how-to guide for android in future? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I remember when I first started developing on android it would take me hours searching on google and xda just to find out how to compile a wifi module correctly or why the heck a kernel would not compile right and, though it brings a lot of satisfaction when you accomplish feats in rom making and development. I sometimes wish there was a how to guide I could reference when I first started out. Instead of searching hours and hours trying to figure it out on my own or on google. So I thought I might make a how to guide on a Basic compiling of a kernel and platform for the epic touch 4g and maybe expand in the future to more complex custom stuff. I just wanted to see how the community at xda would like a thread like this in the epic touch 4g forums. Before I start. Just to see how many people want to develop and learn about android and the linux kernel and deving for it.
So tell me what you think!!!
Bad idea or Genius idea!!!
Update: I am done with the how-to and I am just going to double check everything today and I well post it tommorow morning. (It well be posted before 8 o-clock PST.) It well be posted in android development section.
Update 2: I LIED! I decided to post it now instead of waiting untill tommorow!
Here is the link:

It well be free. If this guide helps you in anyway I would appreciate if you said thanks. Or if you really feel I helped, you can donate to help expand this guide to other android devices. But, I am not doing this to make ANY money and nobody should feel pressure to give money or anything.

I don't have an epic 4g phone but I'm very interested in this as well. Maybe some or most would apply to my device as well!! Thanks!

I have a Epic touch 4g, a galaxy tab 10.1, and an original epic 4g, I hope to get guides to these three devices starting with the epic touch 4g. I really would love to expand this to more
devices because not every android kernel sources released from manufacturerers are and exactly the same (or complete). And also Various mods on a samsug epic touch 4g might not be configured the same as say on a htc evo 4g or something. So hopefully I soon can get more devices to test and make more guides.

That would be great! The more guides the better! The main compiling (which is what the guide well be on initially) should work fine. I well point it out if something is device specific in the guide.

Great idea! Please include step by step on how to properly compile framework-res.apk and other stock apks.....I'm able to edit images and XML but can't get the damn thong to compile without errors. I know a lot of other people run in to the same problem. Using apkmanager 4.9. Also how to use dependencies (if needed for Samsung). I searched everywhere but still get errors compiling, even for a simple XML edit. I never had those problems when working with the vibrant. I asked around but didn't get much feedback at all... Looking forward to this.

[OT][ACS]Other Forums - Learning to be Neighbors

So I've had the opportunity to browse a lot of other forums lately. They're really different and sometimes really the same. If you've ever watched that lame but great show Sliders, it can be something like that at times. I will update this list with characteristics in case you're looking for a fun place to look and contribute, since a lot of our knowledge is transferable.
Forums you should check out:
Droid 3: they're so damn close to rooting that thing. such a cool process to watch
Update: they have root
Droid Charge: Doppelganger world to ours, phone is at a similar stage of development even though it's relatively new
Fascinate: The VT of forums, lots of good vibes and they shame people into behaving
Galaxy Tab: Has two dev communities and both seem to be great. I plan to get one soon but I'm still learning. People seem friendly, though.
EVO: Decent community despite the sh*t we give them. It's like a city of forums and wandering into some of those threads makes ours look tame. Sometimes it's easier when everybody know your name.
Will update as I wander, think of me as Travelling Matt from Fraggle Rock.
I highly doubt that XDA would enjoy this thread. Let alone its off-topic.

I think he's referring to other XDA forums for those particular phones. I had some good reading on the V6 TurboCharger thread. A flame war between developers turned into a joint development breakthrough...entertaining stuff. I will check these out as well. You never know what you may find from doing some reading. TheRoot always finds the best themed apps for me.

You don't go to McDonald's for a Whopper. XDA makes money from ads, so they forbid referring people to other sites whether for info or downloads.
Ive been in the Nexus S forums lately because my gf finally let me root her phone (thank you so much for the video and links qbking) and I was literally in shock from how many choices there were.... I literally had no idea where to start even though I like to think of myself as an expert flasher/rooter.... I often forget that the Epic community isnt the only one on the Web lmao
Not that anyone cares but I think this is a great topic. Android is about sharing information, ideas and our work. We have to allow for other forums or even websites to exist. XDA is the only site that seems to struggle with this concept.
There are tons of other great websites out there and well as tons of other great forums right here at XDA. When I was actively developing on the Epic, I found very helpful information in many other forums. Some were other Galaxy S based forums but others were HTC or Motorola based sections.
I think this was a fantastic topic to get started and I completely agree with it. I just wanted to show some support and say hello.

ICS Source Code has been released!

This is awesome. We should be seeing a lot of ROM's popping up soon guys.
http://www.androidcentral.com/ice-cream-sandwich-source-code-now-being-pushed-git-servers
HC source was also released by the way. Maybe we could get some feature in HC on our existing phones.
You didn't see the other three threads pertaining to the release of the ICS source code?
Can't wait for this to start popping up on ROMs. Beautiful!
I'd be happy with an AOSP kernel.

How do you think this is possible? Cyanogen tweeted to check back in two months for CM9. We have no ICS source code for our device. The source code released is designed specifically to compile for use on the Galaxy Nexus, which is nothing like our device in terms of hardware. Please avoid making statements like this, as it only serves to ramp up unrealistic expectations, which is not good for either developers or users.
Apparently you have no idea what you're talking about. Do you honestly think a dev on XDA isn't going to get this up and running for our phones. Look what devs are able to do just with the SDK.
Also, look at the keyword in that sentence. It's not getting people's expectations up. I specifically said hopefully.

