Root phone AND unlock sim? - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Hello everyone. I dont currently own the incredible 2, but I am thinking of buying it soon. My decision is contingent upon ONE question;
I want to have my phone rooted and run different roms, yet I also want to unlock the sim because I will be going to school in the carribean soon, and would love to use my android phone over there, through whatever prepaid gsm phone service available there.
can someone tell me if both of these events (rooted [with S-OFF] and unlocked SIM) are possibly simultaneously?
Thank you for your help

As of right now there is no public root because the s-off toll hasn't been relesed. It should be out in a few days though. As for the sim unlock I can't help you with that. Wait for the s-off tool and maybe then it will be possible to unlock the sim.

the unlock shouldn't be a problem. i think you can just call verizon and have them give you an unlock code. from what i've read, they will do that pretty easily for existing customers.

Next step after s-off is to donate alpharev guys for sim unlock ) XTC just wipe seczone to clear all locks, maybe it can be done without any gold cards etc ...

correct, i called and said that i wanted to unlock mine.. the guy replied "what do you mean unlock?".. so i explained that i go out of the country regularly to visit family and would like to use my SIM from another phone in this one so that I don't have to carry around 2 phones. the guy said ok and transfered me to the international dept and they gave me the unlock code.

Living outside the US and just do unlock contacting [email protected] by email and request unlock code for my DInc2. Processing time was about 10 minutes and it costs for me $21.
I just enter 8dig code and phone recognize alien sim card.
PS: Handset is sooo sexy! Much more than Thunderbolt

The post directly above yours claims Verizon offers the SIM unlock code free of charge. There's no reason to pay $21 for a free service.

Unlock DInc 2 Sim
I called Verizon International Support last week to unlock my SIM. They also sent me the instructions, which are as follows:
If customer has a Verizon Wireless SIM card in the Device:
Go to: Settings -> Security -> Disable SIM card lock + Enter
Enter the SIM Unlock code when prompted.
If customer has non-Verizon Wireless SIM card in the Device:
Power cycle the device
Enter the SIM Unlock code when prompted (This will occur when device is powering up)
I am not sure if the unlock code is specific to the model of the device or the IMEI. If someone can post to let me know and it is just generic for the model, I'll post the unlock code.

unlock codes are never generic. whoever wants to unlock will have to call 611 for their personal code.
i currently have a sim unlocked inc2. im wondering if the OP's question is:
1. will the factory unlock stick after root and /or flashing roms
or 2. will there be a software unlock available after root/s-off is avail

Problem
i have HTC INcredible 2
Ive recently unlocked gsm,by pass active, but can't change to GSM mode ( always show CDMA mode)
change to GSM mode , Incredible 2 show
"there is no Sim Card on your device . Your device will switch to CDMA mode now"
try another Sim card , change to GSM mode ,still show ""there is no Sim Card on your device . Your device will switch to CDMA mode now""
-Factory reset and try another sim always show "there is no Sim Card on your device . Your device will switch to CDMA mode now""
My incredible 2 , new in a box 100%
Unlocked by code (8 digi)
Solution ??? help

The main problem is that I'm living overseas and do not have an actual vzw account.
So it was a great soulution for me to pay 21 bucks for the correct unlocking code provided
PS: Handset is much more interesting then my previously used HTC Aria, camera works great and display is brilliant

Did you try calling Verizon or Vodafone (Verizon Wireless is American Vodafone, if you didn't know that before) before spending the money?

Yeap, but they said that need account holder to complete unlocking procedure.

Strange...I would figure they would be able to give an unlock code regardless of account status. The unlock code is not tied to an account. Possibly you reached a dumb rep

I'm in the USA, i like the phone but want to know which 3G band does this phone support. I've seen misleading information.
Please advise. is it 850/1900 or 900/1800 or 1700/2100 ?
thx

If you want to root the inc2 is not the way to go. The only root that exists and is likely to ever exist requires an expensive piece of hardware. The inc2 is one of the most locked down phones ever released. Don't listen to those who say a stable software root is on the way. A stable software root is very unlikely and you are going to be stuck with this phone for 2 years.

