[Q] Still Can't connect to Win7 PC (driver issues?) - Verizon Droid Incredible 2

Hi there.
I picked up a refurbed Incredible 2 (running 2.3.4) and am trying to get it to connect to PC so I can move files across between the PC and either internal memory and/or microSD cards. I'm having no luck on Windows 7.
I changed the Default Connection Type from Charge Only to Media Sync / Disk Drive / HTC Sync (after installing the HTC Sync software - NOT the HTC Sync Manager, which apparently only supports the newer phones) to no avail. I've tried them all, and they all have the same issue. I've done this both with and without USB debugging checked, and with "Unknown Sources" ("allow installation of non-Market apps") checked. I've also tried uninstalling Sync, installing Sync Manager, trying again (no change), and then reversing it (uninstalling Manager, and reinstalling Sync) - again, no change. Sync does not see the phone while connected and in "HTC Sync" mode via the Default Connection Type (or anything else).
When I plug the phone in to the PC the PC shows a "USB Device not recognized" and sometimes I will get a "Driver did not install successfully" message. Device Manager is showing one Unknown Device with a "!" issue under the USB controllers category I'm assuming is the problem. There is also nothing showing up under the Disk Drives category in my Device Manager other than my hard disk, even though some of the guides I'm looking at say I should have something related to the phone in there.
I've tried connecting it with 2 different USB cables, just in case the one that came with it was not fully functional. I've used the second cable for data transfer in the past, so it should work. No difference.
I've restarted several times, with and without the microSD card installed. I've tried unmounting and remounting the card as well, no difference.
Am I missing some kind of Win7 drivers for the Incredible 2 that are not installed automatically and/or with the HTC Sync install? I've seen some references and links to HTC drivers that are apparently not on the HTC site, but I am very leery of downloading an .EXE from a random website and just installing it to see if it works. I'd think if this was necessary, it would be on the HTC site.
Anyone know what gives here? I can't think of anything else to try.
Am I a complete newb here, or is this potentially an issue with the refurb'ed phone?

I use the driver linked on the revolutionary.io site (http://downloads.unrevoked.com/HTCDriver3.0.0.007.exe) and I have never had an issue.

I attempted this, but still no change. Do you know where this installs the drivers to, so I might try to manually point the Device Manager "Unknown Device" to them?
When I try to update the driver via Device Manager, however, it is telling me the following:
"Windows encountered a problem installing the driver software for your device.
windows found driver software for your device but encountered an error while attempting to install it.
'Unknown Device'
Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems (Code 43)"
Thank you for any further assistance or ideas.

Doesn't matter where you place them but you'll need to go to control panel/system/device manager find the device with the issue and select update driver.... Then it should be recognized

OP - do you have any other USB device drivers for other smartphone(s) installed on your PC? If so, uninstall all of them and reboot it clean.
Assumed that you are running VZW stock software - phone isn't rooted ?
Is your HTC Installer running this version - 3.0.0.007 - that's mine (have it running on W7 Pro and Ultimate on desktop & 2 laptop, no problems for me - I also have it running Win 8.
Uninstall HTC Installer & reboot - without connecting the phone. Turn off firewall & antivirus on your PC temporary, reconnect the phone & follow the prompts to reinstall HTC drivers. Once it's done, disconnect the phone & power down the computer.
Restart the PC and then reconnect the DI2 to it, hopefully - it will recognize the phone and allow you to connect & recognize the mSD card for data transfer, etc.
Please post any specific error messages as you see them. Good luck.

A common cause of "unrecognized USB device" is a bad cable. Try another. Or, try a different USB port on your PC.

PC can't recognize Desire

Searched other similar topics but not exactly what i was looking for, so here it goes.
My Desire won't connect to my PC. It asks for connection type (charge only etc.) but when i choose Sync or Disk Drive, my PC can't recognize them. I'm using Wind XP 32-bit and latest HTC Sync. I have already tried all USB ports, un/installing HTC Sync and different versions of it. Tried closing antivirus during install and during connecting. When i connect to PC, under device manager it shows Android Phone->Android Composite ADB Interface
I know that phone and cable is fine, because they work on my laptop with win 7 64-bit.
I'm going crazy, HTC help is also useless, in third letter they finaly understood my problem and all they suggested to do was close antivirus and try all USB ports. Please help me.

