[Q] DHD cant mount/read SD card!!! - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok I have a rooted DHD running Cyanogenmod 7. Everything worked fine until I wanted to do a complete factory reset to just sort of clean the slate. I did do a backup of Titanium backup before I did it.
The process went like this I clicked the power button went into reboot recovery and clicked on wipe data/ factory reset, then everything finished. It then rebooted with cyanogenmod 7 which was ok and saw that my SD card wasnt erased.
So what I did was did another factory reset through settings. Then the phone restarted and cyanogenmod 7 starts up and now it cant read my SD card it says its either blank or unsupported file format.
What happened? anyway to recover it?

YAY!!!!!
Figured it out!!! What i did was i went down to the local store looking into buying a new SD card. I asked him if he could check to see if the SD card worked before I bought another one, so he stuck the SD card into his computer with one of those MicroSD to SD adapters and it popped up on his screen and he reformatted it and viola it was done and now my DHD recognizes it. Also he gave me the adapter for free sweet!

I have the same issue and have NOT solved it!
I had flashed the latest LeeDrOiD GB ROM (after doing ext4 wipe) and made a mistake, which ended up with my phone reverting itself back to stock after a wrong selection in bootloader. DOH!
Anyways, after my very brief experience on GB....and very good it was too - my phone was back at 1.32.405.6 with the standard radio.....absolutely back to bog standard.
I was advised on another thread that it was because id left an old stock rom on the SD card ........
After, again seeking advice on here, i removed the PD98.IMG file from the SD Card root. I then set about trying to re root and eng s-off/ radio s-off. This went smoothly ( to the best of my knowledge) i reloaded ROM manager and CWM and booted into recovery. This step went smoothly right up until i tried to select the .zip from the /sd card but an error came up saying something like " E:Can't mount /sdcard"
I rebooted the DHD and got the same message again I decided to copy over the card contents to a temp folder on my laptop and formatted the SD card with default settings and then copied back the card contents. This did not work either.
I have another sd card that i have also tried after formatting and i get exactly the same result. The cards contents are fine and can be read on either PC or laptop. I believe there is a setting/fault on the handset itself.
I dont know whether it has anything to do with SuperCID, as i did opt for that option when using the radio s-off tool.
i am now stuck with a DHD that is useless......
PLEASE HELP SOMEBODY......PLEASE????
Ive been trying literally since 8Oclock this morning..............
There may be a cash reward involved for the solution leading to my systems recovery......
All The best

@ LandUzu
Have you checked the settings in menu / settings / SD & phone storage / mount sdcard
If already mounted, try unmount / mount
Edit2:
If you can't boot system;
Turn off phone & boot into bootloader (Hold vol down, keep pressed & then press power button once)
Recovery
Mounts & storage
Are you able to "mount USB storage" and see the 'drive' on your PC, or able to "mount sdcard" as well?
Also try;
Removing battery for a bit (not too sure what effect, if any)
Remove sdcard and physically look in the sdcard slot (use strong light) for bad / damaged contacts
Edit3:
* FULL format (not quick) in PC sdcard to fat32 default allocation
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App

Thanks for your suggestions......

Hi there UpInTheAir,
Thanks for your suggestions, but i have already tried all of them prior to posting mate.
If i look via settings> sd & storage the card is 'unavailable' to mount or unmount.
If i attempt a mount via bootloader>recovery, i get 'Error mounting /sdcard'
And if i try to mount USB storage, i get 'E:Unable to write ums lunfile (No such file or directory)'
See why im banging my head against the wall?!
The contacts dont appear to be in any particular bad way and i have given it a good blow down the gap in case there was any dust........just cant work it out. The worst bit about all this, is that i had Lee's GB rom running SWEET n SMOOTH when i decided to reboot and all this happened. Im GUTTED!!!
Any further suggestions apart from send it back to HTC?
Regards

