Guess this is mostly a canadian concern, but has anyone else's external SD mysteriously been deactivated when the phone is exposed to temperatures below freezing for relatively long periods of time ?
For example, taking a walk outside for +/- 30 minutes when the temperature is around -10°C (~ 14°F).
It behaves exactly as if it's being manually deactivated in Setting --> Storage.
The card comes back to life after leaving the phone untouched for 5 minutes on the table upon returning to "normal" room temperature (~ 21°C / 70°F).
Never encountered this issue with the exact same SD card in my good ol' GS1 (i9000m), so I'm wonderring if it's the GS3 that doesn't tolerate the cold very well of if it's my SD card that's getting old.
---
EDIT
It was indeed the external SD card that seemed to be the problem. Switched temporarily to a 16Gb SD from my old GS1 i9000m and couldn't reproduce. Have bought a Sandisk Ultra 64Gb Class 10 micro SD card since then and couldn't reproduce with it either.
Glad it's not the phone! :victory:
Re: External SD vs. cold temperatures
I've had stuff like this happen, (Canadian as well). I always thought it was due to moisture but it's never been a big issue

Normal Operating Temperatures for SD Cards are: -13ºF to 185ºF (-25ºC to 85ºC)
There's a possibility that the SIII can't read the SD cards under cold conditions?
I'm not 100% sure, as I've only owned my S3 for a week and a half, and still playing and tweaking it..
I also live in Canada (Montreal), so our weather conditions are about the same.. So i will let you know if i encounter this problem or not?
I would try to re-format your card?? maybe that will help??
Use the Panasonic SD Formatter Software for Windows, and then I format inside my S3 for best performance.
Try that, maybe it will help???
It's an issue when :
Your camera is set to record images/videos on that SD card and you want to use it
You meet someone on your way and want to show that person pictures you've taken

If you're courageous enough, go take a walk outside today, or this evening, and see if you can reproduce.
Temperature a freakin' cold enough for it to happen these days! lol
Also, it's been discussed that most people think that SanDisk Extreme III is the SD card for extreme temperatures.
Which brand? is it?

Lexar 16Gb ... class 6
But like I said, this exact same card used to be in my GS1 and never encountered this issue back then.
Re: External SD vs. cold temperatures
I had an issue last week where, when I was outside on a job site, my sd card became corrupted. Lost everything on it and the card was damaged so badly I couldn't even reformat it to get it working. Had to get a new card. Don't know if it was coincidental or not. It was only about -4 C.
Mine got corrupted as well the first time as I didn't expect this to happen.
I kept trying to access it up to a point where when it was available again it got corrupted.
Had to format it and lost everything.
Since then, when this happens, I let the phone sit for a while and never had data corruption since.
Still curious to know if this is phone or memory related...

4 times now, when my battery has died, I get an error that the SD Card is damaged and I have to reformat it. It happens with the stock 16GB card and a Lexar 16GB class 6 card that I bought.
Any idea what's going on? It's a pain in the a$$ to recover all my pics, etc. And I'm not backing up very frequently.
Thanks!
Seems that the phone has a problem on it corrupting the mem cards. I would assume the mem cards are good and well (and also the fact you tried 2 cards already). Looks to me like a phone problem which is rare. My phone dies of lowbatt also but my memcard is still fine and has all data inside it intact.
If you can reproduce the everytime then best to have it replaced if under warranty. If not, then everytime it goes really low and you can't charge, off the phone totally until you can charge or otherwise remove the memcard to avoid it getting corrupted.
Let it check at a service point.
Mine dies when the battery is too low, too but the memory card is fine afterwards.

Used to have a similar problem with my sd card but it was a card issue("class 6, eBay, China...) as in after any boot it would show as corrupted. If you're sure it's a genuine sd card and you've no suspicions about your Rom then it's defo a hardware problem.

