Battery Maxes at 75% - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just got a refurbed (most likely) Epic via Assurion because I dropped my old one in the toilet. I assume the battery is brand new, and not refurbed (can you refurb a battery?)
Anyhow, my battery charges at about 1% every 10 minutes, it takes forever to charge. Also, overnight, my led will go blue and show 100% charged, as soon as I unplug, the phone says 75% charged. Spare Parts battery status also reports 75%... any ideas?
I'm running ACS 1.2 with twilight kernel.

Sounds like a bad flash and a battery in need of calibration. My battery charges at like 1% every 1.25 minutes or less. I was astounded.

I've done this same thing and every time the most i'll get is 98%.. No matter which way i try and recalibrate the battery it won't get past 98% with SFR (any version)

Charging the battery to 100% decreases the overall lifetime of it. Your battery/phone is perfectly fine.

Just curious what else you have flashed on your phone? I have this problem too after flashing a certain something and it's happened on 3 ROMS, all after flashing something. Now I unplug from overnight and it drops to around 85%, I plug back in and it goes to 100% but no blue LED. If I unplug at that point it stays at 100% like it should then does what it does.

The USB port on my phone is...fickle. Last night it kept vibrating from being plugged in/out/in/out. So I just unplugged it (cause I was half asleep). This morning I checked it and it said 74%. Got ready for work, checked it again and it had dropped to 7%. WTF. Guess it's time to reset the battery stats!

I'm running twilight kernel, ACS SRF 1.1 or whatever the latest is, and I flashed the 8 lockscreen mod bc I wanted the plain version of the puzzle, not the ACS version.
I think it was a charger/cord issue. I've used my old HTC Hero charger and cord for a while, but when I used the Samsung one last night, it charged all the way to 100%. Just took it off the HTC charger after 2.5 hours, and it charged all of 12 percent. Not sure why, but that seems to be it.
The 98% issue is pretty common and no big deal. It's just because Android sometimes turns the charge off once it hits 100, and doesn't turn the charge back on because it would just keep charging a battery 1%, on, off, on, off. Bad for battery. I knew the 75% deal wasn't related bc that's just too low, and it is still weird it was showing 100%.

HD7 never charges 100%

I have purchesed HD7 4 days ago. It never charges 100% even if i leave it on charge for whole night.
Any solution.
how do you know it doesn't? the battery icon isn't exactly specific? but if it doesn't, take it back to the store you bought it from.
The phone stops charging before 100%
Just like other phones it has battery indicator in the form of cell/battery.
It should appears filled/full when charging is full and as the battery drains it should gradually appears empty. Now the issue is that it never appears full. The extreme right side of the cell/battery always stays/shows empty.
In other words we can say that the phone stops charging before 100%.
Beside this the indicator works fine and the battery life is also ok.
I bought this phone in UK and currently working in dubai so I cannot take it back to the store.
This happened to me, for the past week+ (I bought the phone on 28th).
I don't know why but an Overnight Charge didn't seem to be long enough for it to charge fully, it was always nearly charged.
However, This morning it seems to have charged 100% so maybe it's just a matter of time? Maybe the battery isn't in sync or something when you first buy it.
Think the battery icon is a bit dodge. As long as you get the green indicator light you know it's fully charged. If it's still orange then still needs topping up.
I've not had a problem charging myself but what I have found is that sometime the indicator says it's nearly dead. Reboot and sudenly there is an increase in amount of battery left. Very odd.
Maybe you need to wait a few weeks just to let it settle.

That isn't acceptable for obvious reasons, so I hope that isn't the case.
P.S. 14-30 day return/exchange policies.
All right Dudes!
The problem is fixed. Simply fully charge your mobile phone and then full discharge till it turns off by its own. Repeat the procedure three times and you are done.
Good Luck
I have the same issue, if you turn the phone off and back on when the light turns green, the battery icon is then full.
So seems like a software issue to me.
My HD7 is going back tommorow anyway, keeps resetting itself and when trying to video in 720p it looses focus!
I previously went back to O2 store the day after i bought the phone about the original charging issue. They were going to swap the phone but then had no stock. Then my above issues topped it today so took it back and surprise surprise they were out of stock! Apparantly expecting a delivery tommorow but they don't know what they receive till they get it (BS i reckon) so if they don't have any in tommorow I'm getting a refund and going to go for a Venue Pro or just stick with WM 6.5..

