Custom Modem - Epic 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I don't know much about modems but I was wondering if they can be customized.... not a noob but not a dev either....
Sent from my Evo Killer using TapaTalk

So far there haven't been any, and I suspect a custom modem would not work.

It would be a cool concept though right
Sent from my Evo Killer using TapaTalk

I guess, but I can't really see a use for it.

they are closed source, which means not likely...

The way the phones talk to the towers is proprietary, I think. That's why you're best left to odin modems until you find the one that talks best with your local towers. It's not undoable, though.

Verizon roms to sprint roms..

I seem to always get in trouble for making a thread, or it goes unnoticed. just a question on how much work would it be to port over a Verizon gnex rom to sprint gnex? I'm not dev at all but I imagine it would only be a radio and some other small things. Again I could be missing the big picture, I just got my sprint gnex yesterday and I can't wait for highly custom roms! If its not to advanced I'd love to take a crack at it if anyone would be willing to teach me how
Mods move it to wherever you want....

Too me it just seems that something needs to be done with the radio as of now flashing a verizon rom works fine except for the radio which is data and whatnot. As soon as they get aosp running with mms fixed and find the radio so if the radio gets borked then I am sure those developers of the verizon roms could hopefully just add compatibility with sprint.
That is all I know as of now
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
why would you want that? the sprint rom is better
What makes it better though? Aren't they literally the exact same phone just different networks? I'm glad its better if it is I almost bought the Verizon one hahah

One is not better then the other
In fact like i said above Verizon roms almost fully work on ours except the radio, once they get that fixed i am sure we can share roms with verizon people but who knows? Our device is still brand new and will be a little bit til we have as many roms as verizons forum
BTW don't flash verizons roms until there is a radio fix some poor people have broken radios and are waiting as people are looking to fix it.
just in case you were thinking about flashing one
There is nothing superior about Sprint roms that isn't remedied by AOSP.
Now if you are talking about zip roms, tsk, tsk.
Those are a crime against humanity...er, the Nexus The device is open enough to not warrant such a thing.

They use differen radio frequencies, which the CPUs are programmed for. They are incompatible. That's what causes the data problems. That's just about the only difference in terms of hardware.

so here is a question:
Once we have the cdma radio pulled and mms working would there be anyway that verizon roms with a little modification to the radio and whatnot to get them working easily. or do they have to redo the whole rom special?

The only real difference from Sprint to Verizon are the ril props outside of the mms issue.
So, no, not hard, but just as easy for the devs to simple compile for Sprint.

Boost rom data error's

This discussion is only for user's who have had their E4GT flashed to Boost.
I have tried almost all the roms. Including the Samsung Boost leaks. When I'm on all the ICS roms I get a data error then update profile and it's gone for a while but comes back often. I have been running Calk's 3.0 GB and never have a data error.
Of course, that is why my daily is the aforementioned Calk 3.0.
Anyone have any similar experiences?

And how about 4G any to loose it when flash a sprint rom???
bumping this up because I have the same wondering mind as acrown.
Contract is up with sprint, would like to move to boost, but the Sprint S2 is cheaper than Boost's
Wondering if I could tinker with a Sprint version on a Boost ROM.
Guess no one has gotten that creative yet? Too soon?

I've used both paranoid Rom 2.2 (which I'm currently using) and the stock ff18 Rom and have never had the 3g stop or anything related to that and I'm on boost. I also wrote an updated guide on how to COMPLETELY flash that can be found somewhere in the older flash to boost thread in this section.

In order to have working 4g you need to clone or change your 4g mac address to a working active sprint address or a clear mac. Reference this thread for more info.

Your will not lose 4g once you have done this by just changing roms since this setting sticks.

Have tried both the Boost leaks and many of the Sprint roms. Currently I use Calk's gb 3.0 since it doesn't give me any data error's. Since I don't know anyone who has gotten a E4GT from Boost I have no way of knowing what if any the difference is. I created this thread because I wanted to know if Boost user's were getting data error's on ics. Still haven't gotten any feedback on that.

More specifically since both replies relate.... Boost has this with 4G now...I mean same network essentially right? I would THINK in my tiny little mind that the need for a full BOOST flash plus additional 4G mac tinkering may not be completely necessary outside changing some minor things? ...I guess that's more where I was headed with that question, but it will end up rooted and flashed anyway...
Rigel, I'll move my wandering mind to a new thread if you prefer.

