[Q] Risk of upgrading custom ROM from Froyo to GB? - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Currently I'm using Myn's TwoPointTwo Rom, which is a Froyo custom ROM. Now that the official GB ROM is out, I'm thinking of upgrading the ROM to something that is based on GB (Kingdom REVOlution perhaps). However, I get the feeling that it's not as easy as reflashing one Froyo ROM to another.
So, regarding that issue, I have 3 questions:
1. Is there any difference or additional steps for Froyo->GB that was not in Froyo->Froyo process?
2. I'd like to keep my contacts/messages/WhatsApp & KakaoTalk chat content/etc. Would Nandroid Backup guarantee this?
3. Would it be possible to go back to Froyo if anything goes wrong?

1) No, not really at all. Some of the 'larger size' sense gingerbread roms are such big files, that it works out better if your sd card is partitioned to ext2 or ext3. However, that is NOT necessary, and you can flash the rom without partitioning the card. Also, if you choose not to partition your sd card, some of the larger roms may leave you with less space available to install apps
2) The easiest way to keep your contacts backed up is to keep them synced with your google account. If you're unsure if they're saved as google contacts, the quickest way to check is to sign into your gmail account on a computer, and then in the upper left side, click on 'contacts'. If your contacts are there, then you're good. They'll automatically restore when you sign into google on your phone. If they're not backed up as google, or if you don't want to back them up to google, then you can export them to your sd card. To do that, go to your contacts/people app. It menu, then choose import/export, then export to sd card. That will save them to your sd card, and at a later time when you flash the new rom, you can do the same thing, but choose 'import from sd card' and that will restore them. When you restore them, it asks you if you want to save as google as phone, so you can choose google at that time if you'd like to. I never save my SMS messages, but if you need to, there is an app that I know works from the market, called SMS Backup +restore. Try that out. To save the apps you want to and their data, I would suggest using Titanium Backup. That will backup the app and the data (your settings/content within the app). The nandroid backup will backup your entire rom. The way your phone is when you create the backup, is the EXACT way it will restore.
3) Absolutely
I suggest trying MikG 1.03 or one of the Synergy betas (myn, aamikam, virus, incubus26, djzager,'s project.)
Good luck

Thank you, it really helped a lot!!

Possible to completely backup stock phone?

I have a stock (2.1) Desire and am now considering rooting it for the first time. If possible, I would like to make a complete backup of the device before flashing a new rom, to be able to revert and restore my current apps/settings if I for some reason would like to do so.
Is this possible, and if so, can you point me to a guide?
If not, how much of my current settings/apps will be lost after rooting (with either a 2.1 or 2.2 rom), and how much is stored "in the cloud" and would be reapplied after flash?
Thanks in advance.
MyBackup Pro can do pretty good job with apps, settings and data
Thanks for the suggestion.
Looking at the product description, I don't really find any mention of what data is backed up, other than data from a short list of applications neither of which I use.. Also it seems to store the data on the developer's servers, which is not at all what I want.
Thanks anyway..
it allows you to choose where you want to store it, sd card or their servers...
Only few things will miss after restore, like market entries for apps... I can't remember all the details