How do you "full discharge" the phone? Use it until the battery is complete dead and charge it up again x3?
Yes, use it till battery is fully dead and charge till charging light turns green.
That never worked for me either, infact last night when the phone was flat, I have left it on charge over night and it went green, but showing about 50% charge, turned it off and back on and its then full.
My phone is doing this as well, now. Charges to full on teh charger. Take it off, adn it goes straight to 75% charge - viewable in the Battery Saver by battery level. It's impossible to charge it fully, and battery life is TTEERRRRIIBBLLEE.
Either something is wrong with the phone or firmware, or the OS. Not sure. But I can't use the phone like this. It's as if it has a 920 mAh battery in it. Obviously that shouldn't require anymore explanation.
---------- Post added at 11:25 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:14 AM ----------
Follow-Up: I'm convinced it's a bug in the WP7 OS. When you charge to full, and take it off the charger, it instantly drops to 75%, then if you put it back on the charger 20 minutes later it goes to 93%?!
Problem is, the OS is set to shut down service, etc. when battery power is low (even beyond the battery saver setting, IIRC), so the bad information the OS has can hamper usability. It's basically cutting 2 hours off your battery life when you unplug the phone after a full night/day's charge.

Charge on the wall charger, not PC USB.

Evo not charging,or taking very long to charge

Ever since I flashed Ultimate Droids Rom my battery has started to take alot longer to charge. I throw it on the charger at 6%, and check half an hour later to see that its gone up maybe 1% or none!
I've tried to nandroid to past Roms that haven't had this problem but they all seem to be the same.
Could it be my Evo,or my Battery?,
Sent from my HTC EVO
It might not be your battery nor your phone. It might just be the rom you put. take it off and then see if your battery improves. If you know someone who has an evo, maybe an incredible since it uses the same battery try putting theirs in and see if it makes a difference. That way it will save you some time from completely restoring the rom.
Okay I'm pissed off. I took my phone off this morning at 28% ,so I throw it on the charger turned OFF,30 minutes later 8% l
WTF is happening!?
Sent from my HTC EVO
You are being punished for being a bad person.
Lol, seriously, my guess is any number of things:
1) Check to make sure your red charging light comes on when you plug in.
2) Make sure your charger isn't plugged into a socket controlled by a lightswitch you have turned off.
3) Make sure there are no micro-breaks in your charging cord's casing that would be causing a short (this happened to me - got new charging cord, problem solved).
4) Make sure your charger is rated at at least 5 volt / 800 ma.
5) Your usb port may have gone bad.
6) Go into Clockwork Recovery and clear your battery stats under "Advanced Options".
7) Your battery is cooked (happens - hardware breaks).
8) It could just be a coincidence that this is happening to you after you flashed UD. I was just over at their forum and this doesn't seem to be a common problem.
I have an EVO and am running the UD 12/3 nightly and it is flawless. 2.3 was a bit buggy. The new nightly is better.
same problem
Has any one figured out what's the problem with EVO and the battery charging situation? A couple weeks ago I noticed my battery wasn't charging, I turned the phone off and on then it would charge...now it won't charge at all WTF? I got a red light indicating my phone is plugged in, I got a thunder bolt in the battery window indicating charging, but the green bar is not moving while charging anymore. If I unplug the phone it will shut down. ANY AND SUGGESTIONS ARE WELCOMED...THANKS IN ADVANCE
EVO not charging fully and draining fast
Okay, here's my deal. My friend and I both have EVO's. We both are running Vaelpaks 3.1 rom. We both have the Battery Monitor Widget. When I charge my battery, it charges to 100% and 0mA. When my friend charges his phone, it reads 100% but the mA is not going to 0mA. Instaead it bounces between 64mA (red) or 252 mA (green). When he unplugs the phone, it drops 10% within minutes and continues to drop at a much faster rate than my phone.
Here's the kicker, when I pull his battery out of his phone and charge it in my phone, it charges to 100% and 0mA. then we put it back in his phone and it works great, until he charges it again. It charges the same way regardless of the rom we run. We have loaded Manilla Carbon by xxbabiboi228xx, VaelPak 3.1 and even stock and his phone won't charge to completion and drains quickly. Also, we are both rooted with Urevoked. We may switch to S on and see about switching the phone with Sprint unlees anyone has some sort of idea about whats going on with his phone. It may have something to do with the Hardware Version through settings/About Phone. My hardware version is 0003 and his is 0002. Thanks
you guys running the same kernel too?

