Bought New MicroSD, Got New Problems - Xperia Arc Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi chaps
Purchased a Kingston Class 4 32GB MicroSD today
However, since inserting this card to my phone it has become unrealistically slow. Lagging all over, force closing to no end & just extremely sluggish & unresponsive on many tasks. Forget browsing the music/picture library, it just shows the 'loading' icon etc. Everything related to the SD takes ages to load or cache.
I've tried formatting, rebooting etc & this persists. I can't for the life of me understand this. As you can imagine this is extremely frustrating coming from a stock Class 2 SD 8GB Card. Is there a particular procedure in which to format the card or something else?
Looking like a right waste of money thus far 'sigh'
Cheers

Looks like I jumped the gun, seems like the phone was just sorting itself out but all is in order. If a mod passes eyes on this thread, please close.

16gb Class 6 Micro SD?????

I started out using a 2gb card for my Tilt 2 and everything worked great but when I purchased a Polaroid 16gb class 2 Micro SD card, I noticed a significant drop in performance on my Tilt 2. I began to get lock ups when trying to access all things associated with the card (ie: stored photos, documents, etc.) Even my touch flo would be less responsive.
When I put the 2gb back in the TIlt 2, everything went back to working flawless.
I have since then ordered an A-Data 16 gb Class 6 Micro SD card after returning the Polaroid Class 2 hoping that the class 6 will do the trick. Should arrive on Wed. keeping my fingers crossed!!!
any one experience any similar issues???
I dont know exactly where I read this, but I think the class level only affects write speed. You probably just experienced lag because it takes a while for your phone to search through 16gb of data.

*edit*
that thread below is where the write info came from.

[Q] fix for sluggish SD card

2 days ago the SD card, that came with my Desire died. It was a 4 GB Class 2 Sandisk, so it wasn't really the best of the best, but it never really felt sluggish, or anything. It had a 512 mb ext 4 partition, and I used it with MIUI XJ X-Part ROMs. It was quite fast, so there was really nothing to complain about. But it died horribly. Couldn't reformat, it looked like it only has 30 mb space, tried just about every solution google and xda had to offer, nothing helped.
So, I decided to buy a bit bigger, better one. Yesterday I bought an 8 GB Kingston, class 4. I figured, that it would be slightly better, since it supposed to be faster. I created a 1024 mb ext 4, rest is fat32, so I'd have plenty of space to app2sd+. I made some test with an app named SD Tools, and it says it in fact is a bit faster.
But here's the kicker. The phone is much-much-much slower, in every aspect: the boot takes 3-4 times longer, some of the apps are sluggish and take more time to load than usual, Titanium Backup takes forever to restore the apps, and even it performs the backup (and the restore) in _recovery_ significantly slower. If I delete the ext partition, and format the whole thing to fat, the boot takes the usual time, and as far as I can tell, everything is back to normal.
What could be the problem? Could it be, that I ****ed up something at the partitioning? Maybe the ext partition is too big? I tried modifying the read_ahead settings too, but it didn't really help. I use the newest MIUI XJ XPart (1.4.8). Thanks in advance.
I know it doesn't help much, but i bought a 16gb class4 kingston msd card to replace the card that was included with my desire and it seems to also under-perform as you mention.
Subsequently, i have picked up a samsung 8gb class 6 from Play.com for only £12.99 and the performance is awesome. I would highly recommend it for the desire!

ah, man just bought one of these myself and I'm waiting for it to arrive. Reckon it's worth giving it a shot in my phone, seeing if it's actually good enough, or should I send it straight back? What ROM were you using?
My boot time got better after a while. I tried every possible combination of a second partition: 512 mb, 1024 mb, ext3, ext4, with or without linux swap. Nothing really helped. Finally I decided to go with 512 mb ext4, a 32 mb linux swap. The first boot was like 10 minutes, but from what I understand, that's to be expected with this kind of ROMs. But even after that it wasn't booting that fast: 2-3 minutes on the HTC splash screen, and then and other 3-4-5 on the ROM's boot animation. (I was actually timing them while watching TV).
But I finally decided to let it go, I accepted that nothing I do can change this, so I started to setup the apps & stuff, and I tought if it's still really slow, then maybe next week I can buy another (different brand, maybe Maxwell) SD.
But. The bastard started to get faster. I noticed that the boot after changing the theme with MIUI theme manager was way to quick. Decided to time it again. It was 4 minutes. That's considered FAST seeing the prev. boot times. I restarted twice, with the same result: 3-4 minutes. I didn't really know what to think. I went out shopping some food, talked with my girlfriend, watched an episode of Bones, etc. Just out of curiosity, couple of hours later I decided to do another boot test. It was just under 2 minutes. What. The. Hell.
Fired up the previously used SD Tools, did 4 tests, just to exclude any "false positive". The reading speed didn't really change, but the writing got faster. Like 2,5-3 times FASTER. Some of the apps still seem to be starting slowly (yes Tweetdeck, I'm talking about you), but it's a LOT better, than it was right after the install. Weird. I know that with A2SD+ ROMS android is copying some stuff to your SD on the first boot and stuff, but it's been like 10 hours since that install... I don't really know what to think.

