I know "to each their own" is the general answer to the question of best ROM, but I wanted some suggestions on some others to try out. After all, why root if you're not going to play around with all the cool mods and ROMs out there?
I've been rooted for about 8 months now. Started with Fresh for the first 4-5 months and loved it for its stability, but it was lacking the "cool" feeling to me.
So I went over to CM7 after much hype from Lifehacker and Engadget, etc. I did not want to switch to CM until they had their 4G issues worked out - I live in Dallas and we have a strong 4G network, so I want to take advantage of the extra $10/month I'm paying.
I played around with MIUI for a day or two and loved the feel of it, but of course no 4G support, so back to CM7 with me.
I think CM might be what I stick with ultimately - awesome community backing and update support, plus all the kinks are just about worked out with wifi/4G/GPS. Nevertheless, I'd like to try another ROM with these features:
4G is a must.
GPS - Like I said, I live in Dallas... Been here for years and still have to use Google Maps on a daily basis to get around.
No wifi issues - I spend probably 75% of my time within wifi range.
Speed - This may also be a function of kernel, but who likes to wait 10 seconds for your app to open?
Battery life - Not a priority over speed of course, but a 2 hour battery life just makes me look bad when my gf's iPhone can pull 16+ hours. I'm out to prove her wrong.

I absolutely agree. I was also avid Fresh, went to CM 7, now to MikG and with Sense 3.0 it is really really nice and very stable.
I've tried using CM7, but I am not an AOSP enthusiast..

Mikg v1.03 definitely everything is working for me been on it for 2 days now batterys not to bad for a stock kernel either I get about 9 hours of heavy use out of it.

I also was used to fresh when i first rooted, probably because of the functionality, but the updates and battery life for me were what made me switch to CM7, 7 hours for battery life with no use at all is just sad. I think i want to try something new too but i hate setting up my roms after flashing... I might try somehting new though

Adding to the pile of MikG Sense 2.1+3.0 recommendations. It's definitely not lacking in the "cool" department and I've been actually amazed at its stability. I figured that since it's based on a port from the Evo Shift that it would have weird issues, but I actually haven't run into any yet. It just works for me.

I've been using Decks ROM since about March and I can't see myself on another ROM at this point. You get spoiled by the battery life that's for sure. Solid as a rock too.
It's a pretty bare ROM. No fancy launchers or themes etc... It's a great blank canvas to work with.

So guys, i definitely need a sense rom because of the look ( especially the music player, 3.0 lockscreen like in insertcoin and apps) and the fast writing speed of my sd card...
i tried leedroid, rc hd mix, maybe a froyo rom would be better? Or recoment a different kernel?

I find al GB ROMS have poor battery life then I changed the kernel to MANU's and it was much much better. Maybe try a different kernel?

With Gingerbread I think the Reflex S is pretty OK for the battery or else it is possible to undervolt further.
Maybe you just need to calibrate your battery, if you change your ROM a lot. I use BatteryCalibration from Market and it seem to do the job.

Battery calibration does not work for me D the percentage drop fast to 99% percent again and so on
Yeah, I would do a full wipe. Especially if you are moving between different ROM's.
So far, the AuraxTsense 8.4 (Android 2.2) was my favorite in terms of battery usage - but since moving to 2.3.3 based ROM's, my battery drops faster when using the phone, but lasts longer when in standby.

Well, if Battery Life is your primary concern, you would probably get the best results with a Froyo ROM, since the kernels are further in development.
However, in terms of features etc. I think the Gingerbread is better. I personally like the Sense 3.0 improvements etc. So I am just crossing my fingers that battery life will gradually improve further
My experience is, that Gingerbread ROMs in general are battery hungry. As for sense ROMs i can say that LeeDroid suits me best regarding battery life. At the moment im on oxygen and get a day out of it with normal use.
Best results with battery life i had with LeeDroid Froyo ROM (v2.4 i think). Smartass governor and screen off - 245mhz max/min sometimes got me 2 days without charging.
Maybe this helps you finding a solution.
By the way, you can also improve your battery life by turning off the various Auto Sync features, for example Sense Sync, Facebook, Weather etc...

