[HOW-TO] Root your Evo and apply zip files with style

Being that XDA has great info but 5x the garbage, here is some knowledge if you are interested in having root access on your HTC Evo 4G. This may change in the future.
Brought to us by Toastcfh, so this has been known as the "Toast" method of root and is quickly becoming the only way to go if you want root access. So thanks to him and anyone who has helped in the process.
Note: This process will wipe all data from the phone, so you will HAVE to start from stock.
Steps to have root:
Step .1
No matter what version of stock you are on, download this file: PC36IMG.zip
This file can be found directly here: http://link.geekfor.me/rootedromzip
Original site and info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=690762
Now that you have this file, place it on the root of your sdcard. That means in your sdcard, and in no other folder. DO NOT rename this file. This will take care of acquiring root. But we are just getting started, so on to the next step.
Step .2
This next part will cover getting ready to use a custom recovery. This has be given to us by Koush and is known as ClockWorkMod Recovery. Major thanks to him and the devs behind ROM Manager for making this so simple/PC less.
Download this file: recovery-clockwork-1.8.1.7-supersonic.zip (file version may very)
The file can be found here: http://www.droidaftermarket.com/koush/recoveries/recovery-clockwork-1.8.1.7-supersonic.zip
Again, original site and info can be found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=699043
Now, with this file, you want to place this in the root of your sdcard as well. However, this must be renamed to 'update.zip.'
Note: This file must be named update.zip and remain in the root of sdcard to use regularly.
Step .3a
Here you will want to download whatever rom you want in zip format and stick it in the root of your sdcard as well. You will need this for later. Most roms now have the super user app so you will be good to run rooted apps.
Step .3b
There is a good possibility that whatever rom you just downloaded does not come with the newer radio for the phone. This is available in a zip as well. Again, put in the root of sdcard and save for later.
Download this file: evo.1.39.00.05.31.zip
Found here: http://link.geekfor.me/radio139000531
Info here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696462
All files should be in the ROOT of your SDCARD. Meaning not in any folder.
Now that the files are ready, we can begin to attain root access.
Step .4
First you must reboot the phone into recovery mode. To do this you must turn your phone on holding the Volume Down button and the Power button until a white screen comes up.
When this screen pops up, the phone will go into recovery mode and works automatically. Give it some time (~60 seconds) and it will ask you if you want to install PC36IMG.zip.
Step .5
When the phone asks you if you want to update, click the Volume Up button to say YES.
Allow the phone to work. Takes a couple minutes so take a little breather.
Step .6
Once complete, the phone will ask if you want to reboot the phone. Again you click the Volume Up button and respond, YES.
Allow the phone to boot and install the stock rooted rom. Once the phone has booted, do not bother signing in and everything as you will be doing it again very soon. But congratzi, you have root access! But only from Recovery mode.
Step .7
Power down your phone. And then, turn the phone on by holding down Volume Down and Power.
Step .8
This will send you into the white screen that is searching for PC36IMG.zip. When it is done, this time decline the update by pressing Volume Down. Then it will ask you if you want to reboot. Press Volume Down again and say NO.
Step .9
This will send you into a menu that you can actually control. Use the Volume buttons to navigate up and down. Use the Power button to select. Scroll down to 'Recovery' and press Power. This will reboot the phone with a black screen and a red exclamation point icon.
Step .10
From this black screen, press Volume Up and Power. This will send you into the real recovery mode.
Step .11
Once here, again use the Volume buttons to navigate and Power to select. Navigate down to 'wipe data/factory reset' and select with Power. This will wipe the phone and get you ready for your first rom.
Step. 12
Once that is done, navigate to 'apply sdcard:update.zip' and press Power to select.
Congratulations, you are now in the custom recovery of ClockWorkMod.
Step .13 and beyond.
This menu is a fully capable recovery. Although it takes some time to get to, here is where you flash any zip you want. I recommend you start with the rom, then the radio. It doesn't matter really. And if the rom comes with the radio then it is redundant. But flash to your hearts content and enjoy your rooted Evo.
To flash zips, navigate to 'install zip from sdcard' then select whatever zip you want to apply. Refer to the roms instructions for any specifics.
Enjoy!
Note:
-Notice I didn't say "connect to computer?" This really can be aquired completely ota if necessary.
-Later on you might want to rename PC36IMG.zip and store it somewhere safe on the sdcard and home computer. Not that you will ever really need it, but if you want to go back to stock, this is a semi-automatic way to do so.
If there were a "thanks" button, I would have clicked it. Very nice of you to put all of this in one thread. Going to help a lot of people out.
Thanks. Finally a short & sweet guide.
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk
hey thanks y'all. I wrote this because flashing seems kinda confusing to people and for those who have yet to take the leap gain more confidence. fear not the root process! find a rom you like, use this, and boom. eventually think this is how themes will work... im guessing there is always metamorph as well.
Yea, I came from the Droid and used the crap out of Rom Manager. That is one awesome app for testing and frequently changing roms.
I wrote a rooting guide and have pictures in it of the recovery process, feel free to use them in here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=701152
Great job Burst! This does help out for newbies. This should be pinned in a newbie forum. They also need something like this in the event you need to push apps to your phone.
Example: if a newb installs a Flipz rom (.2), and he wants to keep fm radio feature on his phone it would be nice if some has a guide like this to help.
Anyways great job again.
this was awesome!
I did this all OTA just for fun and it worked great! And I agree that it already seems faster and more efficient! Nice job!
i'm not asking this because i think it was any fault of your tutorial, but because i'm guessing you'd know the answer: when first going into recovery and installing update from .zip, i'd had whatever rom removed all of sprint's bloatware, but in the format it came in after downloading. after selecting the update, it said no update had been found. i rebooted and renamed the file to update.zip, but after trying the aforementioned steps again, it said the file didn't meet the verification of something. this is starting to aggravate me; i've been trying for a while to load a custom rom.