I am too scared to flash and try...its less scary to post a new thread ask you to try...haha. If a devo could shed some light or a brave soul could "test" it that would be great.

You can flash it. If you want to lose your radio. Unfortunately even if the 7100 rom does not include radio we have significant differences in our hardware that causes the radio not to work. Most likely something in the ril or kernel I believe (I could be wrong about the reasons). We dont have an AOSP kernel for the 7105 or tmo version.
Thank you sir... man, I really want that ROM. Was using XquiziT's ROM but the was having a couple problems with it and now the future for it looks bleak. (What I liked so much was the AOSP parts added in) Going to give Saurom a go now I guess.

we need some devs solely working on what needs to be done for porting from one device to another. the fact that the ROM even functions on our device without modification should be a decent indicator of how close we are.
look in the US SGS3 section, 4 variants all with small differences and porting roms between those 4 is a piece of cake.
if someone could make a stand alone CWM.zip that we flash after a N7100 ROM that gave us back the radio it would be perfect. then we could just run any N7100 rom we wanted, no porting needed.

well as much as i love the note 2 if we don't get any aosp love soon ill probably swap devices with my wife. at least her sg3 has cm10/aokp. again not complaining, i just hope development picks up. i was thinking about getting a nexus 4 to tide me over but i hate lg. if anything i still hope the note 2 see's android 4.2.
I am curious. I have had CM/AOKP for years with my other phones. With this one seems a lot of the features I really love are here. What do you feel is missing from TW that AOKP/CM gives you. I am not a fan of TW colors but overall it is good (and I xan theme colors away). Only thing I really miss from AOKP is the wigets popup from nav bar.
Aosp is lighter and for me runs better.

Personally I really look forward to having a ROM with mass storage support. Since Google removed it from Android, I am no longer able to connect my phone to Linux for easy transfer of files and have to use all kinds of alternatives.
Not sure it can't be done on a TW based ROM, but CM/AOKP ROMs seem to more commonly introduce it like the one mentioned in this thread.

I second the motion for USB mass storage functions. Maybe wi-fi direct or other technology will supersede it, but it would be nice to have the capabilities meantime.

This I can understand I really wish google made ums/mass storage an option. I understand why they went with ums but options are always nice.
Reasons why I think they went UMS
1) ability to keep sdcard mounted while connected to computer
2) ability to mount /sdcard on /data/media making the internal sdcard the same as the internal data memory
3) most people people use windows
4) the option to turn it on/off may confise some people.
The only one I disagree with is number 4. Stupidd people will find a way to be stupid no matter how much you coddle them.

[IDEA] Port international firmware/ROM's to Sprint Note 2?

Considering the similarities between the domestic variants of the Note 2 and their international counterparts, would anyone be willing to test some of the success that the folks over in the AT&T forum have had with porting the international N7100/N7105 firmware/ROM's over to the Sprint Note 2
Check out these two threads over in the AT&T forum and see what you all think:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2016575
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2018411
The basic gist of the procedure is to use a custom recovery like CWM or TWRP to flash a stock N7100/N7105 firmware, and then flash your carrier specific modem/kernel.
Why would anyone want to do this? Well, for starters, you would benefit from built-in stock-supported tethering, and a few other features that carriers disable (YMMV). But mainly this means that the domestic versions of the Note 2 can benefit from the development of the international versions! So, when the latest version of Android comes out for the rest of the world, we aren't stuck here waiting for our carrier to catch up to everyone else...
So what do you all think? Anyone willing to try?
Clarification: Just so everyone is on the same page here, I want to stress that, while this process is successful on both the AT&T and T-Mobile GN2's, this is VERY dangerous if you do not know what you are doing. I would NOT recommend anyone try this unless you are confident in your abilities to recover from a brick situation.
Again, if you are even REMOTELY interested in trying this out on your own, don't even think about bothering with it unless you absolutely know what you are doing! I take no responsibility for any bricks that come from someone trying this without the proper experience and know-how. You have been warned!
it works on the ATT variant because it and the international are both GSM. We are CDMA, i doubt that it would be as easy. Using verizon ROMs might be a different story though.

See, I'm not so sure. At least this time around, the radio's are pretty much the only major differences, and those can be governed by the kernel and modem.bin, so if anyone's willing to try it, it could be well worth a try!

