Since rooting a few months ago I have been using Starburst with Data2SD. It's brilliant, I have 1gb free for apps and even loading everything I want it's still got space free. Cheers DZ and Sibere Removes my one complaint about the HTC Desire.
Anyway, quite fancy some Gingerbread and also try out some of the Sense 3.0 stuff people are porting, had a go with Supernova but it's a bit slow compared to Starburst ( not a criticism as I know it's early in development ) so looking around at others ROM's Data2SD is not very popular.
A2SD+ still is in favour but I run out of space before getting all my apps on, Data++ needs me to S-OFF, and also looks more complicated to setup, mutiple partitions etc. Can't find a good explanation of Data2ext and Data2we as yet.
Just wondered why is Data2SD not so popular? Am i missing something?
Cheers

Am not sure on this also. Using data2sd is the number one thing, that make's my desire great, without it i'll be lost.
All this App2SD+ is not really that good, you still use all your internal, befor ext3 is used.
I love the fact I have 2GB internal space and not having to worry, about not enough space. Every RoM should have this Data2SD I think
I was a big fan of DATA2SD but it lacks wide compatibility with ROMs: now I'm more than satisfied with CM7 Hboot + Dalvik on sd-ext: got to have over 250 apps installed and still 50 MB in internal.
AFAIK:
- Speed: Most of the time internal memory is faster.
- Corruption: I read that Android does not unmount /data cleanly, so there is a chance of data corruption. Am i still right on this?
I haven't managed to get data2sd working on my phone yet but apps2sd+ is working nicely.
I don't need heaps installed on my phone but have a fair few apps that I want and it seems to be working ok with a apps2sd+ setup.
I have read mixed things about data2sd regarding corruption possible, and also confused about speed as I read that the sd can be faster (probably depending on class?) than internal, and also that internal is faster than sd - so I'm confused
but my phone is working ok at the moment!
SuperNova will probably work a lot better when the official release comes out for Gingerbread
My phone feels faster using Data2sd, and certainly the quadrant scores of 2000+ are much higher than the wife's stock Desire. As for corruption, yes I have, when I have pulled the battery for some reason. Not had a problem for months though.
Regular Nandroid and scheduled titanium backups cover that off anyway.

You do know that these quadrant scores are fake, don't you? I'm quite happy with a2sd and cm7 hboot gingersense roms
I don't think that I would ever sacrifice my data to get more apps
Sent from my HTC Desire
I appreciate the quadrant scores aren't accurate as they change everytime I run it, but the phone feels faster and smoother.
Any links to the fake quadrant score stuff?
Cheers
I have been using data2sd for about one year, and never had data loss or even a single force close of an app.
My phone always runs very fast and smooth, cant say its faster than stock because I wasn't on stock long enough, but I did have lots of force close's on app2sd+ leedroid

i have tried some but i dont which one is the best?
it depends on your usage, they're somehow similar..there's data2ext and app2sd+ rom. no problem with 720p now, its already fixed. but have use various hd rom already and i like the desire hd of robocik and reflextsense by neo.
reflextsense by neo absolutely!
It actually depends on his memory card class what implementation is more suitable for him, with slight tendency of a2sd being a little faster.
I'd opt for Reflex by Neo, that guy makes great ROMs and he is a developer, not just a ROM cooker. It is probably the fastest DHD port, and you could easily install data2sd if you need the extra space, just make sure you have at least class 6 SD card.
Also, people reported great battery life with baadnwz's ROM, might want give that one a look too.

Hey guys,
I've had my Desire rooted for about 2 months now, and I've tried many different ROMs. At first, as I'm sure many of you did, I installed Cyanogenmod, but I didn't like the simplistic interface. Then I decided to install experimental stuff, like the Gingerbread ones, but I soon found out that they were still too laggy and buggy to be considered as a standard ROM.
Now, I've decided to re-install Cyanogenmod 6.1.1 because people love it and it's super fast. The problem is that I don't see the speed that everyone's talking about! My Quadrant score is lower than the Nexus 2.2 score and I cannot understand why. I even installed DeFroST but the results are still the same. The phone is too laggy, much slower than the Stock ROM with HTC Sense (which was pretty damn fast in my opinion). Does anyone knows why this happens? Does this have to do with the ext partition on my 16gb memory card or something?
Thanks in advance,
Louis.
Just how the rom is built. To be honest, anything above the score or 1100 we won't really notice much difference at all. When I've used it, I really tested the balls off it and my CPU score was making the difference. There are subtle differences between roms but we can't notice it so it doesn't matter. Anyway, benchmarks arn't really reliable, just a rough estimate.
I've installed my first ROM even some days ago and I'm getting 1160 on Leedroid 2.3d with a class 4 sd card. Speed is noticeably faster compared to the stock rom, it really is.
Maybe you could try another sd card ?
Don't know if it could help, I'm all new into this too.