update.zip is the 1mb~ recovery zip, leave the rom named what it was.
If you just want to add zip files do you have to have full root? I currently am using unrevoked as I dont need full root, at least I dont think I will. LOL
For some reason this is still not adding my zip file. I have been though this process 3 times. Its really frustrating. All I want to do is add one zip file. Pulls out hair.

Install guide :
1. Disable any lagfix if have it installed
2. Make sure have the 2e recovery. If your rom is froyo and you don't have 2e recovery, use cf-root by chainfire
3. Make sure you have a backup of your /efs (not mandatory, but highly recommended).
4. Factory reset is NOT required, but is recommended. Wipe cache and dalvik cache if you’re not performing a factory reset.
Installation Steps:
1. Download the ROM and put Spike Speedy Edition v2.0.zip on your internal memory
2. Download clockworkmod recovery from here. You *need* Clockworkmod, this won’t work with stock recovery.
3. Rename the clockworkmod recovery file to “update.zip” and put it on your internal sdcard.
4. If you had Voodoo installed prior to installing this ROM (eclair or froyo), make sure you still have the "disable lagfix" folder inside "/sdcard/Voodoo". If you’re coming from sztupy’s kernel, make sure you have disabled all Lagfixes from CWM.
5. Shutdown phone, wait for it to power down, then boot the phone into recovery mode (press volume up, keep it pressed, then press home button, keep it pressed, then press power button, keep it pressed until you see the Galaxy S screen. Release all three buttons when you see it).
6. Select “apply sdcard:update.zip” (use volume rocker to move up and down, and home button to select). Clockworkmod recovery will boot now (you may have to do apply update.zip twice for Clockworkmod to show up).
7. Once in Clockworkmod, select “install zip from sdcard” (use volume rocker to move up and down and the back button to select).
8. Select “choose zip from sdcard” and then select Spike Speedy Edition v2.0.zip. Then choose yes.
9. The update will start (will take some 5 minutes) and during the flashing you will see some strange big characters on the screen, don’t worry, that’s normal. After the process finishes, you will be dropped back into Clockworkmod recovery. From there, choose go back, and then reboot phone.
10. The first boot will take some time as the ROM will deodex
Special tnx to kalpik for install guide.