Most research points to a bad sdcard. But as you've posted earlier, you've tried two and both work on the PC.
If you cannot find a better or simple solution,...........have another idea;
Flash a stock RUU via PC. I helped Turkish Soldier try a couple months ago, but his was really bricked as his bootloader was already corrupted. We gave it a try, but the phone didn't end a communicating with the PC, so was back to HTC unfortunatey. But yours is different, you still have root & ENG S-off, so should work.
If the sdcard is still not accessable after, maybe it is a hardware fault.
Follow this guide:
[GUIDE] Installing RUU's
Follow the guide exactly and you should be right. Basically, you DL the test ROM and extract the 1.15 Utility. DL the 1.32 RUU and use the 1.15 utility to push it to your phone.
You can also DL the 2 required ROM's from here:
http://shipped-roms.com/index.php?category=android&model=Ace
If all goes well;
You'll need to do all the Visionary - S-Off - ENG S-Off etc again if your able to mount the sdcard. If not, I don't know, as I said, maybe hardware fault.
I hope someone comes up with a simple solution for you, best of luck

Thanks again,

Well thew results are in, and they aint good!! i tried both methods in that tut and neither could awaken the acknowledgement of the /sdcard by the DHD.
Im now intrigued more than upset as to what is causing the lack of comms between the 2, but that is a quirk of modern technology i guess.
Thanks again UpInTheAir for your valued assistance. I think we can safely say the DHD is f**ked.
I have organised a repair and hope to hell my carrier doesnt replace it with an unflashable software version number!!!
Kind Regards & thanks once again.

No worries.
I did you manage to "downgrade" to stock RUU via PC ?
Or you downgraded, but sdcard still wouldn't mount?
If you managed to flash the stock somehow, would have removed the CWM recovery & HBOOT. All I think you need to do now is use jkoljo's tool to S-On, and it will be stock as, except for your sdcard-DHD-sdcard inoperable.
To go back to S-ON:
Flash stock ROM (RUU, not over 1.7)
Temproot using Visionary
Use my tool, do Stock CID and S-ON (enter brand CID if you had a branded device, see second post)
Enjoy your factory-state phone

Just to be safe, check with another card at the HTC service center, never know........
Sorry I can't help further, never know, could be an easy fix somewhere, but seems unlikely.

Managed to downgrade but still no cigar!!

Thanks, i didnt know whether to bother doing that or not, may as well save any hassle from the carrier or HTC.
Ive been searching the house high and low for an sdcard to tes....out of interest, what is the minimum suitable size for the DHD to run (basics)
Regards

I have read somewhere in the downgrade forums that a min of 2gb needed for goldcard, but as for as actual use goes, not to sure. In any case full format fat32 default allocation prior to any test.

[Q] Another Is IT bricked! question.... please help

my desrie has been running fine until today.
was running the open desire rom but changed the pinky desire 1.8 a few weeks ago.
when using phone today a few apps kept force closing so i decided to reboot the phone.
it kept sticking on the loading screen, it would go black for a second as if it was about to load as normal but then it would loop back to the loading screen.
i tried factory reseting from clockwork recovery console then wiping cache and data and then re installing a rom.
now it just sits on the first HTC screen the one you get after powering up.
EDIT ; i have googled and had a bit of a search for answers. have tried most of them with no positive results.
have probably made things worse,
while waiting for a possible reply on here and various tinternet searches for my problem i was tryingh all sorts to get it working again.
and have now wiped the SD card data completley. so now i cant load a rom from the SD card.
i tried coping my sd card back up data from my pc back on to the card but it cant run the update.zip file to get into the recovery mode.
will i have to use my gold card to get some sort of working rom on my phone now?
OK first thing to try is ensure the SD card is formatted correctly, so boot into recovery and partition the SD card. You want 0swap, 512EXt2, and rest fat32. Then still in the partiton menu upgrade ext2 to ext 3.
Once that is done, while still in recovery you should see an option for usb toggle or or something it's called. With the usb lead plugged in this will mount your SD card on the computer so you can copy your rom onto it.
From there you should be able to flash in the usual way.
Edit: just re-read your second post, and realised you can't boot into recovery. You will need a card reader to put the update.zip on, or you should be able to flash an ruu. You'll likely need your goldcard for that, and then re-root afterwards.

