Trying to brick?? - G2 and Desire Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I have an extra phone laying around and I tried to brick it by removing battery during the flash of a radio...well I'm using the phone I did that with and no brick. Tried it 10 times at different parts of flash and no brick..what gives?
Sent from my T-Mobile G2 using XDA Premium App

Just wondering...Why are you trying to brick your phone? Keep it around you never know what may happen to your other phone.

Or sell it or give it to someone who can use it for rom development

Because I can lol. No effin tmobile wants to replace my phone for one that "will give me better data speeds" like I told them its not going to change a thing but they sent one anyways. Now I have to send the other one to them. Tried to unroot, but the hex editor wasn't giving me the info the guide was telling. So I tried to brick and no luck. Tried to flash radio from another phone..desire and nada..just got something about the pc10img parsing.
Answer anyone?

Try flashing Haykuro's bootloader from the G1. Give a new meaning to the term "DeathSPL."

Got a link by chance?

Check the Cyanogenmod Wiki. There's a link under "Rooting the HTC Dream."

On mobile at work. Xda is blocked and if I use a proxy ill get fired. Searched phrase but found nothing on mobile app. If its a big deal don't worry about it I will search tomorrow, but if you can bust one out real quick I wouldn't be mad at ya for it

Download the visionary app and click perm root. That should work.

If You got root.
You use it in terminal on your phone*
$ su
# dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18*
# sync
# reboot*
#dead.

I dd'ed radio image to blk0p18, instead of hboot, mixed my files and phone was dead, waiting for an update to riffbox, then I will revive my dear phone again
Rise from the dead I say !
Now I wonder what I can do with the Volum UP + Power button combination.
The phone beeps 3 times, and the orange led is blinking until I pull the battery.
The device shows as Qualcomm CDMA Technologies MSM btw.

This is too funny, lol.

what happens if you flash a completely different HBOOT on the phone
or create a text file with: now your dead. call it deadphone.img
Code:
dd if=/data/local/deadphone.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p18
!!!!!!THERE IS NO RECOVERY FROM THIS SO DO NOT TRY THIS UNLESS YOU WANT A BRICKED PHONE!!!!!
1.
Code:
adb boot bootloader
2 use fastboot do completely erase the emmc
Code:
fastboot oem fdisk_emmc
now it's dead

Yea it's dead. I was putting that asterisk in on the end and didn't read the screen the first time when it said failed. Just stupid newb moment.

You need to get a replacement brother. So it was your actual camera. Sprint will probably give you one at no cost if you have insurance. Hmmmm

I'm willing to bet you $100 bucks if you walk in a corporate store and let the tech look at it you'll walk out the store with another device at no cost. Just don't tell them you EVER rooted or tampered with the device in anyway. I would would say "the camera just all of a sudden went out when taking a picture". Sprint reps are usually idiots (no offense to xda sprint reps) but these techs will bite on anything you tell them.

Even if you don't have insurance you get a one year warranty anyways, I'd just walk in there anyways and make them swap it out. Just handle the situation good man, I've had about 2 evos lol (not my fault). Just go in there and at least act like you know what you're talking about; conversation rules the nation!

Did you unroot and flash a stock rom or did you merely unroot keeping a custom rom & kernel in check? If it is the latter, I would have suggested that you flash a different kernel. The ONLY time I had problems with the camera was with kernels that my device didn't play well with. If it is the former, then take your device to the Sprint store and attempt to get a replacement device.

I was under the impression that when you unrooted you ran the ruu lol. If you haven't ran the official htc 3.70 ruu you should do that man. You will need to already have htc sync on your computer. If you do this and still have cameras problems I'd get a replacement.
Here's the link to the official ruu, it will bring your phones completely back to stock.
http://goo-inside.me/supersonic/sto...15.00.11.19_NV_1.90_release_161482_signed.exe
But how ima do that if I'm unrooted already? I unrooted my phone using the Unrevoked method
Sent from my PC36100 using XDA App
The unrevoked just put you S-ON, it didnt unroot you. You need to run a RUU, either via your PC or through the bootloader, the bootloader would be easiest for you. Search for unroot thread, should be able to find the ZIP right away.

