re-root with s-off - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys I've searched and haven't really seen a simple answer. I have the s-off from unrevoked and did the OTA update and had root even on the OTA. Now like a week later my root randomly stopped working and I can't load my recovery. How can I load a recovery back up?

You should be able to get the PC36IMG zip. From here and flash it from your bootloader if your s-off.

Edit: oh thats a link to ra amon recovery.

i want to know how to gain root back?
Do you have superuser on there?
Flash Clockwork from your sd card
http://downloads.unrevoked.com/forever/recovery/clockworkmod/PC36IMG.ZIP
Then using clockwork flash superuser
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=682828
That will reroot the phone provided you have S-OFF

How did you root originally? Shouldnt of done OTA with root. Can you get into your hboot? S-off or S-on? If S-on then you would prolly have to reroot.
S-OFF. Thanks for the reply. So, with s-off, where do I go from here?

You can flash Amon RA or Clockwork recovery from the bootloader and then flash the superuser zip from recovery.

[Q] Need to Unroot

Theres a new OTA of course that includes gingerbread but I need to download 3.7 in order to get to that. That of course means I need to unroot and thats my problem. I cannot get rid of clockwork recovery and have tried all day to. (Havent showered). I have s-on and used unrevoked 3 to root. Please help me get rid of clockwok recovery.
Why not just flash a rooted version of the update there are a few good ones out and once you unroot it will be harder to root after the update.

If you don't ever want to root again, or if you don't mind waiting awhile, just run an RUU from your computer or flash a PC36IMG of the RUU through the bootloader. This will get rid of your recovery.
If you want to stay rooted, don't accept the update. If you can still get into recovery, flash unrevoked forever through recovery. Or just run unrevoked from your computer. Then download a stock rooted rom from here and flash that. Do a nandroid backup before flashing. Accepting the OTA while s-on will leave you without root until someone finds a new root method for the latest update.

I tried a PC36IMG and they sad they were invalid. I also tried an RUU and all it did was wipe my phone storage.

Unable to update Evo

I am fairly new to the rooting process, but i did root my EVO 4G a few months ago and everything seemed to be good. When i attempted to update, the installation froze and i have to remove the battery. I used unrevoked3, but it used the forever process. Can this be fixed..anybody?

If I am not mistaken you need to do unrevoked3 then do unrevoked forever. Atleast that is what I did.
Can you get into the bootloader? Does it say s-off or s-on? What's your hboot version? Can you get into recovery?
It's a general rule to not accept OTA updates when you're rooted. In the future, just flash the rooted version instead of updating OTA. If you can get into recovery, download the stock rooted 4.24 rom from the development forum & put it on the root of your SD card. Boot into recovery and wipe & flash and you should be good to go.
If you're s-on & can't get the phone to boot then you're going to have to take it to Sprint or try running the 4.24 RUU.

[Q] Rooting help!

So I decided to try and unroot my htc evo 4g with this tutorial i found:
[GUIDE] How to Unroot the EVO in 2 STEPS http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=780141&highlight=unroot
I began with the steps that just involved transferring PC36IMG.zip onto my root folder and booting into boot loader. I ran the update and everything and rebooted and my phone seemed to have factory reset. i went back to my bootloader tho to find that it still says "s-off" so i guess its still rooted? I then installed rom manager and when i go to app it says im not rooted. Im so lost and confused I assumed i need to flash a recovery so i used this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=705026 and tried each way. none have worked.
Please help!!
Thanks
Your not rooted just s-off which makes it possible to root.. If you get s on and update your phone to a newer hboot then you can't root.... If you want to be rooted again and have a custom recovery your gonna have to flash a recovery and flash su

the only thing that can be flashed in the bootloader that will wipe your phone is a RUU. Flashing a recovery wont erase anything
I also did the bootloader thing and ended up getting a big "**unlocked**" and "**relocked**" symbol above the regular Supersonic EVT3 S-ON. So I dont where this leaves me when its talking about my warranty and getting the device repaired. I wanted to re-root my device but nothing is working now that I am HBoot 2.18
Hey all) Maybe someone knows where to get information on how to write scripts for root.

unlock bootloader then downgrade to a earlier version of android like 2.3.3 then accept the OTA and it will say LOCKED s-on http://themikmik.com/showthread.php...18-HBOOT-with-HTCDev-com-No-More-Watermark!-) dont do the root part after you downgrade to a earlier version
I just tried this today and it should work.. Use the "HEX" zip file from this forum. Rename it PC36IMG and place it on the root of your SD card..

Such a pain in the butt now. I tried to get s-off for my nephew earlier this month but I threw in the towel. Thought it would be as easy as my phone but it was too late as he had updated his bootloader. My phone was rooted back in January, nice and easy.
