I've been running the Speed Test app and I was getting crazy high ping (1,500+) consistently and getting between 7Mbps-9Mbps download with around 1.5-1.9Mbps upload. I was using my old SIM card from my N1. I live in a "Very Good 4G" coverage area.
I went to a T-Mobile store today and got a new SIM card to see if that was the issue. My ping DRASTICALLY decreased (88-90) but my download/upload speeds also took a hit (5-7Mbps down and 1-2Mbps up).
Talking to the rep got me absolutely no where. She insisted because its not a T-Mobile phone, I won't get 4G or very high speeds. I insisted it is equipped with HSPA+21 and should be getting better speeds. She said there was nothing she could do and I should call Google...
Are 9Mbps an "acceptable" speed or should I try calling T-Mobile technical support and have them troubleshoot it?
(I changed radios from stock shipped from Google to the newest US one last night).

Pretty sure I responded to your other topic about this in a different thread w/ a long explanation so I'll give you the condensed version here:
Those speeds are completely normal for a T-mobile phone with a 21mbps HSPA+ radio. I would never expect to consistently see 9mbps on this device. If you regularly get 5-7mbps with good pings and can get upwards of 9mbps in off-peak times I'd say you're right on spot with everyone else.
I would never expect a random CS/store rep to be able to distinguish what kinds of speeds you'll get on an unlocked device. They know about the phones they offer directly and are supposed to indicate that they don't support or troubleshoot non-T-Mobile devices. When you buy unlocked you deal with it yourself. Of course you know that it has a 21mbps HSPA+ radio, so why argue? T-Mobile is not discriminating against your phone because its unlocked. They give you the full pipe just as if it was any other T-Mo phone. They deliver the speed to the SIM, you choose the device. As long as the SIM isn't faulty and your APN's are fine (default should be OK), you're getting max speed for you device/area.
Thank you for your response. I apologize, I must not have seen your response in the other thread. I understand buying unlocked means you deal with it yourself, I came from the Google store unbranded N1. The only reason I stopped in the store was to replace my SIM card, in case it was faulty. I just decided to ask her about it and she more or less was just trying to sell me the One S instead of answering my questions.
Anyway, I called technical support and was lucky enough to land a rep who I could barely understand *shrugs*. Out of the 12 minute call I only understood that I won't get 4G because its not a T-Mobile phone and my account was not updated to reflect the new phone (IMEI) and with that change I should expect better network performance.
Thank you for your detailed response though, I appreciate it.

Hi,
I own a VZW Galaxy Nexus, I'm not as phone savvy as I use to be and I can't for the life of me figure out/ find and reputable sources about why this phones signal sucks so terribly bad. Presently in my house I can rarely send texts and my calls will drop due to lost signal. I live in PA a few miles from Chambersburg/ Waynesboro (for those who may know the area). When I go back to MD I have no problems pretty much. I'd like to chalk it up to just where I live but I feel like theres another reason.
I've got Android Revolution HD not the 4.1.0 one (downloading now) I have the one prior. It works great, very smooth, no random reboots unless Im playing music, using the GPS, and charging it (which is odd...). I've read a couple different things about PRL one being that it can screw up your 4G and the other being that its no big deal. I have yet to do it because honestly I still don't believe it will make a difference.
What I am looking for is some confirmation so I can stop beating my head against a wall when I'm trying to send a text. Even over wifi I can't send one (idk if you can but I figure it shouldnt hurt it). I'm sort of missing my HTC Droid Inc 1...too bad the screen got smashed.
No one has a answer for me?
Patience young padiwan... someone will reply shortly.
I did notice something though, when my modem when completely herp derp and I had it shut off down stairs I got better reception then I do upstairs in my room with my PC : /
Edit: no idea if this means much but checking signal strength and it was at -100 dBm 1asu then went to -93 dBm 2asu,
Is your baseband I515.10? If so that's probably why. I have had two Verizon gnex, one with I515.10 and one with I515.9....
After talking to many people on here it seems that people that had a phone that shipped with I515.10 (including myself) have pretty frequent signal drop. Whereas the people that have I515.9 (what my first one was), do not.
It's a shame, but there isn't really much you can do about it other than call and complain that it is a well documented problem, and hope they send you a better one.
It's frustrating for sure, but I still wouldn't trade this device for any other.
Also, forcing the PRL CAN ruin your sim card, but it's not like it's a guarantee. As far as I know though, there isn't really any benefit in taking the risk and trying since the device auto updates PRL.

