[Q] usb OtG sII - Galaxy S II Accessories

anyone knows if this adapter works with galaxy sII?

I think so. Try and Google galaxy s2 usb on the go. There was a test video with a Nokia kable.

If I didn't remember properly, CA-157 has a Micro usb A connector. S2 is using USB B

iirc the CA-157 USB OTG cable has a microUSB A connector while the GSII has a microUSB B port. Won't work unless you trim the corners.
Just get the $2 for 2 USB OTG adaptors w/ free shipping from dealextreme.

i see... thanks all for replying!

I have on that works perfect on sgs2, reads sd cards/thumb drives/ and can use wireless mouse, and someone said they used a keyboard.

so the nokia CA-157 USB OTG (http://articulo.mercadolibre.cl/MLC-34497620-nokia-ca-157-usb-otg-n8-c6-e7-x3-c7-_JM ) works???

thats the nokia one from the link i posted i think it works... ill try it

It's not going to work. MicroUSB A plugs are not going to fit into a microUSB B port unless you trim the corners.
I'm guessing that's what the guy in the video did.

I have the Nokia cable that comes with Nokia E7 and i can assure it DOES NOT work!
the shape of the port itself is different and it won't fit into the galaxy s2 port.

Different Types...
There are two different types of nokia cable. One for the N900 or N810 and the other for others (known as CA-157) the only way to get a working cable for the SGS2 that is supposedly for Nokia is an unofficial (ebay...) micro-usb b so basically the N900 and N810 and a few others. Unfortunately Nokia have modified the ports slightly on their phones so they support the official Nokia cables (that only work on Nokia phones) and the unofficial MicroUsb Gender-X (depending on what the phone is.
This rules out all official Nokia cables and all Cables designed for Micro USB A Phones.

I got some MicroUSB OTG adapters from dealextreme and they work fine. Tested them with my 16GB thumbdrive and my Logitech unified mouse & keyboard dongle. Funny having a mouse cursor on my SGSII.

I have that cable for my S2 and all i had to do is trim corners..works flawlessly

Can you please share what kernel / ROM you guys are using? I got an adapter which works great with USB memory and wired USB mice, however, my wireless mouse does not show up and hooking up a wired keyboard hangs the phone hard and I have to pull the battery.
I tried Sensation by Crysis 1.9 (kernel is SpeedMod) and WanamLite 5.7 (kernel is Siyah 2.1) same results on both. Planning to try MadMack 2.2 tonight as its closest to stock. If the adapter was bad, it should not have worked with memory or wired mouse either.
Will appreciate any pointers in this regard.
EDIT:
I also tried CF-Root kernel as it is nearly stock, checked lsusb and dmesg outputs, lsusb is always correct but dmesg show kernel logs which are problematic. My wireless mouse is detected as keyboard (wrong), another wireless keyboard / mouse combo is detected as composite device (correct) but get error -104 while activating, wired keyboard gets detected but crashes something in the kernel, I also used 51-android.rules but not sure if it helps because /etc/udev did not even existed and I had to create it.
<4>[ 68.820948] generic-usb: probe of 0003:09DA:054F.0002 failed with error -104
Now as all of these devices work perfectly on my Iconia on Honeycomb I guess an ICS upgrade for S2 should bring similar results, so can only use mass storage till then

[Q] HDMI cable

Anyone know where one can be brought? also why have I read stuff about the s2 having mini usb? it doesn't it has the same propriety connector as the galaxy s.
It's MHL. It's the supposed new 'standard' for connectivity. I think most devices are using that connection nowadays. Last I heard was Clove saying the MHL adapters won't be out until June.