It's clearly a driver problem.
Enter device manager, in "view" choose "show hidden devices". Then uninstall every driver for the desire (in "disk drives", "storage volume", and in "universal serial bus controllers" - that should be all the places they are; tip if you are not sure about some open properties and check what is says in "location" - should give you a hint).
Uninstall HTC sync again.
Restart win, plug the phone and let windows do the driver installing.
New hardware wizard can't find drivers.
Choose to search online then.
Set the desire in disk mode and connect it again to the PC.
If it again doesn't work, you have not fixed your drivers.
I had problem with windows recognizing my htc Desire when I was connecting to my front usb ports on Desktop computer.
Problem was solved when I connected to back usb port, directly to motherboard.
I see you said you tried all ports but had to share my experience just in case you didn't try the back ports.

How i choose to search online? can't find that option
And if i connect my desire to pc, under device manager i can see other devices->Android Phone (after unsucsesful driver install) and if i select to uninstall that, is that enough to delete all drivers? can't find them any other place.

This should not have been needed, though. As XP should recognize your device as a usb mass storage device.
And as for the second - have you deleted them while the desire is NOT connected as described in my first reply?
If you could not manage to fix it again, maybe you should reinstall XP, at least then the drivers will be okay...

install software automatically doesn't give me that option...
But i have noticed this wierd behavior before. Like some time agi when i bought a steering wheel, it was impossible to get it working (similar problem, can't find drivers) luckily i was just about to do format c and reinstall xp and after that, no problem, installed first time... Same thing even with memory sticks, USB TV sticks and so on. How come my pc just sort of "loses" or messes up the drivers?! But i'm not going to do a reinstall, just too much stuff i need in my pc.
Is there anything else you can recommend tring?

[Q] USB connection fails on 3 different PCs

I wanted to root my phone and flash a costum rom... unfortunately my DHD (2.2.1) is T-Mobile branded, so i had to create a goldcard in order to downgrade from 1.75.111.2 to 1.32. When it came to temproot it manually with cmd i had to plug my DHD into my PC in load only mode, usb debugging activated.
I knew already that my DHD wont recognize my PC or the other way round (i somehow broke it when i deleted the htcsync drivers.exe from my sd card), but i thought maybe it would somehow work in usb debugging mode.
Well, it didnt(phone not found).
i then focused on repairing my usb connection, so i tried it on 2 other pcs (mine is w7, the other ones are xp and win7) but it all failed
(xp asked for drivers, which i installed directly from htc.com today(on all pcs(plus i removed and reinstalled them all properly))/win7 did nothing/mine said that it fails to connect and that i should use a usb 2.0 port(well all ports are usb 2.0, i also tried usb3.0))
evertime i plugged my DHD in i was asked which connection i want to use, none worked, i also restarted my phone several times (usb connected and without) when i type in #7284# (or *#7284# i tried both) it says: connection failure or invalid mmi code
Finally i resetted my phone and did it all again! But it wont work!
please help me!
Hi...It looks like a driver issue...
If your drivers are installed correctly, in your win-7 Device manager it will show DHD.
I would suggest to Re-install HTC Sync from HTC website - Run it again and give it a try
doesnt work either.... win7 says the device does not run properly, my phone does nothin unusual...
i wonder if htc could fix the issue... this would be my last option
however i believe in you guys at xda!
how did you reset your phone?
Did you install the android SDK? Does adb recognize your phone? (run "adb devices", if your device is listed, everything should be fine)
On my win7-machine, the HTC-Software gives me an error message (along the lines of "phone doesn't respond" or something like that) but adb works nonetheless.
thank you for your answer but im afraid it didnt work... i installed the usb driver pack on sdk but i couldnt find it under sdk/usb driver..., however i found some files -> android/android-sdk/extras/google/usbdriver/amd64 -> usbdrivercoinstall2.dll... i tried to install this driver in hardware manager, and i tried to install an adb.exe which i found in my downgrade folder as a driver. but win7 said no driver installation is necessary the "best" drivers are already installed (win7 aint gonna install anything)
also my dhd is found under unkown device, -this device is deactivated because it made errors- "Dieses Gerät wurde angehalten, weil es Fehler gemeldet hat. (Code 43)"
well i deinstalled it and searched for new hardware, he now says the drivers are installed properly please restart however i neither see my sd card nor my devices name (instead unkown device with this little yellow triangle)
btw. for reset i used my android reset (settings -> sdcard -> reset)