At first, the recommended manu kernel won't be working with sense roms, because it's an aosp kernel (so made for aosp roms).
Second, using setcpu and setting a screen off profile for it really improves standby battery power. I set it mine to:
128 - 442 mhz ondemand governor
Third, the display is the biggest and fastest battery drainer, no matter which rom you are using.

If you use smartass governor, you do not have to set an extra profile for screen off. This governor automatically uses the min cpu frequency when the screen is off.
smartass governor – is based on the concept of the interactive governor.
I have always agreed that in theory the way interactive works – by taking over the idle loop – is very attractive. I have never managed to tweak it so it would behave decently in real life. Smartass is a complete rewrite of the code plus more. I think its a success. Performance is on par with the “old” minmax and I think smartass is a bit more responsive. Battery life is hard to quantify precisely but it does spend much more time at the lower frequencies.
Smartass will also cap the max frequency when sleeping to 352Mhz (or if your min frequency is higher than 352 – why?! – it will cap it to your min frequency). Lets take for example the 528/176 kernel, it will sleep at 352/176. No need for sleep profiles any more!

May I suggest SalvageMod v1.2.1? It's basically pure Gingerbread (AOSP) and it's fast, stable and everything works. Battery drainange, of course, is subjective and based on usage for the most part. You can download it here. May I also suggest you use either LauncherPro or ADW for even faster speeds?

for any of the Gingerbread, Sense-based ROMs, battery life sux. hopefully the source code for the kernel will be released soon so that you can flash a custom kernel for those ROMs and make the battery life skyrocket!
as for space....i suggest using either VaelPak's Senseless ROM or any AOSP-based ROM (e.g. MIUI, CM7, Deck's, etc.). those usually take up less space compared to the Sense-based ones (VaelPak's is Sense-based but with sense taken out, hence "Senseless")
flash a custom kernel on top of those ROMs (netarchy for Vaelpak; CyanogenMODs, Tiamats, SavagedZen, etc. for any AOSP) and you will see improvement with battery life.

I've been reading around the forums in different threads and Man there is a lot to catch up on since I've always been an Epic 4g owner and not an Evo 4g owner. I've found a few threads about battery life and so far have installed 4 roms to test briefly battery life and none are giving me the same as my epic or close to it which was 0-2% drop an hour when Idle.(Sitting on my desk on 3g or wifi) Gone through cm7, Miui(Currently on) and 2 of the new sense 3.0-3.5 roms (Energy and nocturnal)
Kernel currently Tiamat 3.3.7 and I've tried the latest one 4.0.1 or something.
So far i've found the Vipermod kernel undervolt tweak, V6supercharger Option 7 (used before), 3g turbo charge script, and also applying gps fix from Miui thread.

I always freeze DRM but with the epic I found other processes starting with SNS to freeze, are these not on the Evo4g? or are they called something different? Also I don't see a System Update process that I used to see on the Epic and would freeze.
Calibrated method I use is charging to 100 percent and just using the Battery Calibrate app in the market. Its the first one that comes up when you search.
Any rom suggestions that I should flash to get better battery life? I need to use my phone for pleasure and work so everything needs to work except 4g and video recoding 720p. I need everything else operational.
Also any suggestions on other battery saving techniques would be greatly appreciated. I've got plenty experience with the Epic 4g but the evo 4g is so old school i feel like this device loves to eat battery way more than the epic when being used and when not being used.
FYI i have a moderate to heavy user.
EDIT: for those who could gain from this post, I'm going to be following Carhaulers recommended settings. Hopefully i get better battery life and everything runs smooth.

Results SO far and a Sense Question.
So as an answer to my own Question i've added the following items in my signature for my Evo 4g and I have no idea how this phone is operating so well at 128 HZ - 499HZ but wow its working smoothly. Battery is pretty sweet also. Still calibrating, drained it completely today and am charging right now to full with it powered off. Only time will tell.
I've had the phone off the charger for roughly 20 hours with no use for 50 percent of the time and the other 50 percent I was playing pandora, browsing xda/engadget, and playing 30-minutes to an hour of games. Not bad so far. Its better than it was before. Now this goes to saying i am uving like a mofo and underclocking.
New Question for those who read this, Is there a Sense Rom that will give equal if not better battery than what i'm seeing so far? and does COD tweaks work with sense roms?
MikG 2.61 rom works great and has great battery. Might want to try out Chopsuey 9.2.7 kernel with it as well.