I'd run the ruu anyways just for peace of mind. It can't hurt anything at all its just a windows exe program you run to update your rom to factory image.
Just rename this file to PC36IMG.zip and flash in hboot like cordell said.

Can you post the link of the method you used, if I'm not mistaken as cordell stated above I will only put s-on. You still need to ruu. What rom are you on? Can you go into settings and check what kernel you have?
In the Unrevoked method I have another file named PC36IMG.zip so what I'm gonna do, download that one anyways?

Oh yeah lol. Well Delete that one you already have, then you will have to download the one I posted, rename it, then put on root of sdcard and flash in hboot? Before you do all that do you mind telling me what kernel you have? Don't list all the letters just tell me what # and what's at the end.

There are already multiple thread for this, but yeah you'll NEED a PC.
I thought it'd be a really cool idea to do all this without one, but realistically you'd run into some huge trouble if your device was bricked in the process of an app sending files to your /root

reading getprop ril.MSL and 32GB GS3 vs 16GB

Hello,
I have a blue 32GB GS3 Sprint. Was fumbling around trying to use various techniques for obtaining MSL via software, and failing. Question I have are:
Has anyone else have a 32GB GS3 and had success reading MSL?
Does the various methods out there only work on the 16GB version? Does anyone know?
Report your findings here. Im curious to know what specifics.

You know that | is a pipe (ie: the Shift + \ key) not an I, or L.
Though if you're not on a linux system, you may have to first type adb shell
then type : cat /proc/kmsg | grep 'mmc0:0001'
to use the grep command within the recovery OS.
adb shell
cat /proc/kmsg | grep 'mmc0:0001'
do it as two seperate commands

lol, yea that's the good batch, the bad batch is that MDE* one. It just means you may have another year or two for your phone as the bad batch seemed to have started dying bout a year and a half ago. (I imagine non-rooted phones will survive longer due to not as many write operations to the recovery/system partitions, but you'd probably wana chuck a phone with only gingerbread on it a year from now).

I do not think I did it with wrong files. I made a tar from the img file I got from clockworkmod.com so I am sure it was clean. I am wondering if perhaps it screwed up because I had changed build.prop to say the device was "Galaxy Nexus" for Wallet to work properly. And maybe that mod I made confused it and somehow flashed something for a Nexus instead and that is why it wont function. If I had it to do again, I would have changed the build.prop back for few moments while I changed the recovery image. All of this was simply to update CWM to newest 6.0.2.8 since ROM Manager told me there was new one. I wish I had ignored it and just said no. Is there no way to hard reset this thing somehow with ODIN or a key combination that say a Samsung employee tool may "flash factory" to it? Seems odd I cannot fix this on my own. No tool nothing?
I've heard the wallet needs to be reset and all that before anything new is flashed.
I haven't flashed anything since the wallet, so I haven't looked into it yet.

Look for JTAG repair. If you can't even get it to turn on, that's what needs to be done.
It's not a home job - to tools cost several times more than the service and require more specialised knowledge.
If you can get it to turn on, look into making or buying a micro-usb jig - cheap and might work if you have time to mess around.

I am certain that is the reason I have hard brick. If I had changed build.prop....changed the recovery with mobile odin....then gone and changed it back afterwards...I am sure it would not have broken the phone. At any rate, I just will have to await warranty replacement since I get mixed readings about this MTV solution that costs almost 100 bucks.
No need to change it back. Once wallet is set up and your card activated, you can set your build.prop back to t999 and Wallet will still work perfectly, it only needs to say Nexus for the install/activation.

Again, if you simply change your build.prop back to the correct values for the T999 afyer you activate Google Wallet, the entire issue would be avoided and Mobile Odin should be safe to use. I know its too late for that for the OP, but hopefully someone somewhere can learn from this.
