hi all
once i charged my battery after its 15% low battery alarm (it took about 2.5 hours) i started to play angry birds seasons! paired with my mw600 for the sound
after 75 minutes i checked my battery and it said 62%!!!!
damn! one hour gaming and 40% battery loss? was it due too Bluetooth?
next morning. after i got up (9 hours later), i saw the low battery alert!!!!
i saw "battery use" and it said that there was an angry bird consuming 22% !!!
but neither my advanced task killer nor "running services" showed any angry birds program running!
today after recharging my phone, i played the same angry bird seasons with the speakers of the phone (middle sound volume) and after 30 minutes, i lost 15% loss of the battery and again after closing the game, in battery use section, i say angry birds consuming 16% of battery when again it wasn't listed in "running services" section!
i even restarted my phone and to my utter surprise, i saw this program running in battery use section again!
I'm really disappointed about this issue
all this time my wifi has been switched off!
i have 2 questions!
1. from where does this running service come? why isn't it listed under runing services?
2. is this rate of battery use normal?

Ok. Let me explain.
First of all, Games take up lot of battery power. They use display, CPU, RAM, GPU and whatever you call them else. So it's quite normal to see that kind of battery usage when you play the quality graphical games.
Second to your battery utilization issue. Again, this is not an issue, but Android lists the utilization based on the top to bottom. So your Angry birds game was the topper of them all. Hence it's displayed there. It doesn't mean that it is running.
Hope you get it clear now.

thanks mate
but what caused my battery to drain like hell?
2-3% in every 10 minutes!!!!
the only way i could make sure if it had anything to do with angry birds was uninstalling it...and everything went OK again!
i have no experience with angry birds, could it be a bug?
i saw the same problem in other forums...without any specific answer!
do u know what caused my battery to drain from 60% to 15% in 9 hours? with Bluetooth off, wifi off, system complete standby! isn't it just too weird?

I'm not sure of your issue, but what I'm sure of is that games drains battery pretty fast.
For my case, my Arc sometimes holds the battery pretty well, but sometimes it looses like hell. In any case, I never had more than 14 hours of my normal usage.
I did noticed some " zombie" games/apps will keep re-start even after you had exited and/or killed them, I had to kill them a number of times before they stop re-starting. This is where apps like task killer becomes usefull. I use advance task killer to automatically kill unwanted apps, just make sure you config it to ignore all the "system" and any apps you want to run in the the background. FYI My battery usually lasts more than 24 hr, but I charge it just before going to bed every night.
A few pointers.
1. Using anything which keeps the massive 4.2" display on will use a lot of battery. You could reduce the screen brightness as far as you can stand for gaming. That will help
2. Gaming uses the processor and the GPU and 3D processing a lot.. which also drains the battery fast.
3. The Battery stats show what has USED the battery so far.. it bares no relation to currently running processes.
4. Something else is causing your battery to drain whilst in standby mode - if you're not seeing it in battery stats then it's probably the 2G/3G data connection.. There's 2 things you could do about this.. A) Switch mobile data off when you go to bed B) Download something like Green Power Free or Juice Defender to manage your data connection more efficiently.
Hope this helps.

On my Desire when I went to check what was using my battery the most it showed the Android system is using 91% of it...anyway to decrease it? Or whats causing it to be so high? I've got no apps running in the background or anything other than weather and stuff. I've got everything to be sync manually other than the weather.
Your battery is going to get used no matter what. Most of the time your phone isn't doing anything so it stands to reason that the system sitting idle will use the most battery power. If you played a video on repeat for a couple of hours , that would use up the battery instead...

perhaps you dont understand, at that particular point out of 100% battery usage 91% goes to the system which sounds right to me as you said all other programs are not running.... another example its just like having a fan , a computer and a microwave... if he pc was off and the fan was running....at the point 100% of electricity usage would go to the fan but if yoy switch on sometging else..then the % changes...
Thanks everyone1

No because that is why their is a category for cell standby and phone idle....
If you optimise your phone settings, you will get...
15h 28m 23s since unplugged
cell standby 38%
phone idle 37%
android system 12%
Obviously with heavy usage then you'll find that android system is higher, however generally if you spend less time using it and more time that it is on idle then android system will be less than cell standy and phone idle.
P.S: This is with background syncing on every hour.
Wow - great thread necromancy!

