I come from HD2 land to ask if there is some insurmountable obstacle keeping the Slide from running Ubuntu, or if it's just not been tried because of the smaller screen and slower processor/less RAM. If it is because of the latter, a stripped down Debian distro should run ok via VNC right? Just asking before I start getting into trying to get my gf's slide to run a lightweight 'nix build.
My HD2's busted and I'm bored lol
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide
Yeah the processor is slower (but it's hvga not wvga) and the screen is smaller (that's a bigger problem I guess) but it's got 512mb of RAM same as HD2 and a hardware keyboard, which is a big advantage I think. But the main reason is that we don't have many developers because Mytouch 3gs isn't very popular, it's a unique device sold only by T-mobile USA (I personally like it to be quite rare device).
I've been looking for Ubuntu for my Slide for some time and it would be awesome to have a dual boot Android CM7 and some ripped Ubuntu (Debian) just like HD2.
I'm gonna start work on it pretty soon. If I get it working good enough that I think it'd be worth it to anyone else to try it out, I'll upload it to MU or RS and link to it here. It'll be awhile though.
Edit: gonna be a bit longer guys, my computer's down, but I do know how I'm gonna do it, and haven't forgotten about this project. Just waiting for my new pcu. Sorry for the delay :-(
Sent from my T-Mobile myTouch 3G Slide
I'm looking forward to it, I hope you will do fine.
Cool. I'm interested in this. Could be pretty neat to try out.
Are you still on the project? Maybe you need some help?
Haven't been able to get started on it yet, but the method I am planning on using can be found at androlinux dot com, I have just had a ton of crap going on and haven't had time to get my computer fixed yet. When things settle down for me, this will be the first thing I start on, but unfortunately I have stuff in life that is taking 110% of my attention right now. Sorry for the long delay guys, a couple months ago I had all the time in the world to work on stuff, but it always seems as soon as you commit to doing something, other stuff springs up from outta nowhere to get in the way.

Hey, guys. Been reading the "Excalibur" forum for quite awhile now. Really great stuff. Thanks!
So... I have some moula to get a phone, and I'm kicking my options around. My Dash, while currently fine with the Ookba WM6.5 ROM, is feeling pretty long in the tooth. Probably a good time to kick this over to my wife and get myself something new. But what to get? I'm sticking with T-Mobile, so no question there.
Here are my thoughts...
- T-Mobile MyTouch 3G and extend my contract an additional two years
- HTC Fuze (used) and load the latest XDA rom
- HTC Diamond (used) and load the latest XDA rom
- something else???
Not sure if I'm really stoked on the Android world, but the Hero-based ROMs coming outta XDA look pretty sweet. Upcoming Exchange support is a must as well. Otherwise, are the Fuze and Diamond phones as sweet as they look? Any other suggestions??
Thanks,
Yip
Why not the Touch Pro2 with all it's 3G goodness when it comes out in August?
since you said tmobile, my choice would be the G1 with the keyboard.

I agree 100%.
The HTC Touch Pro2 is set to be released by T-Mobile on August 12th in the US.
This is going to be one bad-ass phone. Of course, it will (I believe) come with WM6.1 stock, from the factory.

I've thought about that, of course, and the Touch Pro 2 is *amazing*, but I'm guessing it'll be about $399 on contract, or so, which is out of my range. I'm hoping to spend about $200.
Anyone here have the Fuze or Diamond? Are those phones pretty great?

Just hop over to Fuze section look @ the ROMs etc
Same goes for anything in your price bracket give you an idea of what can be acomplished
TP2 would defo be my choice
Mine too: TP2
But long live to Excalibur!!
I appreciate your input, guys. I both *love* and *loathe* trying to figure stuff like this out...
So, it looks like about $220 is really my limit, unfortunately, which probably leaves me either choosing a myTouch 3G or a (used) Fuze. Do warranties carry over with used phones?
It'd be easier to decide on the myTouch phone if T-Mobile would come clean on the *actual* Exchange Support they'll offer, but they're being unnecessarily coy on the topic. Also, I really wish that myTouch came with the higher (288megs) of RAM, but it doesn't appear to I would love to get a copy of the SenseUI running on that sucker!
Anyhow.... myTouch 3G vs. Fuze. Thoughts? Pros/cons??
it was mentioned once before, why not the dash 3g?
my thoughts are to stick with a WM phone, i strayed a little and did not like it

