i know this is silly thread..
show your Defy waterproof status here
don't forget to recheck your USB port and audio jack port is properly closed before you do this attempt..
make sure your screw is not cracked or broke, or the water will leaked in.
if you want to go deeper like underwater recording, it's more safe to ducktape the earpiece and speaker.
and don't forget turn off your defy after this attempt, open backcase and wipe the water with soft tissue if there's any water come inside.
PS:
do on your own risk though..
i don't take any responsibility for any damage or warranty loss..
here, it's mine

Great man,
Reserved for my defy
Show Off
More Picture coming soon.
Both my videos. Enjoy
Defy was submerged, and was swam with for over 30min
^ that's amazing
now there's a android device for underwater video recording,
MOTODEFY! EPIC WIN!
i thought defy could only swim 1 meter,
you beat that record man
Hah. Thanks. I said this in the video comments and ill say it again. Please do not try it! If you do, understand the risks.
Peoples defys have broken from water. I guess i feel comfortable with my phone since I take showers with it almost daily (for pandora), and ive washed it with water. but, after having my earpiece replaced, and having the side of the housing by the screws crack, my defy lost its waterproof-ness, and in turn, is now broken. My defy died from a few inches in a pool for a few seconds. You can read my thread about that. So if you see cracks by your screws, dont water test it. Also, id tape up the speaker hole before id try this again.
ups... sorry for your loss man..
thats why i tell people doing it at his own risk..
i have to warn about screw crack though on 1st post.

Sh**! If only your was not broken, then it would have truly become EPIC!
Its been replaced, so no biggie. The phone still turns on. there is just alot of water behind the screen. there is a hardware failure somewhere in the phone.

Sort of....
My computer know my defy as MB526 efter upgrading to Android 2.3.3
wow, amazing, I would dare to do that even if I know that is able to survive that kind of stuff :S
do at your own risk mate..
some survive, some broken...
some broken because there's a leak, usually at usb port and audio port.
that rubber is not that good for closing it properly. have to do some tricks on some angle to close it properly.
here are two videos of my defy:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mQG-EflSJQA

enjoy!
Dive in lake. I did not dry it after or anything else... i got low volume in call straight after. I dont know is it connected but i get cracking sound in calls when volume set too high. Like speaker is loose.
Take a look, if looked closely, you could see a fish about 2 foot long.
Linkj
does your usb port cap seemed to be loose?
My defy is NOT waterproof.
I tried to make water run through it and I couldn't charge it.
Then I got to go to repair at service center.
About two months after, inside my USB port cap seems to be teared as well as my earphone cap.
sorry to hear that!
for that reason i'm so affraid of trying mine

They actually make water proof cases so you put your phone into the case and still use it underwater if you are in the ocean or whatever.

My only questions would be do they make a bluetooth that is water proof? Also if your diving with your phone .... you have an addiction.
I'm skeptical about the screen being able to detect touch through that thing.
And it's so stylish!

My phone and I are at the pool and I'm trying to make sure my phone doesn't get wet.
Uh, why don't you keep your phone out of the water then?

Im sure it'll work fine. I can operate my phone with mechanics wear gloves on while doing yard work (changing songs) so this plastic should be no problem.
I do however wonder two things.
1. What pictures would it take in this thing...under water. Poor at best, but stay with me on this one.
2. What kind of reception would I get? I am tempted to go snatch one of my old G1s out of the kids toy tubs and take it diving just to take a picture and post it all while under water.
You guys obviously are not familar with the Sonar app, I think its called "ping" try it. Great for avoiding errant U-boats while diving.
Vibrant vibrating nicely now,Kthx!
i heard another cheap way to protect your phone underwater is to use condoms. LOL
hi there,
I had spilled water on the top of my galaxy nexus this morning and it wiped out the ear speaker. so i decided to open it up and eventually after some tinkering around I managed to fix it, however, I hadn't realised when lifting the mainboard that the volume switch was soldered onto it, and ended up breaking the connection. you can see it from the picture below. how can I solder this back? its a very small connection. i cant seem to find any videos or guides on how to solder back connections like this.
any help would be grateful, thanks
everything else with the phone is working fine though, but i lost the ability to go to recovery or bootloader

