I tried this originally on my desire, then in my wifes wildfire S to great success.
Go in to the phone app
type in *#*#4636#*#*
Select 'Phone information'
scroll down to the bottom
in the 'set preferred network type' select 'GSM auto (PRL)'
then press back to return to your home page.
The wife doesn't use her phone much, ie a phone call or two a day, after a DAY of being unplugged from the mains the battery was still registering at 100% !
This doesn't affect the phone's functionality at all, it still allows for you to connect to a 3G network, what it does is connects to 2G when the 3G signal is weaker for calls and texts.
You may get varying results but every phone I've tried it on has boosted the battery by hours when idle.

Hi guys, just to show you how much better this setting is, my wife's wildfire S normally needed charger every 2 days.
As you can see it's passed 2 days and it is still registering over 80% remaining battery.
I'll update when it finally dies, which should be in about 8 days
tried this on my wildfire s and afterwards it just kept turning my network on and off.. Switched back to wcdma preferred
I haven't seen that before, you might be in a weak 2g signal area thats why it's constantly trying to resolve the radio.
I assume this will work for some ( I live in an area that is very well covered by orange) and not for others depending on your network coverage.
Does it still do it when you switch to GSM only? It will kill your internet speed, but just to test if it's the 2G mast or not, then switch back to WCDMA preferred if it works best on your phone.
If GSM only is okay, you can use widgetoid 2.x and make a short cut to the normal settings options to switch between gsm only and WCDMA which will help, but I find it a bit of a pain in the perverbial behind.
As with most tips its not a one size fits all, however I've done it on 5 phones ( all HTC) which has improved the battery.

as for me, I have really a lot of problem regarding the battery life.
Today it was 100% and after 8 hours just 55% left.
Without using any wireless conection, and just 2 text.
Any way, maybe you can tell us, how is the wildfire S form your configured, homescreen widget?
which battery tool do you use?
I just made again a reset, and I will try to set GSM only, coz I do not use internet at all.

She's got it extremely basic, no widgets, no weather nothing, there's only 4 shortcuts on all her home screens, mostly black background (static picture).
No battery apps or task killers are on it.
All radios, GPS etc are disable, screen brightness on auto ( however I usally leave it around 20% for better battery performance)
It is never connected to the internet, she uses it just as a phone. I'm quite impressed with the battery life she gets.
I'm a bit curious, if she just used it at the most basic level, than why would she get a smartphone?

Just a quick update, the phone has made it to over 6 days stand by and the 30% energy saving has only just kicked in.
What I wanna know is, is there a way to log (appart from logcat) what's going on it the background. Granted she doesn't use it a lot (mostly as a personal radio and because it was a free upgrade to answer the previous question) but if you look the angle of decline increases after use when surely it should sharply drop and then continue on the same curve?
Nevermind.
This means her phone is up to 151ish hrs standby and still going, I'm gonna have a few more tweaks and see if I can get it anywhere close to the times quoted on the HTC site:
Standby time:
WCDMA: Up to 570 hours
GSM: Up to 360 hours
Infact (sorry i think outloud when I'm typing) how the hell do they think you'll get BETTER battery life on WCDMA? No chance unless you live under the mast and never leave the house.
I think for my next test I'll put it on WCDMA only and see how it affects the battery.
Also the battery doesn't have a very high capacity. That could also be the problem. I heave heard the hd2 I think has the same battery size but a much higher capacity.
Hi, I got my WS last week, and so far I cannot complain about battery. I am using it on GSM only, no data, bluetooth on, I'm going trugh an average of 40 calls a day, and in the evening I still have about 60 % of battery left. I am pretty sure that that won't be the case if I use mobie data or WiFi though.

I just can agree, coz even I made a test put the WS on GSM only, and it seems reallly to having more battery life.
As for now, just to have the usual use, 5-10 text 3 calls a day a bit wlan, i can use it for now almost 5 days, which I think it is ok.

