I've noticed from day one that sometimes the proximity sensor seems to be a bit goofy on my phone. Sometimes the screen would go blank immediately after starting a call, and nothing I could do could bring it back except for putting it back up to my face and pulling it away again.
Welp, now the sensor seems to be totally dead unless I smack the phone with my hand. It makes calls, but the display goes blank and no buttons will work at all until the other person hangs up (doesn't matter if it's incoming or outgoing). I've only had the phone for a week. If I have it away from my face and smack the front of the phone with the palm of my hand the display comes back on and all buttons start working again for a few seconds, then it'll go blank again.
I've reverted it back to the stock DI18 that it came with and formatted the SD card (along with wiping everything more times than I can count). Anything else I should try before I take it back to Sprint tomorrow?

Mine is doing the same.... even worse actually. If the other side doesn't hang up (after taking call and it going blank)..... I have to do a battery pull to fix the issue until the next call. Other times (smaller percentage)... the screen won't turn off at all while talking on it. Either way is unacceptable. I don't know what is causing it... I tried to do a complete wipe and have stock rom.... but it didn't fix the problem. This only starting happening a few weeks ago. I took it into a sprint store and they ordered me a new phone (out of stock). It's still under warrantly... so all is good I hope. I plan on dumping Samsung once a better Gingerbread HTC phone comes out early next year. Samsung support sucks!
Mine goes blank on every single call - only way to get the phone to respond is by removing the battery or smacking the **** out of the front of it with my hand (at which point it brings up the normal in-call screen). Really annoying especially since I just got it on Tuesday.
Hopefully the store near me has some of them in stock. It's also a service center, and a fairly large corporate owned store, so I'm pretty sure I'll be able to swap it tomorrow.
So, the screen stays black until the call is ended right? Well, I have a solution for ending the call if the otherside doesnt hang up anyway, if your running 2.2...
You can set the power key to end calls, that way you can easily disconnect the call without having to have the screen on. I know this isnt a solution, but it may work as a stop gap until you can get it working correctly.
Menu->Settings->Accessibility-> (If a box pops up saying 'No accessibility applications found', just hit cancel) -> Check the box next to 'The power key ends calls'
If your not running 2.2, you can do this by editing one of the key map files, just follow the how to in this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=849075
That is an option, but it'd be a lot nicer if the phone actually worked the way it's supposed to.
Turns out the corporate owned stores are open late during the holidays, I swung by a little while ago and they confirmed the sensor was borked. Swapped it out on the spot.

same here... they were out of stock though...and ordered me one. I wonder what caused the sensor to be broken?
this is not a sensor problem, i have this problem and only had it after having the "leaked" 2.2 froyo build, and flashing back to eclair.
this problem didnt happen on 2.2, but now it happens to me on 2.1
Same thing, when i make a call, screen is dead, the only way to get it back is to have the other person hang up.
I have the same issue. I make a call, put the phone to my ear and the screen goes blank. Say I'm calling my credit card company and need to enter in my credit card number via the keypad to continue, I take the phone from my ear back to horizontal in front of me and the screen won't turn on. I can press all buttons, open and shut the keyboard but nothing gets the screen to turn back on until the phone call is disconnected, or I pull the battery.
I don't have insurance through Sprint or Best Buy. I got the phone the first day it was available last fall. I flashed back to stock and still had the issue, the most I ever did was root and clockworkmod. What should I do? Do I have a manufactures warrenty? What kind of process is that, will I be stuck with a POS phone for a month like I was with my Touch Pro back when I had Best Buy replace that...

I think this would fall under the "manufactures warrenty" since you might have a possible hardware failure already within a year. I would call and ask to find out.
While I'm waiting to stop at the Sprint store after work I downloaded a few sensor test programs from the market. The ones that support the proximity sensor never give me a value when doing the tests. They usually just sit there in a status of "Waiting for sensor". Does anyone know how Sprint can test the sensor or will they just do what I've done?

I know there are phone codes that will put you in the test hardware mode, I did this a while back when I got the epic. If I can remember as you come closer to the phone with the hand or whatever you use either the screen would turn off or it would vibrate maybe it did both like I said I can't remember.
I did some homework for you via Google of course, I tried it out and it worked, a screen will popup when you enter the codes pick sensors...just cover up the prox sensor and the value will change from 0 to a 1 and vibrate.