The Dash 3G is ok, but I'm a bit miffed at the *lack* of real upgrade as compared to the original Dash! Same screen size/resolution, low-rez camera w/ no flash, and no touchable screen. It's faster, of course, and with 3G speeds, but otherwise a pretty minimal update. Also, T-Mobile has priced the phone TOO high. It should be $99 at most, but they're asking $169 w/ two year contract.
Not well done, in my opinion.
So... I finally had some "hands on" time with both the Fuze and the myTouch 3G. There is a LOT to be said for actually having/using the device in your hands, ya know?
FUZE
I'm hoping that the stock ROM is well-known to be really poor on this phone, because it was embarassingly bad to use. It was extremely sluggish (even after a reboot) and I had a lot of miss hits while trying to choose or open things. Do the WM6.5 ROMs for the Fuze improve upon the usability a lot? I would certainly hope so. In-store, the Fuze was a big disappointment.
myTouch 3G
Our local T-Mobile shop had one of these to check out. Actually, it was an employees personal phone that he let me look at (which was slightly awkward, but whatever). I've had quite a bit of time with the G1, and the myTouch was significantly smaller and more comfortable in my hand. The on-screen keyboard takes getting used to, but overall the phone seemed responsive and attractive. A nice device!
So... I'm still torn, but leaning toward the myTouch

Yeah me too, but the wife says I have to many phones already. LOL
Guess I have some sucking up to do.
I gotta have a keyboard. If the phone starts lagging, typing on the screen lags too, it really sucks. $99 is not a bad price for the phone, I'm sure alot of people would jump on that.

Does yor G1 lag then? Just wondering as with the CPU speed we have in devices should be no lag, never use Hardware Keyboard on Kaiser as the expresion "Hard to Use & Hard to Find" pops into mind, but then never have any lag
the g1 does lag if im using too many programs (like pandora+messaging+opera mini) I usually run together. Like the Dash you can keep typing on the keyboard and the phone will catch up, with the onscreen touch keyboard when you type when and phone lags the buttons wont respond until the cpu catches up, you either gotta type slower or go back and fix all the errors. This happens also with the mytouch, im sure when better faster ROMS come out itmay not be such a problem.

To fix that gain root access of your phone and download Advanced Task Killer (Free) it lets you kill any apps running quickly and frees up ram quickly
yea its rooted, latest cyanogen stable rom, parted sd card for the apps2sd, i use task manager, i acually got a few task killer apps. i should overclock it but i can deal with a little lag to save battery. its all modded out like my dash is haha.
Does anyone know if this applies to upgrading/renewing for 2 years as well? I'm out of contract now and up for the $199 Mytouch upgrade. It would be pretty nice to get this $100 cheaper.
according to what i read online it applies to qualifying upgrades and new service.
Im gonna wait and see what the moto cliq is gonna be like. I know my next phone is definantly going to be Android unless the T-Mo TP2 price comes down. Yes folks flipped from WM.

I'm waiting to see the Cliq and the price as well. Rumor has it that it is going to be a major push from Motorola and T-Mobile and may even be FREE with a 2-year contract. If they do that, or even make it $50 or so, it is definitely going to be my next phone.

Its was a good flip for me I've been a Linux and Mac user my whole life so getting root access and being a mod an Android device is a whole lot more comfortable for me
ubuntu rox, I just wish I could run my favorite programs on it.
i was just thinking although the cliq looks like a badass looks and tech wise, i realised it wont get much xda support being a motorola. who knows if it will be rootable and be able to put cooked roms on it (if i cant run cyanogen with apps2sd it might be a no go for me). i dont want to be stuck using a standard t-mo rom on it. phones like moto q9h and the jack would be alot better if cooked roms, hacks and mods were availible (just the usual registry mods was all i could find) but little tech support makes them a dud IMO.
btw the pre order date is said to be oct. 19th no price yet. im still debating on the mytouch promo or just wait on the moto clit, but i dont wanna cough up 200 on the touch since the promo is ending soon (23rd or the 24th i think) decisions decisions.