Have the same issue. My DHD can be connected to the PC no other way than charge mode, no matter is usb debugging turned on or off. Tried 2 PCs with W7 and 1 PC with Ubuntu 10.04. This trouble appeared several days ago. Wipe didn't help. Thinking of re-installing firmware, but it seems like hardware problem. An engineer in our service center said it might be motherboard malfunction.
Some ways of solving this problem are described here: http://goo.gl/2eMcP But none of those solutions helped me. If anyone can help, please advise.
UPD: re-installing the firmware had no success - connection with PC failed. 95% hardware problem, will take it to service center.
Guys I know it's a stupid advice, but I had same problems (suddenly my connection with pc didn't work anymore): did you try to change usb cable?

tried 3 cables and 3 PCs
i just found a solution for me : i tried a forth pc (win7) freshly installed htcsync + android sdk + !downloaded! (not properly installed) adb drivers (which i surprisingly did not need) well i plugged my DHD in and he installed all drivers, but never asked for an adb driver. instead he had problems installing 7 different bluetooth drivers for my DHD (???)^^
it just worked for me this way (also worked for debugging mode + load only mode (for radio s-off/hboot s-off))

well it's not exactly a permanent solution just a temporal way to root my phone, but in worst case i think its nessesary to reinstall win7 on your pc....

[Q] Yet another "no more prompt" on the phone

Hi,
So before going on, I've now spent couple hours trying to fix this issue, looking for tips and threads without luck.
I'm using a rooted DHD, with an Affinity rom. It works perfectly fine.
Yesterday, a friend asked me to install a custom rom on his tablet, which I did.
I had to clean all my Android drivers because the tablet wouldn't be recognized properly by my computer (no ADB driver).
In the end it didn't help and I had to use a fastboot method, which ended well.
Now, my phone doesn't prompt me what I want to do when I plug it to my computer.
I, once again, clean the usb drivers, installed HTC Sync and all its dependencies but the software doesn't recognize my phone (I couldn't care less, but I suppose it's part of my "no prompt" problem).
Of course I tried with and without AV, firewall... No luck (and I think I rooted my phone with both them ON anyway). I tried other USB ports as well
If I plug the phone without HTC Sync and its drivers installed, Windows 7 installs 3 out of 4 drivers, the last being in this suite I suppose.
I tried using the drivers provided with the sdk, they're not for that missing driver.
With the suite installed, I end up with 2 new devices on my devices manager : one "Android USB Device" labeled "My HTC" and one "mobile device" labeled as "J:" (drive name) which means no ADB drivers.
Of course, USB debug and ask when connect are both ON. I tried turning them ON and OFF, but still no luck (except a new driver installation).
ADB drivers start to install as soon as uninstall the "HTC Drive Installer" component, which is weird.
So I don't really know what to do now except that it's driving me nuts as I cannot do anything else than charging the phone now.
Is this a case of "USB brick" ? The threads I read about it all talk about "stock roms".

It's a sense rom?
Sense roms have an option to permanently put the usb state to charging or storage, etc, without prompting you again. It's an option you tick, in the settings (usb connections, or usb sync maybe? sorry, I don't use sense).

"Hardware ID doesn't match" error when plugging phone in

Okay, this is the second time this error has popped up and it's starting to get on my nerves. Anytime I plug my phone into ANY USB port, and this is counting both 2.0 and 3.0 ports, I get the error bubble: Hardware ID Missing. Windows cannot identify the device plugged into the SAMSUNG Mobile USB Composite Device." Honestly, this is beyond irritating.
For one, I am not going to reinstall Windows 7. That's too much hassle for this. Second, ever since someone plugged their Droid into my USB cable so they could charge up their phone, this message started appearing. I tried to reinstall drivers (Samsung driver exe said it couldn't install), uninstall, disable, etc etc, but finally managed to get the damn computer to read it when I stuck it in the 3.0 USB port. Now, just 10 minutes ago, I plug the phone in, I get that error, on a 3.0 USB port.
So, now I have no idea what is going on, nor how to fix it. I've tried searching, but there are no answers. Or, the possible "solutions" don't even work even remotely close.
I could really use some help on this. And, again, please do not mention "Reinstall Windows". That's just too much of a hassle and I'm not going to do that.