I didn't know they had a hardware diagnostics built in. Thanks for the info. Looks like my proximity sensor doesn't change from 1.0 when I cover up the phone. I had a friend do similiar tests with his EVO and it switch from 1.0 to 0.0 when you got your finger about 0.25 inches away from the sensor. Thanks again.
Just to follow up, I took the phone to my local sprint store, which now is a repair center, and they took a look at it and said that they could fix it for $35. I don't have TEP on it so that is why I paid $35. I picked it up today and they put a new screen (top half of the slider) on to fix it and tightened up the looseness of the slider as well. Well worth the $35 in my mind. Although they forgot to put the micro usb cover back on so I have to stop back and see if that is laying around on the work bench.

Long story short:
I was applying SGP's flex to my phone yesterday. Too much water maybe, my phone started acting weird after installation, really dimmed display, touch screen not registering touch, and etc.
So I opened up the phone per ifixit's instruction, attempting to see if there's really any water in there so I can dry the components up.
At the time of opening it up, didn't notice any water at all, while the screen still remains not responding. At the end, the phone finally failed to boot (white Google screen looping). So I put everything back on, and finally leave it looping on my desk while I went out trying to have some fun in order to blow away this Saturday night sadness.
Magically, when I returned home after ~5 hrs, the phone is in the system and the touch screen works perfectly again. Also, the screen is showing images normally again. I happily went to bed with my phone.
This [sad] morning, volume button won't work. Opened it up, found that the volume switch (which was soldered onto the mobo) was ripped off (probably by careless me). Refer to this pic here. EDIT: sorry I still can't post outside link.

Now I'm left alone: the phone is a imported GSM, seemingly not supported by anyone in the U.S. right now. Moreover, since the volume switch is soldered onto the mobo, and I am very sure I will ruin the phone if I try to re-solder the switch onto the mobo (it's some finest soldering on there), not to mention that the Cable Ribbon of the volume switch seems to be ruined as well, I think my only option is to get a totally new mobo that has volume switch soldered onto it.
To summarize:
1.Do I need a new mobo, if I find no one to help me repair the phone?
2.Where can I get a new mobo? (searched on eBay w/o results)
3.Will changing the mobo affect anything? I assume the data and system would be lost, but how about the identity of my phone?
4.If there's one agent in the U.S. that you think would take care of this uncostly (~$100?), who would you refer? Maybe Verizon, Samsung, or someone else?
5.If all of the above attempts fail at the end, I'll be considering selling it at a deep discount to someone who's got his way of restoring this phone, where would you recommend for me to go find such a talented Nexus lover? Will eBay fulfill this purpose the best?
Finally, thanks for you, the fellow members, for your help in advance. I hate myself for opening up the phone, now, thinking that the phone may have recovered for good w/o being opened up by me. Now that it has recovered with a broken volume switch in its body, making this issue much more complicated

it sounds like you jumped the gun and opened the phone prematurely. How long did you wait to open up the phone after you installed the screen guard?
As far as your situation, I would probably cut my losses, get what I can out of it on eBay and buy another one.

Should have I also shouldve stayed with a dry apply film. Being a perfectionist, I almost knew I would ruin the phone by over spraying the application solution for a easier and better application

Actually, immediately. I didn't know the gaps around the glass screen is also the entrance for the water to get into the phone. I thought only headset speaker could let some water into it. After disassembled the phone, I realized that the water can easily get into the phone thru the gap, which leads the water right onto the mobo underneath the glass... Again, I didn't notice any water inside the phone, but i could be just moisture that's playing some nasty game here. I also did some intensive swing and tossing of the phone to get water out, until there's no water coming out.
Anyhow, I just went to Verizon store, and they said they wouldn't touch anything GSM, and said the only option for me seems to contact Samsung. Or as you said, I could sell it on eBay. Don't know how much it's worth though
I had to open up my Gnex last week because i dropped it in a puddle of water while getting out of my car...
If i remember correctly, the vol rocker is glued to the internal part that comes out with the screen and most of the electronics, so i cant imagine how you would have torn it off...
Its connectected to the main pcb via a connector though, sure you didn't just unplug the connector??
You could also try to go without the volume rocker, use some kind of widget for volume control, not ideal but cheaper than a new Gnex

