Alright kids I'll try to make this a simple as possible those of you that are scratching your heads and wondering why you cant get S-on to say OFF..... on the newer MT4G with bootloader 0.86.0000 HERE WE GO.
Step 1:
Download Androzip,Terminal Emulator,Root Explorer and Superuser
Download - Visionary11(yes its an old build, but its simple and less confusing for you noobs.)
Once you have these apps put them on you MT4G homescreen page(doesnt matter in what order just as long as these apps are quickly accessible to you.)
Step 2:
Make sure you go into Settings on your MT4G.
now that you have selected Settings select Applications Make sure that Unknown sources has been selected
On the same Settings screen you will also see Fast boot Make aure to deselect it!
Once the Fast boot has been deselected, select the Development you be transfered to another screen the only items that should be selected is USB debugging. Once you have finished this go back to you home screen.
Step 3:
At this point you should be at the home screen with all the apps you downloaded in Step 1.
Now Select Visionary, once Visionary is open select Set system r/w after root.
Now press Root Now!. let Visionary temproot your MT4G(CAN TAKE UP TO 10-30 SECONDS BE PATIENT!)
Ok that part is Done. go back to your home screen.
Step 4:
Select Terminal and type - su you should see "Terminal Emulator has been granted superuser permission", it will be a real quick pop up saying this. Ok you are now temp rooted. go ahead and select the hardkey arrow and press it until you get to the home screen.
Step 5:
With theMT4G's internet browser find the gfree file on the TRUE PermaRoot and the ULTIMATE S=Off!!! forum
Open the gfree file with Androzip, that you download onto your MT4G NOT with what your computers
unzips this file with!
Step 6:
Once you have Unziped the gfree file from your phone into your phone, you will need to locate and transfer everything that is in the gfree folder DO NOT TRANSFER THE FOLDER ITSELF WITH THE CONTENTS IN IT. Just open the gfree folder and transfer everything inside there. Time to locate where Androzip placed the gfree file
Open Root Explorer scroll down until you see the sdcard file, ok open it!
Scroll down until you see the AndroZip file open it! WALA.... I present to you the extracted gfree scripts. Now that your looking at them, I need you to select the Menu Hardkey Button which is next to your home Hardkey Button. Once you've pressed the Menu hardkey it will options will pop up on your MT4G screen, select Multi-select now select everything inside of the gfree folder.( youll notice the green checks when selecting ) you will also see another option of commands, select move
Now with move selected, navigate those files with the arrow hardkey on your MT4G to /data/local and paste them in that location. Done with that process! close your Root Explorer and return to your home screen.
Step 7:
Open Terminal Emulator and type the following:
type "su", and hit enter
type "cd /data/local" and hit enter.
type "chmod 777 gfree" and hit enter to make the program executable.
type "./gfree -f" and hit enter.
Wait for the program to finish and then reboot into HBoot you'll see that S=Off. Also, check your bootloader version. If it says s=off and has bootloader version 0.86.0000 it worked!
You will need to run visionary11 again (w/set system r/w after root checked and then press Root Now!) to make root privileges permanent and then reboot again. Now "su" should work properly for you.
This will work 100 percent if you read these instruction very carefully and follow these steps exactly!
Thats the same instructions from the gfree thread.
How is this different?
if this is the same then why the hell are people not getting it?! im seeing a lot of people regarding that the newer MT4G with bootloader .86 is extremely hard or damn near impossibly to S-off if this doesnt explain how to do it in lamens term then these people are true NOOBS and should stick with their STORM 2 stick with the basics and not with the FAKE Sh**t!. just trying to help
mine had bootloader 86 and it rooted just fine. People just need to follow the directions better.

I have the engineering bootloader? I don't know how that's possible since I never changed it. I just rooted and installed CWM.

You have the eng bootloader. Your better off with it.
Yes, ALL the MT4Gs (at least all the ones I've seen) come with the 0.86.0000 bootloader. There shouldn't be any reason for this preventing you from rooting. The 0.85.2007 is the engineering bootloader. You get this either by manually flashing it (as per the instructions in grankin's true permroot thread) or if you used the root.sh script (such as those of us who followed theunlockr.com's walkthrough).
If you aren't succeeding with the gfree method, either you aren't following instructions properly or something else is interfering. My friend couldn't get VISIONary to temproot, but after uninstalling one of his file explorer apps, all of a sudden VISIONary worked.
Same here. Got mine the 11th of this month and rooted first try no problem.

