Problem with usb connection to laptop - EVO 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm having usb errors from my laptop and it is being caused by my evo. I can connect it just fine and use it as a disk drive if needed but my windows 7 (64 bit) keeps saying that the usb device is not recognized. I tried disabling and enabling it. It's definitely the phone. Is there a special driver for android I need to install to my laptop? Any other suggestions if not?

Try deleting all the drivers and installing again. That should do the trick. Make sure you have adb drivers installed.

I downloaded the android sdk and sdk manager. Online it says there should be usb drivers but mine doesn't have the drivers. I installed all the packages and there is nothing for usb drivers. Can you or someone send me those drivers or give me a link to where i can get them for the evo? I keep getting usb errors.

Have you tried installing HTC Sync?

No I haven't. I looked it up and it syncs outlook etc. What will that do? I installed the drivers and adb and the computer still gives usb errors. It says the device connected has malfunctioned when it isn't plugged in. It's driving me nuts.

I'm pretty sure that HTC Sync installs USB drivers to help facilitate the various syncing things it does. At worst it won't make any difference, at best it might solve the problem. Can't really see a reason to not try it.

I tried it. Uninstalled and reinstalled and still getting usb errors. Any other suggestions? When I unplug my laptop sometimes i get the blue screen because of a problem with a bugcode usb driver.

I'm having a similar problem but my phone wont even with Vista on my laptop. I have downloaded HTC sync, and Android SDK, did a combo of USB settings in phone and still no luck. All my phone does it charge..how can i get it to disk?

Doesn't matter what version of Windows you're running, go to device mangler, and uninstall ALL of your USB drivers while online. Re-boot, and it should re-install the correct drivers from the internet. My USB drivers were dated 2006, before I did this! And that was in Windows 7!

Win7 x64 and recovery (no connection to phone)

Hey folks,
been searching and searching without any luck so far, trying to find a solution to my phone not being reconzied if i put it in recovery (volD+boot, back+power), windows sees it fine if i open the phone normally and connect it to the pc.. and i can use the ADB shell to detect it
# ../../..: adb devices
but no adb connection if the phone is in volD+power or back+Power.
sometimes Windows detects the Android 1.0 in Device manager but i wont find the drivers no matter what kind/version i fetch off the interwebz and no matter where i put it. i worked once and now the connection is just broken...
i have gotten sick and tired of the fact that i cannot get paid APPS and that the phone is filled after like 10 APP installs so i decided to root specially cause there now was a fix for the brick ...
but it seems like im pretty stuck .. neither of the 2 Rooting methods work cause of the lacking connection.... barghh...
I hope my english is not to horrible for you to read...

HELP
Hi!!! i have this problem!!! Help we please!!!
I want use usb connection for tether, but driver not found or error connection.
Also got this issue, one week that I'm trying EVERYTHING
The device is well recognized by windows but the adb can't find it (it says no device found)...
Thanks a lot for the help!
Noob question. .. did u installed htc sync? It contain USB driver 4 Windows. ..
Yeah. I have installed HTC sync and the drivers, and i have downloaded the exctracted drivers and tried to point android 1. 0 to Them, but all w7 does is tell me that it did not find any drivers for the device.
Install the leatest HTC Sync....
Boot the Phone normally and activate USB-Debugging.
Wait for Windows this installed the driver....
boot your phone into recovery and now you have driver...
Worked for me
Windos 7 Ultimate x64
Do not plug your phone on any kinds of USB HUBS, USB Extender cabels, Front PC USB ports, or any kind of strange PC cards with USB ports.
Also use only original HTC cabel which you got with your phone.
Plug your phone in first USB port on the motherboard closes to the mouse and keyboard.
My phone wasnt recognized by ADB while it was conected to front USB ports, but other things where working fine (Sd card browsing and copying)
Try and report back if it helps.
I plugged it with the OEM HTC cable, also installed the latest HTC Sync, with both latest HTC and Android SDK x64 drivers, it just doesn't work..
On win 7 64 too.
Motherboard asus p5k,my device is working only with the rear usb port.
Must be a question of usb amperage...
Works fine for me, W7 x64 Ultimate, but I only use Windows to get into recovery - linux to root the phone initially

