Contacts from phone, touchscreen dead. - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So my gf has had her evo screen die. I used my upgrade to get her a EVO 3d, but she stupidly didn't back up her contacts. She saved them all to the phone instead Google or exchange. I know sprint can typically get contacts out of there, but will they need the touchscreen to work to do so? The store is 45 minutes away so don't want to waste effort if it won't work....

I would think they could do it, but I suggest instead of taking the chance that they can't, try using ADB to do it. Set the phone to USB Debugging on and then do what the guy suggests in the link below:
http://www.droidxforums.com/forum/droid-x-rescue-squad/30987-acquire-contacts-via-adb.html

Oh, just thought about this... Make SURE you TELL them that there are contacts on the phone, cause they will just assume that because it's android that you use google to back them up... so be sure you tell them to at least try to do it...

I would do it over ADB, but I cant enable ADB without the touchscreen. I can get into fastboot, but thats it. The phone in on 4.24 and so I cant even try to use a RUU to get it back to stock and see if its a software vs. hardware issue. Its really annoying.

If it's a repair location, have them slap a screen on it real quick to get the contacts.

Well still can't get it to work. Erg. Guess time for a repair store.

Malware? UpgradeDroid.apk

So my wife was on her Evo when suddenly the browser opened and started downloading something called DroidSpeedUpgrade.apk. The website I traced and it gave me a forbidden 403 from my PC, but did allow me a DL of the apk from phone. I did not install, look at the crazy permissions! Any idea what this is, or how it opened on my wifes Evo (cm7)?
Thanks
Below is the APK, I wouldnt install it, screen shot is the permissions...
I would backup all apps [except that], then do a fresh re-install of CM7.

I would question if there's already a malware app on the phone if the browser automatically opened to that page.
Check through unfamiliar apps and the permissions associated with them.

That too is true, but hoping he did that already. Though either way, I firmly believe she should do a clean install again; at least go through the last 10 apps she installed, and like said, check the permissions.
If I were to wipe fully with a clean install of a rom, and not log in to Google or restore anything, what damage do you think this could do if I installed it out of curiosity?
I know it could get my phone number, info and whatnot. That alone would probably keep me from doing it... but what's the worst that you think it could do?
If I had an unactivated Android phone then I might do it.

Your curiosity is like mine, I am tempted to just install it, lol. See if the app can be found in app drawer or what, if I can do anything with it, and so on. My wife doesnt have any credit card junk stored on phone, but has a bank app, so that is all bad by itself! Wait, Amazon Market has credit card linked to it, so in theory they can get password and get credit card info from Amazon. On top of bank passwords, all bad! Maybe I am being paranoid, but this rouge apk seems to have to many permissions for it to just install like that.
I have a unactivated LG Optimus S here, I will install it on that and report my findings
edit...INSTALLED!!!
OK, it is just a Task Manager, on the outside that is. What it does is mask itself as a battery saver/task killer. Meanwhile it sends and recieves text messages that cost YOU $9.99 each! Says a minimum of one per week will be sent and or received. If works with either Sprint or Tmobile, according with terms and conditions, which are carefully hidden. For the average user its gonna fool them, the app by itself would not be so bad so one would think they got a awesome app. Meanwhile your Sprint bill is racking up $9.99 texts, I guess you can get them reversed by sprint. But if you have autopay set up it may take a bit to realize you bill payment was a couple hunderd over normal cost Just be on the lookout, the app may do more than what I found, I only scratched the surface of it.

It has permission to change your settings, so it could turn data back on. It can also read your phone information - phone number and such - so if it can send this information out then it can definitely do damage.
I wouldn't try it.

It also gives the user magic powers and allows the user to live forever. THIS is a must install. LMAO! However, I WOULD PERSONALLY *that is if I had time to do this* DECOMPILE THIS CRAP AND SEE WHO THE HELL MADE IT AND WHERE IT IS SENDING OUR INFORMATION TO. then, I would track the person down. and put a bullet in their head or heads. I don't play games with identity theft. oh and we all know the two places they are likely from. either china or Africa. Well, in Africa... I firmly believe most of them should all be put into a grave. :-D
Does this make me a bad person? nope... it sure doesn't. I'm protecting americans. Actually. the government does this on a daily basis. They murder hundreds of people over seas for oil. :-D We gotta have our oil. :-D lmao If they come over here, they are terrorists. If we go over there, we are terrorists. :-D as I just went way off subject...
okay okay. don't install it. final. and why would you install something that you know for a fact is a phone virus? How stupid is that? We need a platform that can tests apks OUT OF A REAL phone environment. like a virtual mobile computer like vmware.
okay, I'm done. bedtime!

[Q] To devs or anyone...please help!!!!

Here's the problem . My friend has an Stock Epic 4g and it eventually bit the dust. She can still access the download screen via 1+power buttons but other than that her phone won't turn on. Now, thats not the problem. I can fix that. The problem is that she had very important text messages in her phone and we're trying to see if there's a way to retrieve them before I "unbrick" her phone. has anyone found a way to pull info off the phone before undergoing restoration and deleting everything? I apologize in advance if the answer is already on here somewhere. I searched and came up with nothing in our forums except for the text message history viewer on sprints website that is no longer there and besidesm even if it was, these texts are from around christmas. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
I think you're pretty much stuck. I had the same problem once and never managed to get it working. If you can somehow make a backup of the messed up system that would be great. If the phone is stock, I don't think there's a way to do that.

no, there's not. I thought of that too. I was wondering if maybe i plug the phone into my computer maybe there's something that can take everything from the phone and copy it to my computer? or even just view the system folders in hopes that I can get the text messages that way but i dunno if that's even possible.
No. She's screwed. Tell her to back up next time.