The method I used did include running the root.sh script, so that must be how I got the engineering bootloader. Thanks for the info.

That is correct... The root.sh includes the engineering bootloader within it and it is the better of the 2. I suggest installing it and you will not have any more problems.
SWEET! Thanks! I missed the other 50 threads with these directions!
Just a tip for people having problems rooting using the gfree method. Follow the instructions to the "T" and it works. As for the commands for terminal emulator...copy and paste them to a word document so you can be sure where there are spaces, and make sure that your 0's are not O's and so forth...Don't be afraid to ask for help, there are alot of nice people on this forum that will help you out.
thnx
thanks alot for this, idk why people on xda don't know how to speak in laymans terms, i guess it's to drive the noobies away, i've been around here since cyanogen had 3.0 on the G1, and i shyed away from using the gfree method on my buddies phone since it looked complicated (didn't want to do alot of reading and work) and i was just wanting to do it fast.
this thread simplified things for me so i can know what i'm doing, also i didn't want to download root explorere (dont' wanna pay $4) so i just pushed every file manualy using adb.

ES Filer explorer does what root explorer does as well, but it's free.
The purpose of this guide is to walk you through the process of rooting your phone running 2.3.3 ONLY! I will do the best I can to make this as painless as possible and help you achieve your goals of S-Off.
***THIS THREAD IS ONLY FOR OBTAINING S-OFF, OBTAINING ROOT, AND INSTALLING CLOCKWORK MOD RECOVERY! ANY QUESTION REGARDING INSTALLING ROMS DO NOT BELONG HERE AND WILL NOT BE ANSWERED! ONLY ISSUES REGARDING ROOT WILL BE ANSWERED BY MYSELF OR OTHER MEMBERS.***
What you will need: (** = File is attached to OP)
Windows XP or higher (Thats all I have, someone else with MAC and/or Linux will need to assist and I can add it to the OP)
http://revolutionary.io/ .:UPDATE:. PRE4 now available
This site is where you will download the rooting tools and obtain a beta key. When you click on the download button for your OS, make sure you view the box that pops up requesting your OS version, phone model, HBoot version, and phone serial number. Without doing this you cannot root your phone so do it or you are screwed. There are two ways to get your phone serial number: 1) Remove the battery and look at the white sticker or 2) On your phone, go to Settings -> About Phone -> Phone Identity and under Device Serial Number you will see it. After you receive your code COPY AND PASTE it onto a word document or notepad because there are times when you will get confused with the font type from the Revolutionary site. Example, in my beta key, the lower case L looks exactly like the capital I and it threw me off. Also, the key IS case sensitive so keep that in mind.
If running windows, you will need these drivers:
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe
If running Linux, reports show that you do not need any drivers.
If running Mac OS, I currently do not know so someone please let me know and I will update.