i take it i dont need my gold card if my phone has been debranded?
the stock roms are ruu files and all the guides i have read including
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=696189
this one im guessing you need your phone to access htc sync..
if my phone is not loading up how can i put a stock rom or unroot from the recovery console?
i have managed to put back in the fake flash update zip and have that working now at least.. tried installing a custom rom zip from the SD card from recovery console on the phone but it is still stuck on the HTC screen.
Have u tried a stock rom, running an RUU? Do it like this enter bootloader and connect the phone to the computer it should be found by the computer, in your phone should apear fastbootUSB or bootloaderUSB, something like that..
Hope it works

case closed, thanks for the help and input guys..
i followed the guide
from benko286
1. Download this
2. Turn off Desire and then turn it on while holding back button to enter bootloader(white screen)
3. Once in "white screen" press power button again to enter bootloader
4. Connect Desire with PC
5. Press Volume Down and than Power to enter Recovery
6. Now the red triangle should show up, go to folder you downloaded file and press recovery-windows.bat, recovery-mac.sh or recovery-linux.sh depending on which OS you have
7. Now you are in recovery mode (green screen), press Wipe and than Wipe data/clear storage, than press optical tracker to confirm it
8. After that press Volume Down to go back to main menu in recovery
9. Navigate to Flash zip from sdcard using optical tracker, select .zip confirm it and wait until process finish, after that press Reboot system and unplug you Desire
10. Enjoy your new ROM
and it worked, for some reason i couldnt flash the rom using clockwork recovery mode, but this worked a treat..
was really pooping it cause i thought it was game over and welcome to a posh shiney door stop..
Nice one. Glad you got it sorted.

[Q] Half way through flashing rom - need urgent help

Hey, well I made a mistake (supprise). I was following a guide on here and mixing it up with cyanogen's own guide for flashing their rom and well basically I whipped my phone without having the rom on my ssd, i took the ssd out and put it into another phone to put the rom on and now when i put the ssd back in i'm getting:
E:can't mount /sdcard
when I try and install the rom from it.
Suggestions? Please tell me i've not bricked my phone. I only just realised I should have done a rom backup but it wasn't said it the guides I was following and i was so fixated on doing it word for word It only just poped into my head.
Cheers. Fast replies would be nice, I don't like sitting here with my phone in clockwork without anything on it.
:EDIT:
I have another ssd card current set up as a gold card. Could I use that? Both are htc supplied ssd cards.
Ok so i just pluged my gold card in and it could open it. Should I just use that or reformat my other ssd and use that instead?
:EDIT:
in the process of backing up my ssd and formating it, going to see if that fixes my problem. Figure I should probably start a new rom on a fresh ssd anyway.
Be nice to know for future if wiping everything is actually needed for roms
You said your goldcard was recognized correctly by the phone? Did you use another card before?
Where does the error occur, when downgrading or did you already downgrade and are already rooted and want to flash the rom already?

I've done everything but the flash so far. I was on the final bit and I had "full wipe" zip on my ssd and it opened fine and then i reset to factory settings and cleared cache and then my ssd couldn't be read any more so I couldn't flash with my rom.
However my other ssd which I had to previously format to turn into a gold card can have the zip's read on it. So I figure if I reformat the ssd I wish to use (not gold card) and put the rom back on it will be fine.
Also can you charge the battery while in recovery? I think my battery must be getting quite low now as it's been stuck in it a long time and was only about 40% when I started. I presumed 40% was enough to install a rom, didn't expect this delay of a few hours.
I'm also presuming I can't boot into anything any more as I think i've wiped the previous rom no?
Ok now after formating it and putting the rom on it says "no files found" :/. Does it even matter if I use a differnt ssd to flash as to the one I wish to use long term? i was under the assumption it would install other things to the SSD but now I realise thats probably totaly wrong.
:EDIT:
Put the rom on my other ssd and now also says no files found. it appears the rom is causing the problems?
Put the rom on my goldcard ssd and now also says no files found. it appears the rom is causing the problems? It could read the zips on that ssd 10min ago
If you did a full wipe you have to get it going again by flashing a new one ^^ So yes, go ahead with flashing. The Goldcard was especially necessary for the DHD to load the downgrade-zip, because when I did that originally it gave me an error (had wrong goldcard). Of course, I now have a working one, still using it.
You could try twice, like 1. reformat the sd you wish to use and put the ROM onto it or 2. use the other one to load the rom. Think about it, worst would be "yo man, wrong card"
Edit: this is confusing, indeed. So you actually did a new format of the SD and tried to open it in CWM and it says NO FILES FOUND?
Just to confirm a few things.
DHD rooted, S-OFF , etc....
Full wipe
Removed SD
SD No longer recognised
Rock > YOU < Hard Place
My suggestion, would be to format the first SDcard in your pc, copy ROM to it, place in the phone, reboot recovery.

