Hi!
No, it is not up to date but it works (but i would recommend the xda-wiki of course). We only maintain the XDA-wiki with the most current instructions.

It seems like the wiki one here has quite a bit more steps.
What is the eng hboot for? One wiki is against it (CM) and the wiki here recommends it.
EDIT - rooted, did not install or push hboot

Actually, I recommend using the CM wiki on rooting mostly because it stays away from Visionary; however, I recommend you flash the bootloader simply because it's another way to flash a backup in case you brick your phone and recovery's acting up.

Doesn't the wiki here use the gfree method?
I used the wiki from here to root my dz (same with the files needed i got from the links posted on the wiki).
now running CM7 and started from 1.82 stock with the latest OTA update
I must say that, when I just got my phone and had no clue how anything worked, I found the CM instructions a lot easier to follow and more understandable.
Now I can see through the XDA instructions, but as a complete noob they just confused me.

It used to, but then it went to using Visionary for temproot.
Using the visionary/gfree method works
Did not have a problem and followed everything it said. I did not flash the engineer (out of context) as I'm not sure that I will use a custom rom. The stock works fine for me

As of today they are the same. guldry (the maintainer of the cm wiki) synchronized the cyanogenmod wiki with the xda-wiki.

I just got a replacement for my old G2 and my new one has Gingerbread, would rooting be safe for it on stock Gingerbread?

I can't root. Unrevoked3 seems like a piece of ****. Just doesn't work at all, tried 3 machines and two operating systems with it and it just doesn't work at all. It says to go to hboot USB but it just boots into the OS rather than in to bootloader... I've tried it at least 28 times. So screw that--
So, how do I root without it?? The specs on the Evo:

Also tried OS X. No go.

download the combo pack for latest Radio, WiMAX, PRI & NV
PS. before you do the second step, find a rooted rom you fancy, download it and place it on the root of your sdcard. you will thank me later. i prefer deodexed stock roms...also, word to the wise, on the second step theres a file thats called "Rooting OTA Files.zip" that you will need to download and extract to the sdcard. When you do this it will create a folder on your sdcard with the 5 files in it. take the files out of the folder and copy them to the root of the sdcard and delete the empty folder. that is the only thing that this process didnt make perfectly clear. other than that everything works fine.
enjoy, and F*ck unrevoked! lol naw, im just kidding....but not really!

UPDATE: Upon the first reboot in to bootlader, it says cannot update version is older. Same issue
UPDATE 2: Success!! I wiped some redundant files on my SD card and it worked. I think I had another version of PC136,,, on there. Thanks so much. now I need to know how to permanently install a recovery mode image like Amon RA or clock work.

You have to flash Toast's mtd-eng to the misc partition, I think. They are working on a method in the thread for rooting the new boot loaderthat should work for you.
This was how I rooted so it can be done.

Would be nice if the unrevoked site said something about this in a clear and plain fashion...
Anyway, I got it all almost working!! Sheesh that took forever. Now. I flashed a recovery using the technique on geekfor.me, or so I thought, when I rebooted in to recovery the next time i needed it it was the image of the phone and a red exclamation point...

whats the issue your having? i saw your update and it said success but was that following my steps? if so, that shoudl have given you everything, all you need to is install rom manager from the market and flash a alternative recovery.
I have done S-OFF, PermRoot and currently overlocking on my unbranded European Desire Z, but I need to send it back to HTC to repair my phone with some hardware issue under warranty.
What do I need to do? I have seen some guides here but they are all for the T-Mobile G2, and am worried if I follow it it will brick my unbranded European Desire Z.
Just unroot and use an official image! Then everything should be fine.

It's only bad if you have S-OFF only via the eng hboot (not gfree), and if you are trying to downgrade your ROM.
If you have S-OFF via gfree then you're fine, just flash the stock ROM back on. Then undo gfree via its options to set S-ON (see the Wiki).
Unfortunately my phone used the S-Off and Root using the old 'hBoot' method I followed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=9143423&postcount=3
So what should I do?