http://dl.dropbox.com/u/33327355/cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img **
These two items are in case Revolutionary tool fails to install CWM on your phone OR if you want to do this offline at another location. Fastboot and abd tool is the software that will take the img file of CWM and flash it onto your phone after S-OFF is obtained.
Prepping your Phone:
Turn off FAST BOOT in the settings located: SETTINGS -> POWER
Turn on Unknown Sources: SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONS
Turn on USB Debugging: SETTINGS -> APPLICATIONTS -> DEVELOPMENT
Installing Root:
1 - First, install the HTC drivers on your computer. It is a very simple step and you should have no issues doing this at all. Also look at your installed programs list and confirm HTC Sync is not installed. This will stop your device from being detected by Revolutionary to other problems when rooting.
2 - Extract the Fastboot and ABD zip file onto the root of your local disk drive (ex. C:\android-win-tools )
3 - Copy/Cut and Paste the CWM img file into the Fastboot and ABD folder (ex. C:\android-win-tools\cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img) Doing this will prep your PC to flash CWM in the event the Revolutionary tool does not download and install it.
4 - Place phone in "Disk Drive" mode then Copy/Cut and Paste the root su zip file (do not extract it) onto the root of your SDCard on your phone (ex. x:\su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip )
5 - Place phone in "Charge Only" mode. A lot ot people run into issues and not realize this was not selected.
6 - Run the Revolutionary file now that everything is set to go.
7 - You will get a prompt to enter your beta code. This is the code you received when you downloaded the revolutionary file and entered the information to obtain the beta key.
8 - Sit back and WAIT while the application does what is needed. This process will take anywhere from 3 to 5minutes so be PATIENT.
9 - Upon completion, you will get a prompt to install CWM. Say yes here! Once done skip to step 10.
9a - If the revolutionary app crashes or fails to download/install, leave your phone in the state it is (HBoot mode and should say "Fastboot USB". Open a command prompt in windows (Start - Run - type CMD).
9b - If you did exactly as told, type "CD.." until you see "C:\"
9c - Type the following:
CD android-win-tools
fastboot flash recovery cwm-4.0.1.4-vivow.img
9d - This process takes about 30sec max. Almost done!!!
10 - On your phone, back track to the main menu of HBoot using the volume keys and Power button and select recovery (2nd Option). In a few seconds your will be in CWM.
11 - As long as you copied the signed zip file to the root of your sdcard, perform the following:
"Install Zip From SDCard" (5th Option)
"Choose Zip From SDCard" (2nd Option)
Select the root/su zip file (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
Choose Yes and wait.
Back track to main menu and reboot
12 - Give yourself a pat on the back for paying attention and have a cookie!
I am typing this on my tablet/phone/pc so if an error exists, please let me know right away and I will update the OP. Again, questions here are ONLY for rooting. Anything else...kick yourself in the head, do a real search, and post if needed.

NICE, this thread should be sticky.
On a side note, make sure you have your phone connected to wifi or 3G if you want the revolutionary tool to download and install the CWM automatically. If not then you would have to flash the CWM manually per the instruction from OP.

Mmk. I downloaded ROM Manager but everytime i start it up it says "You must root your phone for ROM Manager to function. Superuser was not found at "/system/bin/su/" or "system/xbin/su"
I have the file on the root of the sdcard and im pretty sure i rooted it with revolutionary and installed CWM as well.
Ok... Dumb question... where do we find the fastboot and adb zips to install on the C drive??
I have gotten thru step 8 and failed whentrying to install CWM. I manually installed it with step 9 and it said finished. Step 10 says to select recovery but it is not listed. I rebooted to see if that would work but it didnt. Where did I go wrong?
EDIT: Actually it did work just was trying to hard. Thanks for the great instructions.
@ Darkpsycho0
try installing busybox from the market and give it a try again.
@PacerguyDon
The links are in the OP.
It's next to the one that has the img file as well. There is only one zip file and it contains both items in it.
@Flightmed
Power down, and get back into HBoot. You will see the following options:
Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Simlock
Hboot Usb
Image CRC
The second option (Recovery) is what you want.
EDIT: Glad you got it working!!!

Thinking about it and looking back...I didn't complete the instructions on applying root. I apologize to you and everyone else.
When you have CWM installed, open it up through recovery. Next, as long as you copied the signed zip file to the root of your sdcard, select "Install Zip From SDCard" (5th Option).
Select "Choose Zip from SDCard" (2nd Option)
Select the zip file (su-2.3.6.3-efgh-signed.zip)
Choose Yes and wait. Once done, reboot and you should be good!
Again, I apologize. I will update main post asap!