If you connect to the internet on your phone through your network provider don't switch to gsm only as 3g signals are much much faster. If you only connect to the internet when there's a wifi signal then set it to gsm only to save the battery.

i switched to "GSM auto (PRL)" as amraving said in first post. i am using 3g only for sending sms through app called free sms sender and for update weather. so internet speed is not my priority. hope it will works fine.
First time I read this I thought this is in setup, didnt know there was a secret menu. I just activated it now then I got full bars than just GSM only. thanks buddy.

No problem, I set mine to gsm only and I've noticed a fairly big difference with battery life, can last a few days on idle, not to bad with moderate wifi use either.

There has been a lot of posts here about battery drain with varying theories about why many people experience this.
My Dopod D810's battery usually lasts me a day before it finally complains and shuts down around 11:00pm.
During this time I had been using Exchange activesync to push email to my device. However we do have a Blackberry enterprise server at work so I decided to remove exchange and install Blackberry in order to see what differences there were.
Imagine my surprise when I found with Blackberry rather than Exchange that my battery is still at 70% when it normally would have been switching off. It has been like this now for over a week. My usage has been normal during that time and there have been no other changes made,
Has anyone else experienced this? I would be interested to hear from anyone who has. Perhaps this is an explanation?

That's probably 'cos of how MS's Push Mail works, although it only transfers data when really needed, it also pings the server at an interval( default each 8 mins ) just to check if the connection is still alive( if not it'll re-establish it ).
BB doesn't need to( but it does need to be supported by the carrier ).
At least that's what I read.
just a quick post to say that I think the battery drain - for me - is worse when I changed ROM, I use push email for my old ROM and the drain was normally 3 days now with this ROM I find I charge every day. I am doing nothing different from the previous ROM
I have tried several WM6 ROMs by now, and all seem to have the same problem: I get a MASSIVE battery drain, when I use ActiveSync Pushmail over UMTS connection. Also the device and battery gets warm, if not to say HOT.
I tried already different Radio ROMs 1.4x and 1.50.08, still the same.
I would lose about 20% capacity per hour.
However, if I configure the phone to use only GSM bands, there is almost no battery drain.
Any ideas on this? I use UMTS quite a lot for browsing/email and would need pushmail as well.

Same issue here.
I live in the USA and last month I went to Spain and there I was using Movistar as my cell provider with a Movistar simcard everything was working great (UMTS,Activesync Pushmail,videocall etc...) but man like you said,once the phone was switching from GSM to 3G the device starts craving battery like you wouldn´t believe plus the temperature of the battery was kind of outrageous.
So I switched to GSM and everything back to normal in Spain and in the USA,I don´t know what to say other than 3G and Pushmail drain a lot.
I have noticed this with every rom.

Same story here. I live in the Netherlands with the Orange version of this phone and no matter which rom I use, it always drains rapidly when i used a 3g connection. So after I browsed with a 3g connection I switch back to GSM for push mail etc and to stop the draining.
Hi, I have recently installed the new HTC_SPA_2.03.412.2 rom wich cames with Radio_Signed_Diamond_52.51.25.26_1.09.25.23, and now the battery life has been reduced to less than 6hrs in stand by and it is heating a lot (previouslly it only got hot and with poor battery life when WIFI was on)
I have a US Diamond originally unlocked phone and here we have 850/1900 band.
Has anyone had similiar experience? Wich radio do you recomend?

I'm not sure but may be I'm living same problem its draining. I'm not sure because I started to use push mail same time with this Radio.
Pushmail+3G is really a horrible battery drain in general. No wonder. Data connection is up all the time and a PING is sent every 15 seconds from push server (if you use Z-Push as I do).
Option A: disable 3G for most of the time. If you surf enable 3G.
Option B: use 1.08.25.20 which gives me the best pushmail + 3G battery life so far. I always go back to 1.08.25.20
P.S. I think most people from the radio thread aren't using pushmail. So I would take their battery life tests with a huge grain of salt.
No, absolutely no battery drain.