There is currently no 'free' way of sim unlocking your device if you hang around long enough someone may write a program to do it but you may be waiting a while. Quite a few members have stated the unlock code can be obtained over ebay within 2 hours for around £9 which is a good price. You could also contact your carrier and tell them you want to take your phone abroad and use a different sim card in it while you are away to save costs. Sometimes they will unlock it for free.

a warning about sim unlock: I got my nexus today from vodafone spain and as expected it was locked. I got an unlock code from ebay and it worked like a charm.
But, I like to play with new phones first, then restore defaults and set everything up the way I want it. The thing is, the galaxy nexus doesn't remember the network unlock code between factory resets, at least mine doesn't (yakju, came with ITL41F).
The codes work, but you may need yours again, so don't throw the number away

Hello Mark, is the Samsung Galaxy Nexus an universal phone? Can I use the unlocked version with LTE carriers in the future? I am in US and Verizon is the only LTE carrier I was wondering about using T-Mobile (HSPS technology) or wait for Sprint (my current carrier). I live in USA but I am thinking about moving to Japan so I wonder if I should just wait and maybe I will need to get one in Japan with one of their carriers... Also I love the forums and it is all great, but is there an IRC room for this questions as well?
Thank you in advance,

The GSM version can be purchased unlocked and used on any GSM carrier with their supplied SIM card. The GSM frequencies are listed for the Galaxy Nexus and they cover the majority of GSM international and US domestic carriers.
The LTE version, as far as we've heard, is only for Verizon in the US. Not sure what LTE technologies other carriers in other countries are using.
If you're interested in having an international capable version of the deivce, the GSM version is currently your best option.
Hope that helps!
Hi,
I would also like to purchase such a code, but how ist it with OTA updates? Still avialable?
How would it be if I later root my phone and put on a custom rom? Will it be still unlocked.
or
cant I just put on a custom rom, to sim-unlock the phone and save those costs?
Sorry for the noob questions.
Thanks

Custom Roms cannot sim unlock your phone as it isnt part of the system.
Flashing an OTA update or a custom rom will not affect your phone if you have sim unlocked it with a code.
MArk.
Hi,
Thanks for the reply.
I have contacted my carrier (A1 Austria) and complained about the simlock. To make a long story short, they finally gave me the simunlock pin.
But recently I unlocked the bootlader and the unlock was wiped so I needed to reenter the pin. After I reflashed the original rom (back to stock) the sim was locked again.
And the most strange thing happened today. I just restarted the phone today (as every day) and the sim was locked again. So reentered the pin to unlock.
My question now, can it be that the simumlock pin they have provided me is not correctly working or is this a normal behaviour or a bug?
Br, Avi

That appears to be normal behaviour.

Galaxy Nexus Successful Unlock (Bought Code)

Hello!
I have an NTT Docomo branded Galaxy Nexus.
Wanted to use a roaming sim so I needed to unlock it.
Checked some sites and finally decided to use the service from this site:
http://samsungimeiunlock.com/
I payed around $32 for the code(depends on which carrier your handset is locked to).
I would have happily donated it to a team who can sim-unlock our phones but I did not have the time to wait since I badly needed to use my roaming sim.
I received the codes in around 8 hrs.
First time using the code worked without problems.
I am not in any way connected to the site I mentioned above.
I just want to help those who are doubting online sites that provide unlock codes.
I guarantee the one I listed above works, and again, I am not in any way connected to the site.
Hope this helps and clears some doubts.
Peace yah all and enjoy your GNs!
P.S. - I unlocked the bootloader, rooted and flashed stock Google ICS 4.0.2 (not Docomo image) prior to inputting the code. Not sure if it would matter though.
If you had unlocked your bootloader then flashed a custom ROM then their would be no need to buy an unlock code would their

