so my old g2 took a dip in the pool...and i could not revive it. put it in rice, it worked but wouldnt vibrate/speaker was trashed. got a refurbished insurance replacement and now am trying to root it again.
ive tried visionary and it would not work. r14 to be exact. i put it on, it says its running and then goes to a black screen and will do nothing. un-installed, rebooted, tried again....still no luck. ive tried this a few times with no success. i also tried doing the "gfree-rage" one and im not sure if im doing it wrong but it will not work.

anyone out there with a brand new G2 that can give me some advice or help me out? cant downgrade OTA's since i cant get temp root.
Unfortunately, the 2.3.3 release can't be rooted yet. There's a big thread in the General forum if you need more details.
well i will have to check out that thread. unfortunately i was leaning towards that since i was doing everything right according to directions etc. thanks for the input even if it was bad news for me
When it is rootable don't use visionary unless you want to risk bricking your phone

Visionary isnt that bad . Ive done 7 G2s without any problems . Theres always
a risk bricking a device though regardless of what way you do it .

I just recieved my new EVO today from sprint. (my other one had a dead pixel) I have done no updates to it, just turned it on. I have just tried the Simple Root and it fails because i have Software Number 1.47.651.1 and i guess i need the older one. But the phone came with it. Im currently on Stock 2.1. Can i still fully root somehow????
Just wait and try to be patient. You're not the only person in that situation. A fix will, no doubt, be on it's way eventually.
And don't be in a rush to try other things that aren't made for the release you have. You might end up like some other people and really mess up the phone by being impatient.
Wait, isn't Simple Root made for 1.47? And can't you root 1.47 manually anyway using toast's guides?
Huh, i just rooted one with that build. Did u get the 1 click simple root program for that build? I still use the 4 step one for the evos i root.

Yeah either the one step simpleroot or on the wikwi guide page use "simplest root method without a user gui" all work fine with 1.47

Im not sure if it was for 1.32 but yes it it was the 3 step simple root. Maybe thats why it didnt work Could you maybe show me the link to the one you are talking about please?? Thanks much
1.47 is the easiest to root. You are not on the "new software number". Don't freak out....
Use simple root for 1.47, search for it... It is easy to use, after that you can flash any rom through recovery.
i used visionary to temp root my device, then i clicked on the perm root option just to say what happened then my phone froze i started touching the screen and a menu popped up and i clicked an option on accident. the option on the left. then my phone shut off and is froze on the htc boot screen. i pulled the battery and the same thing happened. i tried a factory data reset and the phone is still frozen on the boot screen. please help T-Mo G2, 2.2, no roms
I really do not know why the visionary guides are allowed on these forums. I find it GROSSLY irresponsible of the mods. It has been proven TIME AND TIME AND TIME AND TIME again that visionary bricks phone. For god sakes there is a sticky at the top of the forum saying DON'T USE VISIONARY FOR PERM ROOT. Your phone might be screwed. And its really not your fault. Those threads need closed. Period. Seriously mods, how many phones do you want ruined before you rid the forum of the visionary crap. The gfree method among MANY other alternatives works and DOESN'T BRICK PHONES. WHY LET THIS CRAP STAY FOR PEOPLE LIKE THIS WHO SEE IT AS AN EASY METHOD AND JUMP AT IT UGH.

if you'd done some research (not picking on you, just for future reference), you'd have found many a testimony that visionary should not be used on the vision--oh, the irony--to obtain permanent root. visionary temp root is fine, but its perm root is dangerous to our phones.
are you able to boot into recovery? do you have a custom recovery (ie clockworkmod) installed? do you have the engineering hboot installed?
Visionary's Perm root will basically brick your phone... sorry
i can boot into recovery but i dont have cyanogen or any roms or anything installed i just rooted my phone

Don't tell them that you tried to root your phone, just tell them it did it on it's own.
sure, they'll probably find out once they've got it, but by then they'll probably just fix it. htc sometimes fixes rooted phones if the they belive the problem was something else.
for example (this has actually happened):
lets say your phones screen stopped working, but it was rooted. the root has nothing to do with the screen, so they'll fix it, but when the phone was returned to the customer it was no longer rooted.
Is sending my phone to HTC my only option because i can still boot into to recovery and get into the bootloader and all that. i just want to know that HTC is my last resort
If your bootloader says S-ON, and your recovery is not CWM then you're good to go.
Visionary works for exactly what it is supposed to do. Temp root. Then you can achieve perm root with the various methods depending on your build #. It perm roots on earlier phones - so I hear, as well. The OP hit the perm root button without s-off. Easier to find warnings about that could be instructive, but the mods can't take the visionary instructionals off the forum. ABD is not exactly a friend to the G2. There are a number of things the OP can try. If they really release the update - that should do it. Thread-rom manager, rom backup, and red exclamation point. Etc.

Actually they can take them off the forums, and even if that was true, they can close the threads and let them fall into oblivion. They do all of xda a gigantic disservice by being so irresponsible and letting that junk linger so noobs can brick there phone within the freaking day of buying it. Its outrageous and I'm not gonna listen to any other arguement.

