Recovering dead Defy from Recovery - Defy General

Okay, so I backed up and tried to use CM7, flashing it with a Recovery I don't remember the name. It looked a lot like Clockwork's Recovery. The bar didn't advance, it just said out of nowhere that flashing was done (I thought it was weird since it was too quick)
When I turned my phone on, the motorola logo would show up and nothing happen. I researched and found the way to get into the Recovery. Now I have these options:
reboot system now
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
wipe partition
This isn't the same Recovery screen so there's no way to restore the backup, and I can't find a way to flash something new. What should I do?
::EDIT::
There's no clear indication but I take it I should try this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=853674), since I can also get to the bootloader, am I right? Don't let me brick this phone further.

Yea, I was thinking if I'm on this situation as well. Since my SonyEricsson X10mini pro has this custom recovery installed where you can boot into it by repeatedly pressing the back button(even if bootloop occured), and you're safe to restore if anything goes wrong with your phone during modding. But this CWMrecovery doesn't have that as it only accessible via the app menu to boot into recovery, so if Defy fail to boot then you're stucked, end up you need to flash sbf file again as there's no restoring option under stock recovery.

Does your led turn blue for about a second while booting? it should do it while on the motorola logo.
If so press Vol.down with the led still blue and you'll enter custom recovery.
If still you can't do anything i guess the easiest thing to do would be to flash another SBF in the bootloader.

It didn't flash the blue LED, so I flashed another SBF, and it works fine now. Thanks guys. I'll try flashing CM7 again today.

Problem with Desire

Hey guys,
I went to flash a new stable build of Froyo on my Desire this morning.
And i backed up using Clockwork, and then the ROM all installed fine. But once the phone had booted up, it stayed on the custom boot logo, despite the keypad lighting up, the green charge LED coming on and me being able to lock and unlock the phone.
So i figured that this was a problem and went to back to restore my old ROM and carry on like i have done many times before. However once i have booted into Clockwork, and gone to the recovery section, i select my most recent backup and the device then says "No Files Found" in the recovery zip.
And when i try to install update.zip from my SDCard the device just flashes up with installation text for about 2 seconds then vanishes and goes back to the clockwork menu having done nothing
What can i do?
i wouldnt worry about it too much
your phone completely works and youre not restricted of any access
seeing that clockwork is not finding any files have you tried making a new backup?
have you tampered with the recovery lately?
if recovery is not finding any files then maybe there is a problem with it, and if i were you i'd reroot my phone with unrevoked to re-install recovery.
if your recovery actually just does not work it could mean that the recovery image is corrupt, this can be fixed by installing a RUU (note that this will unroot your phone but re-install the recovery image).
if this is not the case then im sure im soon to be corrected by someone more knowledgeable than me
Well, i wiped the Cache and Data and now the phone boots up and functions fine, however both mobile internet and Wi-Fi both dont work, but i figure this is just the rom i am using.
So i'm just gonna reroot, sideload clockwork and what not and then try putting the Desire HD rom on it haha.
Thanks for the help

[Q] EVO will not load into recovery after root?

Hi all. First let me begin by saying I'm NOT new to rooting and I have a pretty good knowledge of what I'm doing.
Here is my problem. I WAS rooted before, and used Rom Manager/Clockwork to preform Nandroid backups etc.
I recently received a replacement EVO (cracked housing) and wanted to root again, which I have, with SU permissions and S-OFF using the latest version of unrEVOked. (this is after the December update to 3.70 with hboot 2.10) No problem with rooting, however when I want to do a nandriod back up, thru Rom Manager, (or alternative methods) I get stuck on the white EVO boot screen. I CAN NOT boot into recovery? Weird right?
EDIT: When I try to enter recovery in any fashion, it hangs on the white EVO screen...forever until I do a battery pull.
EDIT: Sorry, I CAN enter bootloader, however once there, I attempt to enter "recovery" and it bounces me back to the menu. This happens both via ROM Manager and the traditional way of "POWER" button and "Vol Down".
EDIT (again): Okay..I used Amon RA to preform a nandroid back up,(which worked) and now I'm stuck in a bootloop! Ugh! Trying to restore my Nanadroid backup using RA..hopefully that works and I can revert back to Clockwork.
Jesus...
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks!