I'm curious about one thing. Obviously I don't expect you to send me a copy of your unlock code, since I have a CDMA version and it won't do me any good. I'm just curious about the actual process of using it. Do you just punch in a bunch of numbers into the dialer, or what? Like what is the actual process to do this?
Turn off phone, insert foreign SIM, turn on phone, phone will ask for unlock code. 99% of GSM phones are like this.

sim-unlocking doesn't change any of your phone's capabilites. it just lets you use other sim cards, including your original one

Root and Unlock SIM

so this is my first Android phone where unlocking the SIM card is possible. i've been with Verizon and Sprint so long that i never bothered looking up the unlocking abilities/procedures. the only unlocking experience i've had in the past have been with iPhones, where the jailbreaking software has an option to unlock the SIM card as well.
and i didn't know that you have to ride out your 2 year contract before AT&T will unlock your phone. i've tried searching around here, but i couldn't get a good answer. i kept finding threads in regard to a Canadian carrier where you dial a number + an unlock code, but then some ROMS didn't allow the dialing of that number to work (or something like that).
is there a method to unlock the SIM card of the AT&T version without waiting out the 2 year contract?
yes, just keep asking. use online chat. i got both my devices unlocked, one after 25 days of owning and one after 2 days. you do not need to wait out your contact, that only applied to the iPhone.
p.s. the other two larger unlock Sim threads in this board detail all this for you.
Sent from my Galaxy S III
ATT will unlock the SGS3 after owning it for 15 days, and as long as your last months bill is paid in full.
call them, or chat them and ask for it
thanks for the info. i totally missed the Q&A section somehow.
in related to other threads i found, should i try to unlock the SIM card first before rooting/flashing a custom ROM?
They are mutually exclusive items to do on your phone. One does not affect the other. So to answer your question you can do whichever task you want to have done first.
That said, I like knowing my phone is carrier-lock free asap, so I'd unlock first to get that done.

just got off the Web Chat with an agent. all i did was simply ask for an unlock and he gave me the unlock code to use once inserting a non-AT&T SIM card.
i didn't have to provide a reason or anything.
now all i have to do is locate a non-AT&T SIM card to test the unlock, and then i can proceed to rooting this. hopefully the stable AOKP will be part of today's release.
I just dropped by Bestbuy and bought the phone out-right. Un-activated phones and phones without the stock ROM have to use a diff carrier's SIM to activate the unlock screen.
Pick one up on ebay. you can get a T-Mobile micro SIM for like $2. The only thing it's good for is unlocking your phone.
Like the one I bought:

Why are you telling the OP to pay for it when he doesn't have to?
Guess i'll have to try another time later. Not to mention the guy i chatted with didn't seem too bright. Asked if i could have the SIM Unlock code for my phone, and he said that AT&T sim cards cannot be unlocked.
Told me that it can't be unlocked because it is still contracted to AT&T. Told him i read that people have been getting them unlocked after a couple days of purchasing the device, on contract or not, and he said apparently i was misinformed. haha

If you're not in a position to call to get the code from AT&T (like me, who got from Ebay and lives in NZ), then cellunlocker.net worked for me in terms of getting a code. Just thought I would mention that for people who see this thread and come to find out about SIM unlocking.
yea, i bought my phone on July 26, so it's been 26 days, and since i just started my contracts with AT&T (new customer), i didn't have a last month's bill to pay. and yet the agent i had unlocked it for me with no questioning.
btw, would i be able to use the LTE SIM card from my old Verizon Galaxy Nexus as a "non-AT&T" SIM card?
If you're waiting on a sim like I was... just install the cm10 nightly for the 21st. It will show the unlock screen upon reboot. I didn't need a dialer code or sim. This bug allowed me to use the code I got from att to successfully unlock my phone.

After 2-3 months T-Mobile should unlock it for you upon request. Just call them.
So I finally took the time to see if the SIM card from my old Verizon Galaxy Nexus would work.
I turned off my S3, put in the Verizon SIM, and started up. After I unlocked the screen, I was promoted to input unlock code or dismiss. I typed the code in and after a few minutes I was taken to my home screen.
I guess it's safe to say my S3 is now unlocked? If I really want to make sure, I would have to have a working SIM to put in my S3?