It's the kernel, when your battery reaches 100% its supposed to stop charging but SBC kernels will continue to trickle charge. Li-ions aren't supposed to be trickle charged so they will wear out much quicker and possibly become unstable.

[Q] Phone Charging Question

Problem:
I have been reading as many posts as possible but I haven't come across my exact situation. I apologize if this is posted elsewhere.
I am running a rooted Dinc using CyanogenMod 7.0.3. If I charge the phone while it's powered on, the amber led turns green as soon as the battery indicator hits 100%. However, recently I've noticed that if the battery is close to being full, say 90%, and i power it off to charge it, it actually takes longer for the amber led to turn green. It might take 20-30 minutes longer.
I've also noticed the amber light turn green when the indicator only showed 92%. In trying something different I also noticed that if I charge the phone while it's powered on, then turn the phone off, the led goes amber and takes another 20 minutes to turn green again (I might be accidentally bump charging in this example but I'm not sure).
Attempted Solution:
I've read that a battery recalibration might help. I tried one method that requires the battery to be pulled after a full charge, but my phone won't boot while plugged into the wall if there's no battery. Then I tried booting into recovery, where I found an option to reset the battery stats... which I just did about 5 minutes ago.
I'm going to see how things go tomorrow, but is this normal? Has anyone else experienced these things? Thanks.

The kernel and the hardware charge it in different ways. That's why there are differences. DInc is famous for ending charging before the battery reads full. There's already a thread on that. there's not much point in getting hung up on how that thing charges. Be glad yours isn't like mine; a battery that discharges faster than it charges. Seriously.

Before I had a fast charge kernel (thanks Chad!) Using GPS with the stock VZW car charger, my battery would go down while it was on the charger!
Sent from my ADR6300 using XDA App
On AOSP roms, the LED will turn green at 90% and charge slower from 90%-100%. Perfectly normal, and I think on any rom it will charge slowly from 90%-100% to protect the battery.
The battery will charge further when you turn the phone off, what you described is what's known as bump charging. If you do this, you should notice a slower drop from 100%-90% than usual, because the battery is charged to a "true" 100%. When the phone is on and charging (above 90%), it simply keeps the battery above 90% even if it says it's fully charged, and this is why the inc is notorious for the quick 100%-90% drop.
If you do a bump charge and then clear the battery stats and use the battery calibration app will you need to bump charge again or will it know what the true 100% capacity is and keep the droid lasting longer. Not noticing much of a diffrence when i went from 1300 battery to a 1500. May get a bigger batter that'll fit the stock battery door cause I'm trying to get the best battery life i can get.
Thanks guys, I appreciate the help. I think something else that has thrown me off is that before I rooted the phone I wasn't able to see the actual battery percentage in numbers... all I could see was the battery icon. Things are now making more sense.
After recalibrating my battery I bump charged the other day and I was able to get almost 2 days out of my phone on light usage. Without bumping, I was able to end my day yesterday at 50% under my normal usage. Which is a noticeable improvement. Normally I end the day with about 10-20%. The big test will be once I go back to work next week. The cell reception is real spotty in my classroom, which I know makes the cell radio work harder.
Thanks again.
I found a lot of answers I was having about battery charging in this thread:
Your battery gauge is lying to you (and it's not such a bad thing)

Bad battery, wake issue or usb port/cable?

So after some time I've been battling with my battery life through the day. Few months back it was great, Id easily get a day no problem! Then I found I had a wakelock issue and had that fixed.
I now suddenly have almost multiple things going on at once but first a small back story.
Went to bed one night and had it plugged into the wall. Went to bed at 60% and woke up and my phone was down to 6%. I thought, well the usb port is bad or the cable. Took it into the sprint store, they of course say "it looks like its charging just fine, the light is coming on" (the light was on during the night too).
They checked the battery and they said it was bad. Im wanting to take it to another store and have them check, because either: they didnt want to replace me with a new phone or replace the usb port if thats bad.
1) Bad battery- in a matter of 30minutes (during my lunch break at work) my battery dropped from 63% to 14%- only used 3g for facebook and sent 2 text messages. And my phone is undervolted and underclocked
2) Possible bad usb port- I plug my phone in all day at work, and 90% of the time the screen is off. The % of the battery doesnt increase, but maybe decreases slightly (I have data and everything turned off while at work because I get no data signal).
3) wakelock- so suddenly I'm getting a huge percentage of system usage of 54% in my battery stats. A few months back it was maybe 1%? I flashed the .img that sets the wimax, PRI, NV, etc to what fixed the issue back then. Im just confused how this has come back now when I havent even updated anything related only my rom (MIUI 1.8.26).
So I've ordered 2 2000mah batteries off ebay- I wasnt going to pay $40 from a battery story across from the sprint store (as they didnt have any stock, only extended batteries).
If anyone has had a similar experience, or would know what is the culprit would love to get feedback. Hopefully I can get this fixed soon. Maybe just a trial and error.
Something really strange just happened. I checked my phone just now and the battery is at 98% and just maybe 30minutes earlier it shut off because of low battery
What I explained before about using my phone on my lunch break was only 2 hours ago and showed 16%.
I always wipe my battery states when I update my ROM or install a new kernal.