I can't find any evidence that it did.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mobile_High-definition_Link
It's the new standard, but that doesn't mean older devices support it. The SGS2 is one of the first AFAIK
But nothing on the market will currently work? HDMI out from a mobile is just supercool!
I have both an sgs1 and sgs 2, my charger fits the micro usb (the only i/o connector) on the phones, perfectly
The connectors should be the same on the S1 and S2, but only the S2 is MHL compatible.
I think MHL can use any 5 pin connector to send an HDMI signal while receiving power for charging.
I'm not sure if you'll be able to use the MHL HDMI out and USB at the same time, but I hope this is possible.
I'm also guessing that the adaptor will need to be a clever one with circuitry rather than a passive adaptor. Does anyone know if this will definitely be the case, and if so I'd imagine it'll have cost implications! Hope I'm wrong and a passive adaptor is possible
Coming from a LG Optimus 2x, that came with a Micro USB ---> HDMI cable. These are available from Ebay for a GBP 10 - would these work?
Yea guessing its just MHL compatible as the old port was usb compatible. Thats annoying, with all the talk of this new standard usb-hdmi port I was assuming it would use a standard connector and not a proprietary one.
It stupid really if all manufacturers used the same connector we wouldn't have to have multiple chargers/docks/cables
You can't use the USB port for MHL and USB functions at the same time, this is confirmed (if you search for MHL at youTube there is a great video with a person from the MHL consortium explaining it).
To badasschris: this isn't a proprietary port. Samsung, Nokia, Sony, HTC, Toshiba, and quite a few other partners are involved with it, it seems likely to become the standard for mobile devices (iPhone aside, I am sure Apply will continue to push their proprietary ports).

Are you absolutely sure it isnt proprietary? Why I am getting confused is because it has the same port as the galaxy s1 and I heard nothing about that being a standard port and you always have to buy a samsung charger not a [standard port] charger e.g. mini usb charger for any devices which have mini usb. So you are saying at some point the other manufactorers will have the same port and I will be able to use my galaxy s charger to charge them?
Galaxy S is a standard micro USB port, and lacks the MHL connection, its not proprietary at all, I use several non-Samsung cables to charge the phone in my car and from PCs. Most manufacturers, Apple excluded, use micro USB charging now.
The port in the Galaxy SII is not the same as the Galaxy S, as it has MHL connectivity in addition, but its function as a micro USB port for mass memory and charging is perfectly standard, and doesn't require special cables or connectors of any kind.

That sucks. I was hoping to look into making a tablet dock that used a USB capacitive touch screen & HDMI output for the screen.
A laptop dock using Bluetooth for the keyboard and HDMI for the screen would still be possible, or a tablet that used Bluetooth for the touch-screen.
This phone is powerful - it's annoying not to be able to use the hardware for more than just a phone.
I reckon Motorola is thinking along the right lines with the Atrix, and I hoped other manufacturers would be too, but this combined port indicates Samsung are probably not.

Plus you have the added fact that samsung like to mess with bluetooth meaning many devices wont work with it. I really hope the bluetooth situation gets fixed somehow as this device paired with a screen and a bluetooth keyboard/mouse and game pad gives you a portable computer / games console. without it its just an amazing phone
This should work perfectly with bluetooth mouse and keyboard, my SGSI does. It should also work with a Zeemote, unfortunately it doesn't have enough buttons to be that good for using in emulators.
I can confirm that the igo stowaway bluetooth keyboard works fine w/the SGS2 in case anyone's curious

Apart from USB thumb pen drives, do external hard drives, wireless keyboard and mouse, gamepsds work?

they all should work out of the box, except for hard drives, which will need additional power
I want to try this feature but cannot find an adapter that works. I bought one off eBay but that was no good, the supplier stated it was for the Galaxy Note but didn't work on Gingerbread 2.3+ which was odd as obviously the Note ships with Gingerbread 2.3
I contacted Samsung who said I needed the official Samsung OTG cable but they don't sell to Joe Public .. trawling endless sites to find a supplier came up zero.
So if anyone know of a supplier (UK preferred) of one of these compatible adapter / cables please let me know
Good to see someone started this topic, very useful..
I have the Galaxy note and managed to connect my Keysonic keyboard with builtin mouse with no problems. I have the otg adapter and when I plugged in the wireless adapter the note picked it up as a keyboard and mouse, worked great.

