Ive been looking at all the themes and such for the Epic 4G , and the themers / Developers really have persuaded me to learn how to theme .
I was wondering if there was any videos or How - To's that I watch or read to learn how to theme ?
I could start of easy by editing themes ? Then go into making my own theme . .
Im running Windows 7 , 4gb Ram , 600 GB Space If this is needed thanks to all who read this and who will be helping me begin theming .
Dreams has a great guide written in the stickies

you know, after I read that guide three time's. the steps and work are like 1/4th the time it takes to read it and understand it. lol.

I am sorry if this was posted before, but I was looking at some of the guides for learning how to make themes. I have never done anything like this before or done any of this type of programming, but would like to try and learn how to.
But I am a person that learns better with watching what must be done then actually reading it lol. Is it possible for someone who does themes for the epic can possibly post or make videos on how to actually start learning how to make themes from the stock files? Like setting up the different programs needed and then maybe doing a sample of how to actually make a theme from the stock.
I hope I am not offending anyone for asking this, but I find this site very fascinating but like I said I am very new to this type of programming or working with android phones.
But I will understand if this is not possible to do since so many people have different ways of working and might not be able to show there work. But any possible help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you all for your time and patience.
youtube has given me knowledge a time or two.
There are a bunch of how to's all over these forums. Some have videos. feel free to ask questions and myself and others will help

Ok first of I know of many questions lol....Even tho froyo is out now, do we the eclipse plugin for adb? I follow the written tutorial to install sdk and the apk manager app.
But I did not install the eclipse adt plugin that the guide talked about, is it necessary even tho we are on froyo currently?
Also what would be a very good starting point for a newbie? Should I focus on a specific field of the android devices or is themeing very different from the other aspects of modding the epic phones?
I have yet to use eclipse on any theme I been apart of. I use apkmanager to de compile and re compile .apks. I use notepad ++ to edit xml files. Xml files can only be edited when the apk had been de compiled. I use gimp for image editing. You can use any photo editing program you like. I use 7zip to brite and put the images in the apk. Baksmali and smali for editing .dex files.
I suggest reading the how to's as they explain everything in detail.

I learned everything on my own. I didn't have anyone to teach me. I taught thomasskull666 and where working on some good projects. Me and dreamsforgotten are always bouncing ideas off of each other. If you see my eclair build I was the imply theme with the reboot options that I will port over to froyo once we get an official build. I also have two other things I figured out for froyo that you can see in my froyo build. I labeled all the silent options correctly to vibrate and I removed the sprint branding. Its hard to believe I was like you when I got my epic. I didn't know ****.

I'm 26. Its not hard to learn the basics. Xml for the most part is well writtin so making those changes are somewhat easy. Smali is a ***** to edit and that I'm still learning. For the most part a theme is 95% images.

I remember when I first started developing on android it would take me hours searching on google and xda just to find out how to compile a wifi module correctly or why the heck a kernel would not compile right and, though it brings a lot of satisfaction when you accomplish feats in rom making and development. I sometimes wish there was a how to guide I could reference when I first started out. Instead of searching hours and hours trying to figure it out on my own or on google. So I thought I might make a how to guide on a Basic compiling of a kernel and platform for the epic touch 4g and maybe expand in the future to more complex custom stuff. I just wanted to see how the community at xda would like a thread like this in the epic touch 4g forums. Before I start. Just to see how many people want to develop and learn about android and the linux kernel and deving for it.
So tell me what you think!!!
Bad idea or Genius idea!!!
Update: I am done with the how-to and I am just going to double check everything today and I well post it tommorow morning. (It well be posted before 8 o-clock PST.) It well be posted in android development section.
Update 2: I LIED! I decided to post it now instead of waiting untill tommorow!
Here is the link:

But the rest of the week is pretty free and I have monday and Tuesday off so I well have it up the latest by tuesday. I hope this guide brings new inspired developers to android.

It well be free. If this guide helps you in anyway I would appreciate if you said thanks. Or if you really feel I helped, you can donate to help expand this guide to other android devices. But, I am not doing this to make ANY money and nobody should feel pressure to give money or anything.

I have a Epic touch 4g, a galaxy tab 10.1, and an original epic 4g, I hope to get guides to these three devices starting with the epic touch 4g. I really would love to expand this to more
devices because not every android kernel sources released from manufacturerers are and exactly the same (or complete). And also Various mods on a samsug epic touch 4g might not be configured the same as say on a htc evo 4g or something. So hopefully I soon can get more devices to test and make more guides.

I was just thinking a lot of the more basic compiling parts and things would be similar. There is a possibility that I can read your guide and compile for my phone
Edit. If I can, I will help you expand your guide on other devices.I also have a transformer 101

That would be great! The more guides the better! The main compiling (which is what the guide well be on initially) should work fine. I well point it out if something is device specific in the guide.
Great idea! Please include step by step on how to properly compile framework-res.apk and other stock apks.....I'm able to edit images and XML but can't get the damn thong to compile without errors. I know a lot of other people run in to the same problem. Using apkmanager 4.9. Also how to use dependencies (if needed for Samsung). I searched everywhere but still get errors compiling, even for a simple XML edit. I never had those problems when working with the vibrant. I asked around but didn't get much feedback at all... Looking forward to this.

As we all know 3D sense has it's featured 3D rosie and 3D widgets , so I wanted to port this hdpi 3D rosie to our mdpi phones , and since I am 14 years old I got lots of free time to work on resizing , so I had 2 questions so I could go resizing and they might be some sort of dumb but important :
1. I am using Photoshop , to port to mdpi should see a difference between the same pic as hdpi and mdpi and deduce a ratio that i should use throughout the process ??
2. After resizing all png files , should i put them in a drawable-mdpi folder or just replace the hdpi files by the mdpi ones in the original drawable-hdpi folder ?
3. Is there anything to do between porting and the xml files available throughout the apk file ?
Thanks for all the devs who are helping , and btw , I think many people will like it ! And I am sorry for posting this in the Dev forum , but I think most of the devs that can help usually look at this forum ...

You would have to change xmls aswell, the xmls would then use the mdpi source if you told them too.

hmmm , then all I can do is resize pngs , well if other devs with skill using xml (cuz I am not) could resize the 3.5 Rosie and widgets , and I can resize all hdpi pngs to mdpi , btw i now use mogrify.c for resizing through the cmd , at least it respects alpha !
and for that i am 14 , yes I started visiting your website once my bro got his HD2 running android , and that when i was 12 maybe I actually was googling because I locked his pattern lock , and all my attempts were wrong , so I locked it unless by google account and I was a true noob ... then after I got my x10 mini pro , this was my favorite site , after getting my WFS , I was intruduced to apps2sd , data2sd , making batch files and flashable zips , modding and so much more !
Looking for a couple people who know there way around android for some upcoming projects to build as a team!
It dont pay crap!
But its a chance to get your name out there.
Positions are open for
Dev - must have an understanding of all modding aspects of android and kitchen knowledge
Themer - must know how to decompile and recompile apps, read some code and have good taste
Modder - must have knowledge in modding apks and code
Photoshop guy - must know photoshop very well and be able to make images
If interested pm me with your android background

I've got all the time in the world. I have done some minor work before with themes, mods, and a tad of development.
I am by no means an expert, but I do have a decent amount of experience in Photoshop.
I will try to learn anything I can to help if needed. I wish I knew how to code, as for me it's kinda o a point where I can read/modify not write.
