[Q] matched contacts suggestion manually check - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My Desire showed me the matched contacts suggestion once after the first installation but now if I want to link contacts from different services I need to do it one by one manually, without having any automatic match suggestion. My question is: is there a way to run the process of automatic matching like the phone did the first time? This should be some kind of process that I could probably run manually in some way. I have root rights.
Thank you very much for any suggestion.

I have this problem too, do it one by one really making me headache.

[Q]Application had to terminate/ Root Question

Hello all,
I am new to android and experiencing this great oss via my htc desire!
I have version 2.2 (I think it's called froyo - non-rooted).
A prolbem occurs sometimes that says (translated from greek):
"There was an unexpected termination of the application "Messaging" (process com.android.mms) Try again."
And the only button I can press is "Close (or Forced Close)"..
This does not happen only with Messaging but wit Google services and a general "Android system", as well..
The problem I 've noticed is that when entering the Messaging application it shows the sms I 've received by my contacts, but these appear not as contacts nut as mobile numbers.
In example, at my contacts, I have Mr.X with mobile number 12345.
Sometimes when I enter the messaging application, I see 12345 and not the Mr.X as sender.
This is solved by forcing the application to close via the Application Manager (or management, through settings).
What can I do to solve these matters?
Is hard/soft reset a solution?
Also if I root my device am I going to lose data?
Is there any guide to follow so as to root my mobile? (I am really new to this android stuff, but have knowledge of PCs general and psp (flashing, wich is the same with custom roms)).
I would like to save my Contacts, Messages and Applications. Which application should I use?
Thank you!
Hard reset will most likely fix it.
By just rooting you don't lose data, and after you're rooted you can make a nandroid backup.
If you want to root you can check the development section for instructions.
Edit: If you do a hard reset you will lose the data on the phone (messages, etc.), so you might want to backup them before that.
Thank you for your reply!
About the backup you've said, is there any good application to backup sms, contacts?
I am taking a backup now and using the one by sprite mobile..Is it good?
Or should I root firstly and then use another backup application that needs rooted device?
Okay I think a better backup would be MyBackup (this is only a demo but should do for you) or LifeSaver
If you root with unrEVOked you'll get a custom recovery, from which you can make a nandroid (If this sentence doesn't make any sense to you please feel free to use search to find what I mean )
Also If you have root you can use Titanium Backup app.
I believe that I got what you said..
I would have Revoked if I bought it in example from a Vodafone store right?
I think mine is not branded...so I have unrevoked?? :S
Yes, "Revoked" will work for you.
But before doing that please get to know android OS a little better, I have a feeling you are not absolutely aware what are you about to do.
So read a little bit about "rooting", you can find plenty of information in the development section.
One of the important things is to check your firmware so in case you have problems you can revert to the "out of the box" state.
Revoked will work?
I thought it is Unrevoked.. :-S
Because I haven't bought my mobile from a provider such as vodafone..
When you say, get to know android OS a little better, what do you recommend doing?
I was refering to this because I didn't quite understand you clearly.

Nevermind it is unrEVOked. And it will work, no matter where did you get your phone from. For more information on rooting and similar stuff check out this threads:

[Q] Rooting with stock roms and other Qs

I've got a few questions, but the thread title is probably the most appropriate
I have an HTC Desire Bravo PVT3 SHIP S-ON
Runs HBOOT 0.93.0001
Radio version 5.11.05.27
I'm looking to root it on it's stock, up to date ROM, partly in order to remove some of the bloat that gets installed (Facebook for HTC Sense being a big annoyance, seeming to block the normal facebook app from any kind of sync, meaning I can only have ALL facebook contacts, or none. I would rather "only sync existing contacts", but this is not possible with the Sense facebook), and partly for root apps.
However, having done some research, it appears that I need to load a custom recovery image to do so, which as far as I know will mean automatic updates are no longer possible.
So question 1. Is this correct?
Question 2. Even if automatic updates are not available, is it possible to keep using stock HTC ROMs, manually updating them? (And if so, will this retain all the settings/accounts/apps/contacts/etc that were on the phone beforehand? Or will I need to set everything up again?)
Question 3. If using HTC ROMs is going to be a massive pain, not possible, whatever, which custom ROM provides both the Sense UI (minus the awful facebook apps, etc included, if possible), while aiming for stability and speed. (Leedroid seems to be the best bet, but better to check with those who have experience)
Question 4. If flashing to a custom ROM, or even updating a custom ROM, is it possible to again, save all settings and apps, such as account sync, contacts, etc, or will the phone be essentially "factory" and require a total setup again?
Question 5. What exactly is the difference between Shell root and root, and would I be able to uninstall system apps such as the "Facebook for HTC Sense" app that comes preinstalled, with it?
Question 6. What would I need S-OFF for and should I do it? (Not totally sure if this is a requirement for nandroid backups, hence why I ask!)
Can't think of anything else for now, so I'll thank those who reply in advance!

