You could use Go SMS which has some nice themes. You can find it here.
There are 5 themes pre installed. Open messaging app, press menu button, click setting and choose skin.

Does anyone know if we can download more themes/skins for the messaging app? and if so, where to get them?

Hello,
I really hate the htc dialer and people, does anyone have the stock phone and contact apk that I can use instead of the HTC stuff. Thanks
U can try luncher pro along with dialer 1 or any other dialer of your choice from the market. The luncher pro allows u to change your lunch screen. U can customize it however you like.

I am coming from a Sensation and liked their MMS/SMS Application, its layout, colors, etc. I am really not too found of Samsung's default texting application, it's colors, etc. Is there a replacement app someone can recommend or is this someway to change the layout colors, etc. I really don't care for it (one of the few things I don't like about the phone).
Thanks, in advance.
If you flash the deodexed version then i suggest pushing the mms.apk from a cm7 rom thats 2.3.5 or just you know use GO sms Pro

You should try go sms or handcent sms. Both very good and each have a lot of customizations, fonts and even themes.

Does anyone know if there is something like this out there? I wish there was a built it notification that had a quick reply option without having to replace the stock messaging app. im not a fan of sms pop up from the market.
Any ideas from developers if this is possible? Or if something like this is already out there. I just hate how android currently handles sms notifications, you have to take way too many steps in order to view and reply to the message.
Thanks!

You're going to have to choose a 3rd party SMS app that you like and does what you are looking for.
Its easier to do that than expect someone to custom-make a system app that can replace the SMS app entirely and add your desired functionality.
Try SMS Popup, I've been using it since 2009 when I got my OG droid...indispensable!!
You should try Go sms pro, i think its the best sms app atm on market.

Did you even read the op? He said he doesn't like SMS popup
I had SMS pop up installed on my DroidX and when I got my galaxy nexus it didn't work at first. Once I reinstalled it runs perfectly.

SMS popup does exactly what the OP is asking for. I cannot see why he doesn't like it. It allows quick response, etc...

Popup SMS does something extremely similar. Non-intrusive, doesn't mess with YouTube playback, and has some level of customization.
Give it a look. I love it.
I use handcent . Give it a shot
Hello guys!
I recently installed the official ics rom on my samsung galaxy s2.
I always used on gingerbread SMS GO PRO (I'm a fan of the team go, their apps are always good) but with ics sends two text messages at time.
I write this post because you suggested just the app that I mentioned. It 's a known problem and I can fix it?
The other proposed programs have themes that are close to holo?
Thanks a lot,
Sli
handcent is pretty nice.

Im currently on the Andromadus Audacity Beta 3 and love the rom so far, but the MMS apk included kinda sticks out. Is there a way to change the colors of the app so I can get a black background and blue or white text to match the ICS style theme, or is there another apk I can flash to replace the one that came built in with the rom?
Found all over google play

I didnt want an add on app though like go sms or handcent. I like the stock one just not the look of it.
Go SMS is your best bet. It has plenty of themes to suit your needs. It even has quick reply, quick text, (and more) something stock doesn't have. It's a nice app.

Do you know if its safe to remove the stock mms app and use go sms as a standalone?
You don't even have to remove the stock one but you can, or if you want in between freeze stock in titanium backup

Removing the stock mms apk will force close go sms. At least this is what I've found on testing when I was making a rom having only go sms.

I always use go SMS and delete the mms apk via titanium backup. There is a feature that allows it to operate with it deleted

If u want to theme the mms app, you have to decompile mms.apk and go into drawable hdpi folder and change around some of the images. For more complex things you can edit the style.xml file in the decompiled mms apk

Is there a way to show emoji icon instead of the android plain text?

I wasn't aware instagram had integrated emoji, sounds like you need a keyboard with the functionality then. I don't know of any.
go keyboard has emoji plugin.
