[Q] My Evo 4G won't flash newest radio update - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have the EODv2 Rom and I've been trying to flash the newest radio update EVO_Radio_2.15.00.05.02 and it's not working. Do I need to wipe anything before flashing? The file is in the root of my sd card but for some reason my phone stays on 2.15.00.11.19 after I flash. If anyone can help that would be great. Thanks

Use Amon Ra recovery if you're using clockwork.

No actually its from this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
I actually just scrolled through the thread and it said it doesn't work with Clockwork Mod 3.0.0 but it will work with amon_ra recovery but when I installed that from the market it wouldn't work. It says you can only use this feature with VaelPak (which is the only app for the results when I searched amon_ra in the market) and is what I downloaded. It also says if you are running Vaelpak you did not allow settings root when it prompted and to purchase Rapid Reboot from the market (which I did also). So when I tried to reboot into recovery from this Rapid Reboot app (which I had to pay for) it still boots me into Clockwork Mod! UGH! some of this stuff is so frustrating!

You can install Amon Ra in hboot. Go to their webpage for instructions. Clockwork fails more than it succeeds besides downloading roms. If you flash new radios, Wimax, etc with clockwork it won't work. Learn to flash manually and with both recoveries to achieve optimum results. Here's a link for the newest radios:

Damn, hard day?
I don't think you'll be finding amonRA recovery in the market.
Go to his thread, and DL the pc36img version of amonRA 2.3. Then (as other poster said) drop it in root of sd card, and reboot. The file (recovery) is actually posted in 2 of the 3 threads above yours. Check the thread labeled "bootloop, no recovery".
But I would still go to amons thread to check the md5 on it (astro file explorer displays md5s if you need).
Also, if you're using CWM now, you're probably using rom manager as well. If so, I believe you can scroll to bottom (in rom manager) and select 'install alternate recovery'.
Good luck

Clockwork or Armon?

I'm curious, who uses which and why?
*Amon. Oops
I personally use cw...but many people on this forum swear by amon bc they say it is more reliable... some roms require you to use amon to flash. ...I personally have never had issues flashing with cw...
Bottom line is that we have two good choices if you are a flashaholic

Amon-ra is my preference 0 errors. Clockwork is nice also, has its own app but people have reported a couple of flashing errors. Both are awesome all I can say is try out both see which one you like better.

I was kind of tempted with the features and GUI of Clockwork, but after reading a bit on here, it seems like Amon Ra is the reliable way to go. I'm new to Evo rooting and roms, but when I had my Nexus One, AR was absolutely the way to go. Rock freakin' solid.
Currently if you have a evo with hboot 2.02 or 2.10 the only recovery u can use after rooting is amon ra...just a fyi

Amon by far.
Amon_RA, since CWM doesn't work properly on newer hboots, and because CWM does not properly wipe partitions when you tell it to. Simple as that.

Im currently using CW...This is why I definitely want to use Ra... however when I flash it using rom manager, and then try any functions in Ra recovery is says "no zip files installed ".. any possible solutions??
I use Amon_ra because it backs up the wimax rsa keys. That's the only advantage I saw

The solution is to place your flashable .zip files to the base sdcard directory and not within a subfolder.

Like the person above said, Amon_RA 1.8.0 can only use ZIP files which are on the root of your SD card, not in a sub-folder. Version 2.0 (which Amon_RA has suggested will be coming soon-ish) will have folder navigation.
Amon Ra currently but I have used both. The reasons are clear it backs the RSA keys, and does clear when wiping.
Btw try #grep RSA /sdcard/nandroid/HT065HL*/(name of nandroid file)/wimax.img
You'll see where your RSA keys are stored in your nandroid.
I go back and forth.... I use amon ra for nandroid backups and serious flashes like radio pri nv all that jazz. I like clockwork for ease sometimes. I don't use app2sd. I use titanium to wipe davlik and repeat in either cw or amon ra just to be sure... They both have their good points. and bad

Question re: updating Radio, Wimax, PRI, NV, and hboot.