[Noob Toutorial to Modding]- "THEMES"

[Noob Tutorial to Modding]- "THEMES"
Ok so basically this a short toutorial for semi-noobs who are looking to
change their ui experience and look but really have no where to start.
Their are plenty of mpdi themes out there (MPDI is the category that the imagoes on your phone
[ie. the g1] fall under), which means you have a semi wide variety for you to choose from.
So lets get started.
:[OFFICIAL WARNING]:
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR WHATEVER HAPPENS TO UR PHONE IN CASE U BRICK IT.
IT IS IN UR BEST INTEREST TO DO A NANDROID BACK UP BEFORE ATTEMPTING ANYTHING,
SPECIALLY EDITING SYSTEM FILES.
-YOU MUST BE ROOTED-
Things u will need-
1. ADB- already installed (many guides out there)
2. A Copy of your Current Rom (it will be a zip file)
3. APk Manager- forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=695701
4. Theme you would like (GOOGLE is you friend)
Ok so after u get all of that together your ready to get modding.
1.Start off by connecting your phone in debug mode to your computer. (go to settings to enable debugger mode)
2.Find your Current Rom and unzip it.
3.Go to /System/res/framework/ and find Framework-res.apk
4.Open your APK MANAGER folder and place your "framework-res.apk"
under apk-for modding
5. Now open the .bat file
6. Once the CMD Screen has opened (the screen that looks like the letter from the matrix)
you will see a list of options, press 22 (select project)
7. Now select framework-res.apk by pressing the number that applies to it ( if its your only file in the
folder it will be 1)
8.Now press 1 again to extract apk (now your apk is ready to be edited.)
9.Return to the main folder where your apk-manager is located and open ur projects folder
10.Open the folder "Framework-res" then go to the folder that "res",
then finally to a folder that called drawable-mdpi
11.Now that you are here u will need to go find the theme that u want on you phone
(remember that it MUST be mdpi)
12.Unzip the File (either metamorph theme or the .zip theme file)
13.(Skip if u got a meta morph theme)
Now find your framework-res.apk file and change it to framework-res.zip and unzip it
14. Head into the res and into drawble-mdpi folder
15. Now dragg all your files from the theme drawble-mdpi to your project drawble-mdpi folder.
16. It will ask forever rides just approve them all. (your replacing the image from ur stock room for the one that u want your phone to have ei. new theme)
17. Return to the apk-manager (matrix looking screen hehe) and hit 3 (zip apk)
hit 1 when asked what kinda of file is it. (1.system apk)
18. Now hit 5 after that's done (zipalign)
19. Make sure your phone is connected and u have it in debugg mode.
20. Press 8 and type in /system/framework/framework-res.apk (exactly like that or else it wont work)
21. Once its done reset your phone and enjoy.
So if u have any questions please ask...
I tried to make this as simple as possible but i did write this on about 2 hours of sleep and and it is my first tutorial of if I messed up somewhere let me know.
I was once a noob and I just thought this might help out some people
who have caught on a bit, but are still pretty new to this.
thanks!! this helped
Oh no ... not even a description!
Yes!!! I atleast helped one person!
Well I say thankyou ! Let me see if I get this right though you mod the theme that's on your phone? If this is right can you then export your theme so others can flash it. But only people with the same rom? Sorry if I don't make any sense total noob lol
Sent from my HTC Dream SparksMod using XDA App
Correct...
Technically u can just "flash" ur modded "framework-res.apk" to another phone that has exactly the same rom as u. BUT!!!! u just can't flash it... u need to do adb push!!!!!
OMFG, it is not working. I am stuck at 18. It will tell in system log it can't find signedframework-res or unsignedframework-res. I was trying this 3 hours and I am ****ing angry
I think u need to redo step 17 and make sure u press 1, when it asks you what kinda of file is it.
But U do need to bring more information!!!!
thanks.helped me so much.
thanks for helpful thread ! sorry i dont mean to be spam because i dont see button thank.
Awesome tool....!!!
makes everything so easy
---------- Post added at 04:46 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:39 PM ----------
This tutorial helpful thanks for sharing
hey can i do this with any apk...... ???????? like mms and launcher and also the market apps apks ? plz tell me how exactly thanx