Yes, the volume switch is double-side taped, but the other end (the cable ribbon itself) is soldered onto the back of the mobo in my phone. I don't know how or what force ripped it off of the mobo. The cable ribbon is torn pretty harshly... I'll upload a pic when I make past the 10 posts and "unlock all capabilities"..
Also, did you notice any "sequela" after the incident? Does your phone function good now? There's time that on my phone the touch screen does not respond/register touch anymore suddenly. I usually just leave it standby with screen off. Usually, after 1+ hr, when I turn the screen back on, the touchscreen works fine...

Install the app called quickboot, it lets u go direcrly into recovery or bootloader without holding volume keys.

I live in Brazil, a friend of mine brought one bought at Negri electronics at US for me. It suffered an accident (part of it involves someone pushing down a window over it) and the screen cracked.
I've sent it back to Negri for RMA Repair to fix the screen and they did it, but before shipping back, found that the volume buttons weren't working. They canceled the shipment and found out that the volume cable was broken (the screen crack was near to the volume buttons, so I guess it wasn't them that broke it while fixing the screen).
Well, I've actually paid for the screen repair and ship back, but they claim that their repair facility was unable to fix the volume... any light over this?

Sorry I can't help buddy, at the time I owned the device, it was still pretty new, so I couldn't find a source that actually sells GNex motherboard. I think the only way to fix a ripped rocker button is to replace mobo if you don't find anywhere to solder it for you.
Important part is this, for whoever got the chance, buy it from Amazon! The rep was kind enough to issue me an RMA after knowing my ripped volume rocker is my own fault, and while I was actually trying to ask him about where to send it to fix. They just gave me an RMA and let me send it back and get anything else I want. Amazon customer service another miracle!

My phone's volume down button appeared to be stuck. It's not physically stuck but the volume pop up would come up all the time and turn my volume all the way down and vibrate. I installed Quick Settings hoping that would override whatever was causing the issue and it seemed to do the trick except I'd still get the random vibrate from before it just wasn't turning down my volume. Then I tried turning the volume down with the volume rocker and it didn't respond. I could still turn the volume up, just not down.
I unlocked my bootloader yesterday in hopes of rooting but I never got around to actually rooting my phone. I was going to do that this morning so I pulled up cmd and threw in the command: fastboot flash recovery r1-modaco-recovery-clockwork-touch-endeavoru.img. Then I realized my phone was still on *facepalm* so I tried to power down but the power down options weren't popping up like they're supposed to. So I held the power button down to force the power down but instead of powering down, it went straight to the bootloader screen.
Now here's the problem... my volume down button still does not work and to make matters worse, my volume up button and my power button are acting as the volume down button. In other words, I can only scroll down. I'm unable to select anything or power down.
Any ideas?
After pondering for a while, I'm thinking that this is a hardware issue and the volume down button is defective. I notice that when I push either the volume up or power button, the cursor doesn't move until I let go. That leads me to believe that the volume down button is still stuck so when I push another button, the other button doesn't do anything (similar to power windows in a car where the driver is trying to roll a window up while the passenger is holding the window down button and the window just sits there) but when I let go of it, the volume down button resumes and moves the cursor down.
The worst part is, I've been in Germany for three days and I've only had the phone for two. I don't speak German (I'm a lazy military husband who figured submersion would be the best way to learn) so turning this in for warranty is going to be a major pain in the ass. *sigh*
Hi, sorry to hear you are having problems,
Since you haven't actually rooted the phone and haven't made any modifications, you should be able to return it for warranty. This would have happened even if you weren't trying to root the phone; just powering it down. So yeah... Seems like warranty is your only option I'm afraid....