There has to be, at least, a dev developed tool that will convert 1 notes rom to another. That way a dev can create a rom, then easily spread it to all devices.
I can't imagine making a script or modifying a kitchen to output for the slight differences between phone would be that difficult.

You know, I'm not even a Sprint subscriber. I don't own the Sprint GN2. I have absolutely nothing to gain by sharing an idea with all of you. If you think it's a stupid idea, fine, but there's no reason to be an @$$hole about it either.
Now this could turn out one of two ways. Either you're right, and it was a stupid idea, for not working on CDMA GN2's, but at least we tried and now we know for sure -OR- my idea works, maybe with a little finagling, but still possible, and now (with some help) I've just opened up the door for domestic users to take advantage of the development being done around the world; something you've rarely, if ever, been able to do... You're welcome.
So yeah, don't be an @$$hole.

Should he lie and say your idea is good? would that make you feel better? It won't work. The partitions between the Note variants are different. It not the same as the S3's. Just because you don't understand that doesn't make him an asshole. Also if you are going to curse people out, have the balls to actually spell it correctly

Ask anyone that has ever flashed a rom from a different carrier how it worked out for them... Only result I have ever heard of is brick. So forgive me for not kissing your ass because of your stupid idea. The people that are capable of porting roms have either already thought of it and it's not that easy, or its out of the realm of possibility at this point. So all your doing is putting useless thoughts into the heads of people who won't know any better and end up effing their phones. So go suck a boner

geez enough guys. plenty of useful stuff has been pulled from the multiple variants. thinking outside the box is how we get what we have and grow the community and our devices.
it can't (or would be difficult to) do it
no reason to rip each other apart over it.

This is posible but is not like flashing att rom and putting sprint modem. You got to configure the rom to make it cdma, I remember back in the htc evo days they made t mobile my touch compatible and others htc European with sense 2.1 compatible, only issue was no 4G

Custom Roms?

Can anyone tell me if and when we will be seeing custom Roms like CM12 , MIUI, or Pac Rom? I'm not asking for dates I'm just asking if someone has development in the works, is there a reason we haven't seen anything yet. Is there something in the firmware or software that is preventing development? I just got my s6 a few weeks ago and before that I had a lg g3 but I remember from previous samsung phones I've had that we had to be s-off in order to keep root. With the OFE update in the development section it has a

Place where u can shut off s-off. So if anyone can answer my questions I'd really appreciate it. Sorry about the 2 different posts. I sent the first part on accident so I had to finish it with another post.

S-OFF is for HTC phones.
Oh ok. What I meant then was OEM unlocking. It says it unlocks the bootloader. Does that mean anything as far as development purposes. Is that a good thing. What early will that mean for our phones. Sorry about my first post. I've had many different kinds of phones. Each had different ways to root and tweak the phones.

In before the burn...
I suggest putting this in the q&a section

I suggest not posting this at all and just getting it removed.....
Thanks for the nice comments people. It was just a question. You don't have to be so rude. Just delete it then.

Actually, i thought this was a good question. No asking for a hard date or anything, just an honest question asking if there is a technical hurdle delaying development on this device. I was also curious about this.
It's because we're on an Exynos chip this time around, not a Qualcomm.

That has nothing to do with it. That only means it'll be hard as hell getting an AOSP ROM (CM, Pacman, etc.).

Yup nothing to do with the chip. It's the fact that 5.1.1 is a pain in the a$$ for devs but I have no doubt they will figure some out soon.
Thanks guys for the responses. My next question is how come all the other s6 phones from different carriers have all kinds of roms? Aren't those s6's the same as sprints?

No, almost each variant is different. The sprint variant is a little trickier.
I was wondering if you can tell me the difference? Is this something that sprint did or something samsung did to the phone. Don't they all have that new chip in the instead of the qualcom or however it's spelled chip? Does the sprint phone being trickier to get custom Roms for mean that one carriers phone is better than anothers. I'm just curious. I like to know what's up with my phone so if someone asks me I can tell them and I sound like I know what im talking about.

It has nothing to do with one carrier being better than any other. I'm positive it's a couple of factors such as the fact that 5.1.1 is a butthead for devs. Also, the previously mentioned development knowledge of exynos but along with that Sprint is as CDMA carrier which tends to be as little trickier for porting/development.
