[Q] Help im stuck!! Odin not detecting phone - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys i have a bit of a problem. I tried rooting my phone with the one touch root and when i went to turn off my phone and restart it, it would get stuck on the Samsung screen. This worried me for a bit until i read more and found out how to get into download mode.
so now my phone goes to download mode, however Odin does not recognize my phone. when i plug my cable into my phone i hear the "ding-dung" sound, but nothing shows up. Ive read about trying other cable, but none of the other cables i tried worked.
And the current driver i have on my computer is the one from the Samsung website, and i also have.
what could my problem be?

The first time you use Odin it has to get more drivers from the net. Check in to see if it is still looking for those. That can take like 30 minutes sometimes. Then if it is anything like my laptop Odin only works in that usb port.
Check this and also try another cable and other ports until you see Windows searching for drivers.

Had that exact same problem Saturday night.
It was recommended to me to go watch the qbking videos, which I did.
He has a walk through on using Odin and it took me through the process step by step and once I figured out how to use it was very pleased with how easy it was.
Other things I noticed were:
a) don't use stock Samsung Cable (I believe this is emphasized in the video)
b) get Odin ready to use with the .pit file and the .md5 file and THEN plug the phone in. I don't know why this affected me, but it did.
c) try every USB port available. Some of mine didn't work.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1009997
This is the link to the qbking thread. Good Luck! That's incredibly unnerving until you see that boot screen again!

You can also try downloading the Samsung USB drivers from their support site. Install those drivers, then plug the phone in and see if you have better results.
This is probably covered in those videos, but thought it was worth mentioning...

Sometimes rebooting the pc helps

Just realized I posted twice. I wasn't really trying to pad post stats...
As far as downloading the drivers, I believe the videos DO cover this. Just make sure you get the right drivers. I actually downloaded both because the 64 bit drivers didn't work with my 64 bit Windows 7, don't know why. The 32 bit on the other hand worked without problems.

Thanks for all the help guys. I finally got it working, and i flashed Syndicate on it, and have the Emotionless beast theme on it.
so far im loving my rooted phone, and now i know pretty much everything i need to know about rooting my phone. lol

[Q] I'm Convinced my phone is Bricked

I just purchased this phone (i9100) last night after a long travel to track it down. today I simply wanted to update the firmware on it and I was using Odin3 v1.85 to do it but It failed and stayed like that for an hr with the phone in the download mode. I finally disconnected the phone and started it back up and it said " firmware upgrade encountered" with the phone on icon on the left a yellow triangles in the middle and a computer on the right side. Almost looks as though the symbols and words are cutting off the screen.
I can boot into the Download mode but the computer does not recognize the phone anymore nor does Odin or Kies. So I cant even attempt to re-flash the damn thing... I'm so upset right now and feel like taking a hammer to this damn phone...
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I've don't everything when it comes to drivers uninstalling Kies, using other computers without Kies installed, different ports and cables. I've done it all as far as i can see.... also I cant return the damn thing as i didn't buy it from a store. so im **** out of luck if i cant get this working.... PLS HELP!
Are you sure you are downloading the right version of the drivers? I ask because it sounds like you bought the international galaxy s II and not the Epic 4G Touch but you asking the question in the E4GT forums.
The phone is Sprint branded and so is the box.

Okay, so for future reference... you have the D710, NOT the i9100. (The i9100 is the international SGS2, different enough from the Epic Touch that you can't flash i9100 firmware.)
That said, if you can get into download mode then all is not lost!!
Restart your computer. Also, when you use odin, be sure to go into your Windows task manager and close any Kies tasks/processes that may be running in background. You only need Kies for the drivers it provided when you installed it onto your pc.
Suggest you put your phone into download mode, and follow the instructions in the 1st post in this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282420
I tried the instructions in the link. however, the problem seems to that the phone is not being detected by the computer or the drivers dont seem to be working. I tried this on my other computer and while the phone is in download mode it is still not being detected by the computer or odin.... what can be causing this as before the firmware update that failed it was being detected perfectly fine.
I pretty much have the exact same problem as posted here.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I was never able to get any computer to recognize the phone in that state. I was able to take it to the Sprint store and they ended up giving me a new one for a small service charge. Since you didn't get it at a store I would contact Samsung and give them the story that cooza suggests in the thread you linked. Good luck and post back if you ever get it working, I am still curious as to what was wrong.
The only thing that might be hampering your effort is Kies might be still active. I overlooked this instruction (as was mentioned in a previous post). Before starting Odin or connecting your phone go into Windows task manager (ctrl/alt/del) and click on processes. Scroll down and you'll probably see a Kies process running. End that process, then try it again.
.....
Sorry but Kies has been completely uninstalled from this computer and the other computer.
are you plugging the phone before or after entering download mode?
I did both before and after to see if that would make a difference, but no go.

