[Q] help flashing radio - Desire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi, new desire user here.
Im really confused about flashing radios.
Im scared to try cause I dont wanna brick my phone.
Im using cm7 hboot but in a while I will use the stock desire hboot for a rom as a requirement. and It requires a specific radio which is 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23
my current radio is 32-48.00.32U_5.11.05.14
my questions are:
can I just flash my desired radio via cwm using the stock hboot?I dont know how to flash via fastboot nor adb
by the way my cwm is 2.5.07 I think?as I dont know how to update it to 4.x
anyone?
thanks desire community!

You can flash a radio via Recovery if your HBOOT's cache is large enough. CM7's isn't, the stock one is. Flashing via Fastboot is apparently the saftest way to do it, but I'm not sure why. The radio, I don't believe, is ever required..just recommended so don't bother flashing it if you really don't want to.

If you need to like i did, no problem with stock hboot, don't know about your recovery, i did it with Amon Ra 2.0, just flashed it with no problem,

Flashing radio without enough cache can brick your phone!!! Do not do if you have a small cache partition, like with cm7, data++ or oxygen.!!!
Flashing a radio with fastboot is the safest way, yes. And not really risky. Here you have nice guide about fastboot which should answer nearly all of your questions:
http://androidforums.com/desire-all...fastboot-windows-updated-1st-june-2011-a.html

thanks guys! now I have the radio I want.
my new problem is now I cant seem to find a suitable rom with wireless N support.
haha by router broke so Im using my laptop as a adhoc hotspot
gave y'all thanks!

Some developers recommend a certain radio due to the RIL built into their rom, more information here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=902752

How to upgrade HBOOT and RADIO (S-OFF)

Dear all,
i hope you not hate me because this noobs question...
i use ClockworkMod Recovery v2.5.0.5
and already S-OFF.
now i want to upgrade my Radio and Hboot.
what should i do..?
is it just the same like flashing the ROM..?
thx
download the radio & hboot files that you would like to upgrade to.
rename it to PB31IMG.zip and place on the root of your sd card.
boot into bootloader and it will ask you if you want to update, press up to confirm.
BE SURE TO NANDROID BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING
Quoted from another thread...
willhill said:
FYI, the hboot loop occurs because installing hboot wipes your kernel. Install a kernal and you'll be good to go, no nandroid required.

So make sure you have a kernel or an entire rom ready to flash, as you probably will be looping without it.
thx for your helping answer ...
is there anything else that might change if i upgrade HBOOT or RADIO ? (besides kernel).
Im having a problem updating my radio. Everytime I boot into bootloader it tells me that there is No/Wrong Image
Bump need help solving this

Radios and HBoot images are not to play around with. If you don't know what you are doing this is the EASY way to brick your phone. Read, read, and read some more on what you are doing before you just go screwing with critical elements of your phone.

Downgrade Radio

I am having issues with my phone dropping calls and wanted to downgrade the radio. Is this possible on CM7? I have the latest radio as of today but it also happened on the last few radios. It's not the ROM as I have tried several ROMS and experience the same issue.
Sure thing, just download a radio from here and flash in recovery. If you're also using the CM7 partition layout, use fastboot to flash it

Also as stated above if you have S-off and CM7 partition table use ANDROID FLASHER and flash the radio.img file.
You get the radio.img file by extracting the xx.xx.xx_xx.xx.23.zip file.
Thanks - I can flash easy in recovery (no cm7 table) I just wasn't sure which radios I could flash with the ROM I am using.
The Fastboot method is saver but you need s-off:
fastboot flash radio xyz.img
Fastboot check the verified the image.

You can use any radio really, but to find out what radio works best with your rom, you should ask your rom chef
I usually download from the link already posted above, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=687464. Save it on the root of my sdcard.
In CM7, I then do a reboot by long-pressing the power-button and choosing reboot, then Recovery.
After I have booted into recovery I choose install zip from sdcard and choose that file I downloaded.
Done!
I heard before that if you downgrade your radio, you might lose your GPS, and it aint work again???? Is that right?? And i have another question.
I have the latest radio, and i want to go back to froyo, is it ok ?
Thanks in advance.
Just flash in recovery

Yes, but you might need to change the ril. Frankly, I was lucky that I never encountered any issues with this.

about radios

Hi all i am currently using GV rom with radio:
32.44.00.32U_5.09.05.30_2
since i am having some wifi connection issues i was thinking of flashing the latest which is 5.17.05.23 at adams thread.
my qn is can i just flash the zip file over it and become 32.44.00.32U_5.17.05.23? i see some having 32.54 etc..
pls advice.
Thanks
If you are not s-off or flashed custom hboot, go to recovery, wipe dalvik cache + cache, flash as zip and reboot.
DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PHONE WHILE FLASHING RADIO!!! If there something goes wrong, your phone will be bricked.

No warranty for any damage.
Thanks for link.
so after flash i can say is 32.44.00.32U_5.17.05.23?
forgive me on this part 32.44.00.32U as i see different versions like 32.54...

If you flash latest version and works correctly, you will have 32.56.00.32U_5.17.05.23.
And use the thanks button, do not say it.
Also have a look at your router and maybe consider changing the channel?
I have read several posts advising channel 11 or above
thanks for all the replies.successfully flashed new radio.
one more qn..currently i am thinking of going to sense roms.read that i need to flash matching ril for the radio i flashed?

