for ROM's that they were never intended for - just back up the apps you downloaded from the market/installed yourself and you'll be fine
So here is what I did,
1 Did a Rom back up from Rom manager
2 Backed up user apps with Titanium Pro
3 Updated Clock Work Mod to 2.5.1.2
4 Flashed Hboot from .79 to .92
This is were ran into a problem, after hboot flashed it just went into a boot loop were all I could do is go into hboot or clock work recovery but that is it phone would not boot. I searched a little and read that hboot wipes the kernal and that is why it will not reboot. I then went into clockwork and restored the rom I backed up in step 1, and it worked like a charm. Thought I would share so any one else who runs into this. Now off to flash cm7!
Rocking CM7 now, Thanks for all the help and advice from everyone. The Android community rocks.
Hey everyone... I was wondering -
If I make a NANDroid back up of my stock froyo rooted ROM (ROM #1),
Do a full wipe and then flash another ROM (ROM #2) and make a NANDroid BU of ROM #2,
Then do another full wipe and flash another ROM (ROM #3) and make a NANDroid BU of ROM #3...etc etc...
My question is - Can I restore any given NAND BU to any given ROM, or Do i actually have to reflash that ROM to get it back on the phone?
I tried doing this with a NAND BU that I made with a ROM I had flashed... it got buggy and I ended up restoring my NAND BU from the stock ROM. Then I wanted to show some one the ROM I had flashed before and tried to restore the NAND BU I made of that particular ROM and it got 3 dots into the restore then said it couldnt be completed.
I am wondering if it couldnt be completed b/c the NAND BU was corrupted some how - or if this is actually not some thing you can do...
any info on this would be helpful...

yes you can do that. before you restore you may want to wipe the cache and dalvik just to make sure that is all cleared out (unless you also do backups of the cache)
What recovery are you running when the restore failed? i am guessing amon, so when you get an error you should move the log to sd so you can check out what exactly the error was

Ok, I thought I could but I was thrown off by the failed attempt. I always do a FULL wipe when flashing from one ROM to another... and I'm not sure how to back up the cache...
The main back ups I preform are the NAND, Titanium and occasionally I use MyBackUpPro...but I only use the last one for contacts and texts...
I always use Amon_Ra... I am currently using 2.2.1... I am assuming that the NAND BU was corrupt some how.
I am trying to think if I made the back up with the same version of Ra or not and I assume that shouldnt make any differance. Now the only other variable would be that I changed the name of the main file - but I always do that with all my NAND BUs and I didnt have any problem restoring my stock froyo that was named in the same format...(ex: StockFroyo-011911 <~~ which worked Vs. WarmTwoPointTwo-012911 <~~ which did not work)...
You can make backups of multiple and re-flash them at your will [just know which is which, by naming them.] Also, do a cache and dalvik wipe before hand, and you're good to go.

If your battery is less than 30%-40% or something, Amon-Ra won't restore or backup. If it's not working, plug in your phone and try again. Also, I would upgrade to RA-2.3. Much better IMO, only version since 1.8 that I haven't had any trouble with. I had also sorts of issues with backups and restores either taking FOREVER or just plain not completing. For the first time, I'm at a point where i have like 5 ROMs on my phone and switch whenever I feel like.

I would like to better understand how to correctly switch back and forth between roms.
Whenever I have put a rom on my phone, I have done a full wipe and reinstalled from scratch (and then made a nandroid backup.)
I don't understand what I need to do once I get my MikFroyo set up the way I want, what steps need to be taken to back it up how I have it and then how to correctly load up a new rom?
And another question, when I go from one ROM to another, if I use a backup of some sort to load up, what areas need to be wiped prior to restoring the backup's?
So what do I need to do in order to switch up between Sense based and AOSP roms depending on the mood and what I am feeling on any given day that will allow the least amount of time but the most accurate and correct method of doing this?
Thank you for the help,
Whiteice

The best bet to keep your settings would be to do a nandroid backup after you set it up the way you want and then rename the backup to say something like Latest Mikfroyo.
Then wipe, flash, and reinstall apps the way you want it either manually or using Titanium Backup or Appbrain. Then repeat for every ROM.
I have a ton of backups made already for almost all the ROMs out there and I switch back and forth for testing purposes.
Try not to keep the nandroid on your SD Card since it takes up a ton of space.
But there are differences between certain ROMs. Some might use A2SD or only work with a certain kernel. So you would have to keep those as well. Rename them to match the correct ROM as well. So MikFroyoKernel.zip for example.
Nandroids won't back up the correct kernel. So you would want to wipe > flash kernel (if needed) > reboot > boot into recovery > wipe > restore nandroid.
That will do it for the most part. But mind you, sometimes the nandroid will fail. Not sure exactly what causes this but you can always restore another backup. Sometimes flashing the original ROM then restoring works as well.

If you do full wipe won't have any problem going between Sense and AOSP. Just don't import your settings cause could mess things up.
Also, I always wipe/format the sd-ext as well. Depending on how you are set-up could have apps from the old rom show up in new after boot.

nope, it dont matter if ur going between aosp or sense, nand will restore everything... but u might wanna read up some more on the latest amon-ra recoveries dat have been released, because whenever i do a nand restore, i get stuck in a boot loop, n its quite annoying...

Only if there is an existing backup to go to. OP really didn't specify whether switching between Sense & AOSP backups or new installs in that last paragraph.
Is there an easy way to switch between roms on my evo? There is two roms I like and would like to hop back and fourth between them...but I may can only flash one at a time...any ideas? I think I saw a program called rom manager? Maybe that will allow me to do that?
Thanks!
ROM Manager, it is. A blessing.

You could use rom manager. Backup the roms you want to use and when you want to switch use the restore option in rom manager.
yes. use nandroid back-up and easily flash between whatever it is you wish.
wether it be clockwork mod or amon ra!
K this might be a stupid question, but with Rom manager you can easily switch back and forth between roms, i understand that fact, but can you flash files with Rom manager? I usually have to reboot into recovery and then flash a certain file and reboot.
I just bought clockwork premium! WOOHOO!
Right now I am running a sense rom...lets say I get rom manager to install Cyanogen rom...will it erase all my apps ect? Or when I switch between the roms will it save everything as is?
THANKS!
You wouldn't want to just keep flashing the ROMs over and over, you would want to create nandroid backups of each and then just restore which ever one you are in the mood for. You can do this with Rom Manager or Amon Ra. That way, when you switch, it will restore with all your apps and data that were on the phone when you created the backup.
you can use rom manager to do all that stuff, but i definitly reccommend booting into recovery, doing a backup of the roms you like, then when you want to switch roms, boot into recovery again, and just use the restore feature, this way u can switch between to two roms without have to reflash and reset them up, all ur doing is restoring the backup
Use Titanium back up for ur apps then back up ur ROM via ROM Manager which will bring you into recovery and do the rest. So now u got ur apps backed up for any ROM u decide to use.