I thought you needed the drivers from Kies?
.....
I installed the drivers without it, I downloaded the drivers for my model phone from another member who suggested it.
Try deleting the drivers that u have and reinstalling kies. Use different usb ports.
Sent From My Evo Killer!!!
i would reinstall kies..... or if you have a linux box maybe try heimdall > http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265 to flash
Guys, I tried Ubuntu but with no luck. The computer simply will not detect the phone. At this point I believe only Samsung can fix or replace this. I will contact them tomorrow and see. Maybe they will do it for free or maybe they will charge a small fee (small I hope if any) but thank you all for the help.

Please help, odin doesnt recognize, no recovery, please help.

I can get into download mode, but odin doesn't recognize, the only other screen i get too sdays "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in kies and try again, but Kies cant connect to it, am i screwed? Please help this all happened from changing my screen density, i cant find anyway too restore, i'm not a noob and am in desperate help, i'm gonna be soo bummed if i brick, but i have a feeling if i can get too download mode, there must be a way too restore it.
BbbYou say no recovery, but you should have at least stock recovery I think. Try holding volume up and power, is you can get in, restore to stock from there.
If doesn't work I would start by reinstalling the drivers or try a different computer.
You'll be fine.
Also you should state you rom, what you did before, rooted, etc

I flashed the newest version of Roman BB's AOKP CM9 Kang and tried to change the density, i went too restore my nandroid and it froze before it finished, I tried odin and the first 2 times it recognized but both froze before the end. im kinda couch surfing so now i'm incredibally screwed without a phone, please help.

Roman bb's most updated AOKP, i changed the screen density and when i went to reboot it bootlooped, so i tried restoring a nandroid wich failed, tryed again, and now i cant get too recovery, i can only get too download mode, so i tried using odin too go back too stock, it failed almost at the end, twice, now i cant get odin to recognize my phone and it wont turn on, the only thing i can do is get too download mode, and too the thing saying use kies recovery, which does nothing because it won't connect. I'm at a total lost, i'm so scared i lost my only source of income, at this point in my life, if i dont have a phone, i dont have work or food or a warm place too sleep. Please anyone with any ideas please help.
I hate to be the one to tell you this but you're probably bricked. The giveaway is if you have problems in Odin at data.img:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1504808
Will recommend that if you have further questions to post in that thread.
When going from ICS to anything else you should use ODIN to go back to stock. Anything else and you're risking a brick. More here:

Hope this helps.
One quick question - which phone are you using and which usb cable for odin?
Be sure that using the original usb cable during odin.

I've never heard that one before. What do you think is unique about the stock micro-usb cable?
micro usb cable is not unique. There's standard size of micro usb and pin numbers, etc. But based on the product, it's not fit well each other.
One example is old LG micro usb cable is not going well with Samsung phones.
Of course, I tried this by myself and it always fails. But original micro usb cable which comes together with phone, it never failed.

Yeah now that you mention it I realized my nook color micro usb cable has a longer metal end-piece than my E4GT, and won't connect properly. I thought the length of the metal prong would have also been standardized. Go figure.

This is the problem unless you flashed a gb kernel/recovery first. You should not do anything in ICS recovery.

Its true not all cables are the same, but the funny part is from the beginning of OG Epic days we figured out quick the only thing you should do with the stock cable is charge... its garbage. Maybe the new model is better, havent tried it, but it looked pretty much the same, thin little thing... I use my 4 year old BBerry cable, about as thick as a cat-5... never had an issue. But yeah, try new drivers, cable, diff PC, use a USB that is physically part of the Motherboard of the PC (desktop)... all these things help with the shoddy drivers, etc... you may get lucky...