Don't wipe battery stats if you don't have a full battery, it'll keep your battery from charging fully.
It may be the battery, but since you're getting new batteries you'll know then. If you didn't get an external charger, I'd suggest doing so. That way you can guarantee that your extended batteries get a full charge, and you can switch out a dead battery with a fully charged one if you keep having problems. The usb port on the Evo is crappy anyway, but if the light comes on and stays on & you can transfer data through the usb port then I doubt that's the problem.
It could be hardware failure, but wait until you get a new battery and have properly calibrated to come to that conclusion.
In the meantime download Battery Monitor Widget, that should show you your true battery capacity even if the system will not. You don't have to use the widget, you can just open the app. Once you see that your battery is fully charged, calibrate your battery properly. Wipe battery stats at 100%, let it drain until it shuts off, charge to 100% without breaks, and you should be good to go.
Good luck!

Thanks for that!
I just bought a battery from BB to hold me over (50$ for a 1750mah battery?! )
when it charges to 100%, should I go into recovery, or use battery calibrator (app)?
Ill install that battery monitor too
BMW has the feature to wipe stats. I also recomend to look at the reports and judge when the battery is full by looking at mV. 4200mV is full charge. Then wipe stats FIRST, then unplug and run down completely, then recharge fully with out unplugging.
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
Ya just noticed BMW had that feature. Forgot I had a menu button. LOL!
This battery I got at BB is a "1750mah".
You know what I realized what might be the issue? Back a few weeks ago, I bought an extended battery to use to take videos at a concert. At that point I wiped the battery stats at 100% of the 2500mah or so battery..

Charging problem! slow or no charge..

ok, over the last week or so ive had this issue, gradually getting worse...
my battery will charge to around 40-45% and then charging will slow right down.
two hours later, it will be on around 50% if im lucky, and about 3 more further hours before i hit 60% (this is some of the time, other times, it just remains on its current charge%)
if i leave it overnight for about 10hours or so, highest it goes to now is about 73%, but this is rare, usually 45-50%ish.
ive tested with htc ac wall charger, htc usb, blackberry charger, car charger and a random microusb wallcharger. all have same issue.
when tested with two friends desire hd's on different days, my battery charged perfectly, and at the normal gradient speed over the % range. and my phone reads it correctly at the 100%-98% when back in my phone after change back.
i thought it was down to my phone, just dont know if its rom or hardware. shud i factory restore, or claim on insurance?
i have another issue here...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=18480603&posted=1#post18480603
which also applies to the question of restore or insurance...
thanks
What Rom are you using, i am using runny 2.2 only 62% charge in 6 hours
9 hours later on battery only upto 68% i have amazing battery life now
i'm using runny 2.2.....left it on charge for 2 hours with phone on, but wifi and everything off and it had only gone up 2% ! !
Turned phone off and plugged in charger, 30 mins later, only went up 1% ! !
72% charge at this point.
So took it off charge, put it in my pocket, went upstairs to bed, turned it on to set alarm and it said 100% on battery....weird!!
matt
Lol this is an issue with calibration. The battery is charging but the software doesnt report it.
You have to charge the phone for as long as possible so you know it is on 100% whether the software says it or not, go into CWM, wipe the battery stats and then let the battery drain fully until it shuts down by itself. Then plug it in and leave it until you know for certain it is at 100%. If the green light comes on leave it for an additional half an hour. Then it will be fixed.
ive only recently got this handset, as last one was replaced on insurance a month or so ago, and its runuing on stock rom with latest updates....?