What ROM are you running exactly ? If you are still on the stock ROM, and you flash the exact same version back, it will be ok.
I've made no mods prior to this. It was a brand new Desire Z so it was all stock.
Then I did the following:
Rooted and s-off via engineering hboot
Installed Visionary and applied Permroot
Installed ROM Manager for Clockworkmod
Flashed gtrab's godspeed 1.4ghz module via Clockworkmod
How should i go about this now?
Thanks.

You sure about that, Sherlock?
I'm not trying to hijack your thread so please know that but I want to make sure. I thought I could just use the unroot thread to unroot (thread here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=835971) should I need to but it seems as if I need to flash a rom now looking in this thread so just to make sure:
1) I rooted my phone via this : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=833965
2) I installed clockwordmod and made a backup.
That's it! I'm going to freeze some apps in a min using Titanium but not uninstall them.
SO... question is, should I need to send my G2 back, what unrooting steps should I take exactly? thanks!

It's a little scary at times, if you're not comfortable with ADB, use the Terminal Emulator on the phone.
Don't fear the HexEdit-ing
If ClockWorkMod won't let you into the Boot-loader when coming from a power OFF state, REBOOT into the Boot-loader (took my 5 tries before I slapped my forehead )
And (since I had all apps on auto-update??) the phone synced/reloaded ALL of my apps

I'd like to expand on returning to just a stock ROM.
It looks like someone recently updated the wiki page for the Vision as I see new gfree instructions to restore S-ON and CID lock. However, if I wanted to just return to a stock ROM, and am currently using Clockwork Rcovery 3.x, are the following steps correct:
1. Flash Clockwork Recovery 2.5.1.x
2. Download the stock ROM linked from the qiki (the one you rename to PC10IMG) and place it on the SD root.
3. Reboot into HBOOT and let it update from the PC10IMG.zip file
I imagine just following those three steps would put me back to a rooted yet stock ROM? I guess I should then follow up and flash the OTA ROM as well using the normal steps in recovery menu? I do not need to go back to S_ON or CID lock, just wanted to go to stock rom.
Thanks!

I’ve recently rooted my desire (gsm) using unrevoked (Linux) and i thought it would also give me S-OFF but apparently I where wrong. I've already searched around looking for a way to get S-OFF and in all the TUT’s, Guides etc. it says that you should have an unrooted stock HTC 2.2 ROM or at least an official HTC ROM and that’s the problem…
I’m using Cyanogen Mod 7.1 and I had a backup of my stock 2.2 Sense ROM but I lost it.. or. well... i deleted it accidentally.
Now the question is; Can I still get S-OFF and how? Do I flash a HTC ROM and then do it, should I use AlphaRev, Revolutionary or do it manually (if that works on Ubuntu)
All help appreciated
It should work fine with CM7 aslong as you didnt flashed any a2sd/d2ext scripts.
If i remember correctly, i was doing my first S-OFF with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=768703&highlight=leedroid

Noob here
I decided to try and get jelly on my 2 y/o phone and it went really wrong. I tried different guides on how to root and S-off. Now i have lost all control.
The only thing my phone can show is HBoot (volumedown+pwr menu) and clockworkmod recovery.
I think it's rooted, but s-off didn't work out for me.
could anyone please help fixing that and get CM 10.1 working on it or at least restore it so it have android again?
I'd you want help you need to provide details. What state was your phone in? What exactly did you do? What state is it in now? Were there any error messages?

State before was Android 2.3.5 Sense 3 i think. Just normal according to HTC spec nothing modified and everything working.
Bootloader is unlocked, S-on, maybe rooted, no OS, only have clockworkmod and the defualt screen from pwr+volumedown.
The only procedure i really got to do anything was this Full HTC Desire HD (sense 3.0/android 2.3.5) guide to root, S-OFF/Sim Unlock
I had problem with /sbin/sh errors during this procedure. Also i got some others fails from codes. i couldn't get "adb shell /data/local/tmp/goldcard -c <string of numbers and letters should go here> -o /data/local /tmp/goldcard.img" to do a thing.
I don't know if there is much else to tell. but i have now used 2 days and i have surrendered and need some serious assistance think.
thx for helping
If all you want to do is root and flash a custom ROM, an unlocked boot loader and a custom recovery is all you need.
Install original is from HTC and then root it with oneclickroot than install what every you want. I think oneclickroot is the only working app for desire hd latest Rom version