But you said you did attempt a restore through CWM after the bootloop, correct? If you did and you're having problems you *may* have bricked. Using ODIN is a surefire way to confirm whether you did or not. If you didn't attempt anything through CWM while having CM9 installed then you may not be bricked but are obviously still having issues. As it has been said before - and quite often - CWM at your own risk; ODIN is believed to be the safest option.
Regardless, if you're having problems and the USB cable doesn't fix it I'll still recommend trying to get back to a GB stock ROM by ODIN. At the worst you've lost what you have done since the last backup, since you can restore that from the backup once you get back to GB. With so many bricked phones lately it may be best to err on the side of caution this time...
I've tried everything mentioned, except a different pc, i tried linux, on my pc odin doesntr recognize my phone, , but i just went and plugged a flash fdrive in so now im thinking my computer is having usb problems, so im gonna try another computer, i also made a usb jig to reset the odin counter too take it too sprint but it didnt work... i'm so confused and screwed without my phone. Thank you everyone for trying too help. Any more ides are greatly appreciated! Thanks soo much guys!
ive had this problem before and basically my phone would turn on but no signal sd card didnt work wouldent read in computer but if you cant get it to work and have fifty bucks u can go to mobiletechvideos.com and it will take about mabe 3-4 days mine took a week since i sent on a friday but it costs fifty bucks and the only thing when i came back that wasnt working 100% was the picture gallery. true him if it comes down to it
Well, since you're getting the firmware upgrade error, I'm gonna bet your phone is bricked. That happened to me, I finally took it to the Spring repair center and they couldn't fix it, so they swapped my phone out.

Sprint Epic 4G Touch Appears Bricked
My Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch will no longer connect to my computer (also tried another computer and different usb cable), after a failed attempt to upgrade to ICS 4.0. The phone will not load up now to 'normal' operating mode.
It will only come up to the message:
"Firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." I can no longer get into Recovery or Download modes. At least none that work. (See below)
I also built and tried the USB jig solution, which does power on the phone, but it then comes up and says:

[Q] Bricked Galaxy Nexus GSM 16GB (GT-I9250M)

Hey Everyone,
I'm hoping someone can help me find a way to un-brick my Galaxy Nexus GSM 16GB (GT-I9250M). Before you call me an idiot, I'll have you know I wasn't flashing it or anything. I was simply listening to music when the screen went all glitchy and the sound started looping. Then the phone attempt to restart, but mid way through booting, it would glitch out again. It would repeat this until I finally pulled the battery. When I got home, I tried to get it into Fastboot mode or Download/Odin mode. Neither of which worked. I was running the stock version of android. If I recall correctly, it was running 4.0.2.
So in a nutshell, here's the status of the phone:
Regardless of what I do, Fastboot mode and Download/Odin are not accessible.
No matter what combination of buttons I press, the screen always shows: Phone ... Yellow Alert Triangle ... Computer
Using Galaxy Nexus Toolkit or Wug's Toolkit, the phone is not listed under Fastboot or ADB devices.
While the phone is plugged in via USB without a battery, I see device manager adding and releasing an OMAP4440 device every second or so.
When I plug in the phone (with the battery) in via USB while its off, it will turn itself on showing the alert screen mentioned above.
ODIN is about the only app/toolkit I've used that "sees" the device.
Using ODIN, I have tried various stock images mentioned in the forums. All of them have either failed or get stuck on "NAND Write Start!!"
I've read dozens of posts on various forums but I could not find a concrete solution, so I'm appealing to you guys for help. Any help would be great appreciated.
Thank you!
Based on what you have described, even if I could get it working again, I would try to get a warranty replacement, provided that is an option. Sounds like a hardware failure. Like I said, even if it somehow started working again, I wouldn't trust it.
1. first off you need to download "Odin 3 v1.85" here
2. also download CF-Root-GGN_YAKJU_ICL53F-v5.1 here
3. open Odin in your computer
4. where it says PDA put CF-Root-GGN_YAKJU_ICL53F-v5.1
5. Power on the device and when you have the "phone triangle pc screen" connect it to your PC.
6. ???
7. PROFIT!!!

You're probably right. I still have my Nexus S which I can fall back to resort to this. I will try what nonione has suggested, and if that doesnt work, I will likely look to replace the phone.
I've never seen a samsung phone that couldn't be recovered (other than physical or water damage).
You can easily get the phone back with odin (no you do not have to be in odin mode on the phone).
Study up on it....tons of threads, use search.
Never seen a bricked Samsung....ever...and I've had at least 6 or 8 different models.
(edit)
There;s quite a bit more to it than nonione tried to walk you thru.
You will need the correct drivers on your computer first...buncha other steps too.
Study hard before you try odin.
Google, "Galaxy Nexus OMAP Unbricker". Download it and when the OMAP devices comes up in the Device Manager quickly right click on it and install the driver includes with the OMAP download. Once the driver has installed run the .bat file in the download. Should go to Fastboot now.