I figured the warranty should still be good. I'm just hoping I can do the warranty exchange in the store like they do in the US. If not, then I hope I can call the US customer service. If I have to go through the German customer service, it won't be fun (because I don't speak German, I'm sure they're helpful if you can communicate with them).
I was able to "unstick" the button about 30 minutes ago. I read that there's a creaking noise if you squeeze the lower corners of the phone. I squeezed the phone and sure enough, it creaked, but only slightly. Nothing to worry about. But I did see that familiar rainbow looking wave in the screen. So I squeezed all up and down the sides (to this day, the rainbow distortion of LCD screens still mesmerize me) and that inadvertently unstuck my volume down button. It has still stuck a couple of times since but it stops when I squeeze the screen near the button.
I'm still going to turn it in for warranty, but at least I can play with it until then.
Ah did you got it booting then?? I would get it to an O2 store ASAP if you bought it from your carrier. If its an unbranded phone you could try going into a German phone shop to see if they'll replace it. Most people working in German shops should speak a fair amount of english, so that won't be a problem.
EDIT: Oh and before you go numb looking for one; Germany has no O2 stores I think...

I'm happy you were able to fix it. As for the warranty thing. Technically you void it by unlocking your bootloader, no matter whether you rooted it ore somesthing. But as this seems to be a hardware issue that can't be caused by software (like frying your CPU by overclocking it).
Welcome to Germany! Normally stores won't return it, but sometimes they offer to send it to HTC for you... If you're lucky and you bought it at "Media Markt" you should be fine though. They usually do that kinda stuff, if you got it from O2, chances are low they will just give you a new one. Sorry
Yes, I am able to boot back into the OS. There are O2 stores in Germany, that's where I bought the phone.

I wanted to give an update to this situation in the rare case that I'm not the only one who has experienced this problem. I ended up taking my phone back to the O2 store and they sent it off for a warranty claim. During this time, I was given a Motorola Milestone as a loaner. It was small, slow and frustrating but at least it was a Google phone. Two and a half weeks later, my phone was back. The verdict? They could not duplicate the issue and therefore did NOTHING! I was so frustrated because I felt like I went without my phone for absolutely nothing. The O2 staff did tell me that if I send the phone back to the warranty claims a second time and they don't find anything again, they will replace the phone. But did I really want to be without my phone for another 2+ weeks? After all, I did find a quick temporary fix for the issue. I decided to hold onto the phone in hopes that I could better understand the issue or even live with it.
After a few more weeks with my phone, the issue was getting more and more difficult to "fix" until eventually, it wouldn't fix. I still used the phone for a couple days until it froze up, rebooted and went straight into the bootloader where it stayed at full brightness until it died. I couldn't shut it off nor charge it. Essentially, it was bricked. I went back to the O2 store again to send it off for warranty. This time it took an agonizing 3 weeks and again, they couldn't fix it. But this time they sent me a brand new phone! Yay! So now I'm sitting here with a fully functional awesome Android phone. It was rough going 5+ weeks without my phone but I'm happy now.
Recap of key points:
- HTC One X
- Unlocked bootloader
- Rooted
- Custom ROM
- Had a hardware issue
- Sent in for warranty... twice
- Phone was replaced after second warranty attempt at no cost

As I read in the Sprint forum, some time ago, it was noticed that the power button seemed loose, 'rocky' on a pivot. Other Note II demo phones had some flexibility with the power button as well. I haven't read about any problems with a lagging or unresponsive power (not home) button due to this but NOW it seems I have to press moderately-centered on the button to either wake or ZZZ the phone. Before it seemed I can press this button with as much force as the home button, even at an angle (Note II is wider after all). So my BIG question Have you ever pressed on the power button more than once to just wake up your phone? Or, put it to sleep? Do you have the press the button dead centered for it to work? And, does your power button seemed rocky, even slightly?
I am not rooted...running on good ole factory specs! My phone has never been dropped or damaged either. I would hate to send the phone to Samsung and be without one for 2 weeks, so I figured to troubleshoot with you guys first

my phone did the samething within 3 days of when i got it. i just took mines back to at&t since it was so quick and the manager gave me a new one. hopefully someone does come up with a way to fix it without you having to send it yo samsung.

Haven't noticed any issues with mine, but I suppose these kinds of issues are why I bought insurance.
My power button is 'rocky'; it seems to pivot from the center. However, I can press it anywhere to wake the phone or turn the screen off. There's a satisfying click when I do press it, so I'm not worried.
Same issue with my power button. Happened only a few days after I received mine as well.