OUCH! When I give people bad news I at least hand them a bottle of petroleum jelly first! Yes this is an attempt to make a very dry (or is that wet) joke! Sorry had to.
On topic I don't know if you can mount the system w/adb once it is in that state and k0nane would know more and if he is saying no I doubt it.
I am by no means an expert but... could you odin in the recovery, get into CWM, make a backup, extract the data image, pull the messaging data and then restore after getting the phone functional?

Wouldn't that just reflash the recovery partition? OP: Try this if you haven't just reOdin'ed yet. It wouldn't damage the messages any more than they already are.

That is what I was going for, just overwriting the recovery partition like you would for rooting GB. You could even try to bring it back to life by flashing a kernel and see if it would boot. Neither of those operations should delete data.

I agree with the above. Don't odin it, try reflashing the recovery partition, nandroid everything to sd, THEN unbrick, restore data.

Rooted ICS phone won't connect to computer

Unfortunately I cracked my screen today and can't access any of my phone's memory. I can't even see anything on the screen.
I should've started this thread earlier when I first encountered the problem but a little too late for that.
Well my issue is that I have a rooted and I believe it was a custom ICS rom that was based off the AT&T version when it just came out a little while ago. I can't connect to Kies and never could even with USB settings on the phone activated, and deactiaved.
It's kinda crappy that it can't even be recognized to even get my pictures without being forced to connect through Kies. Is there any other way to get it to connect?
I'll eventually get a screen replacement and do it myself since it costs about the same thru the stupid insurance and at least I'll get to keep all my data if I do it myself.
Damn, makes me miss my stupid iPhone sometimes...

OK so what u would need to do is make sure USB debugging is enabled, and if u can't see ur screen or access anything I'm afraid ur out of luck, that option needs to be enabled in order for the PC to connect, if it was enabled then make sure u have all the necessary drivers installed in ur PC, if both of those are good then idk, ur only other option is a replacement screen

Well bit the bullet and just bought a screen replacement. Luckily I was able to get it unlocked and got all the stuff off. Mainly most important was the pictures that I couldn't get back any other way.
Well to prevent this issue from ever occurring again, it would be wise of you to back up pictures using Google+ Photos.

Bybass standby-lock

Hello xda-members,
the touchscreen of my Sony Ericsson Xperia Play R800i is broken. The display's fine and clean but the touchscreen has to be repaired.
Well, i want a friend of my father to have a look on it, but he's in the holidays right now. So i have to wait 2 weeks.
Meanwhile I would like to use my Play anyways. Because it's working, its just the touchscreen that's not working. That means i could still do a lot with my Play, when only using the hardware buttons. The problem is, i can't bypass the "Standby-Lock" with the hardware buttons.
I'm not sure how that "Standby-Lock" is called, but i mean the one, where you simply have to put your finger on the lock image and draw it to the right side. Luckily, I don't have any security-lock with patterns enabled, just this typical standby-lock, that keeps you from accidently phoning someone or etc. while the phone is in your pocket. I guess you know what I mean.
So, to get to my question: Does anybody know a way, how to bypass this "Standby-Lock" with hardwarebuttons or with help of the computer and usb-cable or anything else, except the use of touchscreen?
I hope there is a way and you can help me. Because that would make these 2 weeks (or more) of waiting so much easier
Thank you in advance!
Jimmy F.
What I do is just slide out the Game-Pad and that seems to work, unless you disabled the Xperia Game Launcher from launching when you open the pad?

If I slide out the game pad, when I already opened the bypass-lock then the game launcher opens. but with locked standby mode it does not open, i still have to unlock it first.

Install it via pc and install another app to trigger the app to run.

I never installed a app via pc, so im telling here what I've done, in case I did something wrong. Firstly, I logged in with my Google Account via Pc and followed your link. Then I clicked on Install and it said the app will be shortly downloaded to my device. So I stared a couple of mins on my device, but nothing was happening. Then I installed some random solitaire app, how the instructions told, in order to trigger the app. Well, I clicked on install as well and it told me the app will be downloaded shortly to my device. I stared another couple of minutes on my device but nothing was happening. :/

It should have registered your device when you used the play store on your phone. Check its the right phone and try a reboot. In the description are the proper instructions. I think it runs on start up anyway.
Weird, its supposed to take over and a toast pops up say bypassed or something if you get there..

Ok so I shattered my screen. No big deal I have insurance. I got a new OG in like 2 days. The thing is the screen is not responsive at all. I mean I can pull the notification bar down but I cant select anything. I have like 42 text messages that I really want to read . Anyone have any ideas about how I might be able to get that stuff over to my new OG

^^^This would be the easiest option if you're familiar with opening devices.
If not, hopefully you've paired a bluetooth controller to your phone before. You could turn it on and use it to navigate through your phone and download an SMS backup app.
Worse case scenario, what MIGHT work is to buy a USB-OTG cable and hook up a controller to your device

try this. If you can get the app to open once then your all set.

Now if the phone had OTG support I'd say hook up a USB mouse and have at it but since it doesn't then you have no remote features which sucks in this case.
UPDATE!!!!!!
install this from the web play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/...xLDEwMiwiY29tLmFuZHJvaWRsb3N0Lmp1bXBzdGFydCJd
wait till it is installed or a couple minutes depending on connection speed.
then this from the web play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.androidlost
again wait for the install to complete.
now send a txt or call your phone then goto http://www.androidlost.com/ and hopefully you'll see the congratulations screen on the pc.
