[Q] BBC Websites - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Can anyone access flash content on any BBC website using a rom based on sense 2.1 + 3.0. I have tried numerous but none of them work on my phone. All i get is a blank screen where the content should be?

Videos in BBC "most watched" all play fine for me - I assume they are Flash.

Pretty obvious I know, but I take it you are in the UK? BBC blocks content to non-UK IP addresses - I'm sure you know this already, but just in case...

Lol. Sorry I am in the UK. I can get it to work on old sense roms no problem with stock browser and dolphin but no go on the newer sense stuff.
It may be that the BBC is not recognising my location. But I don't even get a message about being in the UK. Frustrating!

Uploads Via Browser - Possible?

I have found myself looking for work and am using my Desire when and where I can to apply for jobs. However, one problem I am facing is that I cant upload my CV to job sites using my fone. I have put my CV on my memory card and was hoping that I could upload it like a PC. Instead, I just see "Uploads Disabled". Is there any app or anything I can do to enable Uploads?. I have changed the browser to "full internet", instead of "mobi" in the settings menu.

Try a different browser
Nope. Will be possible when (if) we get upgraded to Froyo.
It's in Froyo? thats great news. I like the default browser, but this is the one problem/issue I have with it. Cannot upload files on forums due to no system browser. I don't like the other browsers.
I came across the same dilemma a few days back. Sadly, there was no real fix and the only alternative currently was to use the Dropbox Android app (which doesn't work well and is very limited). It worked for me due to my focus being on multimedia. It doesn't handle text files and it doesn't allow a direct file upload through it to elsewhere. You do get the option to provide a direct download link to a file you uploaded though.

are there any news on this ???? is froyo bringing uploads to default apps????
I am running the Defrost rom on my Desire and I was able to upload a photo to my tumblr account using the web page form, so it seems it is working in Froyo.
try uploading something to rapidshare...like a zip file....if you can it's fixed then

Does beebplayer still stream live TV

I've just managed to find a beebplayer apk. & installed it without issues but I can't seem to get the live streaming to work.
Would I be right in guessing this is because the app is no longer getting development support or is it because I'm on Orange? I just read on the internet beebplayer didn't work streaming on Orange. But that can't be right can it?

Ive not been able to have it working for a while... BBC are working on there own offical app. But no idea when its out.
No, it doesn't and is no longer developed.
I guess the Beeb put the pressure on.
iPlayer is supposed to be coming, many comments about it being in time for the world cup, but that hasn't happened.

[Q] web pages crashes stock browser!

Hi,
This is really weird.
This particular page:
h*t*tp://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/eng_prem/8906329.stm
(obviously without the *'s!) crashes my stock browser. I am running OD 3.2.1 but had same issue with 3.1.1.
Only that page so far, that I can remember.
Rest of BBC news website, Iplayer etc works fine.. Just that one page.
No FC errors, the page just disappears from screen and end up @ home screen. Browser process is no longer open.
reboot and clear dalvik cache no help. Also cleared browser cache and config, but no cigar.
Anyone else having issues?
thanks
I'm glad I'm not the only one! This is happening to me too - I first noticed the problem on exactly the same page last night when trying to check the football scores.
I thought nothing of it at first, but then today noticed pretty much all the BBC Sport Football team pages had much the same effect. The majority of the page is displayed, and just before completion the screen goes blank and takes me back to the home page. When I restart the browser, it defaults to the home page.
I too tried clearing the cache, cookies, history etc. but this didn't help. What I did notice however is that switching the "Enable plug-ins" Setting in the browser from "Always on" to "On demand" stopped the problem occurring - but I consider that a workaround, and not a fix.
At the moment I'm guessing it may be something to do with Flash on the BBC Sport pages. I'm not sure what's changed though - as I never had this problem before, and I've not (yet) had this problem elsewhere.
I'm using stock Froyo 2.2 on an unbranded Orange handset.
I too would appreciate any input on this one - but will also try searching a few more threads to see if this has been reported elsewhere.
Matt
Thanks fo the "on demand" tip..
That seems to have sorted that page.
Something is certainly fishy.
Iplayer is now telling me that it doesnt support my browser.
I had to change the user agent to Iphone (I'll need to wash my mouth now)
to get it to work.

