[Q] Cyanogenmod v.7 and dalvik cache

Recently I've managed to root using Unrevoked and flash a new ROM to my HTC Desire, I currently have Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2 running and it's fantastic!
However I'm already running low of internal memory.
I've done some reading about how to boost this by setting up a partition on my memory card, however there are some things that don't quite add up in my head. Below is a list of what I think I need to do to obtain A2SD+ for Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2, correct me if I'm wrong anywhere please
Make a backup using ROM manager
Copy all important data from memory card as I will have to format it - This includes the backup.
Use ROM manager to format the SD card and create a ext3 partition
Download S2E (Simple2ext) from the android marketplace and tick the box to move the dalvik cache to the SD card.
If the process list above is correct then my questions are:
Do I need to have obtained S-OFF to complete this process?
Do you need to start from a clean slate when moving the dalvik cache, i.e. should I factory-reset/wipe dalvik cache/wipe cache and then install Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2 again?
When you move over the dalvik cache is this a permanent move? For example if I had problem booting and I went through the factory-reset/wipe dalvik cache/wipe cache and then install Cyanogenmod v.7 RC2 again would this reset the dalvik cache back to its original location on the internal memory? Or would something more complicated need to be done to achieve this?
Thank you in advance for any help,
I'm slowly learning the basics

Bump,
any help would be greatly appreciated.
For any tl;dr
I really just want to know if moving the Dalvik cache to the SD card is permanent? Or will a full re-flash restore the dalviks original path back to the internal memory?
1) No.
2) No, don't do anything.
3) The dalvik cache does get moved but not too sure if it's permanent.
I would say to move dalvik cache back to internal, you would have to wipe /system because it's a script that gets installed as you need to remove the script. It's not permanent the way your thinking of. Just if you move it using the script then I don't think you can move it back whilst the script is installed. When the script is removed it will reset and go back to internal. Does that even make any sense?

Problem clearing Dalvik cache

When I am trying to clear the Dalvik cache as a step in installing whatever ROM I am getting an error message.
When I go into Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache> as soon as I select Wipe and it asks me if I'm sure, a line shows up that says "E:unknown volume for path [/sd-ext]". When I scroll down and say yes it gives me a message that says it worked.
The SD card is actually at [/external_sd]. So did it work, or is it lying to itself?
I'm confused about why it's looking for the Dalvik cache on the external SD. I thought that would be internal. What do I need to change so that CWM (and my OS?) is looking for the external in the right place?
I discovered this when I was installing Jugs 3.7. It installed clean and is working just fine. This error message also reproduced itself when I installed Domination 2.0 with the ICS theme. That rom also installed correctly and, as far as I could tell in the hour I was playing with it, had no glitches.

Mine says the same with the volume ....I thought it was just me....but everything runs perfect so I didn't wanna bring it up
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA Premium App
Same here...not worried. All works without a glitch.

You can ignore that error. Almost everyone will get it.
The reason being, there are ext to sd scripts that people use on other devices that have very low internal storage. So they will move the /data partition to sd-ext. Now since the dalvik-cache is located in the /data partition, the wipe dalvik cache script inside cwm will auto-wipe to both locations, just incase. Since our phones don't really need this, we have tons of internal storage, we don't utilize those scripts.
Also don't confuse this with apps 2 sd scripts, or just moving apps to your sdcard, it's not the same thing.

[Q] ICS 4.0.4 BCM RC3.7U0 GSM/CDMA and A2SD

Hi,
first i love these ROM ICS 4.0.4 BCM RC3.7U0 GSM/CDMA .
Questions .
I have Stock HBOOT and in the ROM is Mounts2SD activated with APPS?
In the GUI its activated and in the terminal. But there is not to much space that's why i use Link2SD too .
All Apps are running except Adobe Reader, Amazon Kindle, Angry Birds, Mx Player, Navigon Select - with Link2SD .
Yesterday i activated in the GUI Mounts2SD Dalvik Cache and have much errors with APPs.... closed and the system is slowly .
Before the nice ROM i habe CM 7.1, 7.2 and Link2SD with no errors.
HBOOT Stock
S-Off
ext3 1GB 2.partion
Whats the solution?
HBOOT the right one?
how can i use only Mounts2SD with more space?
Hi,
By now I've seen problems appearing several times when moving dalvik to SD on ICS...
Have you tried to run fix_permissions?
What happens if you deactive dalvik in mounts2sd? still so many errors?
no errors - apps closed when
- Mounts2SD Apps enabled
- the most Apps moved to SDext with link2SD
- Adobe Reader, Amzon Kindle, Angry Birds, MX Player, Navigon Select runs only when they moved with A2SD.
errors - when enabled Dalvik Cache
- when i reboot the desire
- long booting
- log in the system is very slow
- open apps like maps.... the apps are closed
on CM 7.1, 7.2 RC1 & 2
- link2SD APPS, Dalvik Cache, DATA moved to sd_ext
- no Problems

I recommend to try to 'fix permission'
Alternatively you can boot into recovery, and wipe dalvik/cache am reboot. The first boot is rather slow, but should be fine after.

You shouldn't use L2SD and M2SD at the same time, bro. Choose one of them.
M2SD set to Apps+Dalvik to sd-ext is just fine for stock HBOOT, I used just the same until I flashed Data++ HBOOT.