Can't be done, you broke 2 of the connections from the ribbon itself.
You'll have to either buy a whole new ribbon, or a whole new board with the ribbon already soldered on.
The picture also seems to indicate the pad being lifted from the other board. If that is indeed the case (feel the area of the board for a depression), your repair just got a lot more expensive - you may need to replace the board too.
Below point may be moot given the damage in question, but the actual soldering is best done with a high power but temperature controlled soldering station like the Weller WES51. You also need lead free solder, fresh tip, very steady hand, and quite probably a third hand (a tool that looks like two posable alligator clips, to hold your work piece).

i assume you mean the pads where the connection was? its ok its just that the soldered bits are abit lifted. the board doesn't seem to have any damage.
I've contacted Samsung about this, i hope they get back to me in time. i can still use the phone though, just cant change volume or get any vibrations lol

I never said the board need replacement because it isn't working , just that if the copper pad itself was lifted (or worse, torn) from the board, you will never be able to fully fix the connection yourself because you have nothing on the board to complete the circuit with, without going for more drastic measures.
Samsung may very well ask you to send the phone in, then I'm willing to bet that they'll swap the board as well. That is if they don't try to void your warranty.
yeah, so i ended up buying a faulty GN with a broken screen off eBay ill swap my screen with that one and sell mine too as faulty..
sad times, but ill be back
I would like to share a nice hardware mod from the Samsung Captivate Section, but unfortunately I DO NOT HAVE A GALAXY NEXUS. ALLEGEDLY IT WORKS, BUT AWAITING PROOF PICTURE.

SILVER SPEAKER MOD
WARNING: VERY DANGEROUS
The story of the silver speaker mod: I was getting ready to go out one cold winter day in December, it was 6:30 in the evening. It was just starting to get dark. It was very quiet, aside from the furious wind whipping against the side of my house. Considering surfing with Mr. T was definitely out with these wind conditions, I sat down to reflash my phone to a new kernel. Holding a knife in one hand, as I am known to be quite the multi-tasker (Yeah, i can flash and eat, what now?) and my Captivate in the other, I accidentally knifed my phone. At first, I started to panic and soon began developing a sweat. Looking down; on the verge of a mental breakdown, I was expecting to see a possibly maimed Samsung Captivate, and little to my surprise, I immediately noticed a battle-wound. Hyperventilating, I quickly pondered on how I could handle this situation without diminishing the aesthetic appeal of the phone, and then the silver speaker mod was born.
Requirements:
1. A fingernail / knife / nail-file / any pointy/sharp object
HOW-TO:
Step 1: Scratch at it until it's silver. [Might take awhile, I had to scratch at it pretty vigorously.]
I don't know how nerdy the rest of the XDA community is, but I almost came to my knees in fear when I was performing this operation. I would recommend wearing goggles, gloves,(except for one finger, we need at LEAST one finger nail..) and possibly a bio suit. However, should you find the courage to stand strong and repetitively move your finger up and down, you will be rewarded..with....
Reminder: No steak is worth your phone being hurt over, no eating and flashing.

I'm sure it would work, this happened from wear on my old eris. I could actually try it on that. But a part of the appeal of the nexus is the totally black face, no logo's or on screen buttons, so silver might look out of place.
i have 2 captivates... one with mod(and a cracked screen) and one without...
easy to tell them appart at quick glance.
but one the most sexy things about the GNEX looks is how it looks like one black brick when the screen is turned off.
Lol it works but I can't take pictures without my phone, so It's impossible for me to take pictures of my phone lolol looks great thanks.

Front Facing Camera + Mirror = Profit.
Oh hell no. I would rather jump off a cliff while walking on hot coals while getting bitten by a cobra than willingly scratch my phone.
Pretty sure the speaker grill on the GNex is Plastic....
ahahah made my day this 3ad!cool!
i don't try that only for one reason...love my gnex without grey things,it's so beautiful when screen is off that it's all so black..but on others phone it can be good, more that with default speaker color!

