Hi,
I have a problem. My phone is gettin on and off the internet via gprs non stop. The amount of data transfered is minor, but it runs down the battery. Is there a way to see what is using the internet?
Thanks
I think its obvious to know wwhat is using.the internet.

hey there mate
am using a program called "Traffic Monitor"
got it off the market. it shows you what programs and how much traffic they have "consumed" and it makes a list of present day, previous day, current month and the last month.
it installs a widget and by clicking on it you go into the "main program"
it has helped me a lot since i was also troubled with the data traffic.
hope it helps.
just my 2 cents...
Cheers !!!
When I install traffic monitor, it only instal widget, there is no application. Any sugestions?

This is my first android phone so I am still finding my way around it, I am looking for a little bit of help.
I installed netcounter and everything seems to be ok it opens and displays the data screens but it never updates the wifi data. (I did a search but found nothing for my problem).
Am I supposed to do something else after the install ? Any help would be much appreciated I also emailed the developer but never got a reply
If it doesn't count WiFi isn't that a good thing? Means what it does say is your mobile Internet which is what you want to keep an eye on...
same problem
i got same problem on my new Desire, wifi is zero all the time, but it does count my mobile data, but probably wrong.. looks like it counts them altogether
lol, guys please
just think logically, what are apps like this made for? to monitor your internet usage so you dont go over your monthly plan, WiFi is free so why would it monitor it and confuse you with overall results?
To be fair though the app has a specific section for WiFi data usage which only ever displays 0 but is clearly meant to show your usage, so it is not working correctly.

no idea why, but it looks like that.. i was using wifi and count of my mobile data was on the increase
but in my brothers legend works fine
well if your with T-Mobile you can always check how much you used on the My T-Mobile page

Of course it should work for wi fi! The app works correctly on other phones. I have contacted the author for a fix for desire. And its very useful to see what activities use up the mb on wi fi so u can estimate what usage it will use when not on wi fi
still active?
I've been able to patch the sourcecode to get it to work on the HTC Desire, which was very easy since it is basically the same device as the Nexus One. I've been using that patched version without a problem.
I've submitted that patch to the author almost 3 weeks ago, but I've received no reply yet. I've also noticed that the application source code hasn't been updated since January, 3rd, so I suspect that this application isn't being actively developed anymore...
Does anybody have a good alternative that monitors both 3G and WiFi?
I'm using Network Monitor since I also couldn't get Netcounter to count wi-fi data. Network monitor doesn't have a problem with that.
Try Smart Monitor Lite, it measures both WiFi and mobile net. Works fine for me...

Thanks Luftwalk, I'll check it out, though up front I already know I won't like the ads. I live in Belgium so I won't be able to get rid of those...
Hello everyone here at XDA.
Just recieved my HTC Desire but my data plan only allows 1gb transfer every month.
I tried out a few apps but havent found a single one actually working on HTC Desire.
I need a widget or something that stays in the notification area showing how much data i used over gprs/3g and not Wifi.
On most apps in market people have commented the programs doesnt work on Desire.
Anyone found one working.
Best regards,
Alexander Freiling
I've started using 3g watchdog which seems to do the job quite nicely
Thanks a lot, working like charm .
I've installed "Network Monitor" on the marketplace, free but ad supported. It's alarming how much data I'm using, I had no idea

+1 .. seems like the best out there.
Yep, 3G Watchdog seems to do the business.
Does anyone know of a good data usage widget for hercules?
Sent from my HercuBEAST!!!
i used this https://market.android.com/details?id=net.rgruet.android.g3watchdog
when i had a limited data plan
since i got unlimited, i totally removed it off my phone
I also use 3G Watchdog.
Works fantastic. Tells me how much data I used today/this week/this month/this cycle, and what I am trending to do for the cycle. You set your bill cycle start date and data cap limit.
I like traffic monitor better than watchdog, its just a widget but it tells youvur data usage on wifi and mobile, even which apps are using data and how much

both are good choices, but 3g wathdog is more accurate IMO, it also has backup/restore option so you can continue to monitor your data usage, eve after you wipe and flash to a new ROM
I dont think theres one that auto tracks like the droid phones. All these ones you have to enter in the info
Sent from my HercuBEAST!!!
define auto track, what do you mean by that?
if the apps don't auto track, then you'll never have updated accurate information
so, i've no clue what you are trying to say
data apps
3G Watchdog wasn't tracking any usage for me on this phone(because I'm not using 3G?). I installed one from the market called My Data Manager Free that is ok. It's more basic but seems to do the job. I've only been using it for 2 days, so I don't really know how accurate it is.
*Edit*I re-loaded 3g watchdog this afternoon and it seems to work fine now. Not sure why it didn't work when I loaded it the first time.
3g watchdog ou have to enter your billing cycle so it resets. I was wondering if there was one that jst tracked my data withoit me entering in anything

Just use the My Account app installed on the phone. Tells you how much data you have used, how many minutes talk time and SMS messages.
I have been experiencing a lot.of issues with any data monitor not working. Any ideas?? Thanks

I'm using my DHD as a Wi-Fi hotspot using my 3g connection. I have an all u can eat data plan, which I believe means 3 browsing. But a limit on up/down loads. Would this come under browsing?
Any advise is welcome

what do you mean?
http://www.store-3.co.uk/3-unlimited-data-one-plan.html
this one?
if so: where does it say that you've got a limit on up- and downloads? And what would be the difference to browsing? Opening a website in your phones browser means you have to download the site and all the pictures on that site.

This is the deal??

Is that a question?
From your initial post it wasn't clear which carrier you are on or even which country you are from (t-mobile exists in a lot of countries! and not everybody looks at signatures and knows what "t-mo" stands for) and "all-you-can-eat" is a term the 3 network actually uses. And since you wrote "3 browsing"....
however:
this should answer your question:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/technology/blog/2011/jan/14/t-mobile-data-explanation
As i understand it, they do a deep packet inspection to see what content you are trying to download. But judging from that interview most of the people at t-mobile don't even know themselves how it works.
That means that you should be able to use your notebook (or whatever you need the hotspot for) in the same way you use your phones browser and as soon as you hit the 500mb the network will stop sending you the things, that need to be "downloaded".
Worst case you will only see text on websites since pictures need to be downloaded too, but i guess you have to try that for yourself.
You should wait until the last day of the month and then start streaming videos on youtube. Once you hit the 500mb and see what gets blocked it would be nice if you could come back here and post your results.
Sorry should of put !! Anyway I upgraded so will carry on using it as a hotspot (4 my ps3). Wait to se if they send me the text. Will see if I can hit the limit, and report what happens.
Thanks

So after two long years of using, what I can only describe as the most stable phone I've ever used, I've upgraded to a galaxy s3.
My 2 daughters generally fight over who can use the iPod to watch BBC iPlayer when they goto bed at night, or when they're bored during the day..
I now have a phone sitting in a drawer and it got me thinking If there is any way I can give my desire a new lease of life and give it to my daughter to use for accessing the BBC website? That way one can watch on the iPad, the other on the desire.
I'm only concerned about them using the phone to call the emergency services by accident. Is there anyway I can disable the phone for making calls an still keep the wireless/functionality the same ?
Any comments appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
Maybe you can hide call/dialer button from the app drawer (try apps like audio manager-you can lock/hide anything with this app. Also you can remove dialer icon from home screen
And just try searching on market there must be a way to disable it with some app
Also our good friend Google can always help you good luck

Airplane Mode Wifi Tool on Playstore is another alternative. Enables wifi on airplane mode.