[Q] Problems with backups, how to restore missing apps

Dear All
Having a rooted Desire with Froyo and Apps2SD+, i needed to migrate to a bigger 16 GB card. In that (failed) effort I decided to remove all apps and then restore them.
I backed them up via MybAckup Pro and Titanium Backup. Then, after reboot, no backups were detected by TB. I even wrote to the support but no answer. I had to revert to MyBackup Pro which apparently had a mind of its own regarding which apps to restore. Now Google Maps is missing on my phone and neither will it install. Also, com.gapps are closing on me every minute.
I have decided to do a factory reset but it'd be nice if a few questions are answered first:
1) I understand that NANDROID is the best way to back up; however, it doesn't provide me a way to restore apps one by one or in batches. Any solutions?
2) When I do a factory reset, will I end up with a clean phone with root and my current custom ROM, or the phone as it came from Orange?
3) Is there a way to install Google Maps and to remove the gapps errors without factory reset?
4) If I restore from NANDROID after factory reset, will all the errors/instability come back as well?
Thanks
1) Nandroid does an image of your custom phone, like for example Norton Ghost would do. Its like saving the setup/state of the phone at the time you do the backup.
2) A factory reset deletes all user data. You end with your current ROM as it was a clean install, it will not change the ROM you're using. If you're using a custom ROM you will still be with that custom ROM.
3) Can't Google Maps be downloaded from Market? Also you can try to extract the .apk from a ROM and copy it to yours via adb for example. As for the errors I dont really know if they're because data corruption and a reset will fix them or its the apk that isnt working as intended.
4) As I said earlier, doing a Nandroid is doing an image of the current state of the phone. If you do a Nandroid of a phone that has errors and you restore it, the errors wont disapear.
If you want to have a backup of the list of apps you already have you can use AppBrain. Its a little app that syncs your list of apps from the phone into a google account so when you do a full wipe you have only to install that app again and sync with the saved google list of apps. It wont save the data of the aplications but it will save the list of the ones you've installed.
Azureus: That is a most helpful reply, I sincerely appreciate it.
Google maps is not appearing in the market. I tried to sideload it and it still doesn't install. Thanks for the GREAT AppBrain trick.
I would appreciate if you could answer:
1) Which is the best, most stable custom ROM to use with official Froyo+Sense, Apps2SD+ ? I have doubts about stability of current ROM.
2) Which app can enable me to back up apps and then restore them one by one, given that Titanium Backup is not working for me somehow?
1) I personally use OpenDesire and its a non Sense UI ROM, so I dont really know what Sense UI ROM is the best. I've tryed several Sense UI ROMs and two that gave me a good feeling where LeeDrOiD Mod and the official Sense ROM of OpenDesire Team.
2) I've tryed several apps for data backups and the one that I liked most was Titanium Backup... May I ask why isnt working for you? I've tested both the free and donate version and they seem to work pretty well...
Thanks. Will try Leedroid now.
As for titanium, or backs up everything all right but when I try to restore it shows nothing. Don't know why is that
Titanium Backup saves the backups by default in a folder as the same name as the app in your SD. Have you tried deleting all the folder and doing backups again to see if the restore works? You can also go to settings and change the default folder in which it saves the backup to see if its a problem with de folder/SD or its the app.

[Q] A couple of question before flashing Fresh EVO..

I've decided go give Fresh EVO a try (thanks to all those who recommended it), and have installed ROM Manager to help simplify it as much as possible. But I'd like to ask a few, perhaps noob questions, before I roll with it.
I have the zips for the ROM and the latest Radio/PRI on the sd card, and I think ROM Manager will let me flash both from there (if not, I'd appreciate any thoughts).
I've backed-up the phone, both with AmonRa and ClockworkMod (as well as with Titanium Backup), and copied everything to my PC. Now my primary hesitation is about reinstalling apps, etc. afterward.
1) After I flash the ROM et al, does this give me a basic stock-ish ROM and then I simply reinstall Titanium and reinstall my apps?
2) Do I need to worry about reinstalling data, or any of the various .img files that were backed-up previously? All my contacts and phone numbers, do they come from the 'cloud' when the phone connects to Sprint, or do I have to reload them somehow?
Anything that might be helpful to know, feel free to point it out.
Thanks in advance..

1) Yes, all you need is to restore your apps via market OR from TB (if you need to get like your high scores or alarm settings, TB is the way to go)
2) No, once you log on to your google account your contacts, calendar and google email will be sync with your phone. Any other email accounts should be set manually afterwards.
Installed Fresh EVO just now...and good to go.
I'm following up on my earlier post to relay my experience after flashing Fresh EVO and the Radio/PRI that were recommended with it.
Perfect! That about covers it in a short version. Longer explanation below.
I had a stock EVO that was fully rooted but had not been updated to 2.2..see my first post. For all others nervous like I was, I read everything I could and obviously posted a few questions to get a feel for any problems that might arise. I decided to pay for ROM Manager since it seemed highly recommended, and then ran everything from ROM Manager. It worked well for backups, flashing ClockworkMOD and AmonRa recovery back and forth to do the backups. No problems. (Caveat: It would not automatically download the Fresh EVO ROM from the entry in it's list for some reason. I had to move it to my SD card after downloading it to my PC. But no worries there.)
From there it was a breeze. Go to ROM Manager, choose to flash from the SD card, pick the Fresh zip (select to backup the ROM -and- wipe), and let it run. It took a few minutes, rebooted, and came up perfectly. (PS..the boot screen and the audible 'freshhh..' was a nice touch).
Now, you can easily go back to Android Market and download ROM Manager again (and the Premium upgrade, which seems to auto-detect that you had already purchased it..sweet.)
Open ROM Manager and the flash the Radio/PRI zip from the SD card.
I reloaded Titanium Backup (the license, if you bought it, should still be on the SD Card), and selected to reinstall any apps I wanted back.
I've checked my settings, and everything looks pristine. I turned on 4G, Bluetooth, WiFI, and went to settings and looked at the hardware MAC address for each and they all show up fine. 4G turns on fine, but at the moment I live in a 3G only area so will double check it tomorrow when I hit a 4G locale.
All in all, it was absolutely painless, once my nerves settled But for anyone who cares, I highly recommend ROM Manager, Fresh EVO, and Titanium Backup...they made this a smooth process and I'm back in business.
Thanks to all who answered my questions, and all you brilliant developers.