There's a perfectly good guide on XDA Wiki for permrooting the G2, and other sub forums on XDA for each device to root. There's no need for Visionary at this point. There will always be alternative ways to root phones.
Well,
I was using the word "can't" for emphasis. I suppose in some ways "don't" would have been more accurate. Let me try again. Feel free not to listen. I will always be grateful to Modaco. Here's why: I had a G1 (gf has it now -running froyo at the moment), TouchPro 2 (my Dad is using it now - so not that modified, but it was); I finally get a G2 and I can't do anything with it. I sat there for 24 hours trying to root it before I called 1 of the 2 guys in Austin on Craigslist offering flashing/rooting/unlocking services. Sat with him for 12 hours. On the plus side he did show me how to set up ABD. On the other hand lot of time with an irate stranger who won't even take the money he is so upset with himself.
Finally figured out if you use the root no abd required method twice (on everything but the G2s with Gingerbread) you can sneak by barely and downgrade etc. Visionary provided the temp root.
I wasn't lucky enough to get a G2 on the first day. I was in the same boat as the folks with Gingerbread. Thought I had waited too long. My parting words from the professional flashers place. But Visionary and the automated scripts for Gfree saved me. Should the perm root button contain a warning that you need s-off first? Sure. But developers have little incentive to update when criticism is so harsh. I have a feeling every root method is indebted to Visionary. If I had a "ginger" G2 I would be praying they were working on a fix.

Hi, I have tried rooting about 20 times (not even kidding), and almost every time it gets stuck on step #7. I have installed drivers from LG and have phone in debugging mode. (I tried doomlord, but it won't recognize my Nitro) Does anyone have any advice to help me root my Nitro?

Try rooting it the way they root the optimus. That's what I did and it worked fine.

Remove the SD card( or unmount it), i got the same problem here and it thats what worked
What worked for me was installing the Android SDK package.
I was hanging at step #7 as well and after installing the package it went through.

problems rooting too!
So this being my first post and all please dont freak. I searched as best I could to find the proper thread to ask this and this seemed like the best option. So here it goes.
I myself tried rooting my phone with Superoneclick and after numerous attempts I failed miserably. So I tried Doomlord's rooting method. I thought I had figured it out because at the end it said "OK!" and it even rebooted my phone but when I tried to DL Titanium backup and busybox it said it could not gain root access. My question is, first would it be safe to attempt the root process again, or if not any ideas on what I might have done wrong and maybe a solution to fix it?
Thanks again
P.S dear Mod if this was the inappropriate place to post this I apologize in advance.
i would download the superuser app and see if tibu finds root
also, there should be no prob running the rooting app again if you choose to, if you are rooted already it should return a *already rooted* message.
So I tried dl superuser and that did nothing. I even did a master reset maybe thinking that I might of changed a setting I want suppose to, and even that didn't work. Like I said I can't get SOC past step 7 and I've tried all the tips I read on here to get past that problem but nothing. Doomlords looks like it worked and it reboots my phone but still nothing. I would really truly appreciate any help!
thanks again

Apples and oranges. The two programs used to install custom recovery on the Aria utilize exploits in the HBOOT, which is something only HTC devices have.
What software version do you have on your device? (Look in Settings > About Phone > Software version)
I'm having the same situation. Everything I've read says that if you did the security update without root already then you can't root now. I would love for some one to prove me wrong and show me a way. IM running 2.3.5 v10j with kernel 2.6.35.11.

You have the recent update installed which makes it impossible to root the device. There are still methods to get the device rooted but it is not simple and basically involves this process: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1597488
I would urge you to make sure you know what you're doing before attempting this though.
I had the above problem with not being able to root my phone due to the software version i had. I had to use the "unbricking guide" and after some challenges i was able to restore the phone to stock with root. It is risky, but at this moment im not sure theres any other way to do it, unless someone with programming skills can find an alternate method to go back to a previous version of the software without resetting or unbricking the entire phone.
today i tried to get my contract phone unlocked from orange with an online shop, ive just had it for going on 2 years & the contracts nearly over BUT the guy emailed me back saying it had been rejected the only thing i can think of is that i recently sent it back for repair & now found this on their site.
"The handset to be unlocked must have been registered to an Orange account in their name for a minimum of three months"
even though my 2 year contract is just about up the replacement phone they sent me out will have a new IMEI number due to them swapping it over so in theory ive not had it 3 months..
So my question is will rooting this phone make it so i can then put in another sim card from another network.? or will it make no difference as i don't want to risk bricking it if its not going to work.?
many thanks for any advice given.

Yes. The hack kit sim unlocks your device. However, not all sim unlock devices work with all Sims. There are certain Sims that are carrier locked.

Once you are S-OFF, flashing a,ruu won't revert back that.

First off, I'm not new to rooting etc. I've previously rooted several HTC devices and achieved s-off which for those ofyou who know HTC phones, know that the process can be difficult.
That being said, I've recently switched to my very first Samsung device and have achieved root with no problems, but was unable to flash any roms. After searching for a week and coming up empty handed, I decided I'd try the all in one toolbox. I downloaded it and when checking my build number, I discovered what my problem likely is.
My phone is with telus and is the 1747M.
How have I managed to get that build number? Can I change the build easily enough? Should I leave it on that build and just use roms meant for the i9300?
Thanks in advance for your help!!

DO NOT USE i9300!! If it is a carrier device (i747[M]), which it is, you will brick your phone and have to get it JTAGGED. You need to only flash ROMs located in this section.

I've read all of that stuff and the answer to my question isn't there. My build number is the same as listed in i9300. I wasn't going to flash any of those roms without finding out if that was the solution to my problem. I don't want to brick my phone and therefor I stopped doing anything to it until I was able to get some help on how to proceed. I only discovered the build number issue when I tried to use the all in one toolkit and noticed my build number didn't match any of the telus ones but the 9300 ones. I guess I'll just have to continue researching on my own to figure it out. I wouldn't have posted if I wasn't stuck. Thanks anyways