Bit territorial over the forum much?
Not that it is your business but I just got a Android phone and I wanted to clairfy for people who, like me, had to research how to get the best usage out of the battery.
Maybe stick to the topic of the forum posts rather than telling people what to do?
I think so.
Kindest regards,
Stephen.

That's great info Stephen! My optimus 3d is running at 70+% android system after sitting idle for 6 hours ... and then after 30 mins of internet / Google+/Facebook Its about the same... even display is only at 4% and Idle is low too.
Any suggestions of what system tweaks will improve my battery life!? :-/ I just downloaded System panel in the hope it will help too!
Biggest drain in battery is network usage, so just make your apps sync less often, enable the power control widget and toggle network data on/off when you don't need it.
Screen is the biggest consumer hands down. If your radio fits well with your carrier you would get less than a 1%/hour with some apps syncing. And Google maps somehow is the devil itself in 2.3 if Latitude is enabled.
Nice thread revival btw
Hi all,
I got my HTC desire recently about 4 days ago. I noticed that the temperature of the phone gets pretty hot when i'm playing around with the phone (downloading apps and games).
I just found out about the *#*#4636#*#* commmand which allows us to check the battery temperature. After switching off the phone the whole night (about 12-14hours), the phone temperature is 31.8 degrees C on startup. Would like to find out if this is normal? It seems high as it's just on startup and I havent done anything with the phone.
Battery history: "Other usage" and "since last unplugged", Running 71%, Screen On 50.6% and Phone on 0.3% - These are the figures on my phone as I am typing, and I havent done much with the phone except to check these figures.
Battery history: "Partial wake usage" and "since last unplugged", UID10003 is the highest (about 1/4 bar) followed by calendar (about 10% of the bar) and android system (<10%). Does anyone know what is UID10003?
Also can anyone recommend a guide to maximizing battery power? (What apps should I download or what settings should I change) As yet I havent done much with the phone in the past few days except to download some games and whatsapp. I find that battery life seems to drain quite fast and I'm not a heavy user. I may play games but it's only for around ten to 15 mins. Also i havent done any calling. But batt life is less than 1 day.
Well the battery temp is just fine had mine at 50.5 degrees once lol