I could get like 24-30 hours on myns warmtwopointtwo rom. Which is froyo. I only get anywhere from 12-15 hours on all the new gb roms.

The Epic's up to Gingerbread now, as of early November (finally). Froyo ROMs did get excellent battery life... I did like Myn's Warm TwoPointTwo, paired with a Netarchy SBC kernel... An incredible combination. I can still match that on Gingerbread, but Warm was awesome.

hmm, might give this a shot giving this gingerdeck a full 72 hours before switch. whats your kernel tweaks at on miks rom? whats your battery percentage drop per hour when idle?

I'm running into a problem with COD Tweaks, need assistance.
Currently have Energy Rom installed with Latest Chop Suey experimental and the COD Tweaks IO "Deadline" option is not available, i only see bfq and noop. Which do I choose? and Also I don't see smartass v2 or smartass in daemon control? Am I missing something?

ahh, ok how about for the IO scheduler do I set to noop or BFQ and Noop? in COD Tweaks at the top it doesn't tell you how to set your OOM Values? I've used v6 script manager before, should I do it through there?

If your really interested in battery life Energy Sensation XL 3.5 sense is awesome and very stable. I am currently running ics-decks-pre-alpha7 and really liking the battery life but you will have to give up ur camera until there is a alpha or beta version.

Choose BFQ between the two. And the information at the top is only adjusted values. You have to continue reading, they have pictures included to help you along

Nyan Colonel was originally created for the Epic 4G as an effort to bring all of the features from other Hummingbird devices to the Epic. Its using his default colors .. adjust them in the trickster mod app it installs. It even has morific's color aka trinity colors

stock 307 however you can overclock it with the file located at /sys/devices/system/cpu/cpu0/cpufreq/gpu_oc change it to 1 = 384mhz and 2 = 512mhz it applies instantly no rebooting required and will reset upon reboot.

It's fine... and if you using it for 2 hours straight.. duh thats what happens especially on 3g OR Wi-Fi. Kernel does not suck a s s .. and if your saying it does.. then your saying every other kernel he took cherry picks from sucks as well... -_-

Same here, lol I hope this kernel improves my battery life, either that or this phone battery just sucks. I miss my epic.
I initially tried the pegusus setting but my battery life was absolutely horrible, I have now switched to wheatley, which is what I have used on the kernel I was using before this one and battery life seems much better. Can anyone recommend any other settings that might help improve my battery life without killing my performance? Using wheatley on 1.3ghz max frequency with SIO.

I'm curious as to why you're even overclocked? I run 1ghz for everyday things. I'm trying to figure out which governor is best for me, pegusus sucked my battery life to, trying interactive which is met to be more geared to better battery life, I'll try wheatley next.

Really? I hate when people complain about the battery life of this phone. My roommate also has a galaxy nexus and last week he pulled 1day 9 hours .... completely stock. I never drop bellow 30% on a daily basis. Just cut your data when you dont use it.

It depends on you as the user how you use your phone.
I'm nearly constantly on it because its basically my PC.. I can suck out at least 4 hours of screen on time. Probably can suck out 2 days with light use.
But indeed.. to call this battery ****ty is an outrage. Its 10x better than my Incredible which can't even last an hour.

Lol my incredible could last a week with 2 hours screen on per day... GNex not be so much lol. Have 1.5 hours and 6 hours uptime with bamf diet kernel.

Just made the switch from Jedi Knight 5 to All Star Rom 4 for the massive increase in features and customizations (minus the Jedi themes which I liked and the wifi calling that I rarely used). I love it so far...
The only issue I have is battery life - e.g. last night my battery ran down 13% (usually only ran down 3% with JK5) while sleeping with it underclocked to a maximum of 1Ghz.
I've read good things about the KKO kernel - has anyone tried this with any success with All Star Rom?
Any other hints/suggestions so that I can get a full day out of this thing with moderate use and not have it run like it was made in 2007? (Powersaving mode in ROM control under AOKP isn't cutting it- quite laggy).

Because I am one of the devs behind the ROM, I can say that the h0tcakez kernel goes great with the ROM. To get batter battery life, enable CPU Sleeper and your phone shouldn't lose as much battery life overnight. Also, I am using ondemand governor with noop I/O.