I had the same issue what ended up fixing it for me was watching when I plugged the phone in after a clean driver install and stopping Windows from downloading and installing an updated driver. Dont know if its the same for you but that fixed it for me. I was really frustrated by it and found no help either.

definitely don't need to reinstall windows or do a restore. But just to be sure, you don't have kies installed right? Seems to cause problems.if there's no kies installed, go into the device manager and find your phone whatever it's listed as right click and uninstall. Check the little box that says, "delete the driver software for this device". do this for any devices relating to yours. Including the stuff under modems,ports,USB controllers.and tick that box that delete driver software for this device every time you uninstall something. Now, not saying it's necessary but wouldnt hurt, reboot the pc. Then with your phone unplugged, reinstall the Samsung drivers for the phone. Now to make sure windows doesn't DL its own drivers,disconnect from the internet and plug the phone back in. Should be all good.
I won't do a system restore, that won't do anything. Not to mention it would erase some programs that were installed (not related to phone). So, not doing that. Also, my computer will not automatically update any drivers or any thing else, as I have it set to manual mode.
And, I do not have Kies installed. It never worked for me properly, when it came to driver installation. I've done the "go into device manager" bit many times before, it still likes to play the "Hardware ID doesn't match" card. Drivers won't install either. I don't know what it is, but damn this is the most stubborn thing I've ever encountered.
i've post this in other forums today. what i do to get it working is i toggle USB debugging and try it out, then start toggling the ptp and mtp until it works. the combo that works for me is turn on debug, plug in computer, unplug, turn off debug, plug in. if it doesnt work then i toggle back and forth MTP and PTP. 5 tries at most, for me. Also, i did a nandroid back to my oem ICS that was 2 weeks old and just rooted. the problem is worse there. i'm using freegsmr6 with trinity kernel on Tmo. hope it helps.

Yeah that whole "Hardware ID missing" was an irritating situation. This is what I recommend as far as making it work.
1. Plug in.
2. When you get the error message, I think its because of a conflict with the ADB interface. Go to Settings, Developer Options, and check off USB Debugging.
3. Plug in once again and it should work. If not, try toggling between Camera and MTP.

I always get that error as well with my SGS 3. I have to reinstall Kies everytime it does that which is annoying.. ANyone has a permanent solution about this?
Fix for me was...
1-plug in phone. Get the hardware ID message. Leave phone plugged in.
2- open device manager. Click on. Android Phone and Uninstall Samsung Android ADB Interface. Also check the "delete software driver" when the dialog box shows.
3-still in device manager. Scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controllers. Uninstall Samsung Mobile USB Composite Device.
4-unplug phone.
5-reboot pc.
6-install SAMSUNG USB drivers from their site or from here

2. Download the latest Kies, specific to your S3.
3. Download Samsung USB drivers 1.4.6.0 (I've tried newer versions but they all failed)
4. REBOOT
5. Disconnect from internet (VERY IMPORTANT!!! - forcing Windows to install local drivers ONLY)
6. With the phone disconnected, install Kies + USB drivers downloaded in steps 2,3
7. Connect the phone and let Windows install the drivers.
8. Reestablish the internet connection.
I've done just that, I've connected my S3 to the PC several times, I've also rebooted twice and I've never seen that stupid message again - while of course everything works as expected.
:good::good:4 days later, several times rebooted (phone and PC), several connections with Kies and I have NEVER seen that error again - it works!!
UPDATE!! (Oct.11.2012)
After a few Kies updates and going through various ROM's:
- the procedure listed above works 100% but a few steps are just not needed (redundant) - see bellow
- the problem is mostly caused by Windows "forcefully" trying to install its own drivers, rather than allowing Samsung's suggested.
- Samsung's fault is providing "updated" drivers that don't always work (hence, use the suggested 1.4.6.0 drivers)
- Following EVERY Kies update, DISCONNECT from internet before plugging your phone (otherwise you'll have to go through this, AGAIN).
Some suggested here that plugging the phone into a different USB port (without disconnecting from internet) would be the culprit - which happens to be true, but as a mere effect, not the cause: every time an unknown device is plugged into a different USB port, Windows is trying to download/install the appropriate drivers if it doesn't recognize the hardware - and there you are again.
So, the simplified procedure becomes:
1. Not needed - leave Kies installed, as is - no harm at all
2. N/A
3. YES
4. Not (always) required
5. MUST
6. MUST
7. MUST
8. Yes
Furthermore, if still interested in connecting your I747(M) as UMS (USB mass storage) the solution presented here works. I tested it myself - read my comment on this post for the very few existing hiccups.