Directions:
First we are going to install the Htc Usb Driver that was downloaded. Just double click and continue with the install.
Next do a backup the sd-card. This means anything you have on it to copy and paste somewhere on the pc. The reason for this is the sd card will be wiped for the process.
Now take and extract the Simple Gold Card Creator to the desktop. Inside should be a .exe file, if windows vista or 7 you will need to right click and open as admin.
Plug the phone into the usb cable connected to your pc. Enable usb storage.
In Simple Gold Card select the drive letter in step 1. Then click format, once format is done pull down the taskbar. Switch from usb storage to charge only.
Plug the phone in to the usb cable connected to your pc. Go to settings>applications>development enable usb debugging. Also at this time you should get a prompt on the taskbar (Windows) about installing drivers. Make sure it finishes before going forward.
Now inside of the Simple Gold Card Creator select MMC1 & click GetCID and copy it into the web page that the program links to in step 4. Make sure to use a real email as it will email a img to you.
Download the image file from your e-mail, the click load img in Simple Gold Card. Browse to where ever it saved and open it.
Now on the phone pull the taskbar down yet again and switch from charge only to usb storage. In Simple Gold Card make sure the drive letter didn't change. Then click patch mmc.
You should now have a working gold card! YA!.... Now pull the taskbar down again and switch to charge only mode.
Extract the contents of Wilfire-S_One Click.zip to the desktop. Inside of the new folder you should have a tools folder and a s-off.bat.
Double click the s-off.bat which will open a cmd window. Be sure to pay attention to what it is doing and hit any key when prompted. Caution make sure to wait till the phone is booted back up after booting to h-boot for the first time. As said read what is said in the prompt.
When all done you will be s-off, have root/superuser, cwm and busybox installed. Which I would recommend to do a backup.
Now enjoy life with your s-off'd wildfire
Warning do not fill the thread with does not work. Please post the output of the script. You can put it in the post or copy and paste it on pastebin.org. Followed by putting the link to it in the post. If you decide not to follow the above directions, your post will be ignored.

Does this install alquez unofficial cwm or some other [official] cwm? (Didn't see unofficial) Next, if you have developed an official cwm might we expect rom manager support (on the rom side) sometine in the near future? Love koush's work.

Due to kernel differences between cdma an gsm. I highly recommend not to use gsm clockworkmod's. Which is why it is my own clockworkmod built from simmon's buddy's aosp kernel. So not official but is no one else's cwm if that is what you were getting at.
Also I am not sure on the other cwm's for gsm but soft keys work in this one according to simmon. I don't have the device so I can't confirm it besides what you guys do. As for the rom manager support I can try to get koush to add it.
This is probably just for CDMA version of Wildfire S....right?
My daughter got GSM version and I've to s'off'd & root it
i passed all of the steps with no problem until step 12 . my problem in step 12 is when my phone restart and goes to H-BOOT it shows me This message :

whats wrong ?
my rom is 2.3.3 Asia ( Arabic ) H-BOOT 1.03.0000
I really do not want to be rude. How ever did either of you two read the title? It says cdma in it only, where if you have arabic I am guessing you are also gsm.
If you boot to the bootloader and it says marvel. It will not work sorry say. Marvel is gsm, MarvelC is cdma then the other one I am not sure what it is.
I wish the recovery was thrown in a hboot flashable PG76IMG.zip's. I am phone-side 90% of the time [or lazy] I will try the recovery.img out though. Thanks.

Well after doing a tutorial pretty easy to understand for the Htc evo 3d, and after my one x rootear achieved, we will develop a very easy to understand tutorial with the necessary files to do so. I guess after the working day I'll get to work. I just ask a little patience. Embrace them all and continue to help in this glorious community.
Well what is debt prmetido so here I leave as rootear in simple steps your one x.
We have installed HTC sync.
For starters you have to make the release of the bootloader:
: Using HTCDev (http://htcdev.com/) on that page choose unlock boot loader, then we choose the device and select the last option (other). Then everything is simple and we will guide you to secure the release of bootloader. So far we have done the most complex, remember that throughout this process have made the folder called Android you should follow the path of the disk c, I've put in program files (this folder with the corresponding three files and the compressed my deputy in this tutorial under the name android).
: Open the folder repeat android that must be placed on disk c running as a result: computer / c / android. In this folder at this time put a file named: "r1-MoDaCo-recovery-clockwork-touch-endeavoru" (I'll attach the end so they can download as zip but must extract the file and put in the folder, repeat do not put the android zip but its content.)
: Now we should just turn off the phone and while the volume is kept down, enter it and click on bootloader on fastboot, which must be red, USB cable now connect our next one x fastboot also should appear in red USB. Open the system and put CMD cd \ android, android will thus \ after the bar we must copy the following "fastboot flash recovery-MoDaCo r1-recovery-clockwork-touch-endeavoru.img" without quotes and we enter. Our phone already has the recovery but now we must make the root
STEP 4: Within one x sd of our going to put a file attached to them also and that we should run from the recovery and is called "CWN-SuperSU-v0.87". Then turn off the switch on again the phone down with volume and power, the option selected this recovery and power to enter recovery and drive to install zip from sd card, power and will give you another option choose sd card and power. Here you see a series of folders must remember that we have the arhivo in question, remember? good as you remember them "CWN-SuperSU-v0.87", I have created a folder called android rom and then put all the files that run for recovery, only a recommendation, we must select the file and run it through Power. Once installed we have concluded and we have our terminal ROOTEADO AND RECOVERY.
A big thanks to the people of MoDaCo (http://android.modaco.com/topic/3530...tock-download/), I have simply tried to get a simple explanation and understandable even for a beginner like me!
Enjoy it, I've tried the roms Leedroid and revolution and everything is perfect, I am left with the revolution of performance.
Hug to everyone and ask them to stop criticism and doubts to polish them.

