WM6.5 Instant Messanging & WiFi - Touch Pro2, Tilt 2 Windows Mobile General

At present I do not have cellular data connect, only WiFi. Will WM6.5 Instant Messaging work on WiFi or do I need the Cell connect? At present I cannot get it to work.

Use a different IM client. IM plus is popular, as is Palringo for WM. Either one of those can connect to multiple chat clients over wifi. The stock one from the AT&T ROM is meant to connect over cellular data. This is most likely so that you have to buy their data plan.

cajunflavoredbob ,
I figured as much, but just wanted to make sure. Thanks for confirming
I have tried Palringo but didn't like it. Wanted something more simplistic. Hence Im using BeeJive for WM 6.5. I like it though once in a blue moon it freezes, prompting a soft reset. Its a beta and presently has been abandoned. Too bad, its a sweet little program, just needed a bit more time.

Here's a list of IM software that I turned up with a quick search. Google is your friend.

WM6 Black 3.0.1 advice please

Hi All,
Wow, Been a while since i had to post on here for help.
OK, before you all start flaming, Yes i have searched for a few days, inc. google and the WM6 Black forum 4winblack to no avail,
Everyone asking but no one answering and just flaming (hence no one can find the answer when searching and leaving them no choice but having to ask)
ME.
Member on here since 2005 ( so no noob, I always search and find )
have a MDA vario II HERM 300
Running Windows Mobile VI - Black Edition 3.0.1
IPL 1.04
SPL 2.10.OLipro
Radio ver. 1.41.00.10
T-mobile UK W+W
OK the burning question that has me stumped.
and i am cringing cause i dont want you to flame throw me.
Windows Live issue
Unable to establish an internet connection. Can this be fixed and How?
I have re installed WM VI black Live & messenger cab but still same issue.
Messenger Sign in as issue
How do i get to sign in there is no where to sign in
just a blank pick and the option to go online.
Are these issues fixed and are they just relevent to WM6 Black or all packages, am tempted to downgrade or switch roms in hope.
Finally as last resort will posket msn work on WM6
Again sorry for asking but i do truly search, it a shame when you do get new users using such a great forum and they get flamed, Remember if everyone is treated in this way, how can anyone search and find the answer.
I have opened countless posts on the subject only to find the person asking flamed and no answer given. This makes it near inpossible to find the correct answer.
Didn't come on to moan LOL. Have a good un all,
Can't help on your other issues as I don't use Messenger or MSN, but I have no trouble with Windows Live with this rom. Connects with no problems.
You need to reenter your 3G modem settings in your connections so that it knows how to connect to the network. wap.cingular and then your 7 digit phone number is hte password.
Am able to browse web fine and hitting speed of 1200KB sec
used the TMobile UKFixed cab which auto does it all for you, but just keep getting this damn message.
Or am i missing something here...

hmm.. I have seen these issues before in other posts and enouctered some myself. Pimpmyblack has a tab which will allow you to have your gprs/media net on all the time (assuming you have unlimited plan). From my experience there is a bug with live, it doesnt like to establish gprs conn if it is not alread on. I have noticed this with piscel browser too. As much as I hate doing it, my non-hack work around is to open pie and connect to google. this establishes connection w/ gprs. its not ideal, but I have exhaustedly serached for a fix to this too with no avail. hopefully that can hold u over until the geniuses figure somethin out.
Yeah it maybe something with WM6 i think and the way it allows programs to hook up to the internet. For example everytime i use my opera mini i have to first open up explorer to establish an internet connection and then i can start using opera mini. So that maybe what is required for you to do. But i would highly recommend you to just switch over to one of the newer roms that have been cooked. I was on black 3.0.1 and just had to many problems with bluetooth and connections to the internet. So i strongly recommend that buddy.
thanks for the suggestions, glad others have herd of the problem but unable to find fix.
yes. I have tried pimp my black and changed settings to internet always on.
also tried with internet connection open and then trying windows live and messenger but both problems still exist.
shame as accessing my hotmail accounts instantly is a must.
looks like will have to try your suggestion of another ron.
recommendations ?
thanks
Well it looks like This was one good thread. started good and ended good. So lets lock it up if its cool with you guys.
agree, thanks to everyone.
to sum up.
I could not find a fix to the issues I had :-{
I eventually took the advice and changed roms.
now running Custels 2.5 and everything. I mean everything is working fantastic. plus the bonus of office 2007 and live is running great.
I can only suggest black is a little buggy for myself but hey im happy with Custels 2.5
thanks to all again.
try not and leave it another 2 years before I post again lol.

