So I have my DHD since Oct, and I just recently noticed the screen seems to be off center, or misaligned. It's not a big issue, but I'm curious if others are like mine. If you look at the pics you can see the black boarders on each side of the screen, and the one on the right is bigger, but it's not just a thicker boarder, but if you look close (if you look at yours you may need to angle it in light to see the true boarder and the emptyness) you can see the screen seems to be positioned more to the left, and it seems to go from top to bottom (meaning at the top the boarder is right next to the screen, and the gap gets bigger as it gets to the bottom). Inside the boarder there is black empty space, but only on the right side. The left side is right next to the boarder. It almost seems like the screen underneath the glass is shifted. I hope I didn't confuse anyone, but I'm just wondering if it is misaligned there may be a way to fix it.

Really? Why would they put more space on the right side? I'm not talking about the space from the bar with the apps, phone, and settings to the end of the wallpaper, but the space from the wallpaper to the painted black boarder on the glass.

oh i can see it now, no i dont have that black border maybe email htc about it?
Mine also same...right side gap and today i give to service centre .
first the updated software but solution. Then they received and said to change LCD. Now waiting to come...from service center..
Wow, never really noticed about this, until i saw this thread, mine is also slightly off center to the left.. But not noticeable and i can live with it.. very hard to see the differences.. less than a milimeter..
I've just noticed this on mine, only had it since launch! Mine looks almost as if its mounted at a slight anti clockwise angle.
Looks like HTC QC team were on holiday when the DHD was released!
Miny is a tiny bit off centre too, although I would have never noticed if it was not mentioned here. I would be prepared to live with it but I also have a spec of dust under the screen since new and I also have the camera blur problem, so this squint screen if the final straw for me... it's going back to HTC. Hopefully with these 3 problems I will get a new handset from them rather than a repair. There's only so much you can polish a turd

Yeah I just noticed it on mine about a week ago. I probably wouldn't have, but I was trying different cases, and one made it look funny, so I looked closer. At first I thought it was the case, but then saw it was the screen. Without the case on I don't really notice it. Funny you say that about the spec of dust. I have one also. on the opposite side of the volume rockers. I can only see it on a pure white background. Thanks for you input. I was just wondering how may were like that. It seems like more than just me.
Reply from HTC
I emailed HTC about the screen being off center, and I included the pics form this thread, and even gave the link. Here is what they replied with:
"Thank you for your inquiry regarding the display on your HTC Desire HD device.
If this issue coincided with the installation of a third party application, please remove the application and evaluate the result. If removal of the application appears to resolve the issue, the application is likely the cause and you should contact the application provider for further assistance.
If no third party application is involved, please soft reset your phone by powering it off, removing the battery, waiting ten seconds, and then reinserting the battery and restarting the device.
If your device's display continues to be off center, I recommend you restore it to its factory default settings by performing a factory data reset. This will permanently erase all installed programs and data files on your phone; you will therefore want to first back up all files to your storage card or to a third party application from the Android Market. Use HTC Sync to back up Outlook contacts and calendar files, or Google Sync to back up your Google contacts and calendar. Calendar events are color-coded: green for Outlook, blue for Google, and orange for Exchange. You can back up text and picture messages by forwarding them to an email address. It will not affect files on your storage card.
To reset your phone, please press Home > MENU and then tap Settings > SD & phone storage > Factory data reset > Reset phone > Erase everything.
If a factory data reset does not resolve your device's issue, I recommend you contact our HTC Return Merchandise Authorization (RMA) and Repair Department for further assistance. Please contact them by dialing 1-888-617-1113. Their business hours are 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time seven days per week. Please have the device serial number (S/N) available when you contact them. You can find the S/N in the battery compartment of your phone.
If you need to contact us again, please include the device S/N in your response."
I guess maybe a factory reset will reposition the screen?
And who says Customer Service responses are scripted.
Of course, a factory reset will magically reposition the screen. Why didn't we think of that.
factory reset not work for me..........my desire hd sent to HTC head office.
You guys want QC issues? On the first DHD I had 2 weeks ago, the speaker grill above the screen was not straight. It was on a 2-3 degree slant and was visible, especially when using it with a case.