Gathering the input so far, I think I might have to send this to Samsung to get it repaired since I passed my return/exchange period I have insurance but I am also under warranty with Sammy, so that route would be cheapest. Good thing I still have my old flip phone from 2005 that still works but going to dread going back 7 years though!
Lets hope that this doesn't become an eventual problem for most. Thanks for the comments so far.
Definitely take it back to repair it. My power button started off rocky and eventually became worse with use. I had to replace it. Get it fixed ASAP
got my first one replace with a new one due to same reason.
Mine works fine to turn off.
Turn on is a bit more picky.
Does not rock or is not loose.

I believe it used to be 30 days for personal accounts, now those terms only apply to corporate accounts. For personal accounts, its now 14 days. From what I understand, this policy covers items bought from a corporate AT&T store, or ordered direct from AT&T. You are allowed to exchange or return at a corporate store, with a possibility of a $35 restocking fee depending on the scenario. Also, you can also send it back to AT&T but you will have to cover shipping. I only suspect if you buy from a re-seller (aka a non-corporate AT&T store but clearly marked 'AT&T') you can exchange or return at a corporate store.
From what I was told by AT&T and a brief conversation with Samsung, the Note II carries a 1 year manufacture's warranty. I don't know the specifics, but assuming there is no abuse or damage of the phone caused by the user, and if the phone does not perform as it should (like mentioned in this thread), Samsung's warranty will cover it with no charge. But realize, unless you have a backup phone, you won't have a phone for 2 weeks! Also, there is a possibility that Samsung may use reconditioned parts, and if they can't fix your phone, you will get a reconditioned model But what if you have insurance? Then there is a deductible. A possibility of a reconditioned phone too?

Mine is the oppsite, it is too sensitive,not very tactile. I hit it accidentally all the time.
my power button just went wonky last night. it used to be somewhat rocky, but it was responsive. now it barely moves. i cant tell if im pressing it or not. it still powers on the phone. but there is no click or comfirming feeling at all. it might as well be capacitive now. about 40 days old.
Roughly a week ago I'm laying in bed playing Candy Crush. My girl comes in and ask me to come help her with the pool. I leave Candy Crush up and running, but turn off the screen and slide the phone into my back pocket. I dumped a few chlorine tablets in the pump, and we move the ladder to the other side of the pool (above ground pool). I come back in to finish my game and all of the sudden, S-Voice and Task Manager continuously pop up while I'm trying to play. I ODIN my phone and reset the flash counter getting it ready for warranty replacement, but it stopped afterwards. So of course I write it off a software bug / glitch.
So this past week I would go and put my phone on the charger at night, and wake up the next morning to find that my phone had stopped charging throughout the night. Now sometimes I can't even get it to start charging. I've actually sat there and seen it stop charging, Also, the last time I ODIN my phone, was the last time I was able to get any computer to recognize my phone. I've also had my phone randomly pop up and say that it is "docked" when it's not plugged into anything.
The only part I don't get is in the beginning why it was randomly acting like I was hitting the home button. Is it possible that the charging / data port could cause this type of behavior? I've never used one, or even read about one...but I assume the dock has features / buttons that would also be like hitting the home button. So I'm assuming that it's possible to emulate the home button being pressed through the charging / data port?

Could it have gotten wet at some point? Sounds like that kind of effect, but I'm sure you would have mentioned it...
Maybe the home button got pressed and stuck while in your back pocket?
Can you still return it?

i don't know why people would put the phone in their backpocket. or WHY they even bring their phone when they're helping with the pool.
you didn't state if your phone has a case, if it was a tight sqeeze for your phone when you put it in your back pocket, but chances are, your board is damaged. you COULD try and if they ask, you can alway hope they don't check and just probably replace it. mention that your charging port failed and if they tried to charge it and it didn't work, they MIGHT accept your warranty.
I put it in my back pocket verses my front pocket because it's NOT a tight squeeze. I also carry everything else in my front pockets, keys, lighter, flash drives, ect... Things I wouldn't want pushing against my phone. If I sit down I remove it from my back pocket and sit it in front of me on a table or something. I do have a case and it covers a good portion of the phone, including the charging port, headphone jack, and stylus. The chances that it got wet is slim to none. The reason I took it with me is because I have a very sick family member, and if they happen to call for whatever reason... I don't want to miss that call. Regardless, they did replace it under warranty.