Well aparently neither of my SSD's work. Is it possible to boot into clockwork without going into the software? Ie can i get into clockwork straight from boot? Because I might need to restart clockwork to get this to work now.

Exactly, but tryed and the moment I put this rom on it apperas it cant read the ssd.
Its cyanogen 7.02 and google addon.
Ok then, my formated ssd (which is apparently empty according to clockwork) formatted and was empty on windows, put the roms on it. When i plug it back in to windows it has all my old **** back on which was several gig so there is no way I accidently copyed that over with the roms and didn't notice.
You can boot directly to the bootloader by holding volume down then pressing power.
Did you download the ROM from ROM Manager or direct from here/cyanogen
EDIT: What version of clockwork you using?

Sure, Power off the DHD then hold Volume DOWN and press POWER. It then boots into Recovery.
I dont think you will have bricked it. As far as I know you cant brick a phone by flashing a rom. Bricking is as a result of radio installation gone wrong. If your SD card is being recognised, just wipe it and put in in empty. Then install the desired rom using ADB shell on your PC. About charging in recovery I think it will work. If not just turn the phone off and plug it into USB.
EDIT. This is sounding above my level of understanding now. Ignore my advice. I was assuming clockwork is behaving itself
Downloaded from CM7 them selves, ah ok I will reboot. Yup now neither of my ssd's have data on them apparently.
Rebooted recovery and now not working. I click to use an option and it just goes straight back to the top of the list, even reboot option.

I would suggest power charge instead of USB, because the real charger loads your phone faster due to lower power values over USB. Afaik.
OK, worst case scenario here is having to flash a 1.32 RUU and rooting, ENG S-OFF-ing again. I don't think your at that stage yet. Did you Radio S-OFF before this?

Ok then how do I use ADB, i was getting real confused by that earlyer today.

YES!

[Q] HTC Desire unable to mount SD card

Hi All,
I have a problem with my SD card. My phone doesn't recognise SD card after I created ext4 partition through partition magic on windows 7. Here is what happened.
- I have rooted desire running CM 7.0.3.
- I wanted to go back to Starburst 1.4 rom.
- I have class 4 16 gb sd card (fat + ext3) with 512 mb of ext3 and rest fat32 (this was when everything was running good)
- I flashed the new rom through CWM, but only got like 54 mb on sd left.
- So I manually formatted ext3 and changed it to ext4 using partition magic on windows 7 (connected sd card through a reader).
- After that I flashed the new rom, but still got the same size left.
- After that I went back to CM7.0.3 which is working fine for me.
However, at this time, my phone doesn't recognise my SD card.
- I saw that I can't format ext in recovery as i get this error
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2(File exists)
Error mounting SDEXT: !
I believe I was able to install CM7.0.3 coz it was a small rom was fit directly into phone's internal memory.
At this time, I can't see my SD card on phone. Can't play music or install any files or anything.
Looking for some quick help.
Thanks,
Satyam

Hi Matt,
So are you saying that you got your SD card formatted by someone else using Rom Manager ?
- As of now, when I click on the inbuilt ROM Manager in CM7, it says " The SD Card needs to be mounted to use ROM Manager!"
That means my SD card is abviously not read by my phone.
Looking for some help. I don't want to do something silly at this time.
Atleast, as of now my phone is not bricked and is working, just the SD is not.
Any suggestions/comments or link to my problem is more than welcome.
Thank You
Hmmm, i smell another usb brick here, we've had so many these days, and all by people using cwm and flashing gb sense roms...just to prove i'm right, can you connect the phone to your pc? If you're not able to do that, then u have 100% chance it's a usb brick.
OMG !! yeah you're right.. now when I connected my phone using a USB, it doesn't give me the option to "mount USB".
What do to from here ? I don't know what is a USB brick and am pretty poor with linux commands !!!
Plz help.. However I can see a a couple of ROMs through recovery mode in my SD card, but can't flash those which require an EXT.