Windows 7 - Installing ADB

Ok, I've just upgraded to windows 7. I was pretty psyched about the whole thing, and my computer seems like a whole new machine, coming from XP 32 bit.
So one thing I'm attempting to get adb to work with my phone. Heres my first problem - right off the bat, my computer doesnt recognize my phone as anything but an unknown device. YES I'VE TRIED DEBUGGING, DISK DRIVE, ETC., but nothing works.
I go to device manager, all I see is unknown device. Ok fine. I download the adb files that allow you to download the Android 2.1 thing and usb drivers. Still nothing works. I go to device manager, try to update the drivers for said "unkown device" and i get a message "the drivers are the newest up to date" or something. I try downloading the 64-bit HTC Hero drivers, same thing. I download and install HTC Sync, same thing.
I get this message when I plug the phone in...
"USB Device not recognized
One of the usb devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message"
So my question is, how do i get my computer to recognize my phone, even as storage device??

try uninstalling htc sync and using a different usb port. does that work?
And to address how to get it to recognize as a drive, when you plug it in you should be presented with options where you can make it a disk drive. Or pull down your notification bar and change the type.

On the phone yes, I can select a different type. On my computer, I just get that unknown device message.
And out of the blue I just tried a different USB port, and now it works as a storage device.
Did you restart the computer after installing the drivers? Sometimes mine gets a little goofy like that.

i had that issue with one of my usb ports too. i think sometimes a bank of usb ports are used as basically a usb hub, and the evo doesn't like that, from what i understand.
Reboot comp, reboot EVO. Connect 'em, and then go into Device Manager, uninstall the "unknown device" (EVO), and then have it scan for new devices. Now, when it says scanning for drivers (or something to that effect) look for an advanced or "skip checking Windows Update for drivers" option. Then navigate to the ADB drivers in the Android SDK and tell it to use those. Make sure you have USB Debugging turned on, and EVO's set for "Charging Only".
If that still doesn't work, then there's an incompatibility with your computer's USB controller and Win7.

lol, I did all that a few times, but im sure its not an incompatibility issue. probably just a skipped step somewhere.

If your computer is old enough, incompatibility is a possibility. See if there's other ports you can use, like on a different side of the case. Also, what brand computer?

stop! lol its fine. it works. i guess i should have stated that i've been on these forums for quite a while, and have flashed and rooted a few different phones using this computer, but with xp.
i just switched to windows 7, and of course lost all my drivers, and everything I had saved would have to be switched to 64-bit. I just couldnt get anything to work, but it seems to work now.
and I dont know what brand necessarily this computer is. i built it. I do have a dell keyboard though.

[Q] Windows XP - unknown device

After rooting the phone (in this case to leedroid) I have been having trouble with 2 xp machines at work.
Both detect the phone as "unknown device".
Doesnt matter what I select, charge only, sync, disk drive, adb usb debugging.
I have uninstalled / reinstalled htc drivers repeatedly.
Tried just using android sdk drivers.
I have deleted
C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\Wdf01000.sys,
2. Remove: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Wdf
3. Remove: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Wdf01000
I have also removed anything under Vid_0000&Pid_0000
Everytime I plug it in, windows detects it as unknown device. It wont let me update the drivers.
Help please!
what do you mean it prevents you from manually updating drivers? has it ever worked before? have you tried showing hidden devices via command line then removing the old device manually and then reconnecting it?
yep did all that hidden devices stuff too.
You wont believe this but I saw a post about someone using a thicker usb cable. I recently switched to using a retractable micro usb cable at work. I brought the original htc usb cable into work today, plugged it in xp detected the phone straight away!!!!!
who would have thought a cable was the problem!!?? All that wasted time!

[Q] Can't connect to Kies through USB tried several things...

