Does anyone know if there is something like this out there? I wish there was a built it notification that had a quick reply option without having to replace the stock messaging app. im not a fan of sms pop up from the market.
Any ideas from developers if this is possible? Or if something like this is already out there. I just hate how android currently handles sms notifications, you have to take way too many steps in order to view and reply to the message.
Thanks!

You're going to have to choose a 3rd party SMS app that you like and does what you are looking for.
Its easier to do that than expect someone to custom-make a system app that can replace the SMS app entirely and add your desired functionality.
Try SMS Popup, I've been using it since 2009 when I got my OG droid...indispensable!!
You should try Go sms pro, i think its the best sms app atm on market.

Did you even read the op? He said he doesn't like SMS popup
I had SMS pop up installed on my DroidX and when I got my galaxy nexus it didn't work at first. Once I reinstalled it runs perfectly.

SMS popup does exactly what the OP is asking for. I cannot see why he doesn't like it. It allows quick response, etc...

Popup SMS does something extremely similar. Non-intrusive, doesn't mess with YouTube playback, and has some level of customization.
Give it a look. I love it.
I use handcent . Give it a shot
Hello guys!
I recently installed the official ics rom on my samsung galaxy s2.
I always used on gingerbread SMS GO PRO (I'm a fan of the team go, their apps are always good) but with ics sends two text messages at time.
I write this post because you suggested just the app that I mentioned. It 's a known problem and I can fix it?
The other proposed programs have themes that are close to holo?
Thanks a lot,
Sli
handcent is pretty nice.

HANDSCENT!
I tried to go back to the the basic mms on my evo. But couldn't keep away from hanscent. Can customize way too much, not a bad thing, but I spend a lot of time tweaking it just right. so i love it now lol
CyanogenMod-6.1 mms.apk here I tried hancent, being picky ... I just dont care for the UI and the widget looks like crap but its a good app just not for me.

Can I just delete the mms.apk that's already installed and install CM's? I remember reading some posts about people having problems with picture messages breaking without the original MMS.apk.

Can someone post the Cyanogen 6-1 mms.apk file please? I tried looking for it , but couldn't find it.

some place in the world !!!!
so basically theres only 2 SMS apps?
(handcent and chomp) talking aftermarket sms programs
+1 Handcent
Any way to edit them?
Agreed, the :O face looks really angry which is weird.
Try sms go pro
haha I know same, I like the messaging app though.
I use Handcent. You can customize emoticons and send emoji smiles to you iPhone friends (or Android friends with Handcent, Go SMS etc.).
They're just .pngs in an apk (think it's systemui.apk). UOTKitchen also has several versions to choose from, though I haven't tried it with the galaxy nexus...so I'm not sure if it's updated for ICS.
I too hated the emoticons. Handcent has the option to use "Handcent emoticons" (not emoji) instead and they are much better.
I reccommend GO SMS simply for the various customizations, emoji plugin, and the notification pop-up.
This are the same emoticons form honeycomb... just ugly...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using XDA App
As someone said above - you can replace them in UOT Kitchen or pull framework-res.apk and do it manually. Really easy.

Have you experienced any issues with Handcent on ICS? I would get FC's alot when I was using it.
Instead of modifying, would it be possible to remove emoticons completely? I wonder what would happen if somebody just removed those pics. I will try when I get my nexus back from service.

That should do. Or in worst case you can replace all smileys with transparent .PNG's
I want something that will entirely replace default contacts/phone/sms and mms on my phone. I saw this app called appropriately, Contacts by Contapps. https://play.google.com/store/apps/...51bGwsMSwxLDEsImNvbS5jb250YXBwcy5hbmRyb2lkIl0.
It looks ok. Tried a few others and there seemed to be odd integration problems.

I'm using contacts by conapps its actually really nice. It has everything in one. Handcent I found would not stick and got annoying. Tried GO too before and same thing would not stick and then found it really clunky but thanks so far for the suggestions!

Another vote for EX Dialer, very clean interface.
I am running now with EX Dialer and GO SMS Pro and both are pretty seamless and work well. Thanks for the input!
I am using Rocketdial it has all the options needed.

Why would anyone need a dialer or sms app on ICS? What functions are you missing?
Except maybe iPhone style messaging which I think is fanboyish.
One feature i'm missing with stock is T9 dialling (press number and get list of contacts which have those letters in it). Sms app...I havent really tried the stock one since i've been using Handcent earlier and GO Sms Pro on my previous handsets.
Youlu Address Book is perfect for me.

don't think you gonna get the "Samsung" one to install. sounds like maybe you on an aosp rom? "Samsung" app = touchwiz app. you need a touchwiz based rom. I suggest trying out gosms. its an amazing messaging app IMHO.
Or handcent. That is the one I have been using and I think it is perfect for me.

Question for those with gosms. Can it show text and the thread similar to the touchwiz messaging app in landscape? Really love that feature and it's something that Hand cent (which I've always been a fan of) lacks.
Thanks

Edit: Just downloaded GoSMS and found it does not have the landscape functionality of the Touchwiz messaging app. Kind of surprised neither GoSms nor Handcent have done these with 4.6"+ screen sizes becoming the norm and ample screen real-estate allowing for such functionality.

ooh ok, cool
Does anyone know a good SMS app that uses the holo design language? I've been using SMS Pro be am getting to the point that I dislike using apps that don't use the new (can it still be called "new") holo language. In some ways it shouldn't even matter because the Nexus devices can be flexible with their menu button. But I still dislike developers that make Android look old and dated
So I'm at the point where I've gone back to stock messenger but want (for example) a dark theme.
Does anyone have any ideas of a holo themed SMS app. (Holo themes for Go SMS Pro and Handcent don't count as the menu button is still in the wrong place.)
Here's a holo-themed stock messenger:
