I prefer to use Handcent instead of the default sms software. I tryed the following to replace the default sms icon in touchwiz, but unfortunately the Handcent icon appears only for a few seconds after boot then disappears... any ideas why?!
Opened in SQLite Editor App
/data/data/com.sec.android.app.twlauncher/databases/launcher.db
opened table menu_item
modified row with page_number=-1 and cell_number=2
putting in component_name:
com.handcent.nextsms/com.handcent.sms.ui.ConversationExList
overwriting the default value:
com.android.mms/com.android.mms.ui.ConversationComposer
LOL Open the app drawer and select the main menu and then edit. You can drag whatever shortcut you like over any of the default applications in the lower three (plus app drawer) icons that are stationary and the old shortcut and icon are then replaced with the new shortcut of your choice.
Ops... feeling dumb now too many hours tweaking and I can't see the easy things! I nead a break Thanks
No worries, you can screw around with these things quite a bit and still miss some things.
Personal taste, but ditch Handcent for Go SMS Pro.

Since I bought my Touch, I have been using the Threaded SMS app for text messaging and I love the app but as great as the app is, it doesn't work that well with the UI of the Touch. The onscreen keyboard covers up the input panel and because the texts are linear with the newest texts at the bottom, you can't see new texts with the keyboard open either.
This is what I propose:
I think it would be awesome to see a new version of the Threaded SMS application that is reversed. A version that has the input panel at the top with linear text messages showing the newest messages at the top instead of bottom. This would solve a lot of typos and you would actually be able to see what you are typing while still keeping that threaded SMS look and making having a conversation through text messaging that much easier. Also I think the registry in this app needs to be cleaned up a bit or re-written. It has many bugs like not always showing the new message counter on the home plugin or showing the counter on the plugin but not on the taskbar. Also sometimes it does not alert you of a new message so I think that a few tweaks is all it would really need aside from being redone reversed.
The original version is attached below.
the answer doesnt lie in the cab...the code itself needs to be edited...
Well I already knew that but I attached the cab as a base for modification.
One of things I've always wanted to do to Manila is remove the SMS and Email tabs in favor of having them appear on the Home tab.
When I get a new SMS, I miss being able to see a little "1" pop up on my messaging icon, and being to click it to jump right into pocket outlook and start my threaded conversation. (Right now, I have to slide over to the tab, read it in an admittedly eye candy scrolling fashion, often flicking back a couple of messages to remember what I was talking about, then click to open up HTC's messaging application. Its more clicks and swipes than I think necessary.)
I like that 2.5 lets you place shortcuts on the bottom of the home panel (finally), so I was considering making those shortcuts to SMS and Email and removing the tabs, but then I realized I'd be losing the notifications.
I'm still looking up and reading about Manila customization, and I think this should be possible... can anyone with some knowledge on the subject point me in the right direction?
Do I need to edit the home mode9 file?
Do I need to learn LUA?
Do I need both?
Can't seem to find any info on this that is relevant, just some stuff for much older versions and for WP.
I switched out my stock email app with the XFinity app, as it seems to be more reliable on retrieving email. The only problem I have with it is the icon is too big (touches the top and bottom of the launch bar) and the text is too long/doesn't wrap.
I was able to change the icon to a more standard icon via winrar etc, however I can't find a successful way to fix the text issue. Is this even possible?
Attached a pic, app is in lower right:
Well since you have it in the launcher I think the only way to do this would be to edit an .xml file (no idea which one) inside the .apk. You could always put it on the home screen using Launcher Pro, LP lets you customize the name. Probably not what you want to do, but just throwing it out there
Yeah I'm addicted to GTG though
I found several references to changes to strings.xml to allow wrapping etc and possibly change it entirely (not a lot of info there), but it appears to maybe be for an older version or something as the file isn't located in the apk where everyone says it should be.
Thanks though
Mates,
KE2 with OC KDD kernel; TW4.
How do I change the default apps by pressing Contacts or SMS?
I want to use 3rd party Contacts and SMS app; but still want to use TW4...
Open applications menu. Click menu button and choose edit. For message program change: Drag message icon out into the application area. The drag gosms onto the apps/icons bar. Hope this is clear.

Click to collapse
Ahhh; sorry mate; didnt explain clear enough. Got a customized theme; and because of this the icons are according to the theme; but if I change the SMS icon with the Go SMS; then I loose the customized icons.....
But thanx for the tip though :=)
Ahh OK. So to keep the icons the same change the shortcut link different I suppose another option, rather than change the shortcut link, would be to change the icon/shortcut and then change its icon to the your theme.
I have no idea which is easier and how to do it unfortunately so just putting it out there in case it helps. I guess for both these things you may need to root your phone and get a more powerful file browser.
I tried searching the forums to see if my question was already answered on this, but I couldn't find any that directly answered me, so here goes:
How does one go about changing what shorctus are in the bottom bar; where there are the 4 seemingly permanent shorcuts (Phone, Contacts, Messaging and Applications)? (or is this at all possible?)
Specifically, I'd love to be able to change the "Messaging" shortcut to be Handcent, my texting app of choice.
Thanks in advance!
Open Applications.
Hit Menu Key (bottom left).
Select Edit.
Drag stuff on and off of the launcher bar at the bottom.
Or get alot more fun options by installing a different launcher, I love GoLauncher.
That did it. Thanks so much for the reply! +Thanks for you!
