[Q] Need help with rooting DHD - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello every one,
I have been meaning to root my phone and going through the forum but a bit confusing to me with the different methods that work for different builds etc.
Bellow is my phone specifications:
Desire HD unlocked but branded to VirginMedia UK.
HBoot 0.85.0024
S-ON RL
Radio 26.09.04.11.m2
Android ver. 2.3.3
Kernel Ver 2.6.35.10-g095637
Build number 2.36.351.16
I would like to root it and later install a custom rom but first
what steps should i take to root my phone with the above speck.
Please definite answers would be highly appreciated that would be sure to work
on the above specifications. Step by step instructions would be nice.
Thanks alot

Hi,
If you download THIS FILE - Android SDK, and then install it.
Install the following packages,
Code:
Android SDK Tools, revision 11
Android SDK Platform-tools, revision 5
SDK Platform Android 2.2, API 8,revision 2
SDK Platform Android 2.3.3 API 10, revision 1
Google USB Driver package, revision 4
Android Compatibility package, revision 2
Once downloaded & installed follow Steps 1, 2b & 3 from THIS THREAD
For ease of use its probably best to install the SDK to C:\SDK or similar.

Thanks, would follow the instructions. I presume the the listed files to install are in the for-mentioned Andriod sdk.

Yes you are correct.
They are the required SDK files.

GT-I9000 development limitations without Windows?

Hello
I've been trying to figure out (by googling a *lot*) what the limitations are for non-Windows developers with the GT-I9000. Samsung's SDK is Windows only, but maybe it's not the end of the road?
Some concrete questions:
* Do you need Windows to get an adb session?
* Do you need Windows to root the device?
* Do you need Windows to cross compile native code?
* Does the stock Android SDK from Google work?
* What do you actually loose without Samsung's SDK? E.g. the BONDI API's?
I really want to buy this shiny monster, but I also *never* again want to suffer Windows, and especially not for development.
Best regards / Klas
AFAIK there is no "Samsung SDK"
check this http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html
the sdk is available for windows, osx & linux
hope this helps
My mistake, it's called "Bada SDK". And at least for the GT-I9000 it's for Windows only. Apparently the Bada Linux platform includes support for some novelty API's such as BONDI (to access e.g. device file system from web apps) and these have no support in the regular Android SDK.
I can live without these device specific API's, I just don't want to have to use the Bada SDK to do anything *else*.
Google's SDK is eclipse based and is available for windows, linux and osx like stated above. I'm running it in 64 bit ubuntu (lucid lynx) and have little problems doing so.

How about just running Windows in VirtualBox for the neccessary parts.

I had much problems with trying this under mac os x.
VMware and VirtualBox dont show the i9000 as USB-Device...
My experiences with connecting USB devices to virtualized environments are also poor. Not that it matters much: I am curious what development capabilities you *loose* if you can't/won't use Windows -- not how to run the Bada SDK in a virtualized environment. No one seems to be overly concerned about this (a good sign so I'll go ahead and order the phone.

You don't need the Bada SDK at all, because Bada is a different platform used on other Samsung phones like the Samsung Wave S8500. It's not Android or related to Android, other than both (potentially, in Bada's case) being based on Linux.
the galaxy is running android os from google - the wave is running the bada os from samsung.
as such i think the OP has confused the above fact and thinks the galaxy is running bada hence referring to a "samsung sdk". galaxy s GT-I9000 runs google android, for which google has released a multi platform SDK
The poster may need to be aware that the descriptor for usb detection is broken for it currently, and has been for a little while. It's not really plug and go.
You'll need to follow the usual instructions to setup your android dev, then possibly compile a adb with support for the galaxy s. I hope I can be proven wrong for that though.

Compile abd, why? The old sdk does not see galaxy S but the latest one does. And if you have problems on linux with adb not seeing your phone try running adb with root user.
Thank you guys.
I havn't checked again, but I was under the impression that Bada is the underpinning of Android on I9000.
The only thing left to understand about the vendor's platforms underneath Android is why Google didn't set it all up with Debian packages. A common repo could keep vendor specific variants of components neatly isolated; Isolated and distributable without the fuss of trying to figure out what is compatible with what. I just want to run something like
Code:
apt-get install android-gti9000-dev android-sdk --rootdir=$MY_CHOICE
on my workstation and have the SDK, device sources, other host tools, and IDE plugins installed to some working directory of my choice. That would be great

Can 2.36.207.16 be downgraded?

Hi,
I've got a DHD from O2 Germany (unbranded, can't see any O2 stuff in it), running 2.36.207.16. GingerBreak simply hangs when doing the magic as per jkoljo's thread [1]. What I want to do is install Revolution HD.
Now, while digging that thread, I found a post complaining about that behavior, but the guy (Ginevra) was running 2.37.x [2]. On the next page, 2 people on 2.36.207 report the same issue.
Is this something known? I got my 2.36.207.16 pretty late OTA, I guess after June 1st.
In case it makes any difference, Win 7 x64, got the Android SDK for 2.2, did some development a few months back; it's not added into PATH (so I'm running the adb jkoljo supplied).
Any ideas?
Edit
According to this German forum [3], 2.36.207.16 is O2. Should I take it the phone is branded?
Shouldn't the gingerbreak procedure work even without a goldcard?