It's only recommend to do this and as far as i know only for aosp roms. For sense roms you do not need to flash any ril after flashing radio.

Flash New Radio

After searching the threads on the forum a lot refer to this post here on how to flash a new radio. However, I'm sure I read somewhere that this method might now be outdated and a new radio can be simply flashed direct from the SD Card on the phone. Is this correct? If so, is it flashed in the same way as a new ROM?
Yes you can just install the zip like a rom. Please don't touch,move,... the device while the rom is installed. Let it on the table,... until it's rebootet. Otherwise it could be that something works not like it should be.
you can flash a new radio from the SC card just like a ROM but ONLY if you have an HBOOT with a /cache of more than 30MB. If it's smaller than that, attempting it this way will brick your phone. If you've never modified your HBOOT, which I'm guessing you haven't, then you will be fine flashing from the SD card.
If your HBOOT had been changed and the /cache is too small, like on the Oxygen or CM7 ones, then you must do it through fastboot.

How do I check my HBOOT Cache?
EDIT: My HBOOT version is 0.93.0001
If you've s-off'd your Desire using the alpharav.nl software and then flashed a new partition table, that's how you alter the /cache size. It doesn't sound like you've done that yet so you're stock /cache will be fine to flash from the SD card.
If you've s-off'd your can use AndroidFlasher to flash new radio at any time.
10 seconds and you have new radio!

You won't brick your phone, it just won't install. I had the CM7 HBOOT and tried flashign radio through recovery and it was just a failed installation (so i S-OFF'd).
Ok, so now I've S-Off'd my Desire the process appears to have changed the HBoot version to a much later number than before. It now shows HBOOT 6.93.1002 where before it was 0.75.0000. Will this have changed my cache? I'm worried now about flashing the new radio in case the cache size has changed. Where can I check the cache size?
EDIT: No need for me to check the cache size because I successfully flashed the latest radio now. I used AndroidFlasher, which was very simple to use. Thanks for all the advice
If I want to revert back to my previous radio (basically if I see no difference or worse performance with the latest radio) is the process as simple as just reflashing or is there something else I would have to do to "downgrade" the radio?
Should be the same as upgrading to new one.

it will be the same as upgrading it.. after all all you're doing is flashing some software on the phone, but there would be no point in going back to the older version once you've upgraded...

Did you check the md5 checksum before flashing? If the md5 matches then use the method bortak mentions above or I used Android Flasher. Try it again but ensure you follow the instructions given earlier to the letter.
Working!!!

No service after flashing radio

Hello there!
I have flashed this radio: 6th September 2011: Radio_12.62.60.27_26.13.04.19_M - HTC 3.06.405.1 WWE to my Desire HD, then the proper RIL.
I used the following sources and guides and followed them step by step:
How to Flash a Radio.IMG Win/Mac by leith54
The HTC Desire HD Radio Thread by Drakknar
Radio Interface Libraries by jkoljo
And now my phone is unable to find a cellular network.
I have Cyanogenmod 7.2, Radio S-OFF, ENG S-OFF, SuperCID, ClockWorkMod Recovery.
I would appreciate any kind of help or ideas how to make it working.
Thank you!
Regards,
robi54321
Okay I managed to flash an older radio now. The 12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2. And it's working again. So I'm good to go I guess. Heartattack is gone.
But I'm just wondering why is it that this version works properly and the other one doesn't?

Make sure that u flash a radio that is for your phone and not the Inspire 4G....besides being similar hardware are not the same (different frequencies), so always double check that the radio is compatible with your device and that the download is not corrupted by checking md5sum....:good:

I got the radio from the Desire HD radios forum not the Inspire 4G, and checked the MD5SUM also. I have flashed Radio_12.54.60.25_26.09.04.11_M2.
Sometimes I have signal now, but it keeps loosing it.
Perhaps the problem was by flashing a different ril?
Since all non sense roms use one standard ril and shouldnot ve messed with unless its a sense rom.

Wait, what are you talking about now?
From what i get, you had 7.2 flashed a radio and ril, problem started, flashed another radio, its a bit better.
If that is what you have done till now, then just full wipe and flash the rom again to see what happens.
I have no idea what you mean by downgrade.
Radios are subjective by location. You ought to keep each radio for a couple of days to see how it works for you. They also affect battery usage and such.
Hence, just reflash the rom after a wipe and check it out.

The rom won´t solve the issue. Whenever you flash a radio you need to flash the matching ril. I have sent you and email. You will find all the information there, but ROMs don't flash radios but RILs....so if you change the radio just flash the correct ril for it.
Then you need to give the device time to settle...at least 2 or 3 days...

Unless Im mistaken, non sense roms all use the same ril. He is running cm7.2. He then flashed a radio and the corresponding ril, which in my assumption would be its for a sense rom.
Afterwards he flashed a different radio keeping all the same.
If he flashes the rom again,he will have the ril which is compatible with the rom. Thus possibly correcting the issue.
Correct me if I wrong.

Yeah that's correct I missed the CM7 thing...there's no need to flash RIL...and I guess that the radio is useless in non sense roms...probably he should go back to his original radio and then start all over again