[Guide][zip][Root needed] Unsimlock your Defy (v1.3)[NEW:JB support!]

This is a software unlock for the Motorola Defy
NEW: Jelly Bean roms and ICS roms work!
See the troubleshooting post (post N°2) if you have problems!
Last update: 06/06/2012 ->Troubleshooting section updated (see post 2)
Disclaimer: This manipulation is not risk free. Niether I nor XDA Developpers can be held responsible for damage made upon your phone. Thus, don’t worry we're doing good work and you'll do a backup
Root is needed!
Credits go to yakk from motofan.ru / Special thanks to Labsin for his involvement and help
Note: Not all Baseband versions work with this hack, to know if it will work for you, go to settings-> system info and check if baseband version is "EPU93_U_00.59.01". If it is not indicated there, then try installing defybaseband switcher and look at info in the app
If your baseband version is different, you can try to change it to the one that works (nandroid backup first ) by downloading Baseband_change(EPU93_U_00.59.01).zip, and putting it in /sdcard/, and flashing it via recovery.
Flashing a zip has never been easier
Thanks to labsin, there's an easy flashable.zip that will:
Backup your original two files and put them in the folder "simlock_original_files" on your SD card (safety first )
Apply a modification to init.mapphone_umts.rc
Copy the fixed bp_ptc file
Go into recovery, flash Softunlock_defy_v1.1.zip that fits your baseband version and you're done!

!!YOU MUST REBOOT ONCE AFTER THE OPERATION BEFORE CHANGING SIMS!!
Voila!
Don't forget to reboot phone once!
Only then you can test by rebooting with another simcard
Hit thanks button if i helped you!
Any problems? I'm here to help
Changelog
v1.3:
ICS ROMs are now fully supported!
v1.2:
zip will check if the line to be added already exists, so it doesn't get added more than once
v1.1:
automated zip that will add a line in mapphone_umts and copy fixed pt_ptc in system
Troubleshooting
I have no signal when i put another simcard in my Defy
Have you rebooted at least once BEFORE changing sim cards??Try using Defybaseband switcher to select the correct frequencies for your carrierTry method below
You are still asked the unlock code
- Turn on Airplane Mode
- Run Terminal emulator and type "su" and then "bp_ptc"
- Turn ofr Airplane Mode
Airplane mode won't turn off
Flash the baseband(EPU.0.59..) file in the first post, then play around with your APNs and network settings untill you fix it (see post 308)
You are having trouble unlocking a stock ROM
See Post 260
Proof of success

Holy mother of Jesus, I could unsimlock my defy+ (plus) . Here is what i did (i think some steps could be ignored but is good to know the entire procedure i've done)
1) Because of a failed CM7 flash, first I flashed a 2.3.5 SBF
2) Flashed quarkx 26-feb nightly for defy+ (baseband EPU93_U_00.60.00)
3) Changed to a proper baseband with defy-baseband-switcher v4.0
3) Changed to baseband EPU_U_00.59.01 following steps mentioned in 1st page
4) Flashed softunlock 1.2 for EPU_U_00.59.01
5) Rebooted (still no sim change till this step)
6) Power off the phone and changed SIM
7) Rebooted
8) Almost had an orgasm
I'll be posting links i used later if somebody ask for them
Thanks to all people directly and indirectly involved (very special thanks to crakeron for his help)