I've just tried my N8s adaptor but no luck I'm afraid. It's connector to the phone is thicker and simply won't fit into the Note.
Nokia (at least the official cable) uses the "correct" Micro USB A for Hostmode.
You have to get Micro USB B for the Note.
(B cable fit in A but not otherwise)

Are you referring to those external hard drives that take power from the USB port?
What about those external hard drives that take on a separate power supply, those that are attached to a power socket? Anyone tried plugging in one of those to a Note?
ok I just buy one and it did work fine with sandisk 64gb.
so it's confirmed that it can read portable drives.
looking forward to owning one.

G - NEXUS Micro USB Y Cable - Exists??

Anyone know if a MICRO USB to FEMALE USB cables are available? I posted a link below of what Im talking about but it is a MINI USB to female (example)
I'm trying to hook up a keyboard and a mouse to my galaxy nexus so im looking for a splitter that has 2 FEMALE usb ends
http://www.staples.com/Staples-4-Po...:Cables_Hubs_Adapters_&_Switches:715440:36302
I was wondering the same thing. I was thinking of making my own dock and having this apart of it would be pretty sweet.
i know im trying to find something like that. I was able to use an OTG Host Cable and i plugged my logitech wireless transmitter to it for my mouse and it worked on my Nexus it was sweet so i started thinking what if I can find a cable with 2 female ends so I can hook up a transmitter for a keyboard and one for the mouse.
Very interesting!!!
Motorola makes a micro USB to female USB. They sell it as an accessory to the Zoom. Use that with a USB hub.

I'd second the USB hub idea. I've got a small 4-port hub with a memory card reader built in that I connect via an OTG cable. The side benefit is that it's a powered hub so I can connect an external battery or AC adapter to it so USB devices will pull power from it instead of the phone. It's really not much bulkier than some weird multi-headed cable solution and when I only need one device (which is most of the time) the compact OTG cable works fine.
FYI, I don't think you can split the USB to support HDMI on one side and USB on the other, to my knowledge the chip in the phone only supports one at a time. Once HDMI is enabled you need to look at Bluetooth devices.
yea makes sense for the hub. I was just trying to avoid using bluetooth because Im sure the HDMI would draw power to push to screen but then again it would be plugged into the side for AC. I think that bluetooth keyboard mentioned earlier sounds like a good idea. It's got a mouse pad and keyboard all in one.

USB OTG on the Glide ?

Just that, if anybody can try this out would, it would be awesome. You can follow the steps in this article:

I will make the test myself when I have the phone, but, I live in Argentina so, It'll take a while, I'll be making the payment trough PayPal probably next Monday, soo, that'll be 5 days for the package to be delivered to my courrier's office in Miami, next, another 3 business days for it to be delivered to my partner's house in Chile, and, with luck, another 2 or 3 days till my partner pick it up and bring it to Argentina for me XD

Thanks ! Sounds good to me, Device detected it's gonna be always no, if nothing it's plugged, so that's OK, and, if the Kernel claims support, I'm pretty sure it'll work, after all, this is "Kind" of a Galaxy SII device.
Are you saying that if this works we will be able to plug in a USB Key or an SDCARD via a dongle and upload files to and from our phone. Wow that would be crazy useful. Imagine plugging your friends android phone in USB mode and transferring some files to him.
If we have USB Host anybody thought about this:

Seems like we match all the Requirements:
Hardware requirements
Dual-core 1GHz CPU
Video acceleration: shared kernel driver with associated X driver; Open GL, ES/EGL
Storage: 2GB for OS disk image
HDMI: video out with secondary frame buffer device
USB host mode
512 MB RAM

Yes, a mouse is displayed on the screen. It works great, right click acts like the back button, scroll click like the menu button, left click acts like your finger touching the screen (including drag, click and hold). The keyboard is similar with certain keys acting like the android buttons. Also, you can view and transfer files to and from your flash drive.
It works just like it does on the SGS2, tons of videos on YouTube. It's an awesome feature!