Unfortunately, I know significantly more about this issue than you do. None of the SDK ports are complete. Do your research. No developer will EVER claim that an SDK port is a viable daily driver. Also, please point me to where I said that it won't eventually be developed for the E4gT? At no point did I say that. My goal is to temper expectations, which you obviously don't care about. First you said "this weekend." Then you said hopefully CM9 by Christmas. You can say "hopefully" all you want, but Cyanogen himself has given a loose timeframe of 2 months.

I don't see trolling, I see responding. You may not like what he's saying, and I may not like the implications of it, but it appears to be a factual analysis of the situation intended to prevent people from getting overexcited. Look at the amount of entitled *****ing that people have been giving to the CM team over getting ANY version on our phones. People thinking that unrealistic goals are feasible helps raise that. I personally like your optimism, but I'm all for realism being injected into the discussion, too.
Guys, guys, guys. Sometimes its just more fun to raise your hopes; convince yourself there is something to look forward to in the near future. No need to rain on everyone's parade who are (as I am) not knowledgeable enough to know that our hopes may be too high.
Remember when you used to just want things and not have the ability to know whether or not you could get it? Childhood? Its not necessarily a bad thing.

Attention all Theme and Kernel Developers all devices

Hello, I worked in the past with The OG Droid, HTC Incredible, HTC Thunderbolt in a Team environment and solo. I began my work with Kernels and later moved on to work with JRummy and N8Dyddy in Lithuimmod. That was back in the day "ha". Altough the last kernel work I did publicly was with the HTC Thunderbolt I have continued to follow the world of Android very closely. I since have switched carriers and sport the Awesome Samsung Galaxy S2 Epic 4g Touch.
Today I am inviting all Kernel and Theme developers to post their work in my new app that will soon be released to the Market. The app will be a centralized location for just Themes and Kernels to be downloaded and brief info about the work. I know time is valuable, my intent is to cut down the time to find the latest and greatest, offering these hard working developers another channel for their work to shine, not taking away from this wonderful forum of course. I enjoy the forums and only truly enjoy them when I am home from work with a drink and can take in all the info.
I look forward to hearing from all .Thank you and it feels good to be back.
Developers please send me your info i.e
Device,Build info and any other relevant information.
Welcome!!! That's an awesome idea!! I can't wait to have an app to go to to get whatever theme I wanna use!!
It will be out shortly. Just contacting developers now. The app is pretty much finished
What will the name of the app be?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA App
Kernel Hub
Will the themes be just for our specific device? Or will it be a bunch of phones just categorized?
My Goal is to support as many devices as possible. But I will begin with our device.
try contacting some devs in the dev section too!
I will be as soon as I reach my ten posts min requirement.
Ya great idea. I spend so much time digging in here for everything I need. It would be a much needed time saver. Would there be a way to review the theme or kernel within the app? Or would it link to an xda thread?

yup. seen it. But I want to do it alone. Just need a kick start.
any guidance is appreciated.
There are plenty of guides you can read. Kernel development isn't easy. It's not something you're gonna start having never done it before and just build yourself a kernel. The first smartphone kernel I ever built took me 6 months to get fully working and it was for a palm pre and I had experience building desktop kernels for various linux distros.
I like to break stuff!
The first kernels I did were based off of a guide from joeykrim and help from vampirefo. They are a PIA until you get used to it. Good luck with your endevors. Here is a decent guide to start with, change the device though. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1516051

There isnt any kickstart for making kernel for a phone if you havent built a kernel before. I would suggest looking at the community dev thread again, as most of the build process has already been gone over. Do you have a Linux distro running yet?

Things are rarely that simple, not because cherry picks don't work, but because some people are in different circumstances than your own. My current phone is a HTC One running a stock kernel, and without more sources custom kernels and ROMs are something of a tricky business right now. I prefer stock when possible, so an Xposed-style framework patch is a good way of "cherry picking" what I would like in a workable manner.
Great that you're sharing the news, but you posted in every thread already and now opened a thread in dev section =/

Obviously you guys are friends and you decided to take up for your Buddy which is fine with me they can pull this anytime they please.. It was only done to benefit all toro+ ROMs I'm not even mad about what he said he has a right to have an opinion and speak it freely... I'm not going to speak on it anymore.. I don't want to receive sn infraction for making more out of something than necessary... If it costs nothing to pass over this post and live your life.. I will be doing the same.. Again this was only made to give allr necessary links to compile.

My two cents...I know goast from the forums, and he is an advanced user and a great resource to me. He's obviously pumped up about halo, and rightly so (it's a pretty amazing innovation by PA team). I'm not attacking anyone, but I like to stay informed about new things, so I appreciated his blast out. Many devs here work demanding jobs, and donate their personal time to development, so this info may help them in this fragmented crazy fast paced world. I just wanted to thank goast for the info, and impart some positive energy here. I'm not a dev, nor am I an expert, but I share goast's passion for android and desire to learn more about it. To me, that's why I love xda...I have a commercially dead device that is still extremely viable thanks to all of the great work here. Ok, I'm done...everybody enjoy halo!