Let me know what you do to fix it. I'm just going to put the 3.7 RUU on sd card and restore to default? Here is the link. Hopefully this works.
http://goo-inside.me/evo/stock/RUU/
I have the exact same problem!!!! I cannot boot into recovery! It throws me back to the main hboot screen. It freezes when I try to do a recovery and I need to return this stupid phone because it keeps freezing and re-starting on it's own and I've tried flashing the oem rom many times already. I have "s-off" and Sprint will know I've rooted the phone ... please help!!
I just get stuck with the evo screen but like all of you i can not get to recovery... any ideas
Do you guys have working ROMs on your phones and just can't get into recovery? Or can you not boot up at all?
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G with Tapatalk
Looks like your recovery didn't flash. Put this file on the root of your sdcard, boot into the bootloader and select yes to update, the reboot. This installs CWM 3.0+.
I'm in a similar situation after initially using Unrevoked, and I've tried flashing AmonRa and Clockwork from a PC36IMG.zip. Neither has gotten me a recovery screen.
Beyond that I can't seem to get a ROM to boot more than once. I can install ROMs with varying degrees of success, but invariably a reboot leads to the phone simply hanging at the white HTC EVO 4G screen. Flashing a new ROM generally works. Once. But then I'm constantly afraid of my phone rebooting for any reason, and I know it'll mean that I have to wipe the bastard and start all over again.
Any suggestions on the recovery issue? Perhaps fixing that will fix my reboot problems.

Try installing clean, wipe everything. With TB, backup the apps, ect. When you restore, restore only apps and data, not system settings.
Just to be sure I 'wipe everything' properly, which steps are you suggesting? Should I choose Clear Storage from the bootloader menu?
Just for clarification, I've tried to RUU several times and it has not fixed the issue.
I just used a modified HBOOT to allow me to erase my recovery, system, and userdata partitions via fastboot. After that, I flashed AmonRa 2.3 in Bootloader and it worked! I now have a working AmonRa recovery. I'm attempting to flash CM7 now, and I'll let you know if that works.
I can't take credit for thinking of this, I used someone else's guide, but I'll happily post the software and the steps if people are interested.
The fix was apparently temporary. The attempt to flash CM7 led to my Evo hanging at the white screen after rebooting.
The only way I've managed to boot into a ROM is pretty crazy... I flash the 3.70 RUU from a PC36IMG.zip version at bootloader, then I flash clockworkmod, then I flash SprintLover's ROM. If I flash in that sequence, I can get SprintLover's to work, but it will hang at the white evo 4g screen if I reboot. It's insane!
Anyone have any advice? This **** is bananas.

What I have done so far:
(the good):
#1 I used the "clear storage" from hboot and it works.
#2 I re-flashed "RUU_SuperSonic_S_Sprint_WWE_3.70.651.1_Radio_2.15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed" from my PC via USB and this works too! It gets the phone back to factory settings wiping out everything and booting up normally.
(the bad):
#1 The phone still freezes and turns off sporadicly.
#2 I have lost root BUT the HBOOT screen still shows security is off (S-OFF) so still I cannot return the phone to Sprint!
(the ugly):
#1 From the "HBOOT" screen I choose "FASTBOOT" which takes me to the "FASTBOOT" menu, from there I choose "BOOTLOADER" and it throws me back to the "FASTBOOT" menu creating an endless loop.
#2 From the "HBOOT" menu I choose "RECOVERY" and it re-starts but it than freezes at the white HTC EVO 4G screen. I then have to take the battery out to re-boot the phone. Again another loop!
Any Ideas or any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

http://unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/forever Jump down to Q&A and download the S-ON tool. You need to load up a recovery image, CWM or amon_ra and flash that ^ then re-run the 3.70 RUU and you should be set.

help Bricked 2ndinit problem+cm7

help
Ive managed to get it to:
Android Bootmenu <v0.9.1-defy>
and its given me some options
Boot, this has set default
normal sotck
2ndinit cm7
2nd boot cm7
go back
the recovery option has latest recovery
stable recovery
stock recovery
ive tried several options, but nothing appears to work.
, now i just want ot re-load my back up that i made with clockwork mod of my origanal set up
please someone help, as iom goign out soon, and i need a working device
I've faced a related problem with the custom recovery. The simplest way is to flash an eclair SBF and then upgrade to Froyo. Just flash the 2.34.0 Eclair an than restore your nandroid. I'm not sure what will happen with your personal data, because I just wiped it from the recovery and then used Titanium Backup and MyBackup to roll it back. Good luck!
Ive managed to get the boot menu ( black thing with white text) back, so hopefully theres a chance to re-load the sbf file, and it is recognised by a P.C when in that mode.
However I dont have access to my main p.c at the moment, so it will have to wait, and i will have to make do with my old sony ericsson phone for the time being.
Now im back, and at home, wiht my own P.C ive managed to solve the issue via the boot/flash menu screen.
I pulled hte battery and turned the phone on holding the volume up button, then plugged it into my P.C, where it recognised the phone.
i was then able to flash the nordic SBF file, and it works, again
So i used clockwork mod recovery to check that i could go back if needed and it worked
then oi re-flashed the nordic SBF, re-rooted the phone, installed 2ndinit, and then used the recovery to load cm7.zip.
now all is well, and im running CM7

Stuck on Google Screen after JB Update

Hi,
I've attempted the JB update
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1737899..
fastboot flash boot boot.img etc.. which said all was well..
But now find that my phone will not boot up, doesn't get past the Google and unlock screen.
I've tried all combinations of volume buttons, I can get to the fasboot menu where I can choose either Recovery Mode, Power Off, Start or Restart bootloader.
None of these appear to do anything, recovery goes to the google a screen followed by an Android on it's back with an exclamation mark over it.. then goes to the Google and unlocked icon screen and stays there...
I fear my phone is bricked... Please help..