I admit: I haven't tried this yet, but I did noticed that the OP says to replace init.mapphone_umts.rc to: /system/bootmenu/2nd-init/ and that your patch copies it to: /system/bootmenu/2nd-boot/ folder...
I'm could be wrong on this, but I believe that most people use 2nd-init boot by default (I've only used 2nd-boot while having ICS as dual boot before). But again; I'm just guessing here and could be totally wrong and it might make no difference...
Cheers, and btw, thanks for teaching me how to backup files [with a zip patch]

Hello, the file /system/bootmenu/2nd-init/init.mapphone_umts.rc provided did not work for me. It did not detect any SIM card.
So I edited the original file to defy me and I added the line "service bp-ptc /system/bin/bp_ptc" around line 194 (This can change depending on your file) after the line "user root" in the section "# Adb over Network"
After the copy on my smartphone with correct permissions, it worked.
If it can help

Guys please don't repost it as your own work, otherwise I'll report it and you will get banned from XDA.
NOTE: If you have previously used the old EXE to install TWRP then please remove the old folders by using these instructions using cmd before using updated exe to install TWRP;
1.
Code:
adb shell
2.
Code:
su
3.
Code:
mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock11 /system
4.
Code:
rm -R /system/bootmenu
Then use the updated exe to install TWRP.
NOTE: If you don't like TWRP, you can download Guitwo2's Permanent CWM at http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1875373&d=1365682716
Temporary CWM Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=1875299&d=1365680458
2nd-init does NOT work in CWM Recovery
Thanks to @Guitwo2 for CWM Recovery.
Instructions on how to install Permanent CWM Recovery:
1. Make sure stericson-busybox is installed
2. Put XT320_bootmenuV2.zip in the root of your sdcard
3. Reboot into fastboot mode by typing this command in cmd:
Code:
adb reboot bootloader
4. Then type this command in cmd:
Code:
fastboot boot recovery.img
5. Then use volume keys to navigate and power button to select option. Select install zip from sdcard, then select XT320_bootmenuV2.zip and select yes to install the zip file
6. Then reboot device by selecting reboot device now.
CWM 6 has a bug where it asks you to 'disable recovery flash' when you select reboot system now make sure you select NO or you will soft brick your device.
Changelog:
-v2 No need to mount /sdcard in CWM Recovery. Fixed TWRP installation issues.
-v2.0.1 Released an .exe version of script, to simplify installation
-v2.0.1.1 Fixed bootmenu.zip
This can install a custom recovery?
This can install a custom recovery?
Thank you
The root process worked for me. Now i can install link2sd and set up a swap partition.
I cant install TWRP and i think the reason is that the bat was having some problem to send that bootmenu.tar file to my sd card. I tried to send that file myself before starting the entire process and it didnt worked.
I took a picture of the error i'm getting . Thank you again, i was really mad about that low internal space xD
same problem... someone can fix it? please

Ok, I've made a fixed script here. The error was that the sdcard is a directory so it will refuse to push files into it.
Here's the updated script below. Just put the .bat file in the same place as the other files.
Thanks

Ty for the quickly answer.
Btw, my gsm network wasnt working after the root process. If the same thing happens to someone else, just do a master reset and it will work again.
pull command is working now
That sdcard copy part is working now. The TWRP process is still not working for me. I tried to do myself the commands using the adb interface and when i use the command to intall the tar, i got the message 'tar: no space left on device" . I hope you can help me with that and i'm sorry about all this questions xD .

You must have more than 5MB free in your /system partition. Please move your apps to the /flex partition or delete the useless apps in /system.

Yes but it sometimes gets unstable so you should overclock to 700MHz which is the highest I got without reboots. pll2_l_val=73 gives you 700MHz.

It worked for others but in your situation the only thing I can advise is to do a data wipe and relfash SBF file. Just go to Guitwo2's there to install permanent CWM.