Derp, I'll get the img when I get home. Also it looks more silver on the gnex than your img of the captivate. On yours it almost looks white, but the gnex has a dark look.
mine is pretty silvery but not.. "dark" as you said Gnex is.... the photo-shopped image I made might not be the most color accurate.. but close...
so i take it that its not plastic as was worried about 3 posts up? nice!.... derp.
the gnex is actually quite easy to take apart...all you need is a very small screw driver, a guitar pick and a steady hand. to bad i like the all black look unless i would try this out for you guys lol. good luck
Just be careful several users in the captivate forums reported bricking their phone, or experiencing random reboots, While other members were able to overclock their processor to 4.2 GHz... See original thread for details

Hello guys. I'm currently trying to fix a friends HOX that fell and now the screen doesn't always display image although we can see it always lighting up (it turns on but stays black) .
If I press hardly the HOX's area in red while turning it ON, it works fine. I'm assuming this could be some broken welding points but would like your opinion.

I'm thinking of heating the area with a heat gun, but I'm afraid I'll kill the rest of the phone... what do you think?
Also, after disassembling the phone, the vibration stopped working and I've checked every flat cable and every connector I could find...no ideas to fix this one since it was working before I cracked the phone open.
Any comments are greatly appreciated.
Tks

Possibly a chip has become partly detached from the solder ball grid array due to the shock of the fall. You will not be able to repair this by heating, even if you could reach the melting point of the solder.
The manufacturer would repair by replacing the circuit board and the existing one would be considered unserviceable.
Regards
Phil
So in resume, my friend has a HOX for spare parts... damn...
Couldn't you pack the inside of the housing at the point where you need to apply pressure? Using a piece of card or something. Hardly ideal but would make it functional again
That has been my first attempt, and it's better but still, not enough.
I'm going to disassemble it for the tenth time in a final effort...
tks for the tip though!
So, I've just realized the back metal plate comes out nicely and I think I've found the problem for the GPU issue... that small component on the red area has a broken piece lol (WTF!)
I have applied pressure directly on top of it and I think it will be usable like this, but it now needs a bit of daily use to check if I'm right or wrong.
Can anyone identify what component type is that?
Also, unfortunately (and I don't have a clue how this has happened), the vibration stopped working after opening the phone on the first time, any one has any ideas of what to look for? I don't see any flex cable cut or any other damaged parts...
Tks guys.
Problem solved, some back pressure on the broken piece and the hox is good to go.
The only thing still not working is the vibration...

Sweet Mercy that looks painful!
Nice hack though, I'm always on the lookout for interesting hardware mods!
Question though, mine has started cracking too... anything other than aesthetics affected by it? Heart rate monitor or dust ingress? It would be good to know what to expect if my crack starts expanding... maybe I should dremel it preemptively?

call motorola and get a free replacement. No reason to have a cracked back! You even get a free charging cradle out of the whole thing (and I think the replacements are stronger because I haven't had an issue since I got it swapped)

I'm in that situation where I bought it from someone who bought it in the US, and I find myself in Canada... And Motorola isn't capable of shipping me a replacement, unless I give them a US based address... Seems like too much of a hassle really, everything else is fine, and it had this tiny crack when I bought it (the guy had small wrists, much smaller than mine). I check it every night before I put it on the charger, hasn't expanded at all.
Given some horror stories I've read online of DOA units, dead pixels that aren't covered by warranty and other things, I'd rather stick with my perfectly functional one . Worst case, I'll just dremel the edges to reduce strain.
Thanks for the advice though! :good:

I'm sorry, but to be honest... It looks like ****...
Im sorry but i stall cant stop laughing
The cracks happen when using wrong bands. The metal bands push against the glass back and they crack the glass. Normally the back won't crack when using the genuine strap. I had the pebble steel on the moto360 and saw the glass started damaging so I removed it. If I had it still on then it would have cracked almost certainly
There sure are! At Southern Straps we have NATOs for the MOTO 360
Check us out when you get the chance. Out straps come with a Lifetime Warranty and our founder came from the Android Wear project.
Our bands fit Apple, Pebble and all Android Wear watches!