Here in Europe (Netherlands), same radio ver and Z-Push with 3G on.
If I do not receive / make calls I can _easily_ get 48hours out a full charge.
If I turn 3G off (as I also do most of the time) I can get 2 days without recharging even with busy work days (SMSing and calling quite a lot).
If your diamond is also generating a lot of heat, I'd say it isn't the reception or radio, but a process / program on the ROM is using the cpu at full strength all the time... then the battery won't last long whatever you do.
If I run TomTom on the battery (full time CPU and GPS usage) with the phone turned off, I can drain my full battery in 2 hours .
the radio works fine for me, and if you use push mail of course the battery will drain much faster...
what is push mail? download email with pop3?

I went to Option B, battery performance is awesome, about 1,5 - 2 days.
Same here [Europe, HSDPA, Exchange mail sync always on]: awful battery life with 1.09.25.23 on the last Dutty and new PDACornerIllusion v.3 ROMs.
I usually go back to 1.08.25.20 after each new radio test but this time running 1.11.25.1 for the last few days and so far very happy with both signal level and battery life.

for me too , best radio for Romania
same here, 1.09 it's pretty good, with normal usage i can get to 3-3,5 days.
(some wifi, some push mail, sms & calls) but not through 3g, i've turn it off..

it drains battery rly fast...with high usage:listening musi for about 2hours with volume set to max, surfing internet during 30minutes, sending some sms...without 3g, then its down !
tomorrow it's my 4-th day, and yesterday i've listened to music like 30min, and sms/call /wifi , today i used the wifi like 30min, voice like 20min, am 5 sms...
@altcineva2009 : What rom are you using ? Where do you live (country) ? And is your 3G set to ON ?

i'm using the latest official rom, country: Romania, operator: Vodafone, 3g is off, i turn it on only when i need it

I'm suspecting that this radio (1.09.25.23) is not a quad band radio, and it does not support 850MHz band. Open your dial pad and dial *#*#364#*#* and look at the "Band" field, it should show either "3: 850" or "2: PCS" (1900MHz band)
I have 1900MHz towers around my place in South Bay Area, but the signal is significantly weaker than the 850MHz ones. The end result is that it drains the battery faster.
Obviously we don't need 4G or 3G running when we're just walking about town waiting for phone calls, emails, or texts. Is there any way to reduce battery drain by turning off the 3G EVDO radio and falling back to 1xRTT, in a similar way to how we currently turn off 3G UMTS/HSDPA on an iPhone and fall back to EDGE to preserve battery life?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I have been thinking about this and would like to know as well.
Just because 3G GSM is not as efficient with battery life as 2G does not necessarily mean the same problem exists for cdma technology, however I do not know for certain and its a good question

Indeed. I don't know. And that's why I'm asking!
A few things might improve battery life:
-Turn off constant GPS; it chews up battery when not needed. It's on by default with the EVO and queried every 3 hours (default) by Sense UI for weather information. You can get the same information based on Cell Tower triangulation without firing up GPS needlessly.
-Sense UI (according to rumor) uses more power in and of itself than the stock Android GUI.
-Froyo (by virtue of JIT) should be more efficient and therefore consume less battery life as well.
One topic I'm not sure on is whether Android can scale CPU clocks automatically based on need, like mobile CPUs for laptops/netbooks do? If not, it should absolutely be implemented, and that would be my next project..
Coming from a samsung moment to the evo i can say that jumping back and fourth between evdo and 1xrtt cancause battery drain. Really theres no great method to combat this other than using common sense. If your not in need of gps- turn it off. Turn off queing for cell towers as well, while it doesnt consume as much power as the gps it does take some resource to triangulate your location. The only other thing i would say is using setcpu and establishing profiles that suit your needs. I.e. screen off can be the lowest cpu setting while battery at 50% you could set your profiles clock speed to sit at 600-700. But thats all providing an app like setcpu will play nice with the evo.