Wow I can't wait to try this.....Now, how would I use an MHL cable and a USB mouse and Keyboard.... Kind of would turn my phone into a PC if I could do that. Lets see a Micro USB to USB Hub. Plug into the hub the Peripherals then plug the MHL to a Micro USB to USB converter and away I go....Of course power the MHL. I don't think the MHL connector would like to go behind a USB hub though. In theory is this not what the docking station is doing in order to run the Ubuntu on android? OK not with this phone but on the one that they are demoing it on.

It's a lot simpler than that, just use this MHL cable:
http://www.samsungcaptivateglideaccessories.com/capigpitalsdfkzlig-11.html
Just plug it to your phone MicroUSB port, then plug a MiniHDMI Cable to the MiniHDMI port of the MHL cable, then plug that MiniHDMI cable to your Monitor/TV, on the other side, plug your phone's MicroUSB cable into the Female MicroUSB port of the MHL cable, and then plug that USB cable to a Hub, then just plug every other peripheral into the Hub, and of curse, if you're going to use an External Drive or something like that, remember to buy a 9V/12V AC Adapter for the USB Hub.

So your saying to plug the MHL adapter to the phone and to plug the Hub to the MHL device. I do not know if this will work as you need to Power the MHL adapter. Are you saying that powering the hub will power the hub and the MHL adapter? Have you tried this? I have the MHL adapter and I love the HDMI ability of my phone but I found I can not use to long a HDMI cable as it will not work since the HDMI cable is drawing power from the MHL adapter. 3 Feet works and 10 feet does not. I have not tested others in between yet. Oh and yes I do power the MHL adapter via another device (USB port to Power, or a Battery device to MicroUSB)

I have tried using the MHL and USB OTG cables at the same time and had no luck. Didn't attempt with any powered USB hubs.
What I have done is use the MHL adapter, and a bluetooth mouse and keyboard at the same time. Similar to video here, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEb-DICYCgg.

I ordered the OTG cable.
Not received yet.
Without the cable (and no USB device attached), it says:
Android API:
Claims support : No
Classes found : No
Device detected : N/A
Rooted API:
Claims support : Yes
Device detected : No
Kernel :
Claims support : Yes
Device detected : No
Will let you know the results, but verdict should be Glide support : No ....
BTW : I'm running Rogers ROM + Cranium Kernel. It may report different with AT&T and other kernel ....

Ok.
Received the cable.
It works.
ROM : Rogers (unklocked & rooted) + Cranium kernel.
USB key is mounted in usbstorage (/sda) and content of USB key is displayed (pdf, ...).
Mouse works as well.
Results posted on USB Host Diagnostics web site (using feature embeded in tool).
I bought a generic MHL cable online and couldn't get it to work; but got it working with two other phones. So apparently you do have to buy the special Captivate Glide cable. Can anyone verify this? I'd hate to pay extra for another cable that didn't work
What did you have to do to get your MHL Cable to work?
It does look like there are several different ones, so I'll try ordering another one...

He is talking about OTG Cable, not MHL Cable, no one has confirm that the MHL Cable works with the Glide, only way to know for sure, it's buying an Original Captivate Glide MHL Cable, that most likely it's the same one that for all the Galaxy S II variants out there

I bought my MHL cable at Monoprice.com for cheap and it works great with a 3Foot HDMI cable and powering the MHL connector.
THe only reason we are talking about the MHL and USB cable is because you need both working to really use the phone on a screen with a USB mouse and keyboard. I ordered a cheap USB host to Microsub cable on ebay when it comes from China I will let you know if it works with and without the MHL.

Did they work together?
Works for me sort of...
My micro usb port is loose & i have to hold the phone & cable tightly together to get it to connect. Because of this i can no longer charge my phone directly & have to charge spare batteries separately & swap when they run down.
I can also confirm the hdmi out works too & i have a bluetooth mouse that connects nicely at the same time for remote control.
Wished they would have used a usb mini instead of micro, as the micros tend to fail after moderate use.