(And if so, will this retain all the settings/accounts/apps/contacts/etc that were on the phone beforehand? Or will I need to set everything up again?) No idea why you want to keep contacts since they are synced with google, but it is possible to upgrade without wiping but not recommend. Meaning that you might run in to issues that could have been avoided by wiping
Question 3. If using HTC ROMs is going to be a massive pain, not possible, whatever, which custom ROM provides both the Sense UI (minus the awful facebook apps, etc included, if possible), while aiming for stability and speed. (Leedroid seems to be the best bet, but better to check with those who have experience) It is possible to remove the HTC sense version of facebook but it's not on the 'safe to remove' list. That facebook for htc sense prevents the normal facebook app from workign is not true so you can also chose not to use it, which is the safer way.
Question 4. If flashing to a custom ROM, or even updating a custom ROM, is it possible to again, save all settings and apps, such as account sync, contacts, etc, or will the phone be essentially "factory" and require a total setup again? Again it won't do a factory reset unless you tell it so, but it is recommend to do so to prevent issues
Question 5. What exactly is the difference between Shell root and root, and would I be able to uninstall system apps such as the "Facebook for HTC Sense" app that comes preinstalled, with it? No idea what the difference is but if you root with unrevoked you can remove apps from the system partition while in recovery
Question 6. What would I need S-OFF for and should I do it? (Not totally sure if this is a requirement for nandroid backups, hence why I ask!) It allows to write to the system partition while booted. Not relevant for nandroid and only do it once you figure out yourself why you might need it
Can't think of anything else for now, so I'll thank those who reply in advance!

Thanks for the response.
Point one... in regards to facebook, no Sense does not appear to break the facebook app, but nonetheless, the facebook app itself will not sync in accounts and sync. Nor do any sync options appear in the app itself. It's version 1.5.0, the latest, and others using other phones have the sync options there, whereas the desire does not appear to. This is a massive pain, because I do not want -all- my facebook contacts available on the phone, only ones I have already added, hence the "only sync existing contacts" function within the app... which is unavailable.
As for the contacts, are you sure they're synced to google? Having a look at my google contacts from within gmail I only see the ones I have added over the web. Yes, while they are linked to contacts on the phone they update as the phone edits them, however I have contacts on the phone which are not linked to any online service, and simply stored within the phone's memory. Are these synced anywhere?
Final questions...
Does anyone know of a fix for the facebook issue I describe above?
and
Which rom should I choose for speed and stability on the Desire? Sense UI would be nice, but is by no means a priority, and of course, ongoing, good support is needed!
Thanks again
*Facepalm*
OK so Google contacts are indeed syncing, I'm just blind.
Nonetheless, the facebook issue where I cannot sync "only existing contacts" is a massive pain, anyone know of a fix?

[Q] HTC Evo 4G (First time ROOT)

All i want to do is root my phone. I have read quite a few articles on it, as well as pros and cons. Searching was also done so don't attack me with the "use the search feature" line. Reading too deep into the rabbit hole proved that anything beyond rooting (although highly beneficial and likely to attempt in the future) was too overwhelming for my busy work schedule. I'm aware of the different methods to achieve root, but I'm still unsure as to whether or not i will lose any data at all, such as app, sms, contacts, call logs, etc.
Any info as to how to root my Evo without losing any data would be greatly appreciated. My main reason is to finally get rid of the Nova app along with others, and to have full control of my phone while i slowly learn from these forums.
P.S. I apologize for being #1,000,000 to ask on this topic.

Use unrevoked3. Its easy. Just follow instructions. U wont lose any data or apps or so forth unless u flash a new rom. Use titanium backup from market after u root phone to save apps and data.