That's easy to repair, dude
That's not a brick, that's just telling you, that the firmware files are corrupt, all you need, is a jig, a Windows PC, Odin and chainfires ODin files
I can walk you through, on Teamviewer, if you want. I've had this problem quite a lot (Not on the GNex, though) I jope I get it, so I get a GS 3 ^^
I do have the same phone with the same problem..but currently out of the country, so cant get it replaced.. I get no yellow triangle my phone is completely dead..I tried the omap flash no luck..please let me know if the omap flash tool worked for you..
Hey guys,
So a bit of an update. I tried using Odin to flash. None of the files suggested worked for me. I also tried the OMAP flasher. While it "did something" without erroring out, it did not switch to fastboot mode for me. My phone is simply stuck in that yellow alert state. So now, i'm going to try using a Jig as familyguy59 has suggested. I saw a video of one guy use one to fix the exact same issue as I'm having, albeit with his Samsung Galaxy 2, but it looks promising. I purchased one a couple days ago and it should come soon. I'll let you guys know how it goes.
Hey Guys,
So I tried the jig i bought. No dice. I'm pretty disappointed. : / I guess off to Samsung it goes... I just don't have any luck with Samsung products.

Epic 4g softbricked?

I had a SPH-D700 that was deactivated (Sprint) and I decided to root it. I did a bit of research and found that you needed Odin to root it. I downloaded Odin and the CWM tar for the Epic 4g and then put the phone in download mode. i took a bit of work to get Odin to recognize it, but it eventually did. I followed qbking77's video from there. it hung on SetupConnection for a really long time though. I panicked and unplugged it. Now it won't boot except when in download mode. When I try to boot into recovery or boot regularly, there's no splash screen, just a "phone--!--computer" symbol. I have tried almost everything. I would really appreciate some help.
Get a heavy duty cable like a Blackberry one and odin cwm and like the video said flash the FC09 prerooted ROM. What happened was your cable is a little flaky.
I've used two cables so far, but it still could be... I start looking for a different one I guess

if you cant get it to appear in odin, try downloading heimdill, I find 1.11 the easisest to use,. Extract the fc09 rom. Now go to the drivers folder in the zip, open up zagdig, Turn on all l devices under the options menu. Look for samsung composite, or somethign similar. nnstall driver and then go to the frontend. Next put all the parts in and flash with the blackberry cable
you will find the download here http://www.glassechidna.com.au/products/heimdall/
note that the updates past 1.11 has a large change to the gui and maybe confusing, 1.11 is much simpler and as effective as the later update. Use that one for simplicity.

[Q] Unrooted GS3 with mobile odin. Broken now and can't fix

Long time listener first time caller (this is my first post here) I'm going to try not to leave out any details. Bear with me.
I rooted my Tmobile Galaxy s3 for the first time and installed CM10.1. It was great for a few months, then it started getting glitchy. So I would flash the nightly release and it would be fine for a while. I decided to unroot and start fresh. It was then that I discovered the PC wouldn't recognize the device. I followed a youtube tutorial to unroot with Mobile Odin. I extracted and flashed a stock image called Tmobile_GS3_SGH-T999_4.0.4 after clearing counter with Triangle Away.
Well it seemed to go well, unrooted my device, but now the OS is incomplete. No internet app, messaging won't work at all, and it keeps crashing and freezing. The usb port is still not working so I cannot root with my computer, and the flash counter still says 1 and status says modified.
Tmobile sent me a new one on warranty, but I'm really worried they're gonna charge me 500 bucks because it's "modified". I have a few days before I have to send it back, Is there anyway that I can fix this without connecting it to my computer? Any help is GREATLY appreciated.
Thanks

First thing to do is to put the phone into DOWNLOAD mode to TEST it and see if ODIN will recognize it.
If Odin recognizes it then there is NO need to send it back to Samsung, all it needs is a proper Odin flash.
Just because when all those missing apps and the usb had issues it does not necessarily mean that Odin will not recognize the phone.
If your computer is not working or you don't have a windows computer find a relative or a friend who has one.
Even a laptop computer would do just fine.
Good Luck!
Tried that
Thanks for your response, I have tried connecting it to Odin in download mode and it still will not see it. I really don't know what the problem could be. the usb used to work fine and there has been no physical damage.