Yep my baseband is I515.1 ...LAME guess im gonna go call VZW
Good luck buddy.

just as a reference, texts rely on cell signal, so if you dont have cell service but have wifi, texts wont send/receive.
called them and it turns out i'm on the very edge of two distant Cell towers one at 5miles and another at 7miles. Biggest issue is the terrain because I like in Southern PA there are a lot of mountains and hills which interfere. The Tech rep also mentioned something about the time of year going into play because of the amount of water in the surrounding area which he got from an engineer @ VZW.
In all honesty it sounds like they were feeding you a load of crap. Not that there's no truth to what they say, but if you had a different phone that worked in your home, but your galaxy nexus is not working? Then what the verizon representative was saying would not be aplicable.

Yeah... That makes no sense at all man. It's just coincidence that 60% of Nexus owners have the same problem?

You can confirm this based on using an app called OpenSignal (free from the market). One of the tabs in the app is "Map" and will show your current location, as well as the location of the tower your phone is connected to, with a red line between the two.
It's because it's SAMSUNG PEOPLE.
No one will admit if anyone has any experience with any Samsung device they should know compare an HTC or iphone or moto photon signal to any SPRINT SAMSUNG PHONE ITS NOT SPRINT.
It's the Samsung software or hardware that's been glitched since day one since the first epic
They all have weak signal u can compare a photon which is Motorola to this galaxy nexus
Galaxy s2, galaxy s3 any Samsung, WEAK SIGNAL PHONES, and not one person realizes this with comparing the experience of device to Device on the same network
. How can u get 5 constant bars on a photon or 2 or 3 on HTC evo or sprint I phone in the same area, but always 1 bar on Samsung phones All on the same network. ITS SAMSUNG SKIMPIN OUT ON THERE BUILD QUALITY whether hardware or software related, it pisses me off they persistently ROLL OUT brand new Devices all year and waist good phones cause they can't build a stronger signal phone.
So forget about complaining about signal issues it won't change until they figure the real reason out

I have personally never had a signal issue, but I also have a baseband of .9. I feel this link gives a good insight of signal reporting on the GN.

In June I "upgraded" my phone to the HTC EVO LTE, with the understanding that Sprint would be turning on the service in the L.A. area sometime in September.
If you live in this area, you know it was delayed a few times, but you can now pick it up is certain areas.
However, it has recently been discovered that the EVO LTE has problems both connecting to, and staying connected to, LTE. It's ironic, considering it has LTE in its name.
I'm not here looking for advice on getting LTE working on this phone. The EVO LTE forum has plenty of threads devoted to that. But several people have started to lose patience and have been considering switching to the III. Both the III and the new iPhone have been reported to connect to LTE on Sprint network in areas that the EVO cannot.
So I thought I'd ask people who actually own and use the S III, and who are in areas where Sprint has LTE working, what you're experience is?
It will cost plenty to switch, and I'd like to avoid jumping from the frying pan into the fire if possible!

I made the switch from evo lte to the gs3. I have had it just over a week now and I can say that gs3 connects to lte much faster and stays connected. It picks up lte in areas where the evo does not. I even have the evo lte active on another line and I have been comparing the lte connection side by side for the past week.

I've never had an EVO, but I really enjoy my SGSIII. I live in a LTE area and my phone is constantly connecting to LTE. I have no complaints whatsoever. On the other hand, my cousin has the EVO LTE and is not happy with it at all. I don't know how often the phone connects to LTE, but he has mentioned more than once that he is not happy with it. We are in the same area.
The one time I used lte it connected fine and stayed connected.
My sister has an Evo 4G LTE, and more often than not, she's on 3G when my S3 is on LTE 2 feet away. She's dying to switch to the S3.
I am in Houston with sg3 and lte is very good around town, especially inside my house. So good that rarely use my 12mbps wifi anymore.
Thanks everyone.
So I feel like I got ripped off by Sprint now. Selling me a phone called "LTE" that can't really connect to LTE, but just enough to keep them out of court.
I will try to be patient (as if waiting since June isn't patient) and wait till after New Years and go to EBay. Hopefully, the SIII will go down a bit since the Christmas shoppers will be gone.