Have you tried just installing the drivers directly from Samsung? That is all I did when I had problems and it worked.

For someone experiencing the "hardware ID missing" error, just reinstalling the drivers won't do anything. Like many others, I've been banging my head trying to solve this for quite some time; the suggested steps are truly a compilation of successful ideas and trials mingled with tons of frustration, coming from my own experience as well as from many different people and forums.
If, on the other hand, you had a different type of connectivity issues - without this error, then, yes, reinstalling the drivers is Samsung's recommendation.

Just wanted to say thank you. Did this and the last 2 days, works everytime. I made sure that after the first time I plugged the phone in after doing all this, and the screen pops up asking what I wanted to do, made sure to check the box for "do this everytime" and then choose the view folder option or whatever that is.

One thing I have tried which might help others - I had the Android Developers toolkit installed on my machine, which I've removed and I also removed the HTC Sync software which was for my old desire.
Rebooted, installed the SG Toolkit (can't remember which post I found it in) and then chose option one after selecting firmware to install drivers.
I cancelled the "Windows Updates" bit of the driver detection and it found the first item, and had "item disconnected" for the remaining three.
Unplugged and plugged back in and voila it works.
This worked for approx 5 mins and then stopped, however I did all the above with debugging on, debugging is now off and all seems well (touch wood). However looking at putting on a different kernal to expose storage as mass storage and also get around cifs issues.
Hope this helps someone.

For moment i change to camera PTP and it pops up, so at least i can use it for now.

This worked for approx 5 mins and then stopped, however I did all the above with debugging on, debugging is now off and all seems well (touch wood). However looking at putting on a different kernal to expose storage as mass storage and also get around cifs issues.

The Android Developers toolkit DOES install the USB drivers 1.4.6.0 - which seems to be the ONLY one that works, BUT the rest of the steps suggested in my previous post are needed in order to get rid of the problem - otherwise the fix is just temporary.
Re-loading OS drivers corrected issue.

I removed the updates to Kies on my Note and uninstalled the Kies update on the PC which is what started this issue of the OS not recognizing the device and then a fresh driver load for my phone from the Samsung site. Worked Perfectly, Thanks!

[Q] HTC DESIRE 816 USB driver problem

Hi, My HTC Desire 816 is about 2 weeks old. I've had problems connecting the device to my personal computer (running Windows 7). I've reinstalled HTC Sync Manager several times, turned on USB Debugging, and even switched cables and ports but to no avail. When I try to update the driver, Windows faces an error saying it's unauthorized to install the driver for the device. However, the device connects perfectly to my office laptop also running Windows 7. I am able to transfer files on that system but not on my personal computer. The HTC website also has been of no help, except for asking to reinstall HTC Sync Manager. Please help. Thank You.

Tethering & Internet Pass Through
I have installed the latest version of HTC Sync Manager for my Desire 816 on Windows 7 and tried it on Windows XP as well.
When I connect my device for the first time after that,the drivers install automatically.
My system is recognizing the phone as a mass storage device.
But when I select the 'Internet pass through' connection type, it doesnt connect and after some time gives the error as
"Either you dont have the latest HTC drivers or ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,please get latest drivers by intalling latest HTC sync manger from the website"
I have tried to uninstall and re-install the HTC sync manager several times but had no success with Internet Pass through.
Might be the issue with the drivers,cant understand the reason.
Can anyone help me out with this.

I am pretty sure that you guys have already tried all those, but just wanted to remind you all again as a benefit of doubt. HTC sync manager will install the required drivers usually, but in some cases due to firewall or any antivirus systems within our computer, only few files will get installed and other will get blocked. The best way to tackle this problem is to follow the below steps
1. Uninstall the HTC related drivers if installed partially previously.
2. Reboot the system - which is must
3. Then turn of your firewall or internet security or antivirus on your computer for 10 min or more
4. Connect the HTC 816 to computer using the different USB port that is not used before. (Every new USB port needs installing drivers. So hopefully this might help)
5. Install the HTC sync manager
Hopefully it should recognise. If not, try following the same steps with different USB cable.