question: mobile IM for wm6?

hey guys, I've recently upgraded to wm6 and found out that my mobile IM that i downloaded thru mediaNet does not work anymore. it was working fine on wm5 but i do not want to downgrade back to it. does anybody have any idea when it'll be available for wm6? i talked to an ATT rep about it and they do not know, thanks
I suggest you try Agile Mobile. Works great for me.

www.fring.com from your phone - both voice and standard IM on all networks - FREE
was looking for the same thing... tried agile messenger but it really sucks performance out the phone, i'd keep missing calls (newly formatted schaps rom too).
moved to IM+ but problem with that is that i keep getting an error on sign up that some contact is already on my list, and even if i remove it it gives the error. aside from that, its a fantastic app.
haven't tried fring, but will check it out now
Try Slick. It's a good IM program.
Oh yeah, Mundu IM is good too. It's only $11. I use it a lot. It's $8.80 right now at a holiday discount.
I have purchased both Agile and IM+
IM+ is a winner in my book and been using it since then.

don't all of these apps run by data? i like the standard mobile IM from ATT cause it uses sms. (i have a 1500 text/month plan)
but i got it to work finally.... i was using Shamanix`s Grass v2.2 rom... so i flashed the original ATT wm6 rom and it worked. for some reason i believe shamanix's rom was making the IM app try to log in thru wifi, while the ATT's connects with gprs
anybody know why?
Is there any messenger for ICQ which has a good history? Particularly, I would like to be able to import the history into Miranda on my desktop. It would be perfect if there's already a converter for Miranda but if the program only saves history as plain text files I coul surely write a converter myself...

Its not a problem with the ROM you use.
Go to "Connections"
Select "connections"
Then, "Advanced"
then, "select networks"
1. In option "Programs that automatically connect to the internet should connect using" --- select " My work network"
2. In wireless option, don't forget to set the network cards to option "My network card connects to "The Internet"
Now, your wifi conx will be used for logging in.

wmIRC

I've downloaded and installed the trial for wmIRC and it's working fine over WIFI on my HTC S621, but I can't get it to work over GPRS\EDGE ? I can use IE and Opera Mini without the WIFI.
Any ideas of what I can try, or are there other Windows Mobile Smartphone Standard IRC clients I could try?
Thank you,
Tim

make sure you start an edge connection before trying to log onto irc. i use wmirc daily and works through either connection. just open a browser and go to a website to initiate the data connection (for some reason wmirc will initiate *sometimes* and not others) then open irc and just hit connect. may take a sec to go through the ident and ****...but it gets there...

I've tried that, no luck. I don't have the ident option checked, but I never need it for WIFI. I'm just wondering if it's my carrier, Suncom blocking it. It's just strange to me that my email, IE, mini-opera, etc. works. But not this.
I'm looking now to see if I can find a way to link (or echo) messages over to an instant messenger ID. Because I know that I can get Palringo or some other IM client to work.
Thank you,
Tim