Mine is less then one day eiter but because of the heavy ussage i am preety satisfied !
Ps : my battery is between 38 and 34 ... so i guess yours is ok ... it allways depends on the usage of the phone
When you say apps/software that will all depend on whether you phone is rooted. I use SetCpu and have changed a failsafe profile so if the temp goes over 47c it will lower the CPU frequencey to help reduce temp, but like I say it depends if you're phones rooted cost if not that wont help! Your temp sounds about right to me tho, have you tried Googling the UID?
Apparently, the battery life and the low internal memory are some major drawbacks of this otherwise great handset, so I though of putting up some experiences of what users report from their experiences with internal memory and battery life.
(After installing all programs and under normal usage)
ROM:
System 260MB => 32MB free
Data: 150MB =>32.7 free
Strategy: rooted, uninstalled htc stuff.
Battery Life:
24-36 hours
Remarks:
I feel the battery behaves rather strange, think there is definitively room for improvement. Some days, it hardly uses 5% over 12 hours!! Then, on others, without touching it, it looses over 50%!!
I am currently playing around with the Network settings and will see what I find.
Underclocking on demand should further alleviate the problem I hope!
With the original WF I easily got 4-5 days and the battery is only marginally smaller so should be possible to get closer to this range
Here my results:
About 50 MB free of ROM.
About 100 MB free of RAM.
Stock ROM, S-ON (waiting for htc unlock and cyanogenmod)
Battery lasts under normal usage 2 days, light usage 3 days. (When i sleep phone is in fly mode and there's no battery drain)
Normal usage: little browsing, messaging, mailing, music listening, checking news and weather, maybe a phone call.
Light usage: messaging, mailing, a bit music listening, calendar checking, very very little browsing
The biggest battery drain is the screen, especially when playing games (15 minutes dragon fly gives 10 % battery drain) and browsing, market checking/updating.
Everything stock:
free ROM: 47
free RAM: 122
Around 2 days battery use if I don't play too much Airport Mania 2, or else 10 minutes play equals minus 5% battery
UPDATE:
I changed some settings to maximize battery performance, notable
Location => Disable "Use Wireless Networks" (battery eater!!)
Wifi&Networks: Mobile Network Settings:
Network Mode: GSM only (OK I don'T need the fast one)
Enable Always-On: DISABLED
Plus I set it on Flight Mode during night (I used Gentle Alarm to do it before, but apparently there is a bug where it makes it consume engergy nevertheless so do it manually now for the moment)
Results:
For now, 3-4 days!
Will continue trying out (but now it will take a week or two to finish some cycles ;-) )
RAM : 241 free / 160 used
ROM : 70 free / 80 used
Cyanogenmod 7 / 1500mAh HD7 battery
1,5-2 days with fully wifi opened.
Sure you can kill 3G, WiFi etc but then why have smartphone and dumb it down?
Here are a few battery saving tips I've learned from owning a GSM Hero and Desire HD (my gf has WFS which is why I'm lurking here... just ordered a XTC Clip for it).
Unfortunately when the green light says you're phone is fully charged this isn't always the case. The battery is likely to be mis-reporting its capacity and % used, this can cause your phone to die when the battery still has remaining charge. So, we're going to fix that.
Assuming you have already rooted your phone, download Battery Calibration tool and CurrentWidget.
Place a CurrentWidget widget on your home screen and charge your phone until the widget says 0mA. This means it has reached fully capacity.
Once it hits 0mA on the widget, open Battery Calibration and wipe battery stats.
Reboot your phone whilst still plugged in and upon reboot it will recreate a new battery stats file, however now it will know the battery's max capacity and will correctly report battery % used.
I do this about twice a week. Maybe once a month I will also let it completely die and then fully recharge whilst off, before powering on and repeating the above steps.
Other things you can do to increase battery life are:
Change the sync interval of apps like Facebook, Weather etc. I usually set most things to every 3 or 4 hours, with Flickr only being once a day.
Don't run the screen at full brightness if you don't need it. On my DHD I find 40% to be best for most conditions, with only really bright sun making it hard to read... in which case I bump it up to around 75%. Auto-brightness if ok but it tends to be on the bright side on most Sense ROMs so hopefully someone will work out a way to tweak the values for WFS. I had a play about with custom values on DHD but after testing for a while I still prefer to control it manually. It's a personal thing though.
Remove crap you don't need. Stocks, News, eReader, Twitter etc are always the first to go when I install a new ROM. I use Root Explorer to delete them but there are various ways to do this including Titanium Back-up or by using ADB. You can find everything in /data/app & /system/app. Just be sure to do a nandroid backup in case you delete any system critical apks.
Change Wifi sleep policy to Never.
Limit your homescreen widgets to only ones you really need. Having 7 screens packed with widgets and apps will cause battery drain.
Turn off Power Saving mode. I tend to find it doesn't really help and just makes your phone quite useless when you hit the pre-set % where it activates.
Never use Task Killers. This link gives an excellent explanation.
Finally, wait in hope for an overclocked and undervolted kernel, different radios and custom auto-brightness values
If I can think of anything else I'll post it here
don´t know why so mutch people get worried about the battery. for me the only thing that counts is that the battry takes me over the day. i mean i go out an seven am and get bat at 5pm, so thats the time i need my battery to hold. maybe i need some backup to get until 22 pm and everything is alright.
for me i doesnt matter if i´ve to recarge after one day
Yeah, for some people it can become a bit of an obsession. However, it still think it's worth taking a few simple steps to get the best out of your device
For some people 8 hours between charges is fine. For me, I like a phone that can run for 8 hours between charges, but also run for 48 hours between charges (without having to go to dead mode by turning on airplane). I go camping, stay the night someplace else, forget my charger while going on a trip or just want the freedom of not having to find an outlet and drag my charger with me if I want to have a phone run for more than 8 hours. So I get off work, change my clothing and run out the door to my after-work sporting event, then head out for a few beers afterwards with the team and I barely have enough juice left to call my wife or check on a few game scores.
It's important. Not having it be important means your phone is running your life or you just always have the same routine, which is fine for you maybe but I like to head out.
About 7 hours running CM 7. Battery life is very bad at the moment.
I've been an owner of the Samsung galaxy s 2 since may from a nexus one which I had for two years...
Since I got this phone, noticed I've been having issues with the battery life on this phone. If I unplug from full charge at like 2pm, and use it, I wouldn't say a lot but not like not at all, the battery would be dead before midnight. That's a battery life of less than 10 hours.... that sucks...
My data is usually on most of the time considering I have 5gb and can't use it all... I tether near end of bill cycle to use it up... lol
GPS is rarely ever on... Bluetooth is only turned on when I plan to use my plantronics voyager pro bt headset
I look at my advanced task killer,, on avg of 15+ things are open, 1/2 of which I don't use or touch....
Any way to improve on the battery life without rooting/custom rom?.?

