is there any way for me to get my stock 2.2 epic 4g to force roam without rooting the phone?
I don't believe so. In fact this issue is what helped nudge me to learn to root in the first place. Do it, you won't regret it. It gives you so much more control over your phone.

You should be able to change to a verizon prl without rooting. There's a thread in dev section on how to update it manually. Check it out might be what you need.

Only problem is, will they get pinched for doing that by Sprint eventually since it's going to be on Verizon more or less always. And, it'd prevent them from getting proper data service. Unless there's a way to switch PRLs on the fly I'm not aware of.

No way to switch on fly and I've been using a 0001 prl for over a month now. And used roam control constantly for about two months before that and never had any issues with sprint.

I read somewhere that we get 800mbs a month on roaming before you get flagged, then i think they offer you an airrave cell tower, after that i think they terminate ur contract (free of ETF *wink* *wink*)
EDIT: which is why Roam Control rocks, solid 1x is better than nothing
Correct and people have been terminated for that reason. Just root and get roam control from the market. Its simple too root. And roam control works great. I find myself in areas with 1 or no bars of service and goes up too 4 or 5 when roam control is on

Should I be expecting an Airrave then, I stream hbogo and am on xda and other games all the time on a different prl? Can't beat getting free stuff. Only thing is it won't help me out at work

When I was looking at some roms for my epic I saw that someone had switched their prefered network to other rather than sprint. I was wondering if anyone knew how to switch the network. A method that does not require rooting would be prefered but not required. Thanks in advance.

Buy Roam Control from the market, you need to be rooted, but this will easily do the job

Roam Control is well worth the money.
Its worth noting though that roaming data speeds are 1x, not 3G. But this is super handy if you just need voice coverage.
Cool. Will try it next week. Suppose to be relesing 2.2 update (finally). Thank you for your help, you guys are the best.

Roam control in the market. It is a paid app.
Only problem is you will be stuck using 1xrtt.
Any free apps? or manual way to do it?

The only way is to root and use Roam Control.
Or you could call sprint customer service, tell them your problem, and ask for an Airave, which will give you signal in your house. They should give it to you for free if you convince then and ask nicely.
you could hack the verizon network with one of their prl's, theres a thread in dev for doing that
would work fantastic if its verizon that your roaming on at home

4G is WiMax, which is a completely separate radio. What you're asking is like saying, "Is there a way to enable Bluetooth roaming". Clearwire is the only WiMax provider anyways, so even if there was a way, there's no where else to run to.
there isnt anything else to roam off of....
short answer, not doable in any way shape form or fashion
thanks.. wasnt aware of the technology but that makes sense.. looks like ill be using slow 3g speeds lol, i can finally put my unltd data to use.. whats a good prl to use for 3g roaming since my house is a complete DEAD zone for sprint service lol.. i need to be able to download new roms or im screwed.. luckily i downloaded the cm9alpha3 this morning and right now on nocturnal venum v1.0 lol.. and i can now test my tethering

If you roam onto Verizon too much, Sprint will terminate your contract. Just a head's up.

they will only boot you if you are consistently using over 300MB a month in data while roaming or if 80% of your minutes are used while roaming (if you use a lot of minutes).
i use roam control everyday and have no issues and never have

Correction:
For data there's no set limit but around what you stated is a reasonable assumption. The 300 MB limit is for laptop cards and data-only plans. As for minutes, if more than half are used roaming, for 3 months in a row, you get a warning letter. Then you get the boot. I'm a former sprint employee who also received the warning letter lol

Also, what is the point of buying a service that doesn't provide coverage where you live?

It is clearly statrd in the TOS that 300mb/month is the limit for roaming.

That's for 3g cards/data only plans, on a phone plan its done by percentages and not a hard limit its 80%of total mins/month or 50%total data/month

First of all, you have to have a legal copy of Roam Control, pirated copies do not work properly.
A custom PRL used in conjunction with Roam Control will allow you to force roam on another provider like Verizon. If you do not flash a custom prl to the phone, you will still be roaming on Sprint at 1x speeds. Using the custom PRL for roaming will give you up to 3G data speed and usually a better signal. It is best used where your Sprint signal is very low (after all, why force roam if you don't have to).
The PRL thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1521343
Just download a prl zip of your choosing and install roam control from the play store? No other steps?

LOL, TT you threw me for a loop there so I had to go look. It's not available in the Play Store, you still have to purchase it from the website I believe:
http://www.roamctrl.com/
The PRL thing isn't that simple. Check out the PRL thread I posted for programming info. It's not something you 'flash' exactly.
Also, PRL programming won't work on some ROMs (I think CM9 is one of them) so you'll have to search that thread if the programming steps don't work for you.

I'm interested in being able to roam on Verizon, since Sprint is a POS at my school and home, and I'm constantly loosing messages, and data speeds are very sad. Anyways, I did a quick search and found a guide on changing the PRL to Sprint's "Corporate PRL" which apparently grants roaming with 3G data on Sprint, but it seems as if though that guide is old (Sept 19 from last year) and I'm not sure it'll work on my ROM (AOKP JB) So, does that guide still work? Is it safe? If no, what are my other options?
Also, how much minutes/texts/data usage would piss off Sprint? I've been meaning to switch for a while now...

I don't want to get too deep into this since there is a PRL thread in the forums, but doesn't that one force you to roam all the time? Sprint has a roaming limit of something like 200MB a month; if you go over that they can and frequently will cancel the rest of your contact. Some people do that on purpose, which I don't recommend or advise. If you just want to use your phone when you don't have much of a signal, use a PRL like 11115 along with the app Roam Control, that way you control when the phone roams.
yes.. oooo2 or w.e is a verizon prl roaming 100%.. i used the sprint corp prl i think 11124 or something which wasnt roaming while set to home only. but would have verizon 3g while in roam only with roam control which is compatible with jb now... however if using verizon eventually u will get a call from sprints roaming team.. and the prl thread is right. just need to be on a tw rom and when u go back to a aosp rom prl will stay until u update it