I have that too. The left side of the grill is almost touching the bottom right by the screen while the right side is up a bit more. You can really see more of the aluminum in between the right side than the left, so I have a dust particle under the screen, the screen is off center, and the grill is slanted. I'm calling HTC to get a new one for sure.
UPDATE
Well well well. I sent my phone to HTC to fix my issues. Just got it back today. 100% perfect! The screen is positioned beautifully. They even removed the one little spec of dust that I had trapped there. I really thought it would come back with a note saying they couldn't fix anything. I am very impressed. I guess with the screen being off center is what made the SIM cover be off also. When I looked at the phone from the front the right side SIM cover was in more than the left. Well now it's 100% perfect! The only thing they didn't (couldn't) fix is the speaker grill being at a slight angle. Since it's CNC'd into the aluminium body they would have had to replace the entire body. I can live with that now that the rest is perfect. Oh and I know it's my same phone since I made little tiny marks where only I could see them, and they are still there now.
could you stop to report problems in your devices? i'm pretty sure if i'll look further i'll find some issues too, and i will blame it on you! =oP
until now i didn't find anything, but the glass of the right side of the screen is a little bit off of the frame and everytime i need to pull down the notification bar i feel like i'm fingering paper... weird thing!

LOL Yeah mine had that too. On both sides. Like the screen was lower than the frame, but now everything is flush and even. I got my phone originally out of the second batch HTC made, so maybe they corrected all the problems, because now it's perfect.
i told you so, a issue just appears today! =o\ i'm stuck in car mode, according to my searches, a short in charger cable let you mobile feels like you plugged in a car dock, what active car mode... but, now it believes i'm in a dock even with cable unplugged... i guess i should create a thread about it! =o\
Geez, I have been fighting with getting the back cover fully attached for an hour. Is there some secret to this?????? There is always 1 clip that will not lock in. Usually the bottom left OR right.
Never had a problem with any other Samsung Plastic backs on 3 other devices!
Bah humbug!
the bottom 4 (2left and 2right) you have to slide in first. if you look at the 2nd ones up from the bottom they're shaped like hooks. so you have you slide them in the press down and the others will click on
it really is more of a hassle than it should be , but working bottom to top on both sides at the same time seems to work for me...
Sent from my Xoom using xda premium
I must have messed up one of those cheezy plastic hooks ... just can't get it to lock in. Argggghhh ..... wtf do you expect for $729 anyway! The bottom left side (right at the curve) just won't snap in. UFB!
It gets easier once you get a feel for it. The first two side ones are a pain, but if you push down and inward, it flexes the cover upward a bit and they pop right in.
I can forsee now the need eventually for a new cover when the tabs wear down

But I actually like how you have to click it back it. Its fun for me and I keep doing it even though its unnecessary lol

Yes, sounds weird!
Its defiantly more difficult than the SII was, I found that the first pin on the right is the hardest. I stick the bottom two in then work my way from right to left, and it works ok for my device. It was funny as hell watching the guy in the Bell store struggle with it after putting the battery in, took him almost 5 minutes .
No issues here...

I must have damaged 1 of the bottom clips. F'in ridiculous. Whoever designed this needs to be shot. I have had the phone for 5 hours and have spent the last 2 1/2 trying to get the f'in cover on. I give up. Getting a Diztronic case for it anyway. Had that on my GS2 and really liked it. This is totally absurd.
Just one corner won't go. It looks like it is OK until I snap in the TOP then the bottom left corner at the curve pops up.
GOT IT! That bottom left corner piece of **** tiny clip was bent up. I carefully bent it down and it went in.Unbelievable design. Steve Jobs would turn over in his grave.