Actually I can't see a reason why you have used all those scripts together but with the build in m2sd this is what I've got:
Sent from my HTC Desire using Tapatalk
so, i moved the apps back with link2sd, delete link2sd and reboot.
Now i have 63 MByte free space with Mounts2SD only apps.
What is good to move Dalvik Cache, Data?
My MicroSDHC 16 GByte Class 6
I will install Google Chrome, but i faild with no space
Don't use mount2sd and link2sd together..... You'll face issues.... I did too.....
Just use m2sd to move app and data to sdext.....you'll have plenty of space...and leave dalvik on nand
Sent from outer space using RF transmitters
Is there any way to download M2SD? I need to to move my Cache (not Dalvik Cache) as it's filled and I can't install any more apps. I can't seem to find it anywhere and no scripts or other apps I've looked at can move the Cache.
EDIT: Found it!

I'd try starting a fresh.
@Yasir Javed Ansari
now i have only Mounts2SD.
My Questions
should i enabled in Mounts2SD Cache, Data too and some more?
Is it good to enabled that or not?
I can't install Google Chrome
now i enable in the Mounts2SD GUI Dalvik Cache and after a while its running smooth .
With RC3.6U0 and RC3.6U1 its smooth
With RC4.0U0 its like the desire have an HDD - when i touch at the apps take a little time to come.
Where is CID the new BootAnimation from CM9?

i totally agree with this
i have just created the same setupalthough i have changed Hboot to alpharev Data++
I have now installed every app i have ever installed and still have over 100mb free with just apps on sd. putting data there too means virtually all of internal memory free

Are you sure this isnt the known problem associated with partitioning with CWM? Use 4ext if so.
I recommend merging ext3 to ext4 partition
all is fine now with RC4.0U1
only with Chrome
when i start Chrome it says that some data is missing .

[Q] Move cache (not dalvik cache) to sd-ext?

I tried stock a2sd with Y, Y, Y and after installing a load of apps it says "Insufficient storage available" for each new app (apart from a few small apps dotted around the middle of the sea of Insufficient storage available errors). Titanium Backup says that every partition has loads of free space.
In recovery it says the "Cache" partition is nearly full. How can I move this to the sd-ext partition (not the dalvik cache)?
Also, does stock a2sd with Y, Y, Y, do the same thing as data2sd and do I need to do a2sd install each time I install a new app?
Not 100% sure but if ur s-off rooted etc u can use terminal emulator from market and type
su
cachesd
Maybe someone can confirm this as i hav'nt used it myself but seen it in another post
Sent from my HTC Desire
Thanks but I already tried that - it seems to only move the dalvik cache.
maybe this will help

Thanks. In the second link you posted I found this post, that explains you need to install Darktremor Apps2SD. Can this be used with stock A2SD, or do I need to start a fresh? It does look like you need to start a fresh because of overlapping commands and it has the same commands as stock A2SD anyway.
I have an sd-ext partition - will the script move it to there or the SD card and will I have to run it each time I install a new app?
I did try searching the forums and Google with different terms, but I couldn't find anything.
EDIT: It only mentions the Dalvik Cache, NOT the Cache in the Darktremor Apps2SD link below. I'll try it, but it looks like it's back to square one. Says here: "cachesd - Moves Dalvik cache files to the ext2/ext3/ext4 partition on your secure digital card. Creates Dalvik Cache to SD flag."
EDIT2: I found here that using Mount2SD there's an option to move the Cache when it's too small! But I can't find a download link.
EDIT3: Found it!
Cache - m2sd cache <enable/disable/auto>
By enabling this option, the script will link /sd-ext/cache to the /cache location. This is useful if your cache partition is to small to download big apps from market.
If you don't have an sd-ext partition, the cache will be linked to /data/cache instead.
Also by setting the auto option instead of enable, the script will only remount the cache if the nand cache is below 40mb.

low storage (dalvik cache vs Android 4.1.2 vs MIUI ROM)

Hi,
I was thinking about how to solve low storage problems on my HTC Desire, I have a question about Link2SD in relation to MIUI ROM and Android 4.1.2
To increase the available storage, in my previous ROM (CM7.1 on Android 2.3.7) I used Link2SD in order to move to the SD-EXT partition either apk, libs and dalvik cache.
I installed Link2SD even on my new MIUI ROM on Android 4.1.2.
I'm able to move either apk, libs and dalvik cache to SD_EXT as expected BUT (!) as soon as I restart the phone I'm prompted with a screen saying "optimizing apps" and if I open again Link2SD I see that:
apk and libs are still on the SD-EXT partition
dalvik cache has been moved back to internal memory.
Sincerely I don't know if this has to be addressed to Android 4.1.2 or MIUI ROM
Any suggestion about how to actually move dalvik cache to EXT ??
Thanks in advance for your support
Don't use Link2sd.
Use this script. It will move app and dalvik to sd-ext.

thanks for your reply.... but what does this script do?
will it move only user app?
will t let me choose which apps must be moved? or does it move in a massive way?
The problem is not that Link2SD cannot move dalvik to EXT but the problem is that MIUI/Android move back dalvik to internal memory after reboot.
Does this script solve that too?