Brand: Lexar 32GB Class 10
(I'm a big fan of Lexar. After my personal experience with prior Lexar SD chips in my previous phones and after countless hours of research, I'm loyal to Lexar. So the brand isn't the issue.)
I take lots and lots of pictures and video.
I had over 3000 photos on my phone and a few 1080p video.
I play xplane simulator game a lot and after a while the phone can get pretty warm.
So I'm thinking...(I do have a case on the phone as well.)
Could the heat from playing the game be responsible for the error message I'm receiving?
It said something along the lines of, "Damaged external SD storage..."
Right now I'm recovering the files and reformatting the card.
Now I'm a little gun shy to put it back in even after reformatting, because I don't know if it'll go out on me again...
I don't see any physical damage so it has to be file corruption caused by heat?
i have a Class 4 32GB Lexar, it is okay, not my favourite, too slow for my taste
have you tried re-partitioning the disk and formatting it?
i've been using a 32GB ADATA class 10 on my T989 for 2 weeks now, one night i left some game running for 10+ hour after i passed out playing the game and when i woke up the phone was burning at 50c
all my stuff are still in good shape in my SD card and phone itself
so, IMO i think your card was not affected by the heat, rather it's just wearing out, or it just needed a clean up
You do know Flash storage have limited writes, right?
it's not like a PC hard drive with unlimited rewrites
It's very normal for a 32G class 10 card to have problems. Look at newegg or amazon reviews. All class 10 cards (any brand) has a LOT of complaints saying card died. So I avoid putting important stuff in SD card altogether.
rather than avoid, you should keep multiple backups of important stuff
that's why i keep multiple copies of my SD cards
32GB SD Card issues with Galaxy S2
Hi all,
Got a similar problem here.
Transcend Class 10 32GB Card
Works in PC, HTC Desire - no probs.
Put in Galaxy S2, it starts Media Scanning, a few seconds later reports SD Card Damaged, requires formatting.
It's right - take it back out (again, umpteenth time!), put it in PC or HTC - card is "damaged". (Nothing permanent, can reformat.)
Samsung support claim to not know anything - mind you they "play dumb" about the camera "pink spot" issue, until you challenge them to get real...
Oh, dear!

But with that "issue" u could be creating false memory and saving stuff not on ur SD card. This phone does come with internal memory I believe 32 gb or 16gb so u could have a total of 96 gb in ur pocket!!! I only have 80gb haha

Well, i can proudly say that im a holder of my new 64 gig plus SGS3 phone, well technically its a 64 gig, its actually packing a 16 gig internal memory, modication made thanks to the sd2internaltosdexternal. i was able to swap my 16 gig to my 64 gig, and made my phone think that its actually using a 64 gig internal memory, never looked back, im a happy camper. I got the 64 gig mobile ultra class 10 memory card, its actually runing faster and smoother then the internal one does, ive tested it with speeds of 13-17+ write, read 35+, it averages thought, so yeah ure phone can support upto 2 terrabytes thanks to the SDXC chip support ure phone has (SDXC is new technology thats able to pack large amount of data into one single device big or small without loss of memory maximum capacity of 2 terrabytes), so regardless if u can where to have a 2 terrabyte microsd card which prob wont happen until 5 years from now, ure phone should be able to read it on the exception u can actually get it to work by partitioning ure sd card either in fat32/or extfat.
I had one... Then flashed cm10 and it corrupted it. Some roms don't format it so keep an eye out. Have a dead sd card now

just pop the card out put it in a usb reader and reformat it in windows its VERY unlikely that a flashing could actually "break" a sd card.

That is very much correct, flashing won't damage ure sdcard, it can corrupt the software to read it but easily fixed by reformatting through windows or third party format. Only time an sd card gets damaged and goes dead is when the sd card is unable to take excessive heat from ure phone, short circuits, or are fake sdcard which are lots of them out-there, all which will defect easily or through what I mentioned.
well not entirely true. usually the sd card can "take" more heat than the phone can (they are tough little buggers) IT IS possible to software damage them. they have an electronic "bit flip" inside some of them to set read only state.
We have these wee little 808 spy camera's we use on airplanes and rockets. some sandisk cards particularly can have this bitflip occur if power is "interupted" violently to the SD card. the card enter permanent read only mode and no one has figured out a way to fix them short of sending them back to sandisk for warranty replacement.
but this is highly unlikely to happen in an android phone in fact we think this is particular to the the way the firmware in the camera "accesses" the cards ie its doing it goofy which results in that bitflip or whatever it is
just get a reader and reformat the card you should be fine.

Again that's why I said that it's not likely that the phone will damage the sdcard if it's a lagit card..... Specially if it is a fake sdcard it will get damage easily under heat that the phone would be able to take.... Now flashing isn't known to damage sd cards but short circuits that a phone can make will.... It has enough to current to damage it.
again? again what? I said nothing to contradict anything you said (relevant parts) so again what?
and assuming you meant "legit" as in not "fake" sd cards thats not relevant no one was talking about fakes. once you enter "fake" territory all bets are off as to what might kill it

I have an unlocked Rogers Samsung Captivate Glide (i927R) running gingerbread (since Kies doesn't want to update it to ICS, and I haven't gotten around to rooting it), and it seems to be eating through SD cards. I had a 32gb micro SD card in there, but the phone decided to stop reading it after about a month and a half. Nothing else can read the card either; not my computer, not another phone, not even my camera can read the card. This is the second 32gb card it's happened to, and I'm starting to think that maybe it's my phone. When I have the card in the phone, it simply says "Unavailable" when I check under storage, although the phone can still read other SD cards.
Does anyone else have problems with this phone (i927R) killing SD cards? Am I simply just overloading the SD card, or is there some possibility that the phone is burning them out? Should I go for a 16gb card and see if it doesn't burn out, since smaller cards seem less likely to burn out?
Any help is appreciated.