No, Sprint sold the phone. Sprint named the phone. Sprint said, "Here is our newest phone". "It's made to run on our new LTE 4G network".
Hell, Sprint even directed HTC to make changes to the phone to differentiate it from the One X.
Sprint is the one holding my $350 hostage if I'm not happy and decide to leave. Sprint is the one who won't let me switch phones without paying a hefty price.
Now, you can split hairs and say "well, technically the phone can connect to LTE", but connecting once or twice a day for 30 seconds isn't usable.
If they're not willing to let EVO LTE owners exchange phones for at least a refurbished S III, that tells me they don't stand behind their service.
Any way you paint it, I'm unlikely to renew with them next time. So, if my point of view is correct, Sprint loses. If it's wrong, Sprint loses.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
You don't quite get it. Sprint didn't make the hardware that is causing the issue HTC chose the lte radio to use, the radio is what's failing. Therefore your complaint lies with HTC due to manufacturer defects. If u buy a defective Xbox from Walmart its not walmarts fault Microsoft shipped them a defective product and you have to go thru the manufacturer warranty to collect on defects. You legally have no leg to stand on if u went to court against sprint, your case wouldn't even be heard and you'd be told to file against the manufacturer not the retailer/carrier. This is common knowledge and listed on every warranty and return policy in the country.
Sent from my SPH-L710
If I bought a defective Xbox at Walmart, it's highly likely Walmart would refund my money, whether they were legally obligated to or not. I could then buy a PS3 from them.
Also, they would not charge me $350 if I decided to leave and buy a PS3 at Sears.
Sprint will not be getting my return business. Period. I think they are the one's who don't get it, and that's reflected in their bottom line.
Please take all LTE discussions to the sticky thread.
Thanks

Im in the Los Angeles area and after 10 years of being with Sprint, Ive finally come to my wits end. The data is awful. Ive had a ppc6600, ppc 6700, HTC Diamond, Treo 800w, Palm Pre, Samsung Moment, HTC Evo, Evo3d, Galaxy S2, and S3. Ive been a sprint advocate for years now, probably gotten at least 6 people to switch to sprint. But I cant just deal with the dropped calls and slow data. No, its not my phone, my rom, etc. Its just Sprint. I called cust service to cancel and based on my call-connection ratio, they've decided to let me out of my contract without paying the ETF. I had to bring in my phone for one last diagnostic check, and the tech said its not my phone, its the network, and he totally understands me leaving. Im seriously considering T-Mobile for obvious reasons, but I was just wondering if anyone could share their experience with switching from Sprint. Preferably in the L.A. area, but Im open to hear other experiences. Are you happy? Is the cust service good? Mainly is the 4g data as fast/faster/more consistent?
I've recently had a few trips to L.A. and didn't have any issues with dropped calls or signal strength. The customer service is decent.
You could always go to T-Mobile's website and check the coverage map if your worried about the coverage.
I've had sprint....never going back lol.

I'm not with tmo, but I have my son on their $30 plan. Also not in the LA area, but some 40 miles north. I can say up here in the desert, tmo is awful. He can't make phone calls inside our house. can't judge data cuz he's using tmo service with skyrocket so only receives edge. Even when we go down to that area for any reason, he has at most 3-4 bars while my at&t s3 has full with lte. Good luck in your choice.
Been w T-Mobile for 13-14 years (since the voicestream days!). Never have had an issue, customer service has always been good to me too. Far far from your area, but I for one have no intention of leaving anytime soon.

Thanks for all the responses! In the past 2 days I heard negative feedback about t-mobile from radioshack, target, and best buy. They all said its worse than sprint, and that's why they don't carry T-Mobile anymore. I do realize that of course they are going to badmouth the company they don't sell, but I must admit I'm more confused now than ever on what to do.

Best bet is to find people around you with tmo. Friends, family, coworkers. Anyone, just ask around.
I had sprint and switched. Sprint's coverage along pch is better than tmo, but Sprint's data sucks ass. By default tmo phones have built in WiFi calling to help with bad coverage in the mountain areas. Without WiFi calling you'll still have good coverage in most populated areas. Tmos customer service is better and their prices are comparable.
Long story short, switch dude. Tmo is better in LA.
I semi gave up on Sprint. By that I mean I dumped them and went to Ting. No, it doesn't change the piss poor data rates but the lower cost makes it a bit more acceptable.
Testing TMo right now, actually its mvno Solavei. Data rates are much better BUT coverage isn't as widespread as Ting (Sprint). For now I'll keep both in case I find myself out of territory on either.

+1 I have had T-Mobile in San Diego. Decent Coverage Decent Data. LA has quiet a lot of coverage from them. I have been with T-mobile for 9 years. I have made others switch to T-mo as well. I will not even think about switching to others.
As to the Radioshack and others crappy feedback, know this, These Sales guys get hefty commission for pushing VZW and Sprint. They don't probably get as much commission from T-Mo. So it is in their interest that you don't switch to T-Mo.
Here's T-Mo's Coverage map. Enter your address and it will tell you what kind of coverage you will get.
Lol! That just reminded me....
Anyone see Verizon's recent commercial? They had the coverage maps and theirs was the only one you could tell was for the US. When they show T-Mobile's LTE coverage it's this tiny little bit, less than anyone else, but you have to pay very close attention! It's not T-Mobile's coverage, it's labeled T-Mobile/Metro PCS!
So their only showing metros LTE coverage, but since T-Mobile bought them, Verizon labeled it with T-Mobile to trick people into thinking they were showing tmo's coverage instead!
To me this says a few things!
T-Mobile LTE is more of a competitor than people give credit for.
Verizon must be getting desperate to resort to tactics like this!
Sorry to go a little OT. But it can be relevant in that the other carriers don't want to show T-Mobile's actual LTE offerings. They have been expanding and upgrading like crazy the past few years, and are continuing to do so. So don't write them off if someone says their service was terrible a few years ago. It may be completely irrelevant now.