I manually set my wife's pixi to 1xrtt and her battery life has increased significantly, had to do some hidden code, so perhaps same for evo
It's ##EVDO# in WebOS. Not sure what the code is in Android.
When I'm at school (5 days a week) most of my classes are in a building where I do not get a lot of reception, aka, my battery gets killed by the phone to keep up the signal. I do get reception, around 1-2 bars, but that still drains the battery extremely fast. Is there any app or something that I can do to help reduce the amount of battery drain?
I don't want to put the phone into air plane mode because I can still send and receive text messages, but it's just very slow.
Have you tried putting it in cdma only mode?

You could save a lot of battery life by either connecting to a wifi hotspot (if available) or by turning off background data. The problem your phones having is that it has to turn the gain way up on its cellular radio in order to transmit and receive data. By reducing the amount of background data usage (or off loading it to another network with better signal--i.e. wifi) you'll save a lot of juice.
If you can't do either, there are some things you can do with Tasker to reduce data usage to windows of time instead of always on. May be something to consider.

He's in Canada, so using the GSM model.
Give juice defender a try. It used to almost double the battery life on my old X10 when I worked in a building that I could only get 1 bar at best.

JD sucks on the Nexus, unless it has gotten an update since last month.. WiFi doesn't want to reconnect. I've seen others say the same thing.

I have been using CM10 for awhile and usually find it to be great. However recently I have noticed my phone doesn't seem to last a full day anymore and this is minimal screen time. I updated to CM10.1 (RC2) when it was released, I'm not sure if that contributed or if there's something else I'm missing. I have found the best performance by disabling LTE and using WiFi whenever possible. Still though it lasts 9 hours with about 1h30m screen time. If I use it anymore the battery may only last 5 or 6 hours, and this is just using it for occasional web browsing and some texting.
My service provider is Koodo (Telus) and I live in Burnaby BC, so I usually have a pretty good cell signal.
I have attached some screenshots of my battery usage. This was on a day with only light usage and no music or media used; LTE was disabled and WiFi was on.
Any ideas as to what could be causing this, or if this is normal would be appreciated.

Did you update your bootloaders? If so, you probably have the LK4 modem, I'd try flashing the LL1.
Also, you can download BBS (BetterBatteryStats) from here to help narrow down what drains your battery.
It has been known that CM10.1 has been giving poor battery life ever since the Linux 3.4 kernel rebase. I'm not sure if there is a fix, or if the CM guys are working on it at all... It has been 7 days since the last kernel commit for d2.

I can support this, I am getting about the same battery life as you. Ever since updating to RC2 I have noticed that my battery life has diminished. I have a spare samsung battery, and normally I wake up, boot and go to school and use my phone a fair amount for texting, researching, and music. A full charge will usually support this until around 10-12 hours later, then I change batteries in the evening play more music and web browse. I took a screenshot of my battery history a few days ago, you'll notice that the graph increases without the phone ever being connected to a power source.
Has anyone checked their "Cell Standby" to see if there is any time without signal showing?
If you haven't toggled your LTE off, have a look sometime and let me know. If it is showing a percentage of time without signal, go back to your battery life graph and see if there is any RED in your Mobile Network Signal. If you see time without signal but no red in the bar let me know.
I've got some ideas on why battery life isn't great and I'm trying to build a case for it. Guys who frequent locations with poor LTE (4G) signals are who I'm mostly looking to get data from.
Any information that you guys might have would be very helpful to me. Screen captures are welcome. I've uploaded a couple of myself to show what I am talking about.

Poor signal is one hell of a battery drainer. I would suggest trying different modems to find one that works better in your area.