The last one that burned out was a Transcend, and I don't remember what the first one was. but I don't think it was a particularly high quality brand. I will be sure to get a better quality card next time.
Do you think downsizing to a 16gb card would reduce the chances of a burnout?

It's a crapshoot man ... I've had kingstons bad out of the box at a couple of sizes, the flash drives I had die were 16gb Corsair USB3's and rated with high speed..
just make sure you get a class 10 and read up on some reviews ... Newegg is really great for it, lookup the brand, price etc. and then to buy it at a local store and have them price match...
I should really get in the habit of backing up all the information on my phone more than once i run out of space
*EDIT* .. The current one I use is G.Skill 32GB .. Lifetime Warranty. Comes w/ full size SD adapter.
Anyone else getting this error? I have a 64M SanDisk that was working just fine in my note 2. I put it in my notes and I continually get this error. I unmounted, removed and power cycled my phone but it comes back any time I try to access the card. Any ideas?
I would backup the contents of it onto your computer and reformat the card. Then try it.
I've been getting this error when my phone wakes after being idle for a long time. I've tried reformatting the card but I'm skeptical that will fix the problem. According to many online threads, this issue has been widespread across a number of devices, and my card (Sandisk 64GB Ultra CL10) works fine in other devices. Will report back.
This is a common problem with the Samsungs...There is a proper process, as follows.
First, go ahead and do a fresh format of the card and get the contents onto the card.
Second, turn the phone completely off AND REMOVE THE BATTERY.
Put the card into the card slot, replace the battery and power the phone back on.
This has been my process since the sII, and haven't had any issues, save a few completely corrupted cards which were unsalvageable. There is an issue where the card receives current from the battery, and in some cases can corrupt the card and in even fewer (but still entirely plausible cases) completely fry the SD.
I'm not sure why Samsung hasn't caught the issue, or even acknowledged it, but this process avoids it entirely.
Hope this helps
Thanks, I tried that but it made no difference.
The uSD card continues to work fine in my other devices, and diagnostic tests reveal no problems with it, so I'm confident the card itself is ok.
I'm trying another card now (this one 32GB), but I'm guessing the problem will occur with that one too.

Sounds a lot like what happened to my last card in my Note 2. I was able to get a replacement under warranty and haven't had a problem with it happening since.
Well, my guess was wrong. The 32GB card I switched to is actually working fine--no recurrences of the unexpected-removal error.
So I guess there's a problem with the 64GB card, even though it was fine until I switched it from the Note 3 to the Note 4 (and I handled the card carefully).
Good thing, though. It's easier to RMA the uSD card than to exchange the Note 4.

Yup, SanDisk Ultra 64GB. I had no problems with it in my Note 3, though.
I have a scan disk 64GB card that I took out of my Note 2 (rooted) and put in my Note 4. I started getting random unmounted errors.
Finally last night I pulled out the SD card and threw it in my computer. Sure enough it came up and said I had some corrupted files. I fixed the files. Dumped the SD card to my HD and then formatted the card in my phone. Then I put my music, pics, videos, and a couple of files for apps aback on the disk. So far no more SD card issues.

Flickr gives you a free terabyte of storage that you can auto-sync your phone's photos to. That way you don't have to buy a large SD card, and you don't have to worry as much about losing photos due to disk corruption.
Yeah, I tried formatting my SanDisk several times and kept getting the same issue any time the phone tried to access data or write to it. I put in an old 32M cheapo brand and have had no issue at all

I'm happy to report that the RMA replacement for my Sandisk Ultra 64GB uSD card arrived today (the replacement is a Pixtor rather than an Ultra), and so far it's working flawlessly.
I have been dealing with this error with my Sandisk 64gig also. Didn't have a problem with it on my Note3. I have reformatted to numerous formats. Anyone know of a specific one that works. Always have had trouble out of Sandisks on Samsung galaxy products. Some I don't , but I have had this problem on at least 5 different devices. I have always read that the thing to do is go with Samsung brand SDs. The new 64gig Samsung is apparently faster than any other micro SD. However, since I have paid for this one, I'd like to use it.