Purpose of this thread
Just wanted to share my pics (at Bottom) and helpful tips for any first time doers to customizing...or have a place where you can ask questions some noobs might think are stupid but it's cool that what this is for
Obviously i'm not responsable for anything that YOU do TO YOUR phone ...just a disclaimer just incase...obviously this is not rocket science but better safe ...and OBviously Not responsible for the Sellers on ebay...and what they do. Your actions are your own...thanks now that's clear ...we move on.
Ok so i had a black t989d samsung galaxy S II from telus
I bought a white vinyl decal and a white battery door of ebay.
Ebay links of the ones i bought (links may expire over time)
White Door : http://www.ebay.ca/itm/OEM-BATTERY-...785829?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item35b9c24ee5
White vinyl decal (basically like a sticker but it will not leave marks or glue on you screen so it's safe)
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/White-Vinyl-...495791?pt=PDA_Accessories&hash=item19cd79d3ef
Tips :to applying the vinly on the front
i would recommend buying 2 vinyls just to be safe or mess up sticking it properly...the stickness is best the first time/ second time
Clean your phone first -microfibre clothes are best...like those tiny cloth sheets that comes with sunglasses
I say second time only if you didn't press down firmly on it to make it stick if you just gentle drop on using mainly the weight of the sticker itself it cool to remove it and re-adjust 2 maybe 3 times
Obviously remove the holes for the camera and hearing speaker
Use the bezel, the silver frame that goes around the sides of your phone to guide yourself to being straight
APPLYING:
The way i apply it is holding the top Thick / fat part (front facing camera ) on edges (so it doesn't stick to my fingers) with first finger and thumb rougly around the centre same thing with the bottom part with the 4 android buttons (both hands being above the sticky part not below)
then use my middle fingers to push the lines along the frame to make them come straight....more importantly trying to line up the bottom so the lights light up the drawings on the stick for the 4 button it won't come perfect which is ok but the light should be really close to it if you line up the bottom with the silver frame
Note for the camera part there's an outline sticker that goes around the camera piece as well ...for that remove the battery door is makes it easier
What my black phone looks like after:
Front and back image - Pic 1 and 2
Battery door / camera piece can be seen- Pic 3
LED light 4 buttons - Pic 4
DON't forget to HIT the THANKS button (thumbs up) if you found this helpful

Umm sure but the screen protector should ideally, either cover the entire front including the top, like around the front camera etc...or be the same size or smaller then the rectangle that fits inside the frame of the white vinyl ...only because it will have a weird little raised outline underneath of the protector...if you don't mind that then yeah should be fine...hopefully that makes sense what i said and it's not confusing LOL (PS unfortuantely it doesn't come a protector for the screen)
an alternative...just an opinion ... would be you could get another screen protector (i know a lil more costly) then remove the old one...place the white vinyl on the phone take the new protector (without pealing the back thingy that protectors the stickness) place on top of the phone trace with a marker (on the side that peals away of course)cut the outline with an exacto (X-acto) knife *after tracing, take it of the phone to use the exacto lol just saying to be safe...never know people may try exacto on top of their phone LOL *
Hope that helps...feel free to ask any other questions

yeahh that is a bit tricky but if you look closely i'm not exactly on the light i'm slightly off ...it's nearly impossible to get it dead on 100% but if the light falls under to light up the printed button it should be good enough....i actually mainly focused on the framing the whole as straight as possible using the bezel (silver frame of the phone) as the guide...the button should line up roughly 95% if you get it straight frame on frame... if it helps my top corners both left and right have a lil black space showing (around the curves) you can't even see it really....it cuz i focused on making sure my front camera and senors were not covered and then lined everything up downwards.....hopefully this makes some sense...LOL

Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium
This doesn't pertain to how well they hold up but I did have one on my phone for maybe a month or more then I decided I was tired of the white lol.now I'm thinking I may get another just to get a different look again lol.
So I'm not sure how these happened but I've been noticing some (what looks like) cracks in my screen. The odd thing is I've never dropped this one (as of yet) and the cracks are only visible when I'm in a dark place and the color over the "Cracks" are black or dark grey. Does anyone have any idea what these are or how they got there? I would take a picture but they really are not visible except in the dark. The most common time I see them is when I get the loading screen for netflix. They seem to be all around the edges with one or two small ones towards the center.
Thank you in advance for any insight into these I just want to figure out this mystery.
Also I'm wondering if this could be a defect of some nature and if so I will take it back to AT&T but I only have another month to figure this out.
Nobody at all not even a suggestion/theory?

the thing you are missing here is... that area is not wasted screen space. it was never screen space, it isnt the screen down there. Yes it is black and looks like the screen but the screen ends right below the on screen buttons, above the HTC logo. If they painted it silver would that make you happy? You've posted 20 times about how mad you are and that this phone is a disaster etc... Why? it is by no means a disaster and your mis understanding of the display is causing you grief. You can't completely remove them, the reasons are obvious but you could hide them while you're not using them... This will probably be implemented in some ROMs
Nugzo, that's nice of you to try and stick up for HTC. How come on the beautiful HTC one there is not bezel on the bottom? The truth is you don't know why so don't try and defend. FYI... IT IS completely wasted valuable screen real estate
There are very simply edits to framework-res that can change the navbar height. Stock height is 48dpi. 42 dpi on most devices is about as short as you want to go and have them still function. Set it to zero to remove it for that matter. Just make sure you have some other way to control your device. I know there are apps to give you that control.
Of course this will require root at the very least.

For me it's disappointing that they kept the logo at the bottom. If they were going to go with on screen buttons and all that's great but they should have removed that part.
Perhaps as development takes off one of the items that can be done is to remove the dock and shift the buttons down. I don't use the dock much and could live without it.
I am waiting a bit to buy mine just to see where the developer community takes this device. I am sure I am a buyer in a month or two but just not impressed enough to run out and buy day 1, week 1, month 1.

Who cares about the buttons. I'm sure they had a good reason, maybe space limitations, maybe they got on the band wagon, I don't know but...
We finally have a Micro SDXC slot. So go buy an S4 or better yet wait for the S5 which is going to be great according to all their marketing hype.

The space wasn't put there for capacitive buttons, it was put there because there is hardware sitting there inside the phone. Due to the hardware that's there, they weren't able to put a capacitive strip there, which is why the buttons have been moved to on-screen buttons. Of course, if you really wanted the capacitive buttons, they could've given you that, but then increased the bezel size and therefore, the entire phone.
I initially didn't like the setup either, but I've gotten over it and it hasn't hindered my enjoyment of the phone in any way.

Its not fake dude lol. there is a schematic of the phone in another thread, the digitizer is where the black HTC strip and logo is. In order to change that design, they would have to lose the front facing speakers. and again it is not wasted screen real estate, it isnt a screen. it is used for the digitizer. In order for it to be wasted screen real estate, it would have to be part of the screen, It is not. maybe you can consider it wasted front panel real estate, but not screen, because it isnt the screen there.

I think this is what he, and several others, are upset about. The M8 has a lower screen-to-surface area ratio than something like the LG G2. I'm sure the area under the logo bar is being used for electronics, but would've been nice to see this area reduced because it is not functional space for the user like the screen or speakers. The M7 made use of this space by incorporating capacitive buttons to leave the screen more free.
On the other side of things, I still don't l don't like giving up any real estate on my screen. However, there's a relatively easy fix that I use on my Nexus 7: GMD Auto Hide Soft Keys. It makes the screen completely clear of the soft keys during normal use, but you just need to swipe up from the bottom to get them back in any app. You can even customize the area that you swipe up from (position, size, etc...).