[Q] Epic rooting questions

Okay im going to get my epic 4g today and i wanna root my phone and install a viperom along with genocide overclock kernal. I wanna do this right out of the box before i put in my contacts but if i want to switch roms i know it will wipe my phone clean. so my questions are how do i back up apps and contacts i see people mentioning titanium back up. Also is new apps available after rooting my phone? And whats the difference between roms and themes? do i need both? Last but not least i see people saying to partition my sd card why do i need to do this? if installing kernals and roms flash my phone how does this effect my sd card? i just dont wanna forget a step and mess something up. If im forget a key part please fill me in thank in advance
Your contacts will be synced with your google account so they will never be deleted.
As for your apps yes titanium backup is the best way (IMO) to backup all their data.
Yes rooting will allow you to take advantage of apps like "AdFree Android" and "SetCPU"
Roms are an entire system were as themes can be flashed over a compatible build/ROM to make your phone look the way you want it to.
you only have to partition your SD Card if you want to set up Apps2SD
which moves your apps and cache to your SD Card so you have more internal memory.

Help w/few things

How do I move apps to my SD card so I dont need to reinstall them everytime I use a new ROM? I tried moving manually by checking move to SD but it didnt move anything...
Also, any new contacts I add are never saved in my google sync..I sync every new number to google contacts but whenever I install a new ROM they are never saved in there..whats the deal?? Are there other ways to save so this doesnt happen?
Last issue is w/ROMs...Pretty much no roms work anymore...before it was only a few that didnt work. But now none of them work. I tried the latest of 10 ROMs and some cant even load while others load and hang at the white HTC screen...The only ROM that works is MIUI...what happened all the sudden??
Now with MIUI how do I change CPU settings? I dont see any section for this like in CM7...? Anyone

When adding a contact make sure the contact type is google and not phone.
The apps you can't take then from rom to Rom your always going to have to reinstall them
Make sure you are wiping everything except sd card. and that you ARE NOT USING CLOCKWORKMOD
MIUI you have to use setcpu it doesn't come with the option built in

You REALLY need to click the link in my sig and read the Evo guide. All your answers are in there
evo4gnoob-Like I said in my post I use Google every single time...But whenever I do a flash from a previous ROM where I saved several new #'s the new #'s are never saved...?? Is there a more full proof way?
So when I move them to SD card that is merely saving me space on my phones internal storage by moving it to SD storage & not a backup so I dont need to keep reinstalling?
What is wrong w/ CLOCKWORKMOD? That is what I have been using...What else is there

That doesn't actually move the app to the card, just the app's data, which is wiped when flashing a new rom. You need to use Titanium Backup to fully backup apps.

Login to your gmail on a computer and see if the contacts are there. If they are, then they are synced. You can also export the contacts to the sd card in the People app.

Again it's not a backup, the os just moves the app's data to the card, not the app itself

Nothing wrong with clockwork. Some people just prefer to use AmonRA
MOST people prefer Amon Ra. CWM has a lot of limitations
Everything worked fine before...now no roms will work besides MIUI..maybe its a sign I should stick to MIUI lol...Im just worried that if miui wont load then Im screwed w/o any ROMS being able to work...

This just sounds like you're not wiping fully or that your recovery isn't working properly.
Download and flash Amon Ra. There's a newer one out that I'm going to flash once my battery dies and I have to switch batteries, it's version 3.08 and not the original. Since i haven't tried it yet I can't vouch for it, but version 2.3 has served me well for a long time. The file must be named PC36IMG.zip exactly and on the root of your SD card. Boot into hboot and it'll scan, find the file, and ask you to update - do so.
Once you've flashed either version of Amon Ra, do a nandroid backup. Then go to the wipe menu and wipe cache, data, dalvik, .android_secure, SD-ext, boot and system. Wipe them again. Then flash whatever rom you want and see what happens.
If you want to save your apps and their data, use Titanium Backup. Just don't restore system data across roms, only the apps you've installed.
As for the contacts problem, double check your sync settings. You can expert your contacts to your SD card then import them if you continue to have problems. On MIUI, open the contacts app, then menu, settings, export contacts, export to SD card. You should be able to import them on another rom.
You can download Amon Ra directly from these links-
Version 3.08 here: http://db.tt/YULEfMz2
Version 2.3 here: http://db.tt/WP0beNa
Only choose one. Both are already named correctly, so don't rename the file. I've heard great things about the new one, so I'd try that one first. From what I read in the thread it can restore ClockworkMod backups, so that's a plus for you. I'd still make a backup with this recovery before wiping just in case.
Good luck, let us know how it goes!

Friends don't let friends use clockworkmod.
I used to have this problem to. After flashing amon 2.3 recovery and wiping everything accept SD card, everything was fine