I think you beleive that biggest text size can also help somebody
I don't think it's a good idea to attach Paul's recovery here because he's getting good traffic from XDA from Root and Recovery thread but if you attach it I think it will drop.
Also this recovery is now obsolete...
OK, but?
You could tell me an easier way. I tried Tadas roms and have not had any problems. I'd love to detail an easy and effective way. Thank you!
There are already a couple of tutorials on doing this in this form.

10)Using the previously downloaded Froyo PC36IMG.zip from the OP, rename to "PC36IMG.zip", and place on root of SD Card. Reboot into Bootloader, and follow the prompts to update device (Notice in the below picture that the watermark shows as "LOCKED" again).
The file (PC36IMG.zip) worked perfect on the first phone but on the second it is not able to recognize the PC36IMG.zip. Kindly help me with this as the rooting process is incomplete.
Awaiting reply. Thanks in advance...
1st problem, you need to Mount your system as writable.
2nd problem, is the phone S-OFF?

@ 1st problem How do we mount the phone system to be writable?? If there is any steps to be followed:
@2nd problem the phone is not S-OFF.. it says S-ON. Usually after the PC36IMG.zip is processed the Watermark ***Locked*** disappears along with the S-ON.

Download a file explorer such as es file manager and go into root settings and mount system as writable. And the phone won't read certain PC36IMG's without S-OFF.

You need to mount the system as writable like he said with a file explorer.
You do not need to be S-OFF to run a PC36IMG.zip file that is officially from HTC, as that root method does demonstrate, although it is much easier. Notice it did work on your first phone. That root method downgrades your operating system to an earlier version, because those are the only ones that you can S-OFF. The root method downgrades your misc partition to the original (Engineering) one, so that the phone will recognize all PC36IMG.zip files from HTC as being a later version than itself (so it thinks), and allow you to update (so it thinks) to a later version, but you're actually downgrading. The phone will not let you downgrade (while not rooted) unless it is S-OFF or tricked, which is the reason why it rejects the PC36IMG.zip file from HTC (It's trying to prevent you from downgrading). Obviously, something went wrong on the second phone during that rooting tutorial. Was the bootloader previously unlocked, and did the second phone have superuser permissions?
Also, depending on what you want to do with the phone (like writing to the system partition), you only need S-OFF if you plan on flashing radios, splash screens, or Hboots (which I especially don't recommend). Everything else, you could just unlock the bootloader and just follow the tutorial up until the point where you flash the superuser app (step 4). It gets kind of complicated trying to get it S-OFF as well. Some people have more difficulty that others.
Might be more helpful to post in that other thread if you have issues with that method . . . I'm just sayin' .
Also, your sdcard MUST be formatted to FAT32 for the bootloader to recognize any PC....zip files

Hi Everyone,
I have 2 HTC Evo 4g with 2 different problems:->
Problem on first phone:
I root the HTC Evo 4G using the method given by the link below:
http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...-18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-
Further i installed costum ROM and it worked good. I was wanting to edit the system folder and replace the camera apk but i see that the SYStem folder is not editable.
Is there any method to access and modify the system files.

You should donate one of your evos to the dev asking for an evo donor to work on 4G... His thread is forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2109646 there