No no. Modems do not affect this issue at all and with the new phones now a days modems don't play as big of a role as they used to with signal strength. Anyway this issue is bigger than that. CM10.1 isn't reporting 4G low signal strenght correctly. It jumps from -115 at one bar to 0dBm no bars instead of switching over to a 3G signal or showing a value that is accurate like -117dBm.
Flashing back to the M1 release of CM10.1 or even to stock and the handoff from 4G to 3G is seamless. We aren't seeing that anymore with the later released even as early as RC1.

You can see I've put some work into it. Trust me, this isn't a flash a different modem, change network preferences or anything type of issue. I've tried all that before finally starting to gather some screen captures and information on the way the phone is handling it's network signals.
I've also talked about it extensively in the CM10.1 Nightlies thread in the dev section over the last week or two.

Also my original post was asking for anyone who has seen a time with signal recorded under cell standby BUT NOT showing any red in the mobile network status graph. Different than just no signal at all and red showing meaning you have no connection to the carrier at all.

Flashing back to the M1 release of CM10.1 or even to stock and the handoff from 4G to 3G is seamless. We aren't seeing that anymore with the later released even as early as RC1.

You can see I've put some work into it. Trust me, this isn't a flash a different modem, change network preferences or anything type of issue. I've tried all that before finally starting to gather some screen captures and information on the way the phone is handling it's network signals.
I've also talked about it extensively in the CM10.1 Nightlies thread in the dev section over the last week or two.

Also my original post was asking for anyone who has seen a time with signal recorded under cell standby BUT NOT showing any red in the mobile network status graph. Different than just no signal at all and red showing meaning you have no connection to the carrier at all.

If you haven't toggled your LTE off, have a look sometime and let me know. If it is showing a percentage of time without signal, go back to your battery life graph and see if there is any RED in your Mobile Network Signal. If you see time without signal but no red in the bar let me know.
I've got some ideas on why battery life isn't great and I'm trying to build a case for it. Guys who frequent locations with poor LTE (4G) signals are who I'm mostly looking to get data from.
Any information that you guys might have would be very helpful to me. Screen captures are welcome. I've uploaded a couple of myself to show what I am talking about.

I can probably come up with some data, when I'm at work I generally get a low signal, I never toggle LTE, though I live in a town of ~8000 people, far from major centres. I believe we have HSPA+, but I'm generally connected to 3G. Right now, I've had normal battery life, (no increasing), and 0% time without signal, should I ever have <0% I'll message you some data. Thanks for your work!
I can confirm that I'm having this issue as well. I live in a 4G city (Boston), but my high school has practically no 4G reception. I noticed that unless airplane mode is enabled in the school, I have a battery drain of about ~1 per 5 minutes. The battery stats shows certain red areas when the signal is close to 0.
I'm running the latest nightly (5/29), but I'm flashing back to the M1 ROM until this is fixed. If I encounter any issues with this ROM, I'm probably going to flash back to stock.
Hopefully the devs can get on this when they have time.

Battery life has actually improved quite a bit since rc2, but when I'm at school, where the signal is bad (most of the time I get "emergency calls only"), I see faster than usual battery drain as well. I think that this is normal though, because even my old dumbphone drained battery quickly when there was no signal.

Emergency Calls Only and Red in the mobile network history aren't what I'm referring too with my issue.
Those two things would indicate you phone had no cell signal at all to your carrier. I'm talking about being on such a poor 4G signal but still being connected to the Roger's network. It's hard to explain.
Anyway I appreciate your input.

I'm still connected to the AT&T network, but it's a very weak signal when I'm at school.
Just flashed back to stock, and the draining issue disappeared. I guess there's still some issue regarding cell signal that's draining the battery.
I've got the same issue, I thought it was just me. I'm on Rogers
I even lose battery (about 1% every 30 minutes) while plugged in and charging, if I'm listening to music, and checking my phone once every half hour for texts or emails.
The other day at the gym while listening to music and using 1 note taking app, it went from 95% to 15%. When I checked, it said the phone was active for 1 hour and 5 minutes even though I never used the phone.
I'm going to install that bettery battery status app now.