OK, did a search in this forum for "Found New Hardware SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device" as well as "connect to Kies USB XP" and other variations of these. I believe I have tried all suggestions that I have found, but advice would be appreciated
Firstly, I have a Dell mini 10 running xp that my E4GT connects to fine through Kies. My E4GT is running StarburstROM 1.9.5 with LoStKernel 1.0.0.8+EXP
My old HP pavilion, running the same version of XP however just says over and over "Found New Hardware SAMSUNG Mobile MTP Device" and the new hardware sound plays about every 5 seconds.
After a fresh install of the most recent version of Kies, I tried
Different USB ports
Different cables
Making sure no files have extensions longer than 15 characters. (or was it 16...?)
Recovering the drivers through Kies
Downloading and reinstalling/reapplying the USB drivers found in various links here on XDA
Uninstalling and reinstalling Kies
Going to Device Manager, right clicking on the yellow triangle of the samsung mtp device and directing the computer to install drivers from there
Still I get an endless loop of Found new hardware. Unplugging results in "a problem occurred during hardware installation...etc" Any thoughts I haven't tried yet?
Make sure usb debugging is not checked in settings/development/applications.
what? i thought usb debugging had to be checked?
and either way it shouldn't matter if the phone is in download mode, correct? maybe i am wrong. i would assume that since he got it to work on a different computer it is not a setting on the phone and a problem with the computer reading the device's drivers.
Yeah, USB debugging is off. Tried it with it on just for giggles, but no joy. I may just have to accept that it won't connect to that compy. Can't get it to connect to Kies or even connect just for file transfer. Had same trouble with my OG epic. Maybe something about the original driver install from back then....
I'll try manually removing all drivers associated with the device and see if a reinstall from scratch (again) will work. I'll also check the .net version again, but I think I already did that. Thanks all!

[Q] Still Can't connect to Win7 PC (driver issues?)

Hi there.
I picked up a refurbed Incredible 2 (running 2.3.4) and am trying to get it to connect to PC so I can move files across between the PC and either internal memory and/or microSD cards. I'm having no luck on Windows 7.
I changed the Default Connection Type from Charge Only to Media Sync / Disk Drive / HTC Sync (after installing the HTC Sync software - NOT the HTC Sync Manager, which apparently only supports the newer phones) to no avail. I've tried them all, and they all have the same issue. I've done this both with and without USB debugging checked, and with "Unknown Sources" ("allow installation of non-Market apps") checked. I've also tried uninstalling Sync, installing Sync Manager, trying again (no change), and then reversing it (uninstalling Manager, and reinstalling Sync) - again, no change. Sync does not see the phone while connected and in "HTC Sync" mode via the Default Connection Type (or anything else).
When I plug the phone in to the PC the PC shows a "USB Device not recognized" and sometimes I will get a "Driver did not install successfully" message. Device Manager is showing one Unknown Device with a "!" issue under the USB controllers category I'm assuming is the problem. There is also nothing showing up under the Disk Drives category in my Device Manager other than my hard disk, even though some of the guides I'm looking at say I should have something related to the phone in there.
I've tried connecting it with 2 different USB cables, just in case the one that came with it was not fully functional. I've used the second cable for data transfer in the past, so it should work. No difference.
I've restarted several times, with and without the microSD card installed. I've tried unmounting and remounting the card as well, no difference.
Am I missing some kind of Win7 drivers for the Incredible 2 that are not installed automatically and/or with the HTC Sync install? I've seen some references and links to HTC drivers that are apparently not on the HTC site, but I am very leery of downloading an .EXE from a random website and just installing it to see if it works. I'd think if this was necessary, it would be on the HTC site.
Anyone know what gives here? I can't think of anything else to try.
Am I a complete newb here, or is this potentially an issue with the refurb'ed phone?
Thank you very much for any assistance!
I use the driver linked on the revolutionary.io site (http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe) and I have never had an issue.

update
Hi there.
I attempted this, but still no change. Do you know where this installs the drivers to, so I might try to manually point the Device Manager "Unknown Device" to them?
When I try to update the driver via Device Manager, however, it is telling me the following:
"Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
'Unknown Device'
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)"
Thank you for any further assistance or ideas.
Doesn't matter where you place them but you'll need to go to control panel/system/device manager find the device with the issue and select update driver.... Then it should be recognized

OP - do you have any other USB device drivers for other smartphone(s) installed on your PC? If so, uninstall all of them and reboot it clean.
Assumed that you are running VZW stock software - phone isn't rooted ?
Is your HTC Installer running this version - 3.0.0.007 - that's mine (have it running on W7 Pro and Ultimate on desktop & 2 laptop, no problems for me - I also have it running Win 8.
Uninstall HTC Installer & reboot - without connecting the phone. Turn off firewall & antivirus on your PC temporary, reconnect the phone & follow the prompts to reinstall HTC drivers. Once it's done, disconnect the phone & power down the computer.
Restart the PC and then reconnect the DI2 to it, hopefully - it will recognize the phone and allow you to connect & recognize the mSD card for data transfer, etc.
Please post any specific error messages as you see them. Good luck.
A common cause of "unrecognized USB device" is a bad cable. Try another. Or, try a different USB port on your PC.