Try a different usb cable and or plug usb into different port,
if that fails, re-install the Samsung usb drivers for the phone.
Remember, if the phone goes into download mode 99.999% of the time the phone
can be flashed successfully using Odin.
The main reasons for usb issues in "download mode" are either loose connection to computer's usb ports,
usb cable intermittant or the Samsung usb drivers in the computer are corrupted in one way or another.
Thanks again
I guess I should have put this in my first post. I have tried 2 different cables in every port on 2 different computers. I have re installed the drivers multiple times as well. Also the new phone they sent me is recognized just fine.

You are in a tough spot. I don't know if you have the stock recovery or not but if not you can either download the stock rom on the phone again...you know the best way although unethical really...being that the usb port is down is to re root it and flash a rom like the gt 1300 or whatever the international version is and intentionally hard brick your phone. Hard brick meaning won't even turn on withOut jtag and that even just clears everything out and reloads software like from the factory. If the phone won't boot up then there's no way for the person to tell its been modified. Majority of the time samsung doesn't get the damaged phones its some idiot making 8 bucks an hour to refurbish phones. That's what I would suggest you do being that the counter is still saying one flash
tmobile s3 running wicked. best rom i've ever used
Pretty sure I'm on stock recovery. it does give me an option to "apply update from external storage"
Thanks for all your help, I'll try to flash the stock rooted rom through the stock recovery although i'm not optimistic.
I will check out the wicked rom you mentioned, although I am a little hesitant to root my new one after this ordeal.
but how do I re root it if I have no usb or custom recovery?

If you can get your phone to boot normally with any stock rom rooting will not be a problem at all.
If you get the phone working and booting properly you would be very lucky but from reading
everything you have wrote so far I highly doubt that you can successfully flash any rom at all
unless you have forgotten to tell us something.
Don't worry about rooting, worry about getting the phone to boot and work properly with stock rom.
yep. running stock recovery. hopeless?

I never said a word about stock recovery, I said STOCK ROM.
Invest in a JIG, it puts your phone into download mode instantly even if you cannot
do it manually with the three buttons as long as the phone is not completely dead.
You can buy a jig for less than $4.00 shipped on eBay, it's great little tool.
All you do is remove the battery from the phone and put it back in then simply plug
the jig into the usb port then in a couple seconds it will be in download mode then you
can unplug the jig and the phone is ready to be odin flashed..
Remember what I said before, just because the usb did not work with some
rom you flashed it does not mean that it will not work for download mode.
The jig was one of the best investments I have made when I started using these samsung android phones.
Once in download mode it will allow you flash the stock or stock rooted Jellybean 4.1.1 rom.
This is my best advice.
I am not having a problem getting into download mode, I will take your advice and buy a jig though in case I ever need it. Again, thanks for all your help, I think I may have to send it back and hope for the best.

Before sending it back, if I were you I would find a friend or family member who has
a windows computer and just for the hell of it install the usb drivers in the computer
just to see for sure that while in download mode and connected usb cable if Odin still
is not lighting up the [COM:xx] top left rectangle on Odin screen.
I have odin flashed many phones dozens of times in the past 3 years and I have yet
to come accross one which goes into download mode but odin is not reconized
unless there is something wrong with the windows computer or usb ports and drivers.
That only happens as I said before, if there is something wrong with the drivers,
usb ports and or usb cables or some other malfunction in the windows computer.
Just think, if it works no need send the phone to samsung plus you would have learned
something too.
I did try my other computer with the same results, tomorrow I will try it with my girlfriends laptop, I am starting to think something happened to the usb jack. It didn't work before I unrooted it either, that's why I used Mobile Odin. I am all about learning this stuff though. I plan to root every new phone I get, this has just been a little frustrating.

This is the first I heard that the usb did not work before and the usb socket might be broke.!!!
In that case since you cannot use the Wifi in your phone to transfer and install apps since it cannot boot normally
(unless I am missing something again) and you cannot use usb and it would not even help to remove the external
sd and copy any apps at all since you would have no way to install the apps.
Then you are right, you have to send it back, exchange it and hopefully you can come up
with a good enough excuse why it's not working so samsung will not charge anything )which I doubt)
I must not have been clear, I can use the phone. it makes calls, the wifi works, i can use third party messaging and browser apps. again, there has been no physical damage. the socket worked a few weeks ago when I rooted it. I only noticed it not working when I went to unroot it.
So basically it sounds like there is no way to root or install custom recovery without usb, correct?