Unlocking Moto Z 2 Force - Tmobile

Hi Everyone,
I've seen some posts about unlocking this but I'm curious as to whether I can unlock a T-Mobile branded phone purchased outright that has never been activated.
What have you all found to be the easiest way to unlock it? I've already reached out to TM via FB to no avail.
Let me know what you guys think.
Thanks!
Bootloader unlock is done via Motorola. To unlock your device for all carriers you must actively use the phone for 7 days. If you can't unlock it yourself after 7 days using the builtin app, then go in to a store. They can call in and help get it unlocked, but only after you've used the phone for 7 days.

Ok, that is my question.
The phone is brand new - no sim. I'm trying to get it to a prepaid wireless service and need it unlocked to do so. What you're saying is that I would need to activate it for 7 days for the bootloader to work, correct?
Tmobile themselves offer unlocking but only after 40 days of service which is a no go in my current situation.
Thanks again for any help. No other programs or apps out there that can unlock it more quickly without the amount of work?
You guys are awesome!

No. You are matching the two things together. Let me be a little bit simpler about this. All use different paragraph so you don't get confused.
BOOTLOADER unlock can be done about 1 minute after you buy the phone. You contact Motorola directly. Search this forum and you'll get tons of information on it
CARRIER Unlocking a T-Mobile phone to be able to use with any carrier can be done after 7 Days of use on a T-Mobile plan. If they recently bumped it up to 40 and that's what customer service told you, then go with that. I've been with them for a few years now and only needed 7 days, but then I was in the store working with one of the sales people and they called in about it. I may have gotten special consideration given the amount of time my wife has had an account with T-Mobile, but I did a carrier unlock after only 7 days.

Yes. Tmo prepaid
Also that's what the tmo rep told me. I still have like 10 days to wait...so I'll report back when it's done
Decided to call and try my luck with another rep. They escalated the unlock for me and did it with the hour.
Unlock app says permanently unlocked now!
You don't need to have it 7 days or whatever. Buy the phone full price, insert the tmobile sim, boot up and carrier unlock right away with the unlock app. Bootloader unlock is with motorola. That's it.
First, you need to activate your phone with a T-Mobile SIM card (you don't need to possess the SIM card, you can even borrow one for a few minutes) and a non-T-Mobile SIM to check if the phone is network locked.
You can check by following these steps:
1. Insert the “non-accepted SIM card” on the phone (Please check if your new SIM Card is activated, if not contact your Mobile Operator in order to activate it).
2. Wait for the phone to load
3. Insert the SIM’s PIN code (4 digits), if asked.
4. Read the message your phone displays, if you need the unlock code or to unlock via the Device Unlock App.
Mod Edit
Based on the message you have, you can contact T-Mobile again and ask them to unlock. Or you can use a third party unlocking service.

This doesnt work.. It says unlock failed.. tried permanent and temporary. Tmobile says theres an unpaid balance but the phones imei is not lost or stolen. The way to request an unlock is the previous owner and the imei # has to make a request. ugh and theres some dude who says he can do it for a fee (clean the imei) im trying to use this on metro and cannot because of the whole tmobile unpaid balance bullcrap
Correct me if I'm wrong. No T-Mobile phone is eligible for unlock unless it's paid off in full and remained on the network for 45 days after. I've unlocked plenty of them after they were paid off and this was almost always the case.
I unlocked my bootloader right after getting my phone. It's not paid off, as I upgraded via JUMP.

Thinking the OP is talking about carrier unlock.
Check what your IMEI's status is in the T-Mobile network with their service here: https://www.t-mobile.com/verifyIMEI.aspx
Note that if the result doesn't with "Congratulations..." you might not be able to unlock your phone.