I was hoping someone could explain to me how to update the Radio, Wimax, pri, nv, and hboot and exactly what doing this does. I have been reading all over but can't seem to find any info on this or the steps to take to do this. I have cm recovery if it matters. Thanks in advance for the help. Much appreciated.
Put the radio zip. File on root of your sd card, then rename it PCIMG36zip. Then go into hboot recovery, it should pick the file up and ask if you want to flash, clik yes and then yes then when comolete reboot. As far as a kernal put on your sd root and then flash it in normal ra or cwm recovery dont update your hboot theres no reason to.

I've never had to do this yet and I've flashed a few roms. How do you know when its necessary?

Well, if you have an evo the new radio is kinda necessary for the fix to make your 3G better.

I provided a link below that are flashable in recovery and recommend using Amon instead of CW, but PCIMG36.zip and yes it is. All of these flashes are not required, but often do aid in performance when done correctly. In correctly, I mean both knowing what versions you have and selecting a custom ROM. Some require certain versions of items to avoid issues (wake lock, etc).
More importantly.....knowing that you are flashing a RADIO or complete package that can be found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=715485
and that doing anything with your phone (battery pull, stopping the process in any way) can and will probably lead to a useless paper weight. Flashing ROMS and MODS do not usually have such a great risk.

No worries, enjoy the tension of updating a radio....slow and steady.
I think this is the 1st phone I have owned that was so fickle about updates to radios and such. Theoretically these are called updates because they improve overall performance across the board. The Evo depends on location, Rom, mothers maiden name, high school gym teachers toupee color ect...

Recovery Problems with "RA" as Default

My problem is this, I had CMW as my default recovery and decided to install RA as my alternate recovery. Now RA is my default and I can't seem to get back CMW. I tried deleting CMW and then download it again from Market, but it always comes back as RA being my default recovery. So what am I doing wrong?
You could try deleting the recovery and reflash.

I do not know why you want to use Clockwork as Amon Ra is better, but search in development for ClockworkMod. Download as PC36IMG.zip and put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into bootloader, accept update, and you will have Clockwork recovery again

Having similar problem. Always used RA, but my girl just got a NS4G and installed CWM. Would like to now install CWM on the Evo, just in case I have to talk her through problems, will have better knowledge of what she us looking at.
Installed Rom Manager and hit the flash recovery option. The phone does its thing and Rom Manager says current recovery is Clockwork. Upon rebooting into recovery still have RA 2.3.
Any ideas how to get CWM to stick. Does anybody have a good pc.img?

do as mentioned above, download the recovery, rename it to pc36img.zip, go into bootloader, accept the update, and you'll have clockworkmod

Amon ra recovery

I am on amon ra 2.3. What are the benefits of updating to the newer(4.1?) recovery?
Sent from my PC36100 using xda premium
I am like you and am using an older version of Amon ra. I thought about updating to the newer version but since everything works great the way it is I decided to leave well enough alone. What I have does what I want without any problems.
Doc
If you search the development thread, you will find the changelog for ra recovery...I don't remember all of the additions, but the changelog will fill you in and you can decide from there if it is worth staying with something that works, or have something else that works with more options.
i was the same way and thought i would change phones before i needed a recovery different from Amon_ra 2.3. I did make the switch to smelkus and it is very very good. The batch wipes alone are worth the change.
Give it a try, it's not like you can't change back...
The automatic rebooting after backups is nice.
To change to the new amon ra recovery do I just place the new .img file in the root directory and then go to the bootloader to update right?

Easier way is to download the PC36IMG.zip off of smelkus's thread then boot into bootloader, it will read it like it does an ruu and then you hit the volume up button to install. Thats it
Edit: to save you some time, here is the zip from Smelkus's thread, remember to rename the file to PC36IMG
Love Smelkus version. No problems so far.