Did it. 2.36.207.11 is O2 and I managed to root it and install Revolution HD.
goldcard - http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/how-to-make-gold-card-for-htc-desire-hd/
download and install the newest downgrade-able RUU (2.36.405.8), for example from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824357
I used an EXE image taken from some other place.
follow the ROM guide at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=11557769
follow the Revolutin HD guide at - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=840040
Awesome support from xda! Thank you guys (I also cast the appropriate "thanks" in the appropriate threads )!
doesn't work for me, still i have the same build, DAMNIT!
will try all night long
allright, fixed it with you tip, got the latest rom, downgrade worked at third try (with this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=905003 )
thanx a lot!

Telus HTC Desire HD 2.3.3 Root and Flash

Hello XDA forum!
I've been researching my topic for some time now and I noticed alot of vague information and the only usefull info seemed to be specific to each model... So, I have a Desire HD and my carrier is telus.
1. Is my phone branded or not? (There's not a bunch of telus apps or wallpapers, there is just one telus scene. Also it says HTC on the back where you would expect it to say telus)
2. Can you downgrade the Telus HTC Desire HD running 2.3.3 Gingerbread at this time? If so what tools would you use?
The reason I am doing this is because everything seems to be very vague information that, like stated above, seems to be specific to each post. However all the posts that I've read don't describe the methods used to identify key information or how to troubleshoot what to do if a step doesn't work (ex. Getting $ instead of #)
If someone could post back on this it would aid me greatly. I aim to downgrade, root, and flash Android Revolution HD and possibly a new radio to improve battery life and signal strength (which is non-existent in my basement)
My phone info is...
Android version:
2.3.3
HTC Sense version:
2.1
Baseband version:
12.56.60.25U_26.10.04.03_M

Thanks in advance!
PS. Any additional information you require from me don't hesitate to ask!
Now running Android Revolution HD!!
Ok so I found some key factors in this that I'd like to point out to anyone looking into rooting and flashing a custom rom.
First Downgrade
Settings > About Phone > Software Information > "Build number"
That is what you're looking at when searching for a downgrade. 1.32.405.6 is what you want to be at.
The downgrade guide I used is here.
Remember if your build number is above 2 you'll need to use section 2b and skip 2a
Make sure you download the attached folder at the bottom of the first post and the stock 1.32 ROM (link in section 1)
After this point I had a stock phone with 2.2 Froyo build number 1.32.405.6. My speakers did not work (no sound at all) and I could not connect to the mobile network which alarmed me at first thinking that Telus wouldn't like me hacking my phone or something x3
Second Root
Telus Desire HD - Rooting and Flashing
This was the first guide I tried to follow and it would have worked if it had simply added in that extra file and the commands:
Code:
adb push misc_version /data/local/tmp
adb push fre3vo /data/local/tmp
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/fre3vo
adb shell chmod 777 /data/local/tmp/misc_version
adb shell
./data/local/tmp/fre3vo -debug -start FBB00000 -end FFFFFFFF
Anyways I downloaded the files for this one (the light version since I had previously downloaded the PD98IMG.zip) and skipped to step B.b
I did the temproot successfully but the easy radio tool wouldn't work for me so I just used Visionary+ to permroot and Then I got the superuser request on my phone and the radio finished rapidly.
Went very smoothly after that.
Third Flashing!
Finally the time came when I was ready to flash my shiny new ROM. I read through step C of the above mentioned guide but decided to go through with the proccess mentioned in [ROM] Android Revolution HD™ 6.1.3 since it was more of a do it yourself thing and I like starting clean (it wants you to run superwipe from cwm before flashing the new rom)
I would recommend using a card reader rather than mounting as a disk drive cause it's more reliable.
Hope this helps someone!
Not sure if this has been said or not but:
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/
It's as easy as "download, run" and it works brilliantly!
I suggest you just boot a Ubuntu Live CD (it's not as bad as it sounds, I actually liked it the first time I tried it and now I have it installed by my Windows) and just run the command:
wget http://droid.neolobster.com/roms/aahk-25102011.zip && unzip aahk-25102011.zip && sudo ./hack-ace.sh
Click to collapse
in terminal, press "1" and be afk for 5 mins.
Doesn't erase your data, doesn't format your phone, doesn't downgrade your Android OS. It...it just works!
Good luck with it

I was just about to ask the same question, and if you can return to stock, but then I checked the Advanced ACE Hack Kit (AAHK) thread:

Where it says:
Easy return to stock for AT&T, Telus and WWE CID HTC__001

Yeep! It sure does work I tried it and flashed the android revolution hd rom. Brilliant thanks a lot! Only thing is the sound seems a little different. It is much louder but also has this tinny effect at times. I will patch the cm7 audiofix and see how it goes.
Go to htcdev dot com, you'll find the official way to do it by HTC

can someone make a cwm-version that does not go lock the bootloader? sorry for my bad english ...
Hi
when I install the update, the phone doesn't boot and I have to remove the battery in order to boot into the old version.
My phone:
HTC Wildfire S
Android version
2.3.5
HTC Sense version
2.1
Software number
2.13.401.2
Kernel version
2.6.35.10-ga66971c (11/8/2011)
unlocked using htcdev
rooted using :
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1431969
Any idea why I can't update?
What does the update do? Is there a changlog somewhere?
Thats because you don't have the factory recovery. My advice is to not update. Use the search feature or look down a couple of older threads and you will find a more elaborate answer.

seems htc employs a new compression algorithm for the rom.zip in the ruu. I was not able to extract the image files from it. can please somebody try and confirm?
ArchLinux kde 4.8 (Ark+Zip).

did you run the ruu with wine or how did you get the rom.zip out of the ruu.exe?
I used wine under linux but i tested now with windows 7 64 bit (7-zip is the best way to extract rom.zip) works fine.
PS: Excuse me for my english ...