Ah, got it. It's tricky when "unlock" has multiple meanings, lol! In that case, no, you can't carrier unlock until your phone is paid off
I posted a similar question before I realised there was a thread already on this topic. Can anybody confirm that if you buy a tmo version from Motorola, then what are the conditions for having it unlocked? Is it $100 credit balance (for me that would add $100 to the cost) or immediately on insertion of a TMO SIM or some other conditions? Does anybody have any experiences they can report? Thanks
I can tell you I just tried getting a tmobile variant unlocked (375 outright, I have AT&T) and had a buddy with a tmobile account make the purchase and put his active sim in it and they would not unlock it. Stated it had to be on tmobile network for 40 days. He called multiple times and argued it's already paid off but they wouldn't budge. So I returned it. Had to eat a 50 fee for returning it. I chalk it to a lesson learned.
I was going to buy the phone from the Motorola website for $500 so $375 is a good deal. The problem is while I have a tmobile SIM card on a prepaid account I don't live in the US and while I'm travelling there soon I won't be on the network for 40 days. so I guess it won't be unlockable while I'm there and certainly not once I'm gone.
I wonder what the unlocking Services online are like? Has anybody had any experiences to relate

There is also a temp unlock through the unlock app. Still fully sim unlocked but for only a short time. Then if you do come back to the US for 40+ days you can try for the permanent unlock.

OK _ just got off both a phone call and chat session with TMO support. Basically the phone has to be on their network for 2 billing cycles and then you can call them to unlock it. That applies even apparently to the $3/month plan. I do have somebody who could do that but they would have to send the phone to me and I am not sure you can do that with its LiOn battery inside.

How am I unlock my pixel 3a XL to all carrier

I have a locked mobile (T-mobile) , how am I unlock my pixel 3a XL to all carrier
I would love to receive step by step answers whenever possible Help!
Thanks in advance,
Reuven
You must get T-Mobile to carrier unlock the phone. They are the only ones that can do it. However, if you still owe money on the phone, you will have a hard time getting them to agree to unlock it. Honestly the most successful method I have seen is to reach out to the main T-Mobile account via a direct message on Twitter. Explain that you need to get a carrier unlock and see what they say.

thanks a lot for the answer
1. I don't have a T-MOBILE sim
2. Is there no way to replace / override the existing operating system
3. Is there no software capable of hacking the system

The first hurdle before you can do anything with the os is bootloader unlock. That it's not possible work a T-Mobile phone without T-Mobile doing it. Good luck.

I hate that a person's banner doesn't appear in the OP, so I didn't realize you were in Tel Aviv. Again, I think the best option is to reach out to T-Mobile on Twitter and explain that you acquired this phone, but you live in Tel Aviv and need them to sim-card unlock the phone so that you can use it on a local service. They may give you a hard time if there is still money owed on the phone (ie bought on an installment plan), but it the phone was bought outright, or if you pay off the balance on the phone, they definitely should sim-card unlock it.
Once it is sim-card unlocked, you can then bootloader unlock it which will give you the ability to install custom ROMs, kernels, etc.
Buy an unlock code from any service out there. Slam your new SIM card in and input your unlock code
Anyone know more ways to deal with the issue?

Can you recommend a reliable site that knows how to service and not just take the money
you can try to merge the backup from a fully unlocked phone using qpst program and upload it via edl mode to your phone

Dirty secret.... Call and tell them you're someone either famous or C level of a company and you're going to be landing in whatever country and you need your phone unlocked immediately to use a local sim for business purposes. If or when they question the account name it's just the account of your assistant to obscure your identity. Major Telecoms won't tell you about this but I can tell you 100% from experience this is how things work. Well I can't at least say with at&t, Verizon, TMobile and Sprint. As in I've seen the tools with my eyeballs.

You can send me step by step how to do this to my email
[email protected]
I thank you very much
Small note:
My ROOT and BOOTLOADER are locked
So I'm kind of in the same boat. I just purchased one that is sim locked to Verizon. I have seen things about leaving a Verizon sim in it for 24 hours and it will unlock, luckily my work phone is Verizon so I'm testing this theory.
But can anyone tell me if this is permanent? Will it survive factory resets and such?