There's a lot to be said for how trick TWRP is, but...
The second I booted into this I remembered how great AR backups are. Simple, smart, easy on the eyes, easy to use... and yes, I agree, the WIPE menu in this version is so excellent that alone makes it worthwhile.
It would be perfect if the settings ("x"s) in NAND BACKUP held from one backup to the next.
Great work, highly recommended!!

need help stuck on htc evo 4g screen

i have an evo 4g with cm 7.2 rom and tiamat sbc kernel. i wanted the original kernel so i downloaded it from this site last night and unzipped it using clockworkmod. now my phone is stuck on the htc evo 4g screen. i am new and still am unfamiliar with most of this stuff but can someone please help?
also my phone is rooted:
supersonic evt3 ship s-on
hboot-2.18.0001
microp-041f
touch panel-atmel224_16ab
radio-2.15.00.12.19
not sure if that all matters. i tried restore in clockwork recovery and it didnt change anything....still stuck.
CWM blows. Wipe cache and dalvik and flash another kernel.
thanks for the reply.
i am new. how do i do that from recovery?
i did wipe the dalvik cache. is that enough? then i tried unzipping the tiamat sbc kernel and it was still stuck.
btw....is there a better rom that supports wimax???
If possible, upgrade to a Ra based recovery. That'll make the wiping and flashing easier on your part, as far as ROM choice, I'll give you sense.
I'll just leave this here....

Smelkus FTW. Best recovery out there.
Thanks button
<--- that way-ish
RA refers to Amon Ra, another popular recovery for the EVO. CWM is known for being troublesome on the EVO, so RA-based recoveries are the way to go.

Flashing recoveries for dummies:
STEP 1: Download recovery of choice (smelkusmod ra recovery)
STEP 2: Rename the zip to "PC36IMG.zip" and move to root of the SD card
STEP 3: Boot to bootloader and follow the prompts to update recovery
STEP 4: reboot to recovery
STEP 5: Prosper!!
(If this doesn't go to plan, unzip the pc36img and check the txt file and change the mainver to 1.00.000.0, zip the file again, and repeat from the beginning)
Hope this does the trick
Tried it. Read that whole thread. What is fastboot? When I select it in recovery it doesn't seem to be the same as what everyone talks about. My recovery in clockelwork alternate recovery looks like the original and doesn't do anything special.

PM me and I'll help you sort this out once and for all when I get some free time.
Try this. Download the Smelkus recovery and place it on the root of your SD card (not in any folders). Rename the file PC36IMG.zip (make sure you don't have an extra .zip extension on the end or it won't work). Once this is done, turn the phone OFF and unplug your phone from your computer. Once the phone is OFF, hold down the volume DOWN button, then press the power button and wait for the HBOOT screen to load. If everything works as it should, you'll get a prompt asking you if you want to update. Use the appropriate keys to select YES, then wait for the update to load. When you go into HBOOT, as part of its loading process, it looks for a file on the SD card named PC36IMG.zip and when it finds it, will ask if you want to update. Also, make sure you don't have more than one file on your SD card named PC36IMG.zip, or you'll have issues. Once you've got the recovery loaded, you can re-namethe file on your SD card something like PC36IMG1.zip, to avoid any issues should you have to use HBOOT to install another PC36IMG.zip file down the road.
That's what I did but I did it all from my phone. Does that matter?

That's what I'm telling you to do. You can actually download the PC36IMG to your phone, but you'll have to move it to the root of your SD card using something like Astro File Manager. That's why most instructions say to hook your phone up to a PC and download the PC36IMG to the root of the SD card.
When you press the volume down button and power button, what happens?

I get what looks like the original recovery. I got cwm and flashed the alternate recovery. I tried shutting the phone down to bootloader and it will try to flash the img. Then it gets stuck on parsing. I changed the maniver and then it says no image when flashing and there's nothing about an update. I'm s-on.