BBC iPlayer seems fine for me - but most pages on the BBC Football site seem to crash the browser.
I found some mention of similar issues on another forum - but with the Evo 4G. In those cases there appeared to be 2 fixes suggested, neither of which appeal.
The first was to download an Adobe Flash 10.1 APK file, but this didn't seem to work for everyone, and I think it unlikely that will be a more recent one than the one we've just received with the Froyo update.
The second option was to do a factory reset and start over.
I'm not about to rush into either of these - although if I can find a version of the Adobe flash player that's definitely newer than the one we have, I may try that.
EDIT: I found the updated flash player APK on another XDA board here. This was version 10.1.92.8 (as opposed to 10.1.72.7 on the phone). It didn't make any difference for me, so I uninstalled it again.
Thought it was the news app playing up again as mine does this when going to some BBC pages from the news app, I hope the BBC fix it.

Glad its not just me. Seems like any page on the bbc news site crashes my browser. I am using Leedroid v1.9 rom (crashed on Leedroid v1.8 too).

[Q] Webpage check

Hi, sorry to be a pain straight away on my first post but could someone in the UK check the following webpage on their Desire?
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-suffolk-11008584
I'm asking because I recently upgraded the Flash Beta to the full program and this page crashes back to home screen every time. Uninstalling the Flash upgrade does not fix the issue.
Many thanks.....

You linked in a format that is different to how FroYo does it (incomplete), so it looks like you're still on an Android 2.1 ROM ?
I'm on a 2.2 ROM (in the UK) with the latest full Adobe Flash Player 10.1.92.8 That page opens and runs fine each time. There is no Flash displaying on there for me.

Thanks for checking that out. I copied the link straight from my windows PC so I hope that explains why the format is not as you expect. I've managed to load the page by setting my desire to enable plugins 'on demand' rather than 'always'. That way the page loads but with no flash video, (the windows version does).
I was hoping i could just leave it set to 'always' though as 95% of the flash on the BBC site works perfect.
Cheers
Forgot to say i'm using a factory unbranded Desire unrooted with 2.2 update and Adobe Flash Player 10.1.92.8
You're right. Set plugins to 'always on' causes a browser crash even on the stock FroYo. Although I always use 'on demand' so it wouldn't be a problem for me.
Not very good. Now I can't start my browser as it keeps crashing on opening.

That page also crashes my browser. This seems to be an issue affecting several people, as someone else posted a similar problem the other day regarding BBC Sports pages here. Having just switched my plugins back to "Always On" and can confirm it's still an issue today on those pages too.
Does anyone have any idea if this is affecting everyone on Froyo? I guess many will switch the plugins option to "On Demand" and never notice it because of this. However, if you do that for these problematic pages, you don't even get the green arrow button to download the flash video.
I guess the other question is - is this BBC specific? (I've not yet seen it elsewhere.)
Hopefully now we have identified there is a problem someone can fix it! I tried another stock Froyo Desire today and it did the same thing too.
th3, i hope you fix your browser, hate to think it's faulty because of me Mine still works ok........
I've not noticed it on any other site yet, but the BBC site is my main source of info.
Does it with numerous bbc sites on my desire in uk too. Get dolphin browser from the market. Problem solved.
Sent from my modded HTC Desire... oh yea!

Photon browser alternative

I've been looking for a good flash browser and photon ticks most of the boxes as its perfect for some live streaming sites I use. The only down side for me is the ads, I don't like downloading these apps for a couple of days pass and don't want to pay for a year long pass. Does anyone have any alternatives I could try ?
Firefox usually works pretty well for me on flash sites.

Firefox is fine for most flash content but it doesn't seem to work with live content which is what I need