Hi,
Are you saying that formatting SD card and making fresh ext partition through a media reader will not help in this case ?
I am very confused so to say.. I read the link that you posted, it talks about CID which I'm not able to find.. Can't see that option in fast boot (recovery).
Is there some other way to fix all this ?

Nope: i'm sorry but there is no other way...the problem lies in the misc partition, and that one doesn't get touched by simply toying with your sd, it's on nand, and no rom flashing/nandroid restore can touch it either. This process is the only way to go. CID can be obtained via adb command, i hope you'll have it installed and set up correctly.

Hi,
Okay I get it.. I need to fix my nand partition, now question -
1) I can figure out the 1st step "Find out your CID. Go into fastboot mode, and do 'fastboot oem boot" - Nothing happens when I click on fast boot option in recovery mode. The other method CID generator also asks for CID.. how do I get that.. that's my biggest question.
2) How can I see the rom version.
I know, I might me sounding stupid, but I'm not a pro.. used to love flashing new ROMs earlier and this time I just messed it up.
Need some step-by-step help.. I might be asking for too much, but I trust this forum and believe Android has too many fans hooked to it.. so I will get some help

Ok, sorry man, i was out for a ride
To see the CID you have to type "fastboot oem boot" in the terminal, after navigating to the path where you have the sdk, for example:
"cd c:/sdk/tools"
"fastboot oem boot"
Then you should get all the info, together with the CID ofc...obviously you need to have adb installed and working in order to do that (there ia a lot of tutorials for that, just use the search function).
As to rom version, you don't need it, just download the mtd0.img, open it with the hex editor and mod it with your CID, then go for the next step
I dont believe you have bricked your phone, i think you have created a partition on it without making it a primary partition along with the fat32 parition.
boot into recovery and mount your SD card to your PC. Reformat the whole card and then it should work again, you may just be able to go into your partition software and amend to show 'primary' on each, if not read on. Couple of options then, download ROM manager from the market and reformat the ext3 using rom manger if not do it via your windows software but make sure both partitions are set to 'Primary'.

It's a usb brick, not a plain brick: when you plug it to pc the phone usually doesn't even light up the led.
sorry, i read that he had full use of his phone bar the SD card
- I saw that I can't format ext in recovery as i get this error
E:Can't mount /dev/block/mmcblk0p2(File exists)
Error mounting SDEXT: !

hi, seems you got bad partition on your sd card, since it s normal that you can't mount sd while plug on usb.
did you already put out your sd card out the phone and try to read it with a usb scard reader plug on your computer??
cid error mean you have messed-up your misc partition which is the one in your nand where the recovery is located... didn't see any error about this in your thread...
in the boot, should fail with error misc partiton cid unknown etc...
have a try about sd card reader it's easer than misc error fix
give a try on this site and try using gparted cd live... don't need to be expert in linux command (it s a graphical interface) should you know that FIRST FAT32 PRIMARY partition and LAST EXT3 (is less fast but really more stable and relyable fs) PRIMARY partition
hi, still me sorry for spamming, just found a nice TUT using gparted on xda http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535914

Fixing misc doesn't take more than a minute if you have a working adb...repartitioning micro sd card takes loads of time instead, especially if it's big, coz you have to backup all of your data then copy them back, and that's a pain, especially if the sd isn't very fast.
Anyway you might be right there, just the other day a guy had a similar issue caused by multiple ext partitions not being recognized properly. I just thought it was a usb brick coz it's very common since the new gb sense roms rolled out and people started partitioning like crazy with cwm (which really SUCKS at that), and this either cause misc corruption or messed partitions on sd card: i'd suggest everyone to partition with amon them flash back any 3.0+ cwm to flash the rom, if you don't have the chance of using linux live cd (but you really should).
All sorted --------- RESLOVED !!!!
Okay Listen all Desire Owners-- I was able to fix this USB brick without having to go through all which was available on internet..
What I did -
1) Came home and formatted my EXT4 to ext3 and simply reflashed cm7 rom
All worked like charm - Now My SD card is mountable and works perfectly
Good for you
Anyway make sure you set up adb properly on your pc, it will save your life some day: it takes a while but it's worth it...i wouldn't get inti the rom flashing thing without it. Just a suggestion
Bests.