I certainly hope this does Not happen, I had sprint for many years, and I just could not stomach having to deal with them again.
Re-carrier: Activate. Form 2-year contracts overage fees super ****ty customer service!
No! T-Mo is the only carrier that's doing it right! Sprint and VZW need to die a painful death for using the abomination that is CDMA so that we can get rid of CDMA for good and have universal GSM that works on all carriers. At least it's Sprint and not VZW though, Sprint's Note 3 is still bootloader unlocked and Sprint has truly unlimited data. I would say that puts them in 2nd place because AT&T and VZW are both monsters when it comes to contracts and bootloader locking. Ideally T-Mo will refuse, but honestly if worse comes to worst I'd rather see Sprint buy out T-Mo and build a GSM grid than see AT&T buy it and become the one and only GSM provider in the US and sell only crappy restricted locked versions of phones.
This could be a good thing, for everybody.
Lets ignore the fact sprint sucks, now lets realize softbank japan owns them & are doing everything they can to have better rollouts and structure. If Sprint does acquire tmo, its not like the tmobile towers are suddenly going to vanish, they need the tmobile structure as its better then their own.
So?
If this lets softbank focus on Sprint Spark majority rollout for Tri-band devices & LTE-A with the new influx of money and a better 4G network courtesy of magenta and not have to worry about their hideous towers currently servicing 3G/4G in overlap zones they should be able to vastly improve their networks across the board & focus on next gen tower rollouts before red or blue.
This could be a good thing, also considering I wouldn't mind going to a plan that guaranteed unlimited for life.
However, I dont think itll happen
1* ATT/TMO merger, sprint whined, whined, and whined...now THEY suddenly want to acquire them? If I was deciding I would tell sprints execs to get a life.
FCC decided against the AT&T and T-Mobile merger back in 2011, why would they approve this? granted, T-Mobile has wanted to get out of the US market for some time but such deal would not be in the best interest of the consumer.
just stirring up the pot again.... this would just lead to higher prices to cover such merger

I just paid my last Sprint bill the other day. And I had to fight them for 2 months to get rid of the charges they said I would not have on my final bill. Sprint was ok, not great. When I lived in LA, service was actually top notch and the wi-max was somewhat decent. When wi-max turned out to be a piece, and I moved, they said 4g would be in my new area (Central California), like 3 years ago and we are still waiting. But quite honestly, it makes sense. Maybe this is how they are going to get 4g in my area...LOL, since I have just switched to t-mobile and service is great! I think with their new purchase of frequencies and t-mobiles already implemented 4G service, they actually stand a chance of turning into a decent wireless provider. And quite honestly, I have had terrible customer service from every carrier (except t-mobile, but it is still early). If Sprint soaks up t-mobiles network, expands the frequency bands onto it, and gets rid of CDMA, they would have an awesome network. Keep the t-mobile policies of phone purchases, unlocked bootloaders, wi-fi calling, and no-contracts with unlimited data (4G) for life from sprint and I will be the first one in the door.
T-MO wanted out of the U.S. market when when they weren't doing so well. This last year they definitely turn around and I for one don't see any reason why they can't continue that tend. The other 3 carriers have tried to follow some of the things that T-Mobile had done but are too afraid of screwing with their bottom line. But hey T-Mobile played the game with AT&T which was denied and t-mobile ended up with a 4 billion dollar pay day maybe they can do the same again.

That is funny. I was in the north west area of LA. Didn't have many large buildings around me, but my experience was the exact same as yours when I moved to Fresno. I work literally 5 minute drive from my house, and I could not get home without my call dropping at least 3 times. And, of course my wife always had to talk to me the entire 5 minute drive home, so frustrating. They actually tore down the tower that was in between my house and my place of work, and moved it further west from where I lived. I got a free air rave and a discount, so I stuck it out until no etf. I am happy with t-mobile now, but if they did merge, they have the potential to do the right thing, and build a good network.

I too would prefer to not be a Sprint customer again. Having to purchase a full price phone is a big nut to crack but I'd rather save monthly. I wouldn't be opposed to an increased quality of T-Mo's network but I don't think Sprint is the way to make that happen. A friend of mine is getting like 5x more speed than me and he is on AT&T. The increased speed would be nice for sure
