I was thinking about buying a Desire Z so I can use it with AT&T 3G (850/1900 bands)
Does it matter which Desire Z I buy? I know it obviously cannot be the G2, but does it matter if it's the Bell version or a Canadian one.
Thanks for any help XDA!
P.S. If I got a Desire Z with AT&T 3G, I could use it with the dumb - fone unlimited da,ta plan right?
Well technically the Bell version is Canadian. But you need to get the A7275 model number, or Bell Canada version as you said. Only this model will work for AT&T.
Also, it's seems to be luck of the draw with the dumb phone unlimited data. Some say that they don't get caught because AT&T can't see what kind of phone it is because it isn't an AT&T phone. Others say that they get caught anyways. I don't think there is a definite answer to that one.
I believe there is also a UK version.. would that work with AT&T 3G?

Sorry for asking. Did i understood correctly, that T won't let you use 3G unless phone is purchased from them?

Tmo has a weird 3G frequency, and this phone's radio doesn't support it.

a nexus one is $530 and on contract there is a certain required plan that doesn't support family plans.
HTC desire and Tmobile
So if i understand it correctly,
Desire is NOT coming to T mobile for Sure ..
It will not work with T mobile frequencies, esp 3G network
which carrier will it work with ... better not AT&T
so basically no point of buying an unlocked phone then ..

It is rumored that AT&T will get the Desire. Wait it out until April-June. Also, if Telstra gets the Desire, AT&T customers can POSSIBLY import one and MAYBE catch 3G.
As far as "T" goes, I don't know if they will get the Desire since...well...there is the NX-1.
Either way, you will not be able to get 3G speed if you import the Desire. So if you want 3G, go with the Nexus. If not...go with the Desire
Does T-Mo UK have the same 3G frequencies and whatnot as T-Mo US? Because according to MoDaCo's webiste, T-Mo UK IS getting the Desire. So if T-Mo US doesn't, we could always import and throw in our sim cards :]

Oh, i just remembered... US does not use SI system either

The UK Desire wont work on US TMo 3G. Its radio only does 2100/900 and 2100 is what TMo UK uses. TMo US uses the 1700 frequency. Ironic that the Nexus 1 radio does 1700/2100/900 so it works on TMo UK 3G.

Gay t&t also has the nexus one so if it comes to the US hopefully it will be on T-Mobile
So...I am headed back to the U.S. permanently and wondering if there is a way to flash the radio to make it work on the U.S. 3G networks of either ATT or T-Mobile.... if not, no biggy...ill sell it and by a new one back home.
Thanks for any info you can give.
As far as I am aware mate as long as the desire has the capability of connecting to USA Phone Bands then it should just be a case of flashing the international ROM

That's the point - an A8181 doesn't support the 3G bands for any US GSM network. You would need an A8183 which at least works on AT&T, or a Nexus One on T-Mobile. If CDMA is your bag, your HTC choices are essentially the Evo on Sprint, or the Incredible on Verizon.
Regards,
Dave
guess you will be selling your desire then
So Word is the htc desire a8183 model supports at&t bands..
Any idea where I could find one for 550$ or less new?
Also does anyone run this on the 10$ dumb phone plan? if so how long?
Anything I absolutely need to know before grabbing it?

As far as I know the only place that HTC supplies a8183's to is Australia.
Take a look on eBay - you need one that either says Telstra or NextG (Telstra's 850 mhz mobile network name) or of course a8183. As for $550? You might be lucky - but the Australian dollar is worth almost the same as the US dollar at the moment so I think you might struggle to find a new one. Second hand maybe?
You forgot the TELUS desires which is the real nam version because it has 850/1900 umt bands, plus its cheaper than Telstra version
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App

Didn't know that about Telus - thx for the information.
EVERYTHING is cheaper than Telstra prices!
Hello fellas. I've been with my G2 for about a month now, awesome phone, but the thing is I only can use EDGE network and not 3G.
Since my carrier here in Venezuela is Movistar, which operates in these bands: 850, 1900 Mhz.
Is there anyway to make my T-Mobile G2 work with my local carrier? Thanks in advance for the help.
Yes --- check out the HUGE APN thread here.

you just need to find the right apn for your area...
No, the T-Mobile G2 is not compatible with those UMTS bands (it only uses 1700/2100). If you wanted 3G to work, you would need to get the Desire Z NAM instead (i.e., the Bell Canada version). Probably too late since you already have the phone, but maybe you can sell your G2 and pick up one of those instead?

Yes, I made some research and the only way I can enjoy 3G is if I get the DZ Us Version...
I mostly blame the carriers in this POS country, they're so behind in technology.
I'm trying to find a good phone for my GF and I need one that uses at&t bands for 3g
I saw this phones and it looks perfect for her... but I need to know which model has those bands...
can someone help me with this? please? =)
i think that by flashing an radio from bell from Canada it would do the trick BUT I'm not sure of it so it would be best for you to get an Desire HD/ Inspire 4G that it's more or less the same hardware just with no keyboard.
The thing is... I want it to have a keyboard =P

This won't work -- frequency support is set at the factory and cannot be changed. You need to actually get the Bell version of the Desire Z (model: A7275).

I'm gonna have to wait for that person to reply my question. =)