[Q] Loop after flash

Hello guys.
I've just tried to flash the cm7 Hboot but something went wrong and now when I turn on my HTC Desire, it is opening only the Alpharev Recovery (v2.5.1.8.used for the s-off) black screen with blue commands. I can also acceed to the fastboot and what I see is:
AlphaRev CM7 r2
BRAVO Pvt1 Ship s-off
Hboot-6.93.1002
.......
.......
radio-5.11.05.27
I try to explain what I did in case u need to know my mistakes
I've created a backup, wiped everything, installed the PB99IMG.zip from SD card (it took 1 second to do it...is it normal??) and I rebooted. Everything was fine when I turned my desire on. I had to set language etc. and I went to check on the Application options if the internal memory become bigger thanks to the cm7, but it was 180Mb as before (I think). So, I thought that it didn't work out and I entered again the fastboot. Here it asked me if I wanted to make an update...I did it and then I went to the recovery to restore my backup. From here on, everytime I switch on, it goes directly to the recovery screen. I tried to wipe alla gain and flash again the cm7, but I had always the same thing.
Another info...now, if i go to the fastboot and I select BootLoader: Hboot it ask me always for the update again....
What can I do?? Please Heeeeelp!
Thanks in advance!!
P.S. I don't have a microSd card reader and if I have to copy something on the sd (another rom or a ruu) I don't know how to do it as I cannot see the memory card from my pc when I connect it via usb and I am in recovery. Is there another way or should I run to some friend?
Which ROM are you using ? Rename PB99IMG.zip to something else or remove it. Download a proper ROM and flash using recovery
This was the first time that I flash something...so I think I have still the standard one.
I tried to install the cm7 because it is required to install the custom rom I wanted to try.
Never did before.
Now that I connect it via usb, I cannot access to the sd from the pc. Is there another way to modify or add something to my sd or I run to buy a minisd card reader?

You can access your SD card by enable it to USB from recovery, which recovery are you using ? Try to find it in the menu, should have something like "mount usb storage" under advance or storage option maybe

You can try non-sense (lol at this term) ROM first, did a backup then try other later. One that I tried very easy and stable is the Ginger Villain.

I had an Inc for a while, I have moved on to a RAZR maxx. I haven't worked on an Inc for a while. My friend asked me to help her. She is totally stock. Low storage space warning. Factory reset , from ROM or hboot , leads to android with triangle/exclamation mark. I think she tried to update OTA and the download failed. She has 3mb free. Under "SD and phone storage" the internal phone storage lists the total and available space as "unavailable". When I try to go to recovery from hboot it sounds like a bad hard drive, not the phone vibing but a drive spinning up an stopping a couple of times. Any help or recommendations? Thanks.

You need to do an ruu thru hboot. Download this http://dinc.does-it.net/Stock_Images/4.08.605.15/PB31IMG.zip and place it on your sdcard in no folders. Boot to hboot and wait a few secs, hboot should find the file and prompt you to press vol up to install. That will ensure everything is there and not corrupt.
Then you will want to root the phone, and flash the ext4 no data limit mod, or flash a rom that its built into. That will solve the low space issue.
Fyi, these phones do not have hard drives with spinning disks like pc's. They use flash memory which is a chip, no moving parts.

I pm'd cm for help, but figured I would start a thread. I tried to do an ruu through hboot, but the file isn't recognized. I formatted the SD on my computer using SD formatter 3.1 and also formatted in the phone. I downloaded the file twice. I tried 2 sd cards. I have flashed radios and such in the past, so I am familiar with the process, and it is ignoring the file on the SD card. The phone boots up and seems to run okay, but I can't factory reset it. I know that it has flash memory, I was trying to make the point that it isn't "vibing", but it is making a slight buzz when recovery is selected. Any help is appreciated.

What hboot version doed the phone currently have. If its 1.02 or 1.07 you can try to use htcdev site to unlock it, then get a custom recovery on there. If you can accomplish that, then you can see if recovery will see the sdcard. If it can read it, you can wipe everything and flash a custom rom.