I wasnt so much talking about enabling indent..i was just talking about when you connect to the server and i queries the client..
what version of wmirc is it?
This probably doesn't help much but I have it working fine on another device over CDMA.
Honestly, prepare to be disappointed though. Its a very buggy program. The user lists tend to disappear, sometimes a new pm opens and switching from one to the next shows the same messages, and it randomly completely crashes.
There's also zsIRC at zsirc.com. However, this is many written for WM Pro, so there's a lot of things that you can't do if you don't have a touchscreen (also, you can't install the .cab on WM Standard and need to use the .exe installer.)
i agree. but for smartphone its really the only one that works. ive tried 3. wmirc, jirc and some other one that i cant remember.
as far as just chattin in a channel, its fine. ive had it up with no disconnects on the edge network for 8 hours. with wifi i have left on for days and it never crashed or disconnected. yea the user list is a little retarded, but thats a non issue for me. you can still use basic commands like /whois . i dont think its ever going to get better than this though. as far as i know, no one else is developing a new client.
so i guess just pick the lesser poison..if you want to run it through java (which i couldnt stand) try out jirc.
shoot me a pm and let me know what version you have. i will probably just give you a link to my site and you can try the one i have because i know it works. im running 6.1 rickys v. 24
I'm just using the standard 2.2 from the wmirc.com site.

How to get Skype working for the TP2

The reason for this thread is to help people get Skype working to its fullest extent and resolve some of the issues. The ultimate objective is to allow those with Skype subscriptions to get unlimited anytime calling across North America if they pay the $2.95 / month for the Skype plan and have unlimited data...
Download Skype 3.0 for Windows Phones here:
http://www.skype.com/intl/en/download/skype/windowsmobile/
It installs fine and theoretically works great, however, there are a number of issues:
1. Skype automatically routes all audio to the speakerphone.
To route the audio to the earpieces, install audioRoute from Teksoft:
http://teksoftco.com/storage/download.php?product=audioroute_ppc
This product is discussed here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=495166
It essentially installs an icon in your taskbar that loads when the phone starts up. Once you open Skype, you click the icon, select the first icon, which is the earpiece, and then all audio will get routed to the earpiece when using Skype.
To route the audio to a Bluetooth headset, then install A2DP toggle from Teksoft:
http://teksoftco.com/storage/download.php?product=a2dptoggle
This program should theoretically allow you to select the Bluetooth headset when Skype is loaded. It should theoretically be able to be loaded concurrently with audioRoute. I have not tested it fully.
2. Skype will not work unless connected to a wifi connection
I had tested Skype and thought it worked flawlessly until someone with an iPhone mentioned that he had to install some sort of program to "trick" Skype into thinking it was connected to a Wifi. I believe that this is an issue with the way Microsoft has designed Windows Mobile, but is probably intential to prevent competition for telecommunication company voice packages. This issue supposedly does not exist with Windows Mobile clients.
Just ensure that ActivSync/Wifi/Mobile is enabled under the Connection settings.
3. Skype Mobile does not support video calling
I'm not sure if this is a software issue or just something that can be hacked. I see no reason why this functionality would be disabled in the Mobile version of Skype... any insight would be appreciated.
Would love it if anyone else is experiencing problem 2 as well... I want to find out if it's isolated to my handset... or even to just my carrier.

No problem here on a Vodafone TP2. Skype uses the 3G connection fine.
You know that htere's a setting that tells Skype what connection(s) to use? It defaults to "Use ActiveSync/Wifi" but can be changed to "Use ActiveSync/Wifi/Mobile"
It was working for me I think
see the message below
It was working for me I think
Maybe I'm misunderstanding the question, but I have made calls through Skype on my TyTN II using the Australian Three 3G network. Called my wife on her mobile in Shanghai with no problems. Well, the connection was pretty horrible (I think it's a bit hard work for both the phone and the network) but it connected fine for as long as I wanted.
As tjobbins said, in the Connection Method settings, I can "Use ActiveSync/WiFi" or "Use ActiveSync/WiFi/Mobile"... so if I'm overseas, I leave it on the first one; in Australia on the second one.