Do you fell laggy or slow? Quadrant doesn't show useful statistics... IMO Cyanogen is fast enough. But, if you want you can try MIUI, especially this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=957291
It is really fast and battery saving
P.S.
If you want useful statistics use SmartBench from market, I have 877 and 1114.
SmartBench is better.
And for quadrant:
I have used a ROM which gave me extremly high scores (2200+), but in real life it was laggy and slow.
Now using a ROM which is around 1700, but is super-fast and no lags at all.
The problem is it does feel laggy and it's not a placebo effect because I didn't do the test and then thought that it felt laggy; it felt laggy so I ran the test for confirmation. Froyo 2.2 with Sense was much, much, much faster than a Vanilla CyanogenMod, and even though I never ran Quadrant on it I remember that it was much faster. That is simply not right. Maybe it takes some time for the ROM to "settle" or something?
So I have had my desire a few months now and it is a excellent phone upgrade from my g1 that I rooted. So is it worth of rooting this phone what are the big advantageous over factory. It was fun fun putting different ROMs on my g1 but it was never really stable and they only really reason why I did it was because the g1 was just to slow. The desire tho is super fast so I'm wondering why Anyone roots the desire?
Thanks
There are many stable, fast and bug-free roms to choose from. The best reason to root though is to take advantage of the A2SD+ Roms that let you install all apps to SD, not just the feeble froyo attempt at it.
The Desires biggest weakness is the poor internal storage capacity.
Other benefits are over clocking/under clocking to improve performance or save battery, Customizing with themes, blocking ads, adding wifi n support,....
I'd say it's well worth doing if you are comfortable with the process of rooting. I use the LeeDroid 2.3d A2SD+ ROM. It's a sense rom, fast and stable and never had a days trouble with it. Lee still supports it, and is active in the forum thread. Responds to issues. There aren't going to be many more updates for it, but that's cos it's about perfect! He's doing a gingerbread ROM when the code is released by google.

My EVO has becoming slower. This was obvious through Quadrant, but also slightly through daily use. It was snappier on the first day.
I am rooted; I'm currently on the MikG v1.0 ROM with Gingerbread 2.3.3 and Sense 2.1/3.0 . I take care of my phone: I run a cache cleaner each day for internal storage as well as the SD card. My internal storage is 45% free (194MB) while my SD card is 58% free (4.35GB). My microSD card is a Sandisk 8GB Class 4.
Now, I don't blame any ROM for my low scores / slightly sluggishness. My first ROM was Myn's Warm 2.2 RLS4, then switched to RLS5 within a week once it came out. i used to get scores fluctuating near 1300, even 1400 some times. I don't think I had ever gotten a 1200 back then. I've played around with other ROMs too, including Mikfroyo's ROMs, CM ROMs, and Virus's ROMs etc.. I always properly wipe data, cache, & dalvik cache as well. I've tried custom kernels, mostly being attached to Netarchy's kernels. However, on my currrent ROM I can't use his kernels because there is a specific kernel for this ROM that prevents Wi-Fi and Sprint WiMAX 4G from breaking / being unusable. But you see, the problem isn't even the kernel, because even when I was on a Netarchy kernel on Myn's ROM, I started getting scores nearing 1000 (I've even got around a ~950).
So what's to blame for these low scores? Just the phone becoming old? I'd prefer not having to use a new kernel or ROM, because I've had this problem with most ROMs regardless of kernel. Also, what can I do to speed up my phone?
Thank you so much in advance to anyone who provides help.
I'm pretty sure quadrant scores mean jack ****. That's what all the devs say, at least.
Mik's 2.1 sense w/ some 3.0 also runs considerably slower than stock if that's what you're noticing.
Probably just paranoia and your ROM.

That'd make sense, but I've actually gotten slightly better scores on this ROM.
Also, I started getting lower scores on Myn's ROM first - from 1200s-1300s to 900s-1100s.
EDIT: By the way, I've seen scores in 1700s. Does this just range from phone to phone? Makes me feel like my phone sucks comparatively, lol.
Your phone is like a computer. Sometimes, you just need to start over to clean everything up.
Mine got like that a few months ago, so I ran S-OFF, RUU, re-rooted, etc and started from stock. It made a big difference.