Phone says damaged external SD card? (32GB Lexar Class 10)

Brand: Lexar 32GB Class 10
(I'm a big fan of Lexar. After my personal experience with prior Lexar SD chips in my previous phones and after countless hours of research, I'm loyal to Lexar. So the brand isn't the issue.)
I take lots and lots of pictures and video.
I had over 3000 photos on my phone and a few 1080p video.
I play xplane simulator game a lot and after a while the phone can get pretty warm.
So I'm thinking...(I do have a case on the phone as well.)
Could the heat from playing the game be responsible for the error message I'm receiving?
It said something along the lines of, "Damaged external SD storage..."
Right now I'm recovering the files and reformatting the card.
Now I'm a little gun shy to put it back in even after reformatting, because I don't know if it'll go out on me again...
I don't see any physical damage so it has to be file corruption caused by heat?
i have a Class 4 32GB Lexar, it is okay, not my favourite, too slow for my taste
have you tried re-partitioning the disk and formatting it?
i've been using a 32GB ADATA class 10 on my T989 for 2 weeks now, one night i left some game running for 10+ hour after i passed out playing the game and when i woke up the phone was burning at 50c
all my stuff are still in good shape in my SD card and phone itself
so, IMO i think your card was not affected by the heat, rather it's just wearing out, or it just needed a clean up
You do know Flash storage have limited writes, right?
it's not like a PC hard drive with unlimited rewrites
It's very normal for a 32G class 10 card to have problems. Look at newegg or amazon reviews. All class 10 cards (any brand) has a LOT of complaints saying card died. So I avoid putting important stuff in SD card altogether.
rather than avoid, you should keep multiple backups of important stuff
that's why i keep multiple copies of my SD cards
32GB SD Card issues with Galaxy S2
Hi all,
Got a similar problem here.
Transcend Class 10 32GB Card
Works in PC, HTC Desire - no probs.
Put in Galaxy S2, it starts Media Scanning, a few seconds later reports SD Card Damaged, requires formatting.
It's right - take it back out (again, umpteenth time!), put it in PC or HTC - card is "damaged". (Nothing permanent, can reformat.)
Samsung support claim to not know anything - mind you they "play dumb" about the camera "pink spot" issue, until you challenge them to get real...
Oh, dear!

External SD vs. cold temperatures (solved)

Guess this is mostly a canadian concern, but has anyone else's external SD mysteriously been deactivated when the phone is exposed to temperatures below freezing for relatively long periods of time ?
For example, taking a walk outside for +/- 30 minutes when the temperature is around -10°C (~ 14°F).
It behaves exactly as if it's being manually deactivated in Setting --> Storage.
The card comes back to life after leaving the phone untouched for 5 minutes on the table upon returning to "normal" room temperature (~ 21°C / 70°F).
Never encountered this issue with the exact same SD card in my good ol' GS1 (i9000m), so I'm wonderring if it's the GS3 that doesn't tolerate the cold very well of if it's my SD card that's getting old.
---
EDIT
It was indeed the external SD card that seemed to be the problem. Switched temporarily to a 16Gb SD from my old GS1 i9000m and couldn't reproduce. Have bought a Sandisk Ultra 64Gb Class 10 micro SD card since then and couldn't reproduce with it either.
Glad it's not the phone! :victory:
Re: External SD vs. cold temperatures
I've had stuff like this happen, (Canadian as well). I always thought it was due to moisture but it's never been a big issue
Sent from my SGH-I747 using xda premium
Normal Operating Temperatures for SD Cards are: -13ºF to 185ºF (-25ºC to 85ºC)
There's a possibility that the SIII can't read the SD cards under cold conditions?
I'm not 100% sure, as I've only owned my S3 for a week and a half, and still playing and tweaking it..
I also live in Canada (Montreal), so our weather conditions are about the same.. So i will let you know if i encounter this problem or not?
I would try to re-format your card?? maybe that will help??
Use the Panasonic SD Formatter Software for Windows, and then I format inside my S3 for best performance.
Try that, maybe it will help???
It's an issue when :
Your camera is set to record images/videos on that SD card and you want to use it
You meet someone on your way and want to show that person pictures you've taken

If you're courageous enough, go take a walk outside today, or this evening, and see if you can reproduce.
Temperature a freakin' cold enough for it to happen these days! lol
Also, it's been discussed that most people think that SanDisk Extreme III is the SD card for extreme temperatures.
Which brand? is it?

Lexar 16Gb ... class 6
But like I said, this exact same card used to be in my GS1 and never encountered this issue back then.
Re: External SD vs. cold temperatures
I had an issue last week where, when I was outside on a job site, my sd card became corrupted. Lost everything on it and the card was damaged so badly I couldn't even reformat it to get it working. Had to get a new card. Don't know if it was coincidental or not. It was only about -4 C.
Mine got corrupted as well the first time as I didn't expect this to happen.
I kept trying to access it up to a point where when it was available again it got corrupted.
Had to format it and lost everything.
Since then, when this happens, I let the phone sit for a while and never had data corruption since.
Still curious to know if this is phone or memory related...

Using External SD memory as internal

Hi Moto ppl, today I get a brand new Micro SD Class 10 of 64GB of sweet storage space, and I dunno what to do with it, wirth this I mean since Motorola knows better and don't force-close the option to use SD as internal memory like Sam**** or LG. I dunno if it's worth to use my new memory as Internal or just leave it as a regular external SD to my media files as usual.
On purpose I get the class 10 version to get faster transfer speed from which I look up it has around 45mb/s so it's not bad at all.
Reading a lot of this feature some ppl may say that is not fully-recommendable because the phone gets lag-down so it reduces his overall performance even when you use the faster SD you can get since it's not part of the main board of the phone.
Other ppl says that when you get a Class 10+, UHS, etc SD you will be fine.
I want to ask you guys if somebody already try this on your Moto Z Play I know I will get around 91GB of total space wich is a lot, but since I PLAY A LOT of games, leaving those 64GB to my gamepedia is really sweet. But I dunno If will be against having performance issues?
Regardless I will try it and post my first tests here over time.
Cheers!