Interesting... I think my settings might have changed because I tested it again just now and it worked!
Thanks all!
I'm interested in how this works. I own the Titan at the moment and Skype only works over Wifi. Do you know if Skype plans on fixing the problem with calls only being heard from speaker phone? Any update on video calling?
off-topic question here, does anyone know if the titan operates on 3G? (i have sprint)

We can only hope. Skype have their forums and I saw a number of posts complaining about those missing features. I guess we should add our voices, though I would expect it will take a while for it to be fixed; the current version for Windows Mobile, Skype 3, was released fairly recently.
One alternative to look at is Fring. It supports better audio routing, i.e. calls are not only on speakerphone - they can come through the normal phone earpiece, or a bluetooth headset. Don't think it does video. As well as Skype, it also supports MSN, ICQ, Yahoo, AIM and others, so it's a good all-in-one client.
However on the TP2 Fring does currently have one quite annoying issue - it doesn't seem to work on Wifi. It's fine on mobile/3G connections, but on Wifi it won't list access points or connect. This is reported on their forums but no sign of a fix yet. Actually I did once get it connect to WiFi, but I don't really know how and haven't been able to repeat it.
Oh I just remembered the other huge problem with Skype for Windows Mobile - it doesn't list your phone contacts!
Bloody useless when you want to make a Skype Out call, and you end up having to go into the contact record, copy their number, and then paste it into Skype. Really daft.
Fring does list your contacts, and you can use it for Skype Out as well as Fring's own paid-for outbound dialling system.
I have another problem: NO notifications! So i don't know if someone chats or phone me! It's useless in that way!

Thanks for the suggestion. I want to make sure that I'm using only data-only when making calls, since I have unlimited data... and limited daytime voice minutes.
I installed fring, and it doesn't show the TP2 as a supported device. When I launched it, it kept asking me to find a WLAN... except nothing shows up on the list! Wifi is enabled AND data is enabled, and it keeps showing Not Available...
Has it worked on your TP2?

Nope. See my post before the one you quoted! It doesn't work on WiFi on the TP2 at the moment - and also on some other WM devices I think.
Works great on 3G and ActiveSync, just doesn't work on WiFi.
Except.. once for me it did. It suddenly connected and I don't know how or why. Haven't managed to repeat it yet though. But maybe there's a workaround lying in there waiting to be (re) discovered

No no - I had wifi disabled and just tried to use regular data connection... but it couldn't find the connection for some reason.
Hate to bump an old thread... but I finally got Fring working on my TP2 (latest version), but SkypeOut calls don't actually direct to the Earpiece... I don't hear anything. Loudspeaker works fine.

In your cellular settings you will have to add the apn data to get the data going.
Can't help much more without knowing your provider.
Helps to download the Nokia Connections app.
If you are using it on other carriers, you will need to configure the APN. There are two ways to do it;
1. You can maunally add the APN of your carrier to the phone but you will not get MMS working.
2. You need an app called Network Setup from Nokia to switch the connections to your carrier if it is in the list. This will switch both data connection and MMS.

We're glad to have you here with us. Our world is much better, and has a far more promising future.
//Side-note// That little green thing is supposed to be an android? How? It looks more like a little green trash can or MAYBE an alien...
android (plural androids) + Noun
A robot that is designed to look and act like a human (usually male)
That thing looks like a human? Google has NO reason that they weren't able to do a search to make sure they knew what the word android meant... I mean, I guess it's a bit ironic... But that little green trash can is NOT an android.
Dont get me wrong, i like android, it has some features that complement me much better, i just wanted a phone that works and the lumia 900 works and looks great. My old lg optimus 2x just had crap for support and the OS that LG created was very buggy. Maybe someday i'll return to android but i wanted something that is smoother. so far so good.
Oh, to be clear, I like Android too... I was just pointing out that the little green thing isn't really an android by definition... I may have been inebriated at the time I posted that ;\