Sent from my Synergy Powered EVO
Yeah, my fault. The S-ON tool is for use when you used Unrevoked to root your phone. You can d/l it on the unrevoked website.
Flash it in recovery before you run RUU
I am finding out from using different roms and getting a feel and see of how fast or slow the actions on my phone has not does not always agree with quadrant...if you run quadrant multiple times you will get different results....not changing anything...so is that a indicator of how good or bad your phone is? Or could it be that quadrant is flawed to use as a gauge. I don't use quadrant anymore near the frequency I did it the past...I would flash a rom every other day it seemed like and over clocked..under clocked...smart ass/interactive/ etc...every setting under the sun to make it faster...smoother and so on just for a few more bars on quadrant or speedtest...ot fps...then I realized I was just wearing out my batteries and buttons and wasting time..quadrant is not even a speed test...it is really a judge at how the darn quadrant feels like the score it wants to give you. Maintenance of the phone is needed.but a few hundred points that could vary after hundreds of hours literally of trying to max out poerformance.....ask yourself...is it really worth it...that is what I now tell myself...
Everyones perfect ROM is going to be different, so here are a list of things I wanted before i set on my search for my ageing desire.
1. Smooth and responsive UI, not fussed about quadrant speeds etc.
2. Good battery life. I'm quite a heavy user, so never gonna get more than a day anyway. Screen is always the heaviest user of my battery.
3. Stability, who doesnt!
4. Plenty of free space to install loads of apps.
I was already a big fan of Go Launcher/SMS/Contacts/Keyboard, so sense isnt a big issue for me. So I tried loads of roms and during the process found some other things I just couldnt live without.
5. Sense weather lockscreen. Love it, swinging the ring around the screen makes a great stress toy!
6. Sense quick settings, the full list not just a handful.
7. Extended power menu, booting straight into recovery is great.
I'm currently using Sebastians Runnymead v5 rom with ad2sdx and ticks my box in all areas. There is a slight question mark over stability tho, i had a couple of freezes on v4.8 and some corruption on the ext4 partition.
Hopefully these have gone in v5.
I have an HTC Desire Amoled Soff, 8gig Samsung class 10 SD card (with only a 6Mb/s write speed, wtf? but 20+Mb/s read.) 123MB free RAM, 485MB free ROM(love it!) and 40 apps installed.
Can anyone else suggest a better ROM for me?
Thanks.
AOSP is always going to be a good choice but you say sense is not an issue, but from your list of requirements, it is...
does USB-mode work for u on this ROM?

Lol, very true. I was using Oxygen for a while and had no complaints at all, until I found my bluetooth headset and wanted to press the button and say the name of who i wanted to call. Not sure if that feature was implemented, but I never could get it working.

Just tested it and yes it does. However, I do seem to recall that I had problems with that a couple of days ago, although it might have been on a previous release.
Try LeeDroid 3.3.3 HD port. I'm loving it... Ticks all your boxes with the sense 3 patch.

My perfect rom...
I love the speed of CM7.1 and its clean interface. very slick, and would have it as my permanent ROM if if had the D2SD scripts that supernova 2.4.0.0 has.
I do love some of the things sense has, like the gallery app that connects to facebook and the clock, but if CM 7.1 had the integrated d2sd that supernova has then I could east live without sense...
You know you can add data2sd to most ROMS anyway?
yeah iu know, but i really dont have the time at the moment to mess about too much.
i like how starburst just works "out the box".....
maybe when i have a little time i will look into it and put together my own custom rom....
Redux v2.0 for sure my friend. It's stable, fast and very smooth. Very good battery life and no fc's. I'm using it for the last months and before this rom I was on redux 1.2 Just give it a try. Some tips are dalvik to ext, launcher pro plus and fancy widget 1.3.0 if you like Htc clock widget.
Sent from my HTC Desire using xda premium
I try Evolutionary Sense and is very good rom. Fast, stable whit many apps from the market, rich of all kind of widget.
The gingerbread 2.3.3 based on ACE kernel is most usable than the stock rom.
For me it's the best.
I'm sorry that this ROM has no update for over 2-3 months.
Than i used CyanogenMod whit good impressive but, i think, the Desire without Sense is about a thing like donut without hole. !!
Now i test MIUI-XJ from 2 days. It's too late to make a review but i see the good stability, speed and very nice.
Bye.
You must to try MIUI. Seriously.

Well yeah as the desire was initially only designed to work with class 4-6 cards, many class 10's only perform as a class 6 too.

reallly? well you stopped me from buying a class 10. thanks.
Some work. Terepin here reports A-Data class 10 gets class 10 speeds.
I can report that Kingston Class 10's only get Class 6 speeds.
Although class 10 is a good investment for the future though, but probably cheaper then anyway