yea your absolutely right about moto phones, i got the q9h with WM 6.1 thinking it would have been an upgrade from my dash since the tech specs said so, it was slower and froze up alot and just pissed me off all the time. i went back to the dash after about two weeks. my gf had the sk slide,it was a nice looking phone but i wasnt too impressed with it.
watch its probly gonna be all hype and end up discontinued in 6 months after the release.

i dont want to discourage you but i've had a g1 sitting in the box and just got mytouch. they run the exact same software. everything in the dream forums works well. tons of stable roms tons of free apps. battery life is fail but no more than the dash prior mods. 16-20 hours. i had to go to a store and play with it a while to make up my mind. if you dont like it and still want the moto cliq go for it
i agree about motorolas, they are pieces of ****. even the razor, it was only cool because of its size. the cliq is probably aimed for the "Hannah Montana" crowd. its tmobile's way of replacing the sidekick

Very,VERY true. couldn't have said that better. Unless the phones proccessor is a snapdragon, we get no love. Hell even the Vibrant isn't getting much love and that proccessor is supposedly faster than the snapdragon anyways. I just dont get whats the big deal with the whole 1GHZ snapdragon fetish everyone is on.. They act like the phone will constantly be on 1GHZ 24/7 and that its THAT much faster than a phone going at 800 mhz.. The only phone that im actually gonna consider a huge upgrade is that Mytouch HD coming soon. apparently it has +700 mbs or Ram and thats what makes it superior to me. Not the name of its processor.

Correction; the name of it is officially the myTouch 4g. Idk if you've seen the youtube videos, but the phones software is almost an exact copy of our software and the phone looks almost exactly like ours. Yes the phone does have the faster processor, better ram, front facing cam etc. but I would still hold off on that phone till the Nexus 2 comes out or an official Gingerbread running phone comes out. The myTouch 4g is the top of the line right now, but that's just right now. You should hold out a bit. Wait for something ground breaking. Why get a phone that's basically the same as what you already have minus the keyboard? Watch the youtube reviews on it and see if you still want to drop the slide for it. After watching the video I thought hell no cause its almost the same phone except processor, bigger screen, front cam and gorilla glass. Check the video out if you haven't and let me know if you think its still worth it. I think its worth it if your leaving from a phone without Espresso sense and you want to try out the new UI. Our phone is still pretty fast despite the 600mhz processor and we can root the phone and get 200 more out of it. Plus video calls aren't even standard yet so most of us don't even have any friends or family to do video calls with.

Yeah i looked at that. Not really a correction since i knew that before reading, But ok You seem to be kinda saying what ive been trying to saying but i see your point in it. I know about the 4G and i think its nice but i don't wanna upgrade to it. Was just saying it was an "upgrade" of the phones we have available now if i was to switch devices IE Nexus vibrant etc. What i was trying to say was that we don't really have much dev support because of our "low-end" specs but i dont really find them so low end compared to other devices other than the processor speed. Im very happy with My slide and more than likely wont upgrade until an Android 3.0 stock device comes out. hopefully its not like the G2

I wasn't Complaining. Hell hes pretty much the only Dev we have (No disrespect to other devs working on our device) but that limits us to just stock android. He wont ever do anything other than stock so other roms that come to surface wont ever really be ported and thats my concern. And what do you mean when we get "full" root?

The software on this phone is incredibly stable, so I wouldn't be surprised to find out this is true. I just rooted my phone two days ago and I've flashed 4 Roms and I've had not one of the problems my friends have had with their Verizon phones (especially the Droid-series phones). I'm keeping stock CM til I find one I really like.
As to the whole lack of devs thing, when I *finally* found the ROM bible (I wanted to find a good set of Roms before rooting), I was actually quite impressed at how many we have. Between 2.1 Expresso and the Froyo goodness we've got nearly 2 dozen Roms to choose from, which is way more than I expected from a not-so-popular-because-we-don't-have-buzzwords-like-snapdragon phone like ours. Plus, there's some themed 2.2 Roms posted in the dev section not in the Rom bible yet. Since our phone has only been out for a few months, we're average more than 1 new Rom a week. I can live with that.

I wouldn't know because I'm still running a stock unrooted rom. This phone is not easy to root and I own a Mac which makes rooting even harder.
I guess HTC and google made sure that the software was well developed to prevent bricking. It is in a company's best interest to do so. They must of caught on to people who have rooted phones in the past and have bricked them then switched back to stock to make it look like it was a software issue so they don't void warranty. Company's lose money because of things like that. I guess that's why the G2 still haven't been able to get permanent root.

The MT4G is a POS and I've had PLENTY of experience with it. Here's what I said in another similar thread...
All I can tell you is that I went through five MyTouch4Gs to realize that there are numerous issues with them. I encountered creaking/squeaking buttons and a washed-out display, others have experienced cracked bezels, dust under the display, FFC not centered and more. I really, really wanted to enjoy that phone, but after going through five of them I gave up on it, and went with the G2. Best decision I've made on a phone. Never did I think I would need or use the physical keyboard, but now that I've had it for a few weeks I now use it all the time. It's a wonderful keyboard, and I have no regrets going from the MT4G to the G2.
My advice to you would be to do some homework in the MT4G sections of XDA, to see what others have to say about it. Lots of problems for many, not all, and the one other thing that sucked about that phone is the lack of ROM development. It finally started picking up steam when I got my G2, but it's still nothing compared to the ROM development being done on a daily basis for the G2.
My wife has a MyTouch 4G.
The Sense is really aggravating, even after I've installed ADW and rooted so I could remove as much of the bloatware as I could it's still bloated an heavy. If it were my phone I would be running a CM nightly on it but I don't want to run non-stable code on my wifes phone. She will be getting CM7 once it's final and stable.
The physical buttons work well enough.
It's a bit faster than G2 but not enough to make a difference in day to day use.
thanks im going to keep it

welp i have a pos hd2...1 1/2 years, billions of hours here flashing tweaking etc. even more time dealing with tmo...
7 years of loyal patronage, which was flawless, until i made the mistake of buying this trash.
ONLY RECENTLY did they offer warranty replacements, 3 returns later (all were trashed, broken, REALLY broken) refurbished trash.
tmo of course is no help...
until today.
not really.
the 'comparable' alternative is the mytouch slide 3g...stop laughing.

if you are, leave my thread now, i'm tired of your trolling...you know who you 'special jerk' xda members are.
buh bye.
question, wth do i do first?
i am not committed so i'm not ready to get crazy and void my account (if that's my only option, i'll fiddle with droid and return it).
what should i look out for?
i MIGHT keep it, but it's no replacement imho, and even with the current issues on my hd2 my contract is up in Feb 2012.
i do like winmo, but droid looks neat to me.
thank you in advance, seriously, this feels odd...
i would rather a sensation, but they want $400 w/contract...
did i mention my 7 years with tmo, and $300 w/ contract hd2? including ins. $30 data and warranty.
lets do this!
A mT3gS is a super ****ty excuse for a HD2 replacement. My best advice would be to keep returning the broken HD2's until you get one that works right. Then you can have WinMo, try out Android, experiment with WP7, use Ubuntu, all on one device, a device with hardware far superior to the slide. Don't get me wrong, the slide is a great phone, when rooted, s-off'ed, and running a CyanogenMod 7 rom, but it's just no HD2.

no doubt!
the slide worked 100% of the time, everytime, all of the time...i didn't know it could be like that.
perfectly flawless instantly.
droid market is nice for stuff, the games are good looking time killers, kills winmo market to hell of course.
small screen was an instant no go with low pix res etc. but looked clean enough.
both were red...ugh.
better than white?
not black like all slick electronix should be, imho.
brushed nickle is slick too.
sent 'em packing once i learned about 'force closing', the mega shiznit market, and how long live wallpapers remain novel (5 days for me).
read up on sd droid and my leo, put a 2.3 in it and spent 5 days wishing it was more stable thinking quietly "maybe less glass, and a newer 4g slide wouldn't be so bad..."
i think a lot of random crazy things to myself quietly, in truth, i am addicted to the larger screens.
angry birds rio looks killer on 4.3"!!
unfortunately the build blew to bits, and currently i am on good old 6.5 waiting until Feb. 9th 2012 to make my 4th contractual decision concerning my next phone.
with the speed at which phones are hitting various markets currently, 7 months away is a magical wonderland imho.