1.) Your phone is far from bricked at all. You have access to the boot loader (i.e. the screen with the options). The recovery you're seeing is stock recovery. All you need to do is go into boot loader and fastboot flash recovername (CWM) and you will have your custom recovery back to wipe data and reinstall a rom or restore a nandroid backup
Mine is doing the same thing, weird thing is, it was working since yesterday on jellybean, it just randomly froze this morning and and now won't boot..
im currently at work so i don't have admin rights to do a fastboot flash..
any idea why it would randomly stop working when i havn't flashed anything on it besides the jb rom?
Sorted..
Thanks for the comments.. yeah i was over-reacting a bit there..
I downloaded the Galaxy Nexus Toolkit, got a stock rom form gopogle, flashed it.. back to normal, well, it will be after i restore the CWM backup i took.. phew..
Thanks again
Ian.
Still stuck
I'm also stuck in the same situation(google with the unlock screen). I fear I'm a little more stuck. I also can see the recovery/restartbootloader screen. However, everything I try still comes back to that same google screen and gets hung up. Need some help!
this has happened twice today and i think it from using volume+

Boot into recovery, wipe cache, Reboot

GNexus is Soft Bricked and Data is Deleted from internal Storage when reboot

So here is a little back history.
I just recently purchased a GNexus from Sprint
Unlocking Bootloader and flashing Twrp went Great.
Backing up original stock rom went great!
My First Issue
My problem started when I flashed a JB rom. I notice that the phone was taking extremely long to boat up. Stuck at JB Boot Screen for about 45mins. I immediately thought that okay. .maybe im missing some type of requirement or twrp needs to be updated. So I battery pulled my phone.Attempted to go back into recovery and restore my old stock backup. WIth that being said i found that TWRP is corrupted. I did another battery pull and tried once more (same results)
I did another battery pull and booted to the bootloader when I selected recovery this time a screen popped up that allowed you to a factory reset (It was not the original TWRP Screen) My idiotic mistake was that I choose yes which then deleted my nand backup. As you now see I have a nexus that does not have a rom installed
I have been able to successfully adb push twrp back to my phone and TWRP comes up when I boot into recovery.
Here comes my second issue.
When I adb push a rom to the sdcard it transfer fine. I have been told to reboot recovery when you adb push a file to it. Therefore I reboot the phone and boot back into recovery to find out that the rom is gone. I have even tried to just directly flash the rom when I transfer the rom to the phone via adb push. TWRP states that the rom installed successfully so i reboot and the phone is still at a softbrick stage where I just have the google logo and the unlock bootloader at the bottom. When I boot back into recovery the rom.zip is no where to be found.
I have tried recovering by using ODIN and successfully followed each step for the GNEXUS CDMA\LTE version. Once again upon reboot I still receive the google bootloop of death.
Can anyone help me get my phone back to normal I will truly appreciate. I don't believe I truly bricked my phone because of that fact that I can still boot into bootloader, recovery and ODIN mode.
Specs of my phone: (From Bootloader Screen)
Product Name - tuna
Variant - toro 23GB
HW Version - 14
Bootloader Version - PRIMELD02
Baseband Version - L700.FD02 CDMA - L700.FD02
Carrier info - None
Serial Number - (Do I have to list this?)
Signing - Production
Lock State - Unlock
Once again any help is truly appreciated. I only had this phone for one day.. lol only made 2 calls on it before I screwed it up  (On stock rom)
After you ODIN stock it will bootloop. You don't have a custom recovery anymore, but if you remove the battery and then do "powers and both volume keys and select recovery" In recovery you will see a android with a red X. Press "power and both volume keys again" This time you have android system recovery that's in blue. Choose "wipe data/factory reset" and "wipe cache partition" . Then "reboot system now" after all that's done. You phone will boot up to factory in 3-5 min.
Reread everything you said... First thing first get back on stock. I used Odin method. Then follow steps above as it will bootloop.

ok, i will try this.
Thanks
After trying what you stated above i was able to successfully return to stock.
Thanks again for your help.. It's funny how something so small can lead to hours of debugging and searching for the answers.
Hey look on the bright side....you won't make the same mistake again!
I made the mistake of flashing the Touch CWM last week and accidentally wiped my SD instead of System as I was trying to flash a new rom with a full wipe....I wasn't impressed!
So now I'm back to the non touch screen recovery which I'm used to and harder to make a mistake on.