Assuming i follow the directions correctly......consider your self loved by a stranger!
Thanks for the quick response.
Now quick question which i couldn't find an answer for. After installing hboot was i supposed to disconnect my phone from usb? Also how do i exit the white menu where it says fastboot, recovery, clear storage etc.
bump! i hope i didnt screw the process up
bump? ok if you already managed to install the drivers, make sure your phone has usb debug on, you do that in settings, apps, development. also make sure you have othe sources checked, you do that on settings, apps.
no turn your antivirus off on your computer
if you installed htc sync uninstall it
now plug your phone to pc( if it prompts you to select type of connection only charge)
then right click on the file that is unrevoked and run as administrator, follow unscreen intructions and done.
mine was automatic so i didnt need to do anything after i ran it.
good luck

ok last question it says done but my phone is on a clockworkmod recovery screen how do i just load my phone up and use it.
sorry late reply you always get out of recovery with the reboot now option, also you should instal titanium back up so you can back up your apps and get busy box, which you need on your phone so it doesnt lag after root, once installed titanium , open it up, it will probably say you need root, if it does dont mind it you have root, at the bottom you will see a box that says problems, hit it and it will ask you to install busy box, hit yes and you are done, hope procedure is easy and you can do it if not click my user name and send me a message

[Q] Stop Application Auto Install When Flashing New ROM

Hi everyone
For the last few ROM's I have installed I have always had the "pleasure" of seeing all the bloatware that I had downloaded on the last ROM instantly come back onto this, rendering the new flash basically useless.
I know of the thing where you have to uncheck that box when you sign into Google, but it no longer works. All apps come back as usual.
Is there a way of somehow deleting Googles record of the apps I have installed? Or some other workaround?
Thanks
Flash an aosp rom, install at least an app, than reflash the rom you favour. I don't know any other way, sorry.
8penned from my blazing fast DHD
IIRC titanium backup has an option to remove links from the market. If you long press on the offending app and select "Disconnect from Market".
I hope it will work for you.
Thanks for the suggestions guys. Will try those next time I flash.
I found that market apps only download automatically if you sign into your google account on the first boot before you can use the phone, like when you choose your wifi, service provider, language etc. If you just skip the google account login part here, and login later, such as when you first open the market, the apps won't download automatically (although your gmail and contacts will then start to sync). Not sure if it's just me, but this seems to be the case for me everytime.

Google Syncing Issues, Plz Help!!!

Hey guys,
I would like to start by apoligizing if there is a thread relating to this issue, but i have searched the forums and couldn't find a solution. The problems i am having is that Google just will not sync on my phone ATT Galaxy S3. I lost all contacts, google play, and google talk. nothing is working anymore.
Recently i tried to install "freedom" on the phone to get free in app purchases. then installed localepicker. now removed the locale picker and the freedom app and i am not sure if this is what caused the problem.
I dont know alot about all this rooting and flashing and stuff like that... i rooted the phone a very simple way from this website just to get game gaurdian on the phone to mess around with games.
So if anybody could helo with my problem thta would be excellent.
Thank you very Much.

When you go in settings and add account, do you get an error? Also, do you set it to manually sync or automatic?
Did it randomly stop or it was after flashing?

Can not establish a reliable connection to the server.
This could be a temporary problem or your Android device may not be provisioned for data services. If it continues Call Customer Servic .
Thats is the message that I keep getting. And i noticed it this morning after I deleted all that freedom/locale pocket stuff. The Internet still works, it's just it refuses to sync the Google account.
Thanks again for taking the time to help me.

When you look at your signal, is it grey? When it is colored (blue most of the time), then it's connecting with Google, if grey, it's not.
I did a little google search (can go a long way ) and found a few solutions:
1- Just restart the phone without the SIM card, and connect to some WiFi network, so you can login to your Google Account. It will log you into the account, and then you can put the SIM card back.
2- Add YouTube app and login with gmail account
Go into Gmail App and add account if needed.
Sign into Gmail account wither username and password
Go through login process
3- Hard reset your phone. You will lose all information that is currently on your phone when you do this.
Select Settings -> Security -> Factory Data Reset
Once the phone reboots, input your google account information when the phone asks for it.

Tried step #1 and #2. None of these work. Just a quick question before Itry step #3 . Will it cause to brick my phone? The only reason I am asking is because the phone is rooted, by one of the methods on this site. That is my only worry, will anything happen if I do it that way or doni have to go threw Odin and that whole process again? Once again thanks for the help.

You can go in recovery and make a nandroid backup. That will make a flashable image of your phone which you can get back to if something goes wrong.

Wow. Ok I totally lost you there. I don't know how to make backups and flash stuff. Guess I'll just try to take off the pics and videos. And start from scratch again. I would love to have the latest JB update w/o all the bloatware that AT&T puts on it, but that a whole other project in itself. Lol Thank you for all your help.

Fantastic.... all your ideas did nothing...
Still experiencing the same problems. same error message. its like its blocking my phone from syncing. Maybe i deleted a file. I think the best bet would be to flash a whole new ROM or reboot the whole phone, and make it a fresh one.

Do a backup and go back to stock. See if it works there. If not, it's a problem with your carrier, maybe even your sim card.