Well i got my battery to last 17+ hours on average. Granted yes i am running a custom ROM, but you should be able to hit pretty close to that. I had to teach myself about wakelocks and installed and used a combo of GSam Battery Monitor, Better Battery Stats and a CPU Spy.
I have a drop of 5% for 3 hours last i really tracked it. Since you don't want to root....you cannot use better battery stats which shows you more in depth what is keeping your phone awake. But luckily GSam Battery Monitor can see wakelocks too, just not in depth. then use CPU spy to see how often the phone goes into deep sleep. GSam can also show you what apps (like Facebook) is constantly running.
What i noticed is you save alot of battery by putting everything on manual sync and turning Google sync off. Put phone screen brightness down to 20-40% ( don't always need it at 100%). BTW Bluetooth does kill alot of battery
Don't use task killers, 99% of everything shown is task killers are active processes, if you kill those tasks.....they will restart and waste battery trying to restart. you can only stop those from running when you are rooted.
The phone gets super hot around the rear camera area. Im using battery monitor widget and it drains about 30%/per hour which is crazy. This only happens when I play games like angry birds or osmos. Am I running too many apps in the background? I just wiped battery stats and let it drain to 0 and charged it full back to 100.
Screen on plus heavy CPU usage will chew up your battery. Not much you can do about that.

Sadly, that is typical modern smartphone behaviour.
and the cpu is up there, near the camera. thats why its that area that gets hot.
Ok thnx. Does your Nexus's do this too?
I was having the same issue which prompted me to look into ways to keep it from happening. I've tried a few different kernels and various undervolting / over clocking settings.
The majorly discernable change for me came with trying Jame Bond kernel v3.4 ( I think ), which is by default a battery saver on my device and by association keeps my device from getting so hot.
Look into conserving as much battery as you can. Toggle LTE and GPS off before you play a game, stop syncing in the background too. All that little stuff seems to add up quickly for me.

Turn 3G off when you game. It makes the phone heat like crazy for me and makes my battery life suck.
I've noticed jellybean has reduced the heat from under the camera while gaming. On ICS it used to be really hot now its warm but not hot.

I faced the same problem and especially when i played games. Also it was a new development which i noticed almost 2 weeks back. After much research I checked my phone status and battery status and found the culprit to be the "hotmail app" which i had installed after the launch of outlook.com. Battery status showed it to be eating 40% of batter power. I realized the CPU hot issue and the choppy games issue surfaced after i had installed hotmail.
Now I have removed hotmail app and everything is back to normal. Do let me know if you have hotmail app. If not then there is something running in the background that's eating a lot of power and memory in the background.
